- A basic picking pattern for 5 string banjo when playing Irish songs. This can be used in songs in 4 time , example dirty old town, night visiting song , school days over and millions more
Thank you for taking the time to prepare and share such a helpful video. I've been messing around with 5-string (open-G) and 4-string tenor (GDAe) banjos now for a few months, and I'm quite fond of music by the Pogues, so this has been a very helpful introduction to a roll pattern that is quite useful for a beginner with such interests. So thanks again, and best wishes to you.
Great. Thanks for that. I'm starting out playing the banjo and finding it hard to find basic Irish songs to learn. This should help build the confidence :)
Ah brilliant mate, thanks a million!
Sounds good. Good lesson. 👍
👍
Outstanding thank you, just subbed
Brilliant 👏
thank you man. ☘️❤️😊👏👏👍
Thank you sir
you got tab for this one fella?
Great lesson but tell me are you playing chords on your left hand or it is all open string? Thanks in advance.
Start is just open, after about 45 seconds think there's chords
great - is there a little tab for this ?? thanks
Sorry banjoman but I don't have tabs, but it's basically just the same pattern over and over
What are the actual strings you're hitting.Hard to see it as you play
Great video! What banjo is that there?
Thanks Greencheezy, It's a Zach hoyt banjo
@@Bainseo5 where would you get a banjo like that? or similar? how much would you expect to pay?
@@keithmasterson2117 it's from here hoytbanjos.com/ so you can see the kind of price range. If your in uk or ireland I like www.andybanjo.com for excellent banjos for the price , also in Ireland I have found some good deals on adverts or done deal but have to be patient
@@Bainseo5 I have a Cherry Zach Hoyt banjo! When I first saw your banjo I thought it looked familiar. When I heard it played, I knew. Love the sound of his banjos! Thanks for the lesson!
can you tell me what string you pluck in the roll
Thumb plucks low d and high g. Mostly the d but I think I explain it in the video. Index on the g and middle and ring on b and high d at the same time
@@Bainseo5 thanks but for me its better to know the number of the string, i make it 4 3 2+1 3 then the same but with 5 is that right
@@talbotracer seems about right yeah
What kind of tuning do you use?
Just standard, g d g b d
@@Bainseo5 I guess the same picking pattern with work on a GDAE tuning, just different chord shapes. (For any fellow novices reading this, if you have a GDAE "Irish" tuned banjo then manolin tabs, chord sheets etc seem to work well as the same tuning).
What are the chords you're using. Pity you didn't show the whole banjo
(G)I must (c)away (g)now,I can no (d)longer (g)tarry,
(G)This morning's (c)tem(g)pest,I have to(d)cross,
I must be (g)guided,without a (c)stum(g)ble,
Into the (c)arrr(g)arms I (d)love the(g) most
Is this an open back banjo?
Yep
Irish banjo? Someone tell me more about this!
That's a long neck banjo
Ok, so there's a five string banjo so his one, or there is a 4 string tenor banjo mkr of an 'Irish' banjo its used in Irish music you see? So I would recommend tenor for Irish and five string for country, bluegrass and a few shanties.
@@LarboardAnimations9660 thanks!
