The one thing that I love about black sabbath is that they never stuck in their comfort zone, they were always experimenting and trying to evolve, they were definitely ahead of their time with the music they made and still to this day no other band sounds like them

I've said it before elsewhere, but this song is part of the greatest 27 minutes of continuous music ever recorded (Hole in the Sky thru Thrill of it All). Absolutely unbelievable and unbeatable.

Supertzar is amazing. Sabotage is a mind-movie, and the piece really puts the idea of an epic battle in your mind, between God and Satan...as it fades you realize a battle that never really ends.
Am I Going Insane (Radio) - Gets a bad rap. Catchy hook and bouncy bassline that gives a healthy dose of contrast and uplifts the mood a bit before hitting hard with The Writ. Try to imagine the 70's when albums were often listened to in their entirety, and then imagine how much harder The Writ hits when you get that fade and the crying and that rolling bass...and then BAM! Darkness and Rage.
AIGI(R)? Is a great portion of the overall work of masterful art that is Sabotage.
      IMO

All Sabotage tracks are excellent. On Sabbath's 8 albums from the 70's, there are only wonderful songs. I hope Andrew reacts to Snowblind, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the other Sabotage songs. The genius, creativity, excellence, avant-garde of Sabbath: something from aliens, from very advanced spirits.

Megalomania and The Writ were a direct swipe at their manager. They were about to go on stage when they were handed a writ, they were being sued by the US government over almost a million dollars in back taxes which their manager had not paid. megalomania was already written and they changed some of the lyrics to express their dissatisfaction. The Writ was a direct swipe, among the lyrics is "Who the hell do you think we are, Another joker who's a rock and roll star, for you. Just for you." I have read Tony's autobiography "Iron Man", and he spends some time on this episode describing how the band almost went bankrupt. Hence the title Sabotage

@@AndrewRooneyDrums The Writ is a great song done in typical Sabbath fashion, many tempo and mood changes which translates to about 4 songs in 1. Some commentors have likened it to Queens Bohemian Rapsody in so far as it can sound like a mini rock opera. The song starts off with a mellow Geezer bass line then hits you in the guts with its anger. It is well worth one of your reaction videos, which are great by the way. Thank you.

We all love the meme about how the greatest compliment a drummer can get is when someone makes stank face at their playing. Don't think it was lost on me - a singer - that you gave Ozzy's vocals some stank face. This album was probably the peak of his vocal abilities, the true emergence of Ozzy from being a singer in a great band to being a star. I've seen it said that this (or rather the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath tour before this album) was when he discovered the POWER in his voice, and it's a straight line from here to his solo career and unquestioned position as the Prince of Darkness upon the throne of heavy metal.
Sabotage is generally considered to be the last of the classic Black Sabbath records, with Technical Ecstasy & Never Say Die being fraught with all the problems that lead to their demise. There's still good music on those albums, to be sure, but they just don't feel alive and vital as albums.

I grew up listening to Black Sabbath and spent hours and hours banging away at the drums to all these songs. The memories come back strong of my teens getting lost in these songs. I was either playing drums or hanging out in the woods at night blast these songs.
Black Sabbath were story tellers, each change was like a next chapter in a book.
Strangely I went from Black Sabbath, Cream, The Jimmy Hendrix experience and The Doors to listening to free Jazz and Elvin Jones with John Coltrane.

The drama was all about their former management, who’d been ripping them off for years, & they were in a law suit all through recording this album.
The Writ is a rare one that Ozzy wrote the lyrics for, named for the wits that were turning up almost every day in the studio; it’s a very angry denouncement of their former manager.
Coincidentally, this was the same time that Queen was recording “Death on Two Legs”, which was Freddie Mercury writing about Queen’s former manger for exactly the same sort of reasons

I first heard Sabbath in 1970 when Paranoid was a single. I saw them for the first time in 1973, when I was 15. When Sabotage came out, I bought it but didn't listen to it much, as I had a lot of other things going on. A few years later, after listening to it a lot, it became my favourite Sabbath album. I grew up in the '70s, and Black Sabbath has always been one of my favorite bands, and as far as I'm concerned, it doesn't get any better than Ozzy-era Black Sabbath.
Listening to this through kind of fresh ears while watching your channel, this is way, way more mature than their older stuff. I don't think it's better, just more mature. The first three albums will always be my favorites, but this is a great album too, and I was lucky enough to see them on this tour (with Peter Frampton and Brownsville Station opening for them!).
Another thing that strikes me while listening to this stuff with kind of fresh ears, you mentioned how they always switch to almost a completely different song. I don't think I ever gave that much thought when this stuff was new. It's just how it was. But relistening to it through reactions, it's crazy how often they did that!

Excellent job, Andrew! Excellent pick, Matt (you saved me a pick, since this was at the top of my request list to ask for)! This is off of the same album as Symptom of the Universe, and is Sabbath's 6th great album in 5 years; a 5 year period unmatched by any band ever, and it's not even close. Tony Iommi, creative genius. They never got any radio play and still have been discovered to be the greatest band ever through word of mouth completely. Bill Ward is actually wearing his wife's tights, haha! The Writ is an angry song about their manager ripping them off and them being embroiled in lawsuits; and this masterpiece is about struggles with mental health ("I'm really digging schizophrenia"), which is sort of the implied idea behind the cover art of the personalities fighting for control, one hidden behind the other, and their being two voices in some of the singing by Ozzy. At the end of the song he finally proclaims himself to be "Free!" of the other personality and the mental illness.

Sabbath's use of dynamics in this song might be their best. It feels like an evocation or an evolution of the song Black Sabbath: Same kind of soft, sinister, slow, low key instrumentation, Ozzy's wails, then an absolutely incredible adrenaline rush finale, created with everything they've learned about writing, arranging and production since then, and the devil they're facing now is the devil they made their deals with in the music industry. To me, a great milestone of the massive expansion of their raw talent.

Well done!! Sabotage is In my top 3 albums of all time! Words fail me everything I listen. To this song. So happy to be alive to experience side 1 in its entirety....then on Side 2, 'Thrill of it all' hits you!! Bloody Hell. The Riff with the intro solo over it! Then after the manic laughter subsides from am I going Radio (Rental)..English slang for 'going mental' Geezer's bass introduces us to 'The Writ'. No words whatsoever. You can't describe it. We try though....'I spliced tape of a recording of The Writ so that the middle section repeated again on an old mix tape from the early 80's. Still have it. That riff almost makes one want to snuff it on the spot, to preserve THAT feeling forever. My goodness, Andrew Rooney may need counselling for how the heck he ever missed Sabbath for so long after he hears The Writ. Cheers for the priceless reaction to Meglomania. What a song. As I have said in your comments before, Bill Ward inspired me to pick up the drumsticks in the 80's. Just jammed some sabbath today! Cheers Bill!

What's funny about Bill's solo album is that the actual drumming isn't particularly interesting. "Bombers" for example is pretty much "Boom, tap" all the way through. Maybe on purpose? I seem to remember the video he's just got a bass and a snare and maybe a crash. It might've been a choice, I suppose. It's been a long time.

When I’m in a funky mood I CRANK this in the car and let it clean my mental palette with its sheer attitude. If I get too much modern pop at an eatery, this is played afterwards in my car to undo the mundaneness of sequenced push button looped music. It ROCKS.
