No, when a band sounds the same live, it can be kind of boring. If I wanted to listen to the album...i'd listen to the album. What's beautiful is when they can do something completely different with a song we know and love. And come on, the dude has obviously got a cold, and is performing a pretty difficult/varied song on JUST an acoustic guitar. Not that i'm making excuses for him, I still enjoyed it.

Well Sam Smith, I think, and this is purely just my opinion, that Kevin Barnes isn't really one to go with the grain and make his guitar harmonize with his voice. (I think you mean using his voice to harmonize with the guitar, I'm not really sure.) But if not, I'm not sure what you mean by listenable, I do know that the audio here isn't the greatest but other than that I'm not really sure what makes his guitar playing not listenable. I personally never like to compare musicians, I think each musician has a style, and sometimes these styles are inspired by other musicians and sometimes they're entirely unique. Is there only one way to play a guitar and sing? No, I don't think so at least. Does Neil Young sound better than Kevin Barnes, yeah, I think many people could agree that Neil Young naturally sounds better. But I also believe that's purely just opinion. There is no one right way to play guitar and sing, I've listened to enough obscure and underground artists to realize that guitar playing can be beautiful with singing in many different ways. I'd even go far enough to say that this isn't even Kevin's best guitar playing/singing song so it really shouldn't be held to a standard of comparison. And I don't think Kevin is really trying to do anything spectacular, his music is just his artistic expression and therefore isn't trying to be anything amazing or record breaking, it's just his music.
@@procerus4789 listening to him here (i've always really loved this video), kevin is most definitely a master of acoustic rhythm guitar. neil young definitely had questionable songwriting with some stuff, but was a solid singer/rhythm/lead guitar player...kevin is not much of a lead player of montreal makes me miss the mid 2000's...as cliche as it sounds, life was so much simpler back then.
yay!!! i love of montreal and mr. barnes. also wacky fashion doesnt make people gay it makes them weird. my friend gets that alot when we go out to regular bars (no hes not gay, neither am i). and when we go to gay bars its mainly GQ looking dudes or "normal looking" guys. but gay bars are a great place to get free drinks and feel pretty. =) alot of gay guys dont care if your not gay, they are still gonna try. its cute.

John Mayer comes to mind...
A band should sound AS GOOD live as they do on the record, not sound the same. A band can perform well live AND sound different.. Cold or no cold. Sorry!
