Could you guys upload an entire video, no less then 10 minutes, of Mark doing his famous impressions? I would like Herzog, Fred, Nicholas Cage, Woody Allen, and an Abba sing-along. Thanks in advance.
I read the book after seeing the movie so I didn't have a problem with his size. The story was interesting enough but the character's personality is the draw and Tom plays it well in my opinion.
Agreed.
I'm surprised by Mark's reaction, I loved this film. It had great action, funny diologue and had a sense of its own rediculousness. Occasionally I wasn't sure if I was laughing at or with the film, but I still thought it was great fun.
I thought Cruise did a great job. He has done some stupid things in his life, but he is a solid actor that rarely disappoints.Having said that,I liked the movie. The murder mystery aspect had me the whole time, but the underlying plot seemed to be the weaker point. It's like the writer wanted to write about a conspiracy for the people to get killed, which would have been fine, except there's so little development of that part of the plot. Also, the shootout at the end seemed very out of place.
It reminds me of what happened with another Cruise movie - The Firm. There's an insurance conspiracy that is introduced and subsequently dropped.
Sad to hear the trend continues (in the UK) that 15 certificate films are being watered down by the studios to gain 12A ratings. Means they get bigger audiences, but this film sounded like it lacked bite.
Quite a lot of Bavarians will tell you that they feel Bavarian first, and German second. German unification (as opposed to re-unification) didn't happen all that long ago, and Bavaria still officially calls itself "Freistat Bayern" (Bavarian Free State).
It's not called the German Texas for nothing! Lots of Germans -- whether Bavarian or "actual" -- seem to enjoy jokingly/half-jokingly/ha-ha-only-seriously suggesting it's not really part of Germany.
In terms of German unification, I think they implicitly seem to think they might as well have ended up as part of Austria... but no doubt if they had, they'd consider themselves distinctive from it, too!
I actually completely forgot i'd seen this film and was halfway through the opening scene when i realised i'd seen this somewhere before. So i guess Mark's right - for me it was so ordinary i forgot i'd even seen it. It's not bad. Just not memorable.
First thing to say is I like the film, AND I have read 4 or 5 of the books. However, if this had been made in the 1970s or 80s, Clint Eastwood would have taken the role and done it better. In his prime he was nearly 6' 4" and over 200lbs, which is much closer to the size of Reacher in the novels. My feeling is that Lee Child based the Reacher character on Clint Eastwood. I can hear Clint Eastwoods laconic delivery when I read the books..... Somebody should ask the author!
Vince Vaughan would make a much better Jack Reacher. He's the right height and build and if you watch Brawl in Cell Block 99 you will see he could act the part too.
Just seen it, very good - doesn't overdo it so you enjoy the action much more. The story isn't too predictable and it doesn't give u the cliché romance that most movies would do..
"Ordinary" is exactly what me and my partner thought when we saw the trailer. We both looked at each other with a look that said: "oh look, it's generic Tom Cruise vehicle number X"... we'll be giving this one a miss, I think. I want to see him do more villainous roles.
He’s supposed to be 6’5” 250 lbs of solid muscle.
The marketing people should advertise Werner Herzog a lot more.
Really enjoyed Jack Reacher. Cruise was fine but I mainly liked it because it was well made and had an interesting story.
I'm actually relieved to hear Mark disliked this, all the ads make it look obnoxiously awful.
Check Mark's review of the sequel. He's changed his mind and likes the movie.
Description is wrong. He is not a homicide detective. Did u even watch the film?
I liked the clever and original use of words.
This review is pretty spot on. Herzog and Duvalle are good. But it feels abit lazy indeed. There are some very coincidental coincidents that are just too coincidental ;) Herzog was underused. The red Hering is apparent from the beginning, and when they double down on the red hering later in the movie, you know exactly who it really is. The reveal/twist doesn’t have the effect they hoped for. And it’s a bit too much of a tom cruise show. Worth a rent though!
You don't know what your talking about! Tom Cruise is awesome as Reacher! This movie is a nice surprise! Smart funny, it's an action thriller, just a interduction to who Jack Reacher is, this could easily be a franchise, that just gets bigger as it goes! Go see it, it's a must see, really good! Loved Cruise! Wanted much more Cruise as Reacher!
Very enjoyable film.
I like this movie quite a bit
His impression sounds like Lars Von Trier.
3:50 - Nah, i couldn't make it through 'Taken 2' (although i liked 'Taken'), but enjoyed 'Jack Reacher' as a film - not read the books though, so i appreciate the disappointment felt from the juxtaposition between the two genres.. :/
What he's saying is Tom Cruise is too much of a pretty boy to play a rugged loner.
Hopefully, they remake JR with Chris Hemsworth. That'd be awesome...
9:12 - Shomer Shabbos.
I think its a light that is red when on air and green when off air
The film’s intriguing, stylish, thrilling & is well directed, however the film’s acting, cast, writing & pacing is poor. (62%) (3/5 stars) (mixed)
Cruise had the personality, just not the stature
I love this movie it was one of my favorite films of last year!!!
Lead character in the book is a 6 ft 5 inch blonde, so who do we get in the film? Tiny Tom.
feeling a little underwhelmed by another tom cruise flick
Not wrong ..
"Terribly ordinary and not very good"
These two guys can't get over the fact that Tom Cruise is playing this character. And if they can't do that, then it's obvious they won't like the movie.
It's a rare Cruise film where Cruise gets over the fact that Cruise is playing -- invariably! -- the lead either, to be fair. Which kinda encapsulates what they're talking about.
Primus
haha, "was there more"
I usually agree with Mark, but not this time. It's a great entertaining movie.
"homocide", eh?
I've not read the books, but saw the trailer for Jack Reacher when watching Skyfall at the cinema yesterday. It looks simply awful.
Mark "The Problem With This Film Is" Kermode.
Jack Reacher isn't exploitation cinema, Mark.
What a weird complaint.
Why are you not presenting "Film 2012!"? instead of that myopic, blinky, vacuous bird and her supplicant sidekick? COME-ON BBC!
Mark Kermode constantly interrupting himself... is there any film he actually likes?
i read somewhere he likes the exorcist.
its that a pink lit coffee cup ... wtf !!
The problem with this film is Tom Cruise. He's such a bland actor who doesn't suit the role.
Quite wrong of course. Jack reacher was a top film. Never going back not so much.
Jack Reacharound.. Boring. Move on..
