    China's ENDING HOLLYWOOD | World's Biggest Studio | 中国下一个好莱坞 | 世界最大的影业
Opened in 1996, Hengdian World Studios, which is known as China’s Hollywood, is the world’s largest film studio. It is located in Hengdian, a township about a 2½ hours’ drive south from Hangzhou, and about 4½ hours’ driving from Shanghai.
As Zhang Xianchun, the chief designer of the studio and designer of the Opium War props and Guangzhou Street, said: “For today’s Hengdian World Studios, film and television are just the instruments. Tourism is the goal and culture is its soul.”
Hengdian World Studios, or Hengdian Film and TV Production City, is the most famous film and TV production base in China. 160kilometers from Hangzhou and 90kilometers from Jinhua, the shooting base is located in the Hengdian Town which sits amidst the Zhejiang-Jiangsu-Shanghai-Fujian-Jiangxi economic circle, and it is easily accessible by plane, train and bus.
At present, the Hengdian World Studios is the largest film production site in Asia and has been dubbed the "Chinese Hollywood" by the American magazine "Hollywood".

Hi Alex. Very interesting video 👍
For those of your viewers who've never watched Chinese TV, I'd like to share with them 2 Chinese TV dramas I've been watching recently if that's OK.
( If not ok, please feel free to just delete my comment )
      (1) 'New Life Begins'( 卿卿日常 )
      ua-cam.com/video/-SuPBoFDNls/v-deo.html
Very visually refreshing and stimulating. Quite funny if you understand Chinese.
(Probably a good fun drama to start if you've never watched Chinese dramas)
      (2) 'Princess Silver' ( 白髮 )
      ua-cam.com/video/8HANp-tJXWw/v-deo.html
Excellent storyline with plots within plots. Every episode has a climax. Keeps you guessing.
(But not easy to understand if you don't speak the language)
Feel free to try them and see if you like them.

Thanks Alex for doing a video on Hengdian. I didn't know it was founded on the idea of promoting tourism and creating jobs for the locals. Now a day, Chinese's Wuxia and Xianxia dramas are amazing. They have greatly improved over the years. They have beautiful male and female leads, beautiful outfits, beautiful choreography of fighting, and beautiful settings. Many of their scenes are shot in Hengdian studio. So, I want to visit there someday.

Having grown up on western movies, I have really lost interest in Hollywood action and superhero movies of the past decade or so. I'm not too keen on Chinese slapstick comedy but I do like costume dramas and simple stories about everyday life (I quite enjoyed Grandson from America). There's some YT channels with Chinese movies.

Chinese dramas were always solid, even back in the ‘90s, there're a lot of masterpieces,
but Chinese film still has a long way to go imo, it still somewhat lacks the skill of good storytelling, I can only think of 1 or 2 good movies per year
on the other hand, yea, Hollywood definitely hit the peak at early 2000s, and declined ever since

Ever since its gone woke, I stopped watching Hollywood. I was a MCU hardcore fan, who followed every movie and even a couple of Netflix shows up until the Endgame and then the last couple of Spider movies, but it started to become so repetitive and the storytelling and character building quality so bad that I gave up on Hollywood altogether. I might try again in the future, as I heard they just made another Avatar movie that I'm curious about; and I'm also a bit curious about the new Black Panther, because the main actor died, so I'm wondering how they'll continue that story without him, but we'll see.

when I first saw the China-made movie "Hero" (2002), and later on, "Curse of the Golden Flower" (2006), I was absolutely stunned and awestruck by the massive life-sized ancient Chinese imperial palatial movie set that showed no hint of it being CGI at all, but real solid buildings!
I was wondering where in China was such a thing built, and that it was used for far more than just one epic movie, but many more!

Have to confess I'd never heard of 'Chinawood', so I'm learning something watching this. Certainly aware that China's film industry these days is one of the biggest. Over the years there have been terrific material emanating from Chinese directors such as Zhang Yimou (Red Sorghum, Hero, Raise the Red lantern, To live) all featuring the wonderful Gong Li, whom I had a crush on. Red firecracker, green firecracker was epic and tragic. Also fan of the Wong Kar-wai (Chungking express, in the mood for love, 2046). Although he's HK based was born in Shanghai and his movie Ashes of Time, truly a work of cinematic art, was filmed out Dunhuang way. China's film industry rocks.

baby steps..... wandering earth and chinese epics such as ALL the above mentioned period dramas not to mention war movies such as the 800 and lake changjin etc have shown to me that Chinese film industry can do those no problem... especially the costumes and costume dramas.....
its wandering earth that signalled that China can pull off a scifi movie to me..... the film and movie was ok.... but it was massive at the time about WETA works and VFX
Japan filmed one of their period epics here as well but cant remember the movie....
Not even baby steps lol in videogames Chinese studios are making a big noise all of a sudden!! wowing jaded western gamers with a new culture language and myths and legends......
the past 2 years sony have teased, showcased chinese and korean studios in absence of the usual japanese studios...... they are giving sonys and even big western pubs AAA games a run for their money.... most recently Black Myth Wukong is the spear head, a big bloody spearhead lol..... then just this week the Perciever project again matching AAAs that gamers are used to and these studios are supposedly "indie" heck F.I.S.T and Genshin Impact are very popular chinese games....
China just needs a decent Lord of the Rings and a Starwars type movie or franchise....... I have no doubt that China can easily dig into its literary past for a Chinese epic that rivals Lord of the rings, im not sure who can do the monkey king justice though lol.... ive hated most film adaptations...... lord of the rings was supposedly an unfilmable epic too....... the monkey king in videogame form though seems like its achieveable if funded right in Black Myth Wukong
Also with what we're seeing with Korean tv and filmmaking China should be able to produce similar content..... SHOULD not sure if something like "Squidgame" or anything that flirts with the gov or other sensitive issues would get made.... again i dont know how it works in china
i was actually surprised that HK is recently filming a scifi movie....... its weird seeing chinese scifi? to me? maybe because im not used to it, maybe because im also dreading poorly made scifi and chinese scifi at that??? its like seeing Indian scifi or super hero movies..... no offence to bollywood
John Wick has made western "HK" action movie tenable! But JW is definitely thanks to HK action movies and working with YWP and the Matrix etc
Im very excited to see and experience a different culture and different ideas and different franchises now...... most people are tired of starwars and the MCU for example....
saying that im sort of tired of the monkey king.... unless someone properly does the source material justice...
i lie its not even baby steps i think china or the chinese community want to take giant leaps and strides.... china will be on the moon soon for example!

When I watched Shang-chi and Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, I can't help but notice the incorporation of certain settings I usually find in watching xianxia and wuxia films and series in those Marvel movies. What I find striking are the plum, osmanthus and apple trees, trees with coloured leaves and blossoms that are typical settings in many Chinese wuxia and fantasy series.
I have already noticed this studio when I watched wuxia and xianxia. But I thought they were located in Hainan.

As a 2nd overseas Chinese we have lost much of our culture having had to move to different parts of world. But the sound of guzen and sight of mountains and the inimitable architecture of the ming roofs stirs something deep within us.
