- What's up, folks! I'm back with another Big Country reaction from their 1984 album Steeltown, and this time we listen to "Tall Ships Go," a song I couldn't fully track lyrically on a first listen, but one of my favorites sonically. So join me for a special track from Big Country. Cheers!
Also I recently set up a Patreon, so anyone interested in supporting what we do on this channel through donation can go here. Cheers! / shnootz

40 years later, still one of my favorites!
Thanks for this reaction video. Really love this band and have since the early 80's. This was absolutely their best album, which is saying something because The Crossing is an amazing album in its own right. There was so much garbage put out in the 80's with hairspray and tight pants that it was a real refreshing breeze to hear these guys and their music that actually had some meaning and lyrics that were thoughtful. I don't really think they ever got their due but thanks I can see from you reactions that this song especially rocks and really they just don't make music like they used to...its cliche but true all the same.
Hiya. I've only just found your channel. I've been a Big Country fan myself since 1983, and for me, it's always a treat to see someone discovering the band afresh. This is your first BC reaction video I've watched but I plan to get through all the others as well! This song is absolutely one of my faves of the band's entire catalog, and it (like the whole album) is so densely packed with sonic goodness that I think it's impossible to grasp it all...maybe ever! I've listened to this song hundreds of times-literally-and I still discover little sounds and pieces within it that I'd never noticed before. Thanks for taking this interest in the band, man!
Hey there! Sorry, it takes me a day or two now to catch up with all the comments, but cheers, I'm loving learning more about Big Country, and it really seems like their longtime fans are some of the most passionate around.
Hey my name is Terry. Big time fan of BC since the beginning. Played their music in my early bands in the 80's. Remained a fan till this day and even designed a bunch of 30th anniversary t-shirts for them around 2013-2015. Great take on Tall Ships Go. Looking forward to your other reactions.
Right on! There are many BC reactions in that playlist already, and more coming (usually one or two a month ). Cheers, and that's cool about the T-shirts!
Never understood why these guys faded away - their catalog is deep
This track is a banger!
One of my all time favorites!
There is a podcast called The Great Divide ( named after the Steeltown track of the same name), where they did a deep dive of the album. They had a great take on the song. Its a father and son conflict song. Its been a while since I listened to it, but this is what I took away from it. Sometimes we long for an ideal relationship with our fathers,. Stuart;s father might have had a drinking problem and was abusive. So you get a lyric like " If you're the enemy then you look a lot like me." It's sort of like, "I see how you treat us and I hate you, but there is nothing more that I want than to have that relationship that I only have in dreams.
I think this was radio worthy.
I dreamed I heard that you were dead
I dreamed I searched an empty bed
For a sign of you
And the sea called hard to me
Like a cell without a key
And I felt the distance
I watched the tall ships go
With the driftwood on the flow
With pride that grows in hardship
And I knew you were below
I hear your voice
And it keeps me from sleeping
Why must it always be dreams
When your voice comes to me?
I dreamed you felt the typhoon spit
And walked into the heart of it
While the seagulls cry
I know how to feel that call
It never suited me at all
But some are born to it
And you seemed so bright and hard
Like a bloody edge of sword
But if you're an enemy
Then you look a lot like me
I hear your voice
And it keeps me from sleeping
Why must it always be dreams
When your voice comes to me?
I dreamed you sailed me to the swamp
In a black boat
You spoke to me of things
Of the shame that years will bring
And I felt your hand shake
Though you always seemed so hard
Now I never see the sword
And I find the enemy
Has to feel the same as me
I hear your voice
And it keeps me from sleeping
Why must it always be dreams
When your voice comes to me
If memory serves me correctly I seem to remember that Stuarts dad was with the merchant navy when he was a young lad. So I'm sure he was tapping into that sense of longing and missing someone for months at a time. That would certainly be the inspiration for the song whilst not being truly all about his dad being away. One of the lines you couldn't make out ( took me years to work them out too so don't worry lol ) was
"I hear your voice and it keeps me from sleeping
Why must it always be dreams when your voice comes to me?" And also the one about the enemy is
"If you're an enemy, then you look a lot like me"
I think part of the problem especially on first listen is there is so much going on with drums, the bass being exquisite and of course the guitar lines in a lot of their songs that you don't focus on the lyrics at first. The brain can only handle so much at one time 😅
All the albums came with lyrics on the album sleeve !
I just followed along whenever I listened

Did you aye. Great contribution.
If you meet the women who loves this song...marry her.. so amazing..stay alive
A stand out track from this album for sure.
I absolutely loved this album when it came out, not a bad track on it, my only criticism is the recording/mastering quality isn't the best and it doesn't sound so good on a higher end setup, which is the only reason I don't play it so often. Shame
I'm Scottish and have been a fan of the band since the early 1980's. I still don't always hear the words clearly, either. 🙄
Steve Lillywhite has admitted that he could have done better with the mixing on the album. It was his first all digital recording so he was still getting a feel for the format. Vocals are much cleaner on the following albums.
Makes sense. Still love the sound, but it will be nice to hear those cleaner vocals going forward!
@@mattsnider2667 there's plans for Steve lillywhite to remix this classic album .Bruce Watson announced it on the big country fan page ....😘
I know that when you heard the first 2 or 3 seconds, you thought "I ask myself, is it a sin, to be flexible when the boat comes in?"
Haha, I didn't in the moment, but re-listening, wow, how did I miss that? Even weirder because I made a joke/reference to that song in the third episode of the Master, so it's a connection I've made in recent months.
@@mattsnider2667 I can understand purging DM from your mind (it's only natural), but surely it's post 1997 stuff, not Some Great Reward era!
Love your reactions. You should check out a a UA-cam channel "Rhythm4hire". It's a phenomenal drummer who covers a few BC tracks, including this. You come to realise just how good Mark is. Stay alive
