Guptaji is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. I find it difficult of how much he had witnessed first hand and how much is acquired. His story telling is so fascinating that it looks like he had witnessed the whole story from 1947 with his own eyes.
It's really a shame that most of Indians don't know about North Eastern part of their nation. The main reason could be mainstream media (print, tv, online) don't do major reporting. We need to change that.
Totally agree, even after living almost all my life in India I still know so little about the history of North eastern states, they have very little representation in our movie and television. Though I still remember their awesome choirs during Christmas on Door Darshan. Main streem India needs to get back in touch with indigenous tribes and cultures in the NE

#Nagaland: Story behind, according to ground level information about the brutal massacre in Mon district || 17 villagers were brutally massacred by the Indian Army but govt says "Probe", the centre says "condolences" and Army says "Regrets" - but no statements on accountability and punishing the murderers. Let's check the ground level information that happened on the 4th evening at the massacre site: The incident took place on the night of 4th December where the six Villagers from Oting Village who were heading back home from coal mining work at Tiru in a Pickup mini-truck were ambushed and killed by the Indian Army mistaking them for militants. They were unarmed and possessed no hint to be mistaken for militants but were murdered in cold blood. On hearing the gunshots, the village youths rushed to the spot being apprehensive given that, the individuals didn't return home from work, only to find the mini-truck and the Indian Army trying to hide the dead bodies of the six individuals by wrapping and loading them in their truck. It was reported that they tried to act normal and some even put stuff above the dead bodies and even sat on it to avoid suspicion. The remains of blood from the mini-truck was also attempted to hide by putting sand in it. This indicates that their intention to hide the blunder made by them. Upon seeing the sceptical situation there, the village youths who appeared in the incident site searched the truck and found the dead bodies after which the violence broke out between the villagers and the army. The villagers burnt down the trucks of the army and started attacking them with Dao and the machete they were carrying with them. Had they carried the locally made guns, the situation would have been even worse for both sides. However, in retaliation to the attack by the villagers, the Army fired upon the villagers which led to the death of more individuals altogether 13 already and several left seriously injured. There are still some individuals missing in the jungle and their whereabouts are yet to be ascertained as to whether they are even alive or dead. [Today, 2 more were killed in the discriminate firing by the Assam Rifles/ Indian Army and the death toll rises to 17 now.]

On a tangent: the special forces unit that lost at dien Bien Phu was later sent to Algeria to quell the uprising there.. I tried to confirm this now, but couldn't find anything on internet, but I distinctly remember this. Would be grateful if someone can confirm this.

Bro indian constitution is only powerful because they came under it. It is powerfull because people believe in it. Its not a devine pamplet, its just a piece of paper with framework of how to run our country. It will only be binding Nagaland as long as Naga people respect and follow it. Its a document under which to unify different sets of people who are too different to one another.
Phizo was abroad. Shillong accord was signed without the concern of the leader Phizo and that was the reason most Nagas couldn't totally agree with the Shillong Accord. Without a clue of Shillong Accord, Isaac and Muivah came back from China and were totally against the Accord which led to formation of NSCN IM.
You are right about the factor leading to the formation of NSCN (IM) but the Shillong accord was not condemned convincingly by Phizo. In fact his younger brother were one of the representatives that signed the accord. Isak & Muivah (IM) requested many leaders including Phizo to condemned the accord but he remained silent. Perhaps Phizo already knew about the inevitable outcome. He never come back to nagaland & remained in London till his death.

That shows Phizo was not a person of integrity. An accord signed by key members should have been accepted by all and if that had happened there would have been lasting peace. And when there is lasting peace we would not even be discussing about AFSPA
There are more than 60 tribe of Nagas in Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal, Assam and Burma. 14 Recognised tribes in Nagaland, two non Nagas ie Kuki and Kachari, total 16 tribes in Nagaland and various unrecognized and sub-tribes in Nagaland today.
Just like us Mizo people, Nagas are very scattered. They have a community in Myanmar too. In Myanmar, we Mizo are called Chin and have a state with a population of over 600000. The Lai tribe has the largest population over 20 lakhs.

This is brilliantly put together. According to me the most important lesson from this is that it takes multi-pronged concerted effort to bring and keep the peace. Catch phrases and emotional slogans might look good for elections, but real solutions happen through hard work, compassion and pragmatism.
The Eastern Nagas were never under the rule of the Britishers and was free up to the stage when India got its Independence. It was only in the year 1948, a year after India achieved independence that it came under the control of India and was placed under the External Affairs Ministry. After the statehood, Tuensang was not under Nagaland State Assembly but Tuensang had Regional Council for 10 years (1963-74) and till that time Nagaland State was kept under External affairs. The Tuensang District also participated in the Indian election for the first time. After the state election of 1974, Nagaland state was brough under Ministry of Home Affairs.

In the aftermath it will come out as a mistake and case of mistaken identity by the security forces. The credibility of the entire security forces is at question. How can you expect a force that relies on unconfirmed information or acting on their own volition and killing innocent civilians to protect the whole country.
Very Beautifully Explained. Am a veteran now, in 1987 qualified in CIJW. It was Deja Vu. Again as Civilian served in the area of NE in 2001 to 2005. For non initiated CIJW is Counter Insurgency & Jungle Warfare. But No doubt Nagas are great people. Interacted with so many of them.
As far as I know in 1966-1971,during the time when the MNF(Mizo National Front) have revolted against the Indian government, 400 Mizo civilians were killed, many of our men were beaten up to dead and many women have been raped and murdered by the Indian soldiers and many people are missing till this day. And the worst part, they use Jet Fighters on innocent Mizo civilians who doesn't even have any connections with the MNF in Aizawl and the Central Officials even said on the news, '' We don't want the Mizo people, we only want the land'', and even Morarji Desai said, '' All those Mizo people should be shifted to the hot deserts of Rajasthan'', Indira Gandhi too said, '' We drop ration'' by which she means bombing. Looking back at all those dark past, it's hard for us many Mizo to suppress our anger. Not only for us Mizo, but I think for some of the Nagas too. Back in those days, the only reason the MNA surrendered is because of the Church and the Mizo students,people who are born in 1950s are still in pain.But what can we do anyway. After all, we are a minority whose future is full of dangers. Right now, many more Bangladeshi immigrants, not only Bangladeshi immigrants, but some Bengali Hindus too are overpopulating us. If the Government of India wants us to always remain in the Indian Union, they should take actions as quickly as possible to prevent the upcoming revolution to happen. History is History, people may say, but if you guys are not the victim, you will not know how it feels.
You know your history but you don't know history of formation of Maharashtra. If maharastrian's would have picked guns in 1950s today Maharashtra would have been a country but our leader and people knew that we will be more prosperous with resources from the rest of india and rather then picking guns our people conducted peaceful protest for establishing state of Maharashtra. Still hundreds were martyred during the peaceful protest. Today Maharashtra is no1 in economic and infrastructure in whole india. But look at north-east. You people think indians as only UP, Biharis, Assamese, Bengalese and Punjabis. Plus if you listen speech of phizo you will notice superiority complex in him. He call indians 'black' which clearly tells us that he didn't know anything about india and indians. Pakistan and Chinese were architect's of these all insurgency's. One thing you should accept Naga's and mizo's picked the guns first and then union retaliated. There was no reason to for separating from union. It was just greed of power of few peoples which resulted in deaths of thousands. Even today some people say they are forced indians. Which I think says a lot about both Mizoram and Nagaland. Literate people with less thinking abilities.

So we have a tendency to just forgive, forget and move on. Instances such as the indiscriminate bombing by the Indian Air Force over Aizawl city are promptly forgotten by the Mizos because we don’t want to unnecessarily go back in history and open old wounds. You should read about the Indian Army’s strategy of the collectivisation of villages and interning the civilian population. I’ve also heard from the older generation about many instances of rape but we are too polite as a society to interview the victims and infringe on their privacy. So we just move on and forget.

Sir, thank you for the information. The history of Nagas have became narcissistic and not fully told of unsung heroes. The Eastern part of Nagaland, thier sacrifice and impact of that sacrifice is hindsighted. The first Naga tribe to shoot at Arms force was Yimchunger as promised by AZ Phizo to give recognition on doing so. In all good faith, I would love to hear Eastern Nagas part of history from you.

Based on the hearsay stories of friends and news from the media, the insurgency in Nagaland, the experience in living there is simply terrifying. The best part is that Shekhar Gupta has literally audited all the events that took place from the time of Independence and before. Thank you Shekhar.
The problem starts from the beginning itself. The Naga issue is neither "insurgency" nor "separatism". This is how wrong understanding gets amplified. Nagas were never under any foreign power either by conquest or consent. Indian army is occupying Naga lands by force. It is a resistance against foreign aggression. Kuknalim!

I have huge resepect for army but injujustice is done by army in this case and strict action should be taken against people who commited such mistakes, peoples who lost their lifes their families must be componsated, we have such a great intel. agencies still we commit such mistakes is just unacceptable for our national security and army standards.
Very well researched and a great speaker. However, I am a little discontented because of no mention of the atrocities face by the Nagas. Our grandparents and parents still live to tell the story of brutal crimes and acts committed by the Indian army. The rapes in our churches, maiming and murdering the innocent, burning villages are just excerpts of the hell faced by our forefathers and elders. Even if Nagaland becomes a sovereign nation or not; the cries of the innocent souls will always echo in our lands and hills, it will be forever etched in our hearts.

Thanks for doing an amazing homework, however there is a very important and most crucial reason why the insurgency could not really die till today in Nagaland Or NE in general and in part why this protracted negotiations: 1. It's important for everyone to know what a tribal people thinks,what are the things closest to their heart and intertwined with their way of life. And remember North East tribal are not like Mainland tribals either by looks Or mindset as in N.E. they are in total control of their own land Or State since the time of their forefathers(People due to their ignorance clubbed them like mainland Indian tribal which is totally so wrong. This video is inadequate and vague, and it does not explain the history of Naga political struggle in its totality. It should be labelled as MISLEADING. Naga freedom struggle started way before 1947. The Naga Club was formed in 1918 which aimed to protect Nagas from foreign occupation and Naga Nationalism. Nagas retaliated British occupation since the 1832 and up to 1879 when in the Battle of Khonoma Deputy Commissioner Guybon Henry Damant was killed. Naga Nationalism movement did not start from 1947. Get your facts straight and stop misleading people Shekhar Gupta. You also does not have the right to say that you "know so much about Nagaland attitude" as if all Nagas share the same cultural personalities. Even anthropologists who studied the Nagas don't have the audacity to generalize about Nagas like that (except the colonial administrators who were actually racist and ethnocentric). If you want to share Naga history, do it accurately free from personal biases and personal stories which cannot be verified.
This story can be brought up as a documentary movie to represent the history of the Northeastern part of India. Why doesn't print start a story telling documentary series for the history of India. It would be an amazing thing to do. Please go for it ,Sir.

#Nagaland: Story behind, according to ground level information about the brutal massacre in Mon district ||
17 villagers were brutally massacred by the Indian Army but govt says "Probe", the centre says "condolences" and Army says "Regrets" - but no statements on accountability and punishing the murderers. Let's check the ground level information that happened on the 4th evening at the massacre site:
The incident took place on the night of 4th December where the six Villagers from Oting Village who were heading back home from coal mining work at Tiru in a Pickup mini-truck were ambushed and killed by the Indian Army mistaking them for militants. They were unarmed and possessed no hint to be mistaken for militants but were murdered in cold blood.
On hearing the gunshots, the village youths rushed to the spot being apprehensive given that, the individuals didn't return home from work, only to find the mini-truck and the Indian Army trying to hide the dead bodies of the six individuals by wrapping and loading them in their truck. It was reported that they tried to act normal and some even put stuff above the dead bodies and even sat on it to avoid suspicion. The remains of blood from the mini-truck was also attempted to hide by putting sand in it. This indicates that their intention to hide the blunder made by them.
Upon seeing the sceptical situation there, the village youths who appeared in the incident site searched the truck and found the dead bodies after which the violence broke out between the villagers and the army.
The villagers burnt down the trucks of the army and started attacking them with Dao and the machete they were carrying with them. Had they carried the locally made guns, the situation would have been even worse for both sides.
However, in retaliation to the attack by the villagers, the Army fired upon the villagers which led to the death of more individuals altogether 13 already and several left seriously injured. There are still some individuals missing in the jungle and their whereabouts are yet to be ascertained as to whether they are even alive or dead.
[Today, 2 more were killed in the discriminate firing by the Assam Rifles/ Indian Army and the death toll rises to 17 now.]

Phizo was abroad. Shillong accord was signed without the concern of the leader Phizo and that was the reason most Nagas couldn't totally agree with the Shillong Accord. Without a clue of Shillong Accord, Isaac and Muivah came back from China and were totally against the Accord which led to formation of NSCN IM.
You are right about the factor leading to the formation of NSCN (IM) but the Shillong accord was not condemned convincingly by Phizo. In fact his younger brother were one of the representatives that signed the accord. Isak & Muivah (IM) requested many leaders including Phizo to condemned the accord but he remained silent. Perhaps Phizo already knew about the inevitable outcome. He never come back to nagaland & remained in London till his death.

Just like us Mizo people, Nagas are very scattered. They have a community in Myanmar too. In Myanmar, we Mizo are called Chin and have a state with a population of over 600000. The Lai tribe has the largest population over 20 lakhs.

The Eastern Nagas were never under the rule of the Britishers and was free up to the stage when India got its Independence. It was only in the year 1948, a year after India achieved independence that it came under the control of India and was placed under the External Affairs Ministry.
After the statehood, Tuensang was not under Nagaland State Assembly but Tuensang had Regional Council for 10 years (1963-74) and till that time Nagaland State was kept under External affairs.
The Tuensang District also participated in the Indian election for the first time. After the state election of 1974, Nagaland state was brough under Ministry of Home Affairs.

As far as I know in 1966-1971,during the time when the MNF(Mizo National Front) have revolted against the Indian government, 400 Mizo civilians were killed, many of our men were beaten up to dead and many women have been raped and murdered by the Indian soldiers and many people are missing till this day. And the worst part, they use Jet Fighters on innocent Mizo civilians who doesn't even have any connections with the MNF in Aizawl and the Central Officials even said on the news, '' We don't want the Mizo people, we only want the land'', and even Morarji Desai said, '' All those Mizo people should be shifted to the hot deserts of Rajasthan'', Indira Gandhi too said, '' We drop ration'' by which she means bombing. Looking back at all those dark past, it's hard for us many Mizo to suppress our anger. Not only for us Mizo, but I think for some of the Nagas too. Back in those days, the only reason the MNA surrendered is because of the Church and the Mizo students,people who are born in 1950s are still in pain.But what can we do anyway. After all, we are a minority whose future is full of dangers. Right now, many more Bangladeshi immigrants, not only Bangladeshi immigrants, but some Bengali Hindus too are overpopulating us. If the Government of India wants us to always remain in the Indian Union, they should take actions as quickly as possible to prevent the upcoming revolution to happen. History is History, people may say, but if you guys are not the victim, you will not know how it feels.

So we have a tendency to just forgive, forget and move on. Instances such as the indiscriminate bombing by the Indian Air Force over Aizawl city are promptly forgotten by the Mizos because we don’t want to unnecessarily go back in history and open old wounds. You should read about the Indian Army’s strategy of the collectivisation of villages and interning the civilian population. I’ve also heard from the older generation about many instances of rape but we are too polite as a society to interview the victims and infringe on their privacy. So we just move on and forget.

Today it's a dark Sunday of the Nagas , the indian army has killed 13 innocents civilians as the army conducted operation as they get an information from intelligence of insurgency movements but mistakenly fired at civilians who were returning home from mining place 😢😡
This was really sad. I hope all those responsible gets the strictest of the punishments. 😢

The history of Nagas have became narcissistic and not fully told of unsung heroes. The Eastern part of Nagaland, thier sacrifice and impact of that sacrifice is hindsighted. The first Naga tribe to shoot at Arms force was Yimchunger as promised by AZ Phizo to give recognition on doing so. In all good faith, I would love to hear Eastern Nagas part of history from you.
As a kid things would always be a little tense when we would leave the confines of army camp in Nagaland in 90's. Now I understand the deep history behind that tention. Great segment print and shekhar Gupta sir.

Excellent rendition of the problem in Nagaland beginning from scratch. To have worked in such a dangerous area and to interact with so many divergent Naga Tribal Chiefs is simply extraordinary. Based on the hearsay stories of friends and news from the media, the insurgency in Nagaland, the experience in living there is simply terrifying. The best part is that Shekhar Gupta has literally audited all the events that took place from the time of Independence and before. Thank you Shekhar.

The 1962 story is written by Mr. Sanjoy Hazarika in his book called "The strangers of the mist"
The problem starts from the beginning itself. The Naga issue is neither "insurgency" nor "separatism". This is how wrong understanding gets amplified. Nagas were never under any foreign power either by conquest or consent. Indian army is occupying Naga lands by force. It is a resistance against foreign aggression. Kuknalim!

I have huge resepect for army but injujustice is done by army in this case and strict action should be taken against people who commited such mistakes, peoples who lost their lifes their families must be componsated, we have such a great intel. agencies still we commit such mistakes is just unacceptable for our national security and army standards.

However, I am a little discontented because of no mention of the atrocities face by the Nagas.
Our grandparents and parents still live to tell the story of brutal crimes and acts committed by the Indian army. The rapes in our churches, maiming and murdering the innocent, burning villages are just excerpts of the hell faced by our forefathers and elders.
Even if Nagaland becomes a sovereign nation or not; the cries of the innocent souls will always echo in our lands and hills, it will be forever etched in our hearts.
Exactly! Why are those stories never discussed? Is it propaganda on the part of GOI or are the people who make these presentations afraid to be called "anti nationals" or do they simply not know the truth? only a number of us Naga millennials who've read books by some esteemed Naga writers and/or heard oral tales from our elders know about those atrocities meted out to our forefathers by the Indian army. While the rest, such as most Gen Z Nagas and even a number of millennial Nagas would be thanking these presentors for their biased reports and stories . Smh!

Sir the other day I saw your video about northeast Sustainable Development Goals where you said unemployment and poor governance is one of the reasons for the poor performance of the state and increase in insurgency. Thank you sir, this is the third time I am watching this, and everytime I watch it, it is gives me new revelation and the real inside history of the nagas struggle for independence.
Those who trust this "guy" is a bunch of people who didn't understand or know the proper History of India and Naga; please can anyone state any relationship that Naga and India have during 17 Or 18 century, or even in the early apart of 19 century.

Let me make you clear; the whole lots of story is not insurgency but a people movement; that's why so far the Indian Army force can't suppress the movement.
I wish the Indian government and people will understand how people in general has suffer during the era of British colonialism; and it doesn't continue the post-colonialism towards the Naga, "Please live the Naga alone."

Mr. Shekhar Gupta don't try to manipulate the Nagas with your deceptive Indiansation thoughts.
Nagalim is not India and India is not Nagalim. The Indian's desperate crusade and campaign of Indianisation of Nagas will never happen not today neither in the next thousand years so please keet that in mind.
Naga youths today are more aware of the history and the blood stained hands of Indian occupiers. The only way forward to let peace prevail in Nagaland(Nagalim) is driving out the Indian occupational force from Nagaland. India must leave Nagalim, if not today but definitely some day!

Thanks for doing an amazing homework, however there is a very important and most crucial reason why the insurgency could not really die till today in Nagaland Or NE in general and in part why this protracted negotiations:
1. It's important for everyone to know what a tribal people thinks,what are the things closest to their heart and intertwined with their way of life. And remember North East tribal are not like Mainland tribals either by looks Or mindset as in N.E. they are in total control of their own land Or State since the time of their forefathers(People due to their ignorance clubbed them like mainland Indian tribal which is totally so wrong. Example in Nagaland,Nagas are the administrators of their own state, everything is run by the Nagas themselves whether the state Police,judicial, etc2 from top to bottom)Therefore,the nagas being a tribal ' LAND,RELIGION and IDENTITY ( culture) are of utmost important. Until these 3 things are not in their hands or they feel that they're not gonna be given full rights as per their satisfaction long term solution will be difficult.
2.Nagas are diverse, you have pointed out correctly,but the tribal blood relations amongst them as a NAGA is too strong which is unbreakable, inspite of such difference. So, why!! Refer the above ( Land, Religion & Identity) to get your answer. These 3 things again binds them together at the end.

This is true journalism where facts and figures are collected and presented effectively to all. Unfortunately we can't see much of it in present day mainstream media. Nagas are indeed very freindly people. I also found that nagas have high regards and respect for teachers.

This video is inadequate and vague, and it does not explain the history of Naga political struggle in its totality. It should be labelled as MISLEADING.
Naga freedom struggle started way before 1947. The Naga Club was formed in 1918 which aimed to protect Nagas from foreign occupation and Naga Nationalism. Nagas retaliated British occupation since the 1832 and up to 1879 when in the Battle of Khonoma Deputy Commissioner Guybon Henry Damant was killed. Naga Nationalism movement did not start from 1947. Get your facts straight and stop misleading people Shekhar Gupta.
You also does not have the right to say that you "know so much about Nagaland attitude" as if all Nagas share the same cultural personalities. Even anthropologists who studied the Nagas don't have the audacity to generalize about Nagas like that (except the colonial administrators who were actually racist and ethnocentric).
If you want to share Naga history, do it accurately free from personal biases and personal stories which cannot be verified.
This story can be brought up as a documentary movie to represent the history of the Northeastern part of India.
Why doesn't print start a story telling documentary series for the history of India. It would be an amazing thing to do. Please go for it ,Sir.

The perpetrators must be arrested, fired from their army job and brought to court. They must be punished for murder of the young fellows without excuses.
