I put stall mats under the camper to provide a little cushion and to increase the traction between camper and bed. The traction is needed until a Swifty underestimates his length and requires a speedy sterring jerk to avoid a collision. Also helps on fire roads. I also insert 2x6s between camper and wheelwells.
I just received my 2019 Cirrus and I had the Fastgun system installed and love it. I paid $2500.00 installed by D&H in Jacksonville Florida. I couldn't install it myself because of my age (70) and in my younger day's I would of did it myself. One thing I ordered was the locks for them because they say that the Fastguns are sought after by thieves. So being a retired cop I'm proactive in the deterance of theft. Now I could of electrified them but I chose not just kidding.
Taylor, been a subscriber for a few months now. Love the vids, sir. I have a Lance 975, and I use the Torklift frame mounts and their Fastguns. You are correct. They are extremely expensive, but well worth it for me. Thanks for taking the time to address an often overlooked concept. And you did it with ease.
We use the Happijac. One of our first trips in the truck camper we left a tie-down at the fuel pump. About 80 miles out, we realized it. We went back and retrieved it. So now we place the tie down in the floorboard of the driver's side while fueling up. It's all a learning curve. Happy trails.
Well done. Great info. I appreciate your perspective on the size/weight of your camper. So many folks are looking for the 1 answer for every persons situation.
Love the videos. I have the Torklift talon frame mounts and I’ve been using the same positioning for all of my tie downs since I purchased in Feb 2017. The rear arms were always in the outermost position creating potential for more flex. As a result my tie down arms started to bend more and more over time. I contacted torklift and they sent new ones and I did a side by side comparison of new and old ones and it was a HUGE difference how much they bent! My recommendation is if anyone has the Talon setup, use the inner most holes so the arms stick out very little.
I hope you come back soon. I have watched your videos for a couple of years now, but finally subscribed even though you have not been active for a long time. I have a Host Everest, triple slide out for over a year-now and love it. I am also a boater with a 35 foot fly bridge boat so I was amused when you bought you boat. I’d love to hear from you. Al
Hi Darren, Thanks for you comment over at my channel. Looks like you have a growing collection of videologs. Looking forward to browsing through them and hearing more about your travels. James
I have the Fast Gun models, the beauty of them is once you establish the correct tightness and fit you simply release the handle to remove. Re installing involves no further adjustment. Just put that jack back where it was and lock the handle down. That works in principle except the camper never loads exactly the same. So there is a bit of fiddling but they are easy to adjust and reliable.
We went with the Torklift tie-downs and Fastguns. Very good products. We've never had any shifting of the camper, even in very strong crosswinds or when off-road and at some extreme angles.
I wanted torklift camper tie downs but they would not fit my truck. I designed a tie down system that bolted to the frame and had a local welder make it for me. They work great and cost less than $200. The camper came with the good quick release turnbuckles and I was good to go.
Hey Phillip. We have a 2006 Ford F150 with running boards. Torklifts don't work and neither do the tie downs recommended by Happijac. What kind of truck do you have and what did you do? We are able to make the rear tie downs by Happijac work but are at a loss as to what to use for the front. We would like frame mounted if possible. Thanks for your help!
For the record, the frame mounts in combination with the tie downs you describe can exceed $1000. Thankfully, our truck camper weighs exactly half of what yours does (fully loaded) and is secured with bed mounted Brophy mounts at less than 1/4 the cost. I've made a few simple mods to the system and it's working wonderfully. We have over 10,000 miles on them without any signs of stress or issues. We've traveled many hilly, rutted, pot-holed, off camber forest roads without any issues. The most important part of that equation is the rear Hellwig sway bar we installed. Our 3/4 ton Ram with the 2250 lb camper isn't stressed in the least and makes a great combination :-)
Taylor bud, Buying a truck camper this week and did a quick google thought I was tripping when I thought I recognized you. Hope all is well 🤙🤙 thanks for the video
Take a trip to LaGrande & tour the Northwood factory its an amazing tour. If you are going to buy Fastguns do it in Oregon (no taxes) as a Canadian you will save money & its a great chance to see the impressive factory.
Thanks for the information. I have a truck, also bought frame tie downs with fast guns next....... a Camper which I plan to buy in about Feb. I am looking forward to it, full time. Perhaps I will see you on the road. Best wishes, keep having fun.
Another excellent video. I used the Happijac system for 25 years on my 9.5 foot Lance, and they did their job well. When I purchased my new dually, I spared no expense and set it up with the Torklift tie-downs and Fast Guns. Wow! What a difference in keeping that camper planted. The old style sheet metal (truck bed) and bumper tie down system is probably great for light campers, but I found that driving in high cross-winds would sometimes cause the camper to lift momentarily from the pickup bed as wind was trying to get under it. That makes for some white-knuckled driving! I love the Torklift system, although, as you mentioned, quite expensive
FreeToRoam same here happijacs first go round and on new truck went torklift. Yes MUCH better for my 11ft camper. My question to you is about your fast guns. How do they adjust? Are they spring loaded? I find at times I adjust my spring loaded turn buckels quite a lot. Any info is appreciated.
Hi KZimmer - the Fastguns are spring loaded much like the front turnbuckles of the Happijacs, and also adjust tension by screwing the threaded half into the polished barrel. A rubber O-ring is used as a guide for determining amount of tension. After installing, and before locking the handle down, slide the O-ring up to the bottom of the barrel, then lock the handle in place. I don't have the instructions in front of me, but I believe they recommend a 1/4 inch of spring compression to get a few hundred lbs. of preload on them. When the barrel pulls away from the O-ring 1/4", you have achieved the proper preload. If not, screw the threaded rod in or out and try again. As long as you load the camper the same distance from the front of the bed each time, you will rarely have to adjust the pretension, if ever. All you do on the next camper loading episode is just install the turnbuckles and lock down the handle with one easy motion. Takes about 10 seconds per each corner. Very quick and easy to use after the first time adjustments are made. They come with pins to keep the handle in place while moving. I'm completely satisfied with them! Just worry that they'll get stolen, but they sell optional locks if that's a concern. Hope this helps.
I enjoy watching your videos I hope you have safe travels across Canada I have a pickup truck that I have a pop-up truck camper it's very nice but I didn't know about those turnbuckles about the spring loaded very good information thanks for your feedback on that very helpful
You’re right to feel skeptical about the bumper system. I’ve seen quite a few trucks with bumpers that have either shifted or appear damaged. The frame system makes more sense and seems to be more secure. Nice job!
Great videos! I agree with you on frame mounting I think it’s the way to go for safety especially if you get off of the highway. I Have the Torklift Frame mounts and Fastguns and love them on my 990.
Taylor Dzaman yeah I was lucky the frame mounts and tie downs were part of the purchase package of my 990 so I just had to pay a little more to upgrade to the fastguns. They are sweet for sure
Good explanation. We have that Happi-Jack system that secures to the bed. Our camper, however, is nowhere near the size of yours. So we are happy with our Happi-Jack system. 😉
Hello Taylor this is Rand I have a Lance 975 camper with the fast guns tie downs just to up date you there awesome got them for 600.00 here California.
My camper only weighs 1,700. I have the Happy Jack system, with the snap down quick system. I got all of it for $250. Very quick to secure my camper. With the weight of you camper frame mount is the only way to go.
My dad built a jack system for his camper, a company makes it called stable lift, all the jacks are connected directly to the frame no tie downs needed!
Don't feel pressured to "produce" -- a video every day is a very hard schedule to maintain over the long run (burnout at some point)! IMO, a video every few days/once per week is a reasonable expectation for viewers...at least for this viewer. ;-) BTW...those expensive "fast connect" type of turnbuckles sound great, but being easy to install it seems logical to assume they'd also be easy to steal! At those prices, I'd want them to be theft-resistant (at the very least). Couldn't afford to be replacing them... -- BR
I love our Fastguns too. Amazing customer service too. Torklift will tell you to set the tie-downs pointing to the rear at the rear,... and point the fronts towards the front. Then use the Fastguns on the most forward point at front, and most rear point at the rear. This gets the Fastguns as parallel to the ground as possible.
Hey I bought a pickup that has the torqlift system, and got 4 spring turnbuckles on CL in my own hometown (what are the odds) for 40 bucks for the set. I'm going to see (and hopefully buy) a great used camper today. I will know how to use the tie downs and turnbuckles correctly thanks to you. Your video was very good and thanks for posting it.
Great video! Happijac on last truck, dealer installed. Went this route on new truck torklift, spring loaded tie downs on all four, plus airlift airbags. 4000lb Lance. Seriously looking at fast guns.
I built my own camper 30 years ago and had the restraints which were to slide uot, but, even though I oiled them, they rusted in place and I could not get them out. I used turnbuckles as well and given the smaller unit they worked pretty well. However, I would rather use the snap gun fasteners so you do on have turn them. I think they are faster and are easier/faster to remove.
I also am going to live in my camper. I like your system. Looks like you have the option of dismounting and mounting the camper, vs. the other system which seems more permanent.
Well, I just inherited 4 spring-loaded turnbuckles and got a Torklift system. I have a pretty light camper... but, I would rather have too much than too little. Sounds like I should be good to go.
Invent a series of square or round tubing that uses quick disonnects (Quick release pins that connect two pieces of tubing) from a distance looks like a solid mount from your extensions up to your camper and across from front to back and down to your frame mounts. These would bolt to several places on the camper, so your weakest link is less along aline of those wimpy camper connections. Then you can have that burly looking Outback look of a camper tiedown system and still be able to set your camper down off your truck. Not mocking here, just a thought.
You are definitely giving me a great education on truck campers that will make my decisions a lot easier in the future. I agree with you about frame mounting but I think I would get the spring loaded turnbuckles for all 4. Like you said it all depends on your comfort level. What is the life span of these spring loaded turnbuckles? Seems you would want to replace before they fail.
I just bought a camper with four of the fast guns and have a quandary. My front mount is the happijac box mount and the back is the bumper mount that I plan on changing when I get back out to Az where My welder is . The back fast guns will work but the front ones are too long as they are made for the torq lift mounts . What a bummer .Gonna try to figure out a solution but may have to sell 2 and buy the shorter ones .
Thanks Taylor! I am going to be purchasing a lighter weight camper, probably 2000 lbs max wet weight. What do you think about the Brophy's? They fasten and install in your truck rails. By the way, no class B for you. Please stay in a truck camper. I think they are a tad bit more versatile. Hope you are doing well!
I had a set of Brophys, returned them after one use. I think they would be fine if you stayed on pavement and very little offroad use. They had alot of flex, and by flex i mean not on the brophys themselves, they were flexing because the sheet metal on the box was flexing over small bumps.
I agree with your purchases. Those fast guns at $900 Canadian are ridiculous. Thats without locks! someone could come along and swipe them! add another $100 for fancy fast gun locks. ill do a little more hand cranking for the money thanks.
Great videos! I don't have a truck camper yet (on my bucket list). I just can't believe that in general, those tie-down systems can actually hold a camper to a truck. How secure is it?
I ordered the tie down system from Happijac for my Ford F-150, but it doesn't install on the interior bed. Instead, I would have to drill a 1/2' hole in front of the fender and install a bracket there. I'm not willing to drill a hole in my truck so I'm sending the system back. I'm disappointed because the system that I saw on a truck and thought I ordered mounted like you describe on your video. I'm not looking at the frame system that you have. Thanks for the video.
Where do you get under your tie downs? I swear I think my bed is going to tip sometimes. I had heavy duty shocks age additional Leah springs put in and I feel like my camper sway
Wow sorry just re read what I wrote. I need under mounts but am having trouble finding them. My camper moved around quite a bit. It is secured with those turn buckles on the bed brackets that the previous owner gave us when we bought the camper. It's a 08 shadow cruiser pop up
Learning so much from your videos! When you are parked for the night, do you loosen your turnbuckles and put down your jacks to take pressure off the truck for the night? Any concerns about someone taking your frame mounts while you are parked and asleep? We have locks for the Fast Guns..
my rear turnbuckles keep loosing up? Do I really need the happy jack turn buckles? My camper is a Adventure 810 and fully loaded it is about 3400 pds. I just bought a dully and love it.
Hi. Just wondering about the strength of the Torklift frame mounted system. Would you be able to tell me the tube diameter and wall thinkness? Have you had any issues with them? Thanks
I just installed a full set of frame mounted Torklift on 2000 F350 dually. Well made except the adjustable tubes that come to the outside. They are not all that thick and would probably fail first in extreme off road conditions. I plan on replacing them in the future with a thicker wall square tube or solid bar stock. I had to slightly modify the frame brackets to fit. Overall an ok system, expensive but good.
Do u also use tiedowns for front to rear movement of camper? These u discussed seem more for rocking, right? Don't know if adding more tiedowns would b redundant? But, looking four a cheaper way to just get started rolling down the road... Thanks, JD
Taylor, I have a plug coming out of my Lance 815 truck camper. I believe it is for DC power between the truck and the camper. What is the best method to connect it. I have a 1999 f 250 and don't see where I would connect it.
I got a 2012 Ram 3500 dually Mega Cab. What # of torklift i need for the front and back. Also i need the 2 extension bracket for the front cylinder. Parts # Thank you. I love your vidéo.
I just purchased a new 1,600 lb. Travel Lite 800X camper It's on a F150. The dealer installed frame mounts and solid TL turnbuckles for a whopping 1,200$. One rear attachment point ripped out on my way home. The dealer is 1500 miles away so I can't really go back. Should I change out all 4 to spring mounts or just the rear set? Any less expensive solution? Thanks for the great videos.

Miss his channel. He always did a great job.
I like the idea of attachment to the frame. I wish you had shown how they are attached to the frame?
Hi Taylor thank you bud you make it so easy to get the camper set we are getting we are getting the tie down set you suggested your buying

All good info by the way I'm leaving for Alaska from Florida in June and being a retired Navy Photographer I'm going to photograph the trip.

Really liking your whole video series Taylor! Look forward to all to come.
Tork lift all the way and fast guns are worth the money. We use them with locks find them bullet proof and easy
Well, I just inherited 4 spring-loaded turnbuckles and got a Torklift system. I have a pretty light camper... but, I would rather have too much than too little. Sounds like I should be good to go.
Nice work on your videos! Your living my dream. Keep the videos coming.
Invent a series of square or round tubing that uses quick disonnects (Quick release pins that connect two pieces of tubing) from a distance looks like a solid mount from your extensions up to your camper and across from front to back and down to your frame mounts. Great video! Good information. Stay safe.
Great video bro!
We call those quick release ones jaw breakers. Don't get too close to them when popping them off with any amount of tension on them

Thanks Taylor, really great information!

Hey can you showing us how to switch 3 way fridges to propane gas
I have read that Lance recommends struts for the overhang, what is your thoughts on this? I see yours does not have any.
Do you have air bags on your truck.
fastguns seems like they would be pretty fast to disappear , Can the fastguns be locked ?
Thankyou for your great enfo.taylor.
You are so welcome !
Are you in maple ridge ??
Thanks, that was perfect info for me.

what would work best for my 1974 Alaskan pop up to my 2004 toyota tundra.great videos very informative.
Also, I went back and looked at my receipt. I paid $400 for the Fast Gun turnbuckles. That was for 4......
I agree, frame not bumper. If bumper goes, so does camper.
cdLady54 Marengo that’s not true
if you attach to the bumper of a tundra , good luck , they are very thin , id guess its going to bend the bumper
It's a 08 shadow cruiser pop up
Do you think an extended cab truck would help your towing your camper and the quality of your ride?
What do you recommend for a slide in camper for a 2003 dodge ram 8 foot bed?
I know 4yrs ago but really how tight should turnbuckles be??
Are you based out of whistler ? Thanks :)
Awesome videos.. how do you determine what size truck bed is needed for a truck Rv.
Basically a short box or long . There are truck campers to fit each !
Get yourself some TorkLift fastguns, they are expensive but worth it IMO
Learning so much from your videos! When you are parked for the night, do you loosen your turnbuckles and put down your jacks to take pressure off the truck for the night? Any concerns about someone taking your frame mounts while you are parked and asleep? We have locks for the Fast Guns..
my rear turnbuckles keep loosing up? Do I really need the happy jack turn buckles? My camper is a Adventure 810 and fully loaded it is about 3400 pds. I just bought a dully and love it.
Why are there 2 holes in the forklift tiedown? Can you use either hole?
Sooooo are these frame mounted or what lol 😆
Great video as always mate, just one question and it may seem daft one but how do you tighten your tie-downs??
I have a truck camper but don’t have any turnbuckle brackets or anything could I use ratchet straps tel I do?
What about trucks with retractable running boards do the mounts get in the way?
Thanks, JD
It’s upside down always put threaded end down and this will keep water and dirt out .
I love your vidéo.
im planning to get like a 1500 lb pop up truck camper so I should be ok with the tiedowns esp offroading, thoughts?
I just purchased a new 1,600 lb. Travel Lite 800X camper It's on a F150. The dealer installed frame mounts and solid TL turnbuckles for a whopping 1,200$. One rear attachment point ripped out on my way home. The dealer is 1500 miles away so I can't really go back.
Should I change out all 4 to spring mounts or just the rear set? Any less expensive solution? Thanks for the great videos.
So why don't you have the spring-loaded ones on the back?
Honestly they have worked great for me so far !
GOT TO HAVE THE CHAIN FREE TL's BUT U DO HAVE TO LOCK THEM THE BEST U CAN
How do you know how tight your tie downs should be?
I just go by feel !! The front ones are only suppose to move half an inch !
I needed to know this, thanks
