Shotokan takes work, lots... I came to shotokan with a Sankyu in Judo and Shodan in Tae kwon do.... din't matter.... 6 years later with one year teaching as Nikyu... I achieved Shodan... My Sensei then told me I was a advanced beginner. Kata and the perfection of it translates to pure power in combat.. Their are no shortcuts in Shotokan , only blood , sweat and tears..
In my opinion you are extremely wrong, Mr(s).I personally train Kase-Ha Shotokan Karate in Sweden under my Sensei whom were trained by Kase himself (5th dan). I do not see myself as an athlete nor a gladiator. I see myself as a survivor, because this is what I am being taught by my Sensei.Not to perform on a stage or to win a tournament, but to be able to defend myself against a close combat attack. It helps not just physically to train this, as you gain confidence to stand up to others. Respect
@melikab I understand how you feel, and I was merely making an opinion that I don't like Kata's, when I trained, I did them to pass the belt tests, and they do help create a perfect technique. I have never scrapped with anyone whether training - in the military - in real life where it is not a completely spontaneous action/reaction. Just expressing my opinion is all and you are entitled to yours. Peace ~R
@CentredOne Front kick is the only one you need? Round house, side, back, low--none of these are needed? What about when your opponent side steps a few degrees?
@IEKUKATAKA i dont get wat ur saying. shotokan karate is a martial art since it has both defensive and offensive elements incorporated and it aims to protect the individual. it is also a codified system, as any martial arts discipline is. Its also a combination of several Okinawan and other martial arts. However, since most people dont need to use it in combat situations nowadays, it can also be a sport, hence we have competitions and championships. Shotokan also originates from Okinawa.
@IEKUKATAKA In my opinion competitions won by points or "whose kata looks better"-matches turn it into a sport. I would not call Shotokan itself a sport.. it comes down to the way you train and what you strive for.
@Squats200 They wait until the opponent slips up or moves into there area before they strike, it's smart fighting, it's what separates a good fighter from a common brawler. As for not being able to hit a boxer, well simple logic my friend, legs are longer then arms, boxers don't kick, therefore a karate student could easily knock out a boxer before they are even in range to punch.
@sroedner your problem with his comment lies not in his reasoning, but in the truth of his premises. Premise 1: "Shotokan is a sport" is false. Premise 2 "Sports are not martial arts" is false, unless he means "not all sports are martial arts" (which won't get his conclusion, so he probably didn't mean it). The modus ponens form is so/so, but it only guarantees true conclusions if the premises are true. And they're not.
Why is it so robotic and they stand there waiting to be struck. Only then will they go back to their starting point again. They wouldn't be able to hit a boxer.
@IEKUKATAKA Your comment is affected by over-simplification. You apply syllogism to discussion but modern logic moved way beyond Aristotle long time ago!
@CentredOne Rotating slightly? It's possible but not desirable. It would take too long. Front kick is not a versatile kick. You would have to rotate and then execute the kick. You've likely been swept by this point. If they shift 90+ degrees you had better have something else in your arsenal.
@IEKUKATAKA well that would mean boxing wrestling sambo thai boxing brazillian jiu jitsu sanda kung fu kick boxing and judo are all not martial arts? so what is an martial art as you seem to know everything?
@CRAMERR69 I get upset when people say that. Katas form the basis of whatever freestyle/sparring we do in shotokan karate, all through the bunkai`s we take frrom them, so I dont get why anybody would say katas are stupid. its only stupid if you`re waving ur arms n legs around without knowing what you`re actually doing. its like saying grammar is stupid. is it? you wouldnt be able to speak without it, and yet somehow its stupid. ?!!!!
@misakisheraz lost last week huh....funny. last i remember rampage got his ass beat and machida left the ring without any cuts or bruses. and only lost because of points from a few painless tags by wolf man's boxing.
if i were to choose whether to spar to a kyokushinkai or shotokan, i would rather choose kyokushinkai pure mortal combat my father was a kyokushin 4th dan. Yup i liked his styles. Believe me or not even our shihan told me(former kyokushin) "Shotokan is just a sports karate".
@IEKUKATAKA
Shotokan is much more than a sport.

Stewart Fowler I agree with you! I’ve been doing karate for about 7 years now.

@IEKUKATAKA But Shotokan was one of the first four original styles of karate. So how is it not karate?
I don't care what you guys all say but Karate is from Kung Fu origin of Hung Gar. Read the founder of Karate and what it means. Open hand form.
@CentredOne That's like saying you only need one block or one punch.
Is it the very best of Shotokan Karate?
@Squats200
They wait until the opponent slips up or moves into there area before they strike, it's smart fighting, it's what separates a good fighter from a common brawler. And so do I

Wow u cutting Shotokan short?
Da tutti questi commenti si può capire la stupidità del modo di ragionare occidentale in confronto allo spirito del karate tradizionale.
