Based on that, I came up with the following: Pattern 1: Starts at 3, 4 in 18 (a.k.a. the infamous 2-12-1-9-4 pattern) Pattern 2: Starts at 5, 4 in 15 Pattern 3: Starts at 11, 4 in 6 (curiously, Michael always aimed for 8 whenever this pattern came up... perhaps the 4 space came too soon in the pattern for him to memorize it properly?) Pattern 4: Starts at 17, 4 in 14 Pattern 5: Starts at 18, 4 in 11 Using this method, you only need to pay attention to the starting space and, once you know that, simply count how many times the light moves until you reach the appropriate number.
I don't think he memorized the entire patterns. I think I read somewhere that he always waited for square 2 to light up, then whatever came next alerted him to which pattern was being used .
