Double Headed Castles! 5043 & 7029 storm Hatton Bank - 04/03/2023.

Saturday 4th of March saw the long-anticipated sight of two of Tyseley's GWR 'Castle' Class 4-6-0s double-heading on the mainline become a reality, with 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgecumbe' & 7029 'Clun Castle' being rostered to haul the Vintage Trains "CBS Shareholders Special" from Birmingham Snow Hill - Didcot & return.
I ventured out to Hatton North Junction, near the summit of the 1 in 100 Hatton Bank, to film the two 'Castles' on their travels. 5043 & 7029 are seen roaring up Hatton Bank with the return leg of the trip; truly a stunning sight & sound to behold! - Авто та транспорт

Thank you kindly Nick; aye, the sight & sound of two 'Castle's working flat out was nothing short of spectacular! I'd be inclined to agree on the point of these two with a load of 15 coaches behind, though whether Tyseley could achieve this would, in part at least, depend on whether they've the crucial amount of rolling stock in operational condition. I am, however, led to believe that a double-headed trip with 5043 & 7029 over the South Devon banks to Plymouth might happen later this year...

Thank you kindly for your feedback Luke, I had a feeling you'd be somewhere close by. A quagmire halfway along the footpath myself & others used on the way meant that getting to the location (and walking back from it) was absolutely dreadful; I was, however, amused to see later attendees resorting to jumping the fences of adjacent fields in order to reach our location! Nonetheless, the sight & sound of two 'Castles' storming the 1 in 100 was nothing short of spectacular, so all's well that ends well!

Brian, I really appreciate your feedback on this one, 5043 & 7029 certainly put in a cracking performance; the climb up Hatton was bound to be a special moment for railway preservation! Indeed, the popularity of the location was quite evident by the sheer number of enthusiasts that had gathered both on the footbridge and the adjacent fields; I was one of the first to arrive, so managed to beat most of these crowds. But as you say, I can certainly see why so many flock to that location!

Splendid stuff. Two 4-6-0s against a 1 in 100 gradient. What's not to like?!
Thank you most kindly Ron, I am very much inclined to agree in that regard - the sound of both Castles working flat out was as spectacular as the sight of it was! The Castles are among my favourite locomotive designs, so to see two of them tackling the 1 in 100 up Hatton was absolutely marvellous!
