Landscape Photography | Nothing Comes Easy In The Peak District

- Landscape Photography can be frustrating at the best of times. Images were taken on two separate days and the weather and natural obstacles made taking the photographs I saw in my minds eye, difficult to capture. Lady Bower Reservoir, again was the location of this outing with the Nikon d850. Despite the weather and the difficulty of obtaining a composition I was happy with, I was content with a couple of the images. Nothing comes easy and especially so on these two days.

So glad to see you back in action, Paul. Missed you and your channel.
Adam, Gary and you always inspire me to go out and do more. Each with their own style. And you are just down to earth and I wish I could have the opportunity to go on a shooting day with you.
I will have to visit the UK one day and visit the amazing locations you have there.
Cheers and keep it up. And always enjoy yourself and have festive days with your family.
Black3ternity thanks buddy . If you ever get to the uk I’d be happy to go out with you 😃👍
Looking forward to hearing more about the bike. 😉 👍
It'll feature a lot in future
Love the photoes! Glad your back😊
astrid Horneland thanks Astrid
Nobody does it like you Paul great to see you coming back,
Thanks buddy
great and entertaining vlog paul, stunning images taken in that beautiful location, hope you enjoyed the bike ride
Jim Cooke thanks Jim . The bike ride was mega 😃
Two favourites: that shot of the path in the rain - great colour and texture! - and the, ahem, Giant Baby Hat. My day was brightened by both.
Ha thanks buddy
Holy Moly ... these hat's are sooo brutal ... i fall on my knees and raise my arms to the sky ;-) ... the first two shots are much better than expected under these conditions ... respect Paul !!!
LOL :) . Thanks buddy
Big chuckles from the off and a classic Paul vlog. Loved it buddy and watched both your new ones back to back, Saturday nights are back! 😍👍
Ha thanks Mali. Comments are never the same without you :)
Paul G Johnson 😍 saturdays are not the same without you 👍
Cracking video Paul. Last image is a stunner.
Thanks Alex
You got there in the end mate - great shot and well worth the perseverance :)
Thanks buddy
LOVE.......
Thanks buddy :)
Lovely last image from my neck of the woods 👍
Thanks Nigel
Craicin final shot, well worth the effort ;-)
DennisF252 thanks Dennis
Good to know I am not the only one that gets fixated with a single feature. Good use of the 6-stop Paul. Not sure that tree deserved all the attention but it is a nice autumnal scene with the reflections and colours. I have to say, that rain would have had me down the nearest cafe in search of coffee and cake.
Thanks Steve
Great video and images Paul.
Thanks Jeff. Much appreciated.
Lovely shot, worth the effort.
Thanks Tony
Another nice one. You managed to pull off some stellar images in adverse conditions.
Adrian Whitchelo-Scott thanks Adrian . Much appreciated
Lovely moody shots Paul. Well done. Good to hear you are getting out a bit more :-)
Thank you :)
Fab videos paul. About time too. Love your last reflection image. I can see the problem you had but you nailed it. J
JohnT23174 thanks John 😃👍
Paul, your mad , great stuff.mj
Lol thanks Mark
Really nice images Paul, especially the last one. Perserverence paid off there, and good use of little stopper.
Glad your vlogs are up and running again. Already looking forward to the next one
Thank you David
You sneaky little devil you, U held out to the very end on the capture! Nice hat...
Bill on the Hill... :~)
Ha ha
Final image was lovely , enjoyed listening to your thought process and have to admit i did laugh at your fall, sorry , and you just sat there and carried on lol , really informative, great stuff
Thanks Lee
Sweet final image
Cheers buddy
Lovely photos Paul. :)
Thanks Mark :)
Nice one Paul 👍 weather in the second half of the vlog was much better however in the hat stakes - the first half won hands down !!
Loved the reflection shot (especially when you zoomed out for the whole image 👌superb )
ATB
M
Scotland's Mountains ha thanks buddy 😃👍
Missed you mate, glad to see you back!😊
Cheers buddy :)
I've missed your vlogs so much mate! I learnt so much from your style in the early days and this reminds me of how I want my vlogs to be....raw, informative, a bit of humour splattered with a few nice images for good measure. Chuffed to hear your going to putting out some more stuff too
Thanks Jamie. Lovely comment.
Good to see you back with some well-seen photos. Your woodland processing really enhanced the images. Have a great Christmas & all the best for 2020
Thank you Brian. Same to you pal :)
👍👍
thank you
Glad to see you out and about again, Paul. Looking forward to future adventuring!
Thanks buddy
This shows that good shots can be obtained even in the adverse weather. The texture of the bark was certainly brought out by the rain. Another enjoyable video, thanks Paul.
Thanks Steven. I love trees in the rain.
Great video and the shots were excellent. I visited LadyBower at the end of Oct just before the flooding whilst it was raining heavily it made getting a shot tricky I need to endure the rain more
Thanks David. Very kind. It's a lovely spot isn't it.
Paul G Johnson yes a bit far from Edinburgh but my sister I law is in Matlock so a future visit will take place
Great images Paul and it shows that perseverance in adverse weather conditions can pay off. Please thank your boy for me for letting you out more!
Thanks buddy. Matty says 'no worries' ;)
Hilarious start, nice story and a beautiful shot to finish. How to say that already? Oh yeah! Stunning! Absolutely!
Thanks buddy. Kind comment.
Your patience and planning was rewarded. Great shot that last one.
Thanks Clive :)
Loved the last shot Paul, I will be getting out on my Gravel bike with the camera kit soon. When out training I always come across scenes where I wish I had my camera!! Gravel riding landscape vlogs after Christmas to work off the pudding!!😂👍
Scott Tilley Landscape Photography thanks buddy . Gravel riding is fun but my bones and backside are too old now
@@PaulGJohnsonphotography Your never too old mate ....I'm 51!!! well thats what I keep telling myself😂
Like a bad penny he's back ! nice to see you.
Thanks Paul :)
Another brilliant vid Paul and that reflection shot was stunning. Good that you're back buddy.
Thanks Graham . Most kind
I have one word to say to you Paul......................Umbrella!
Lol . Holding it is an issue when filming. When I'm out on my own I have a nice one :)
@@PaulGJohnsonphotography ooh er missus, lol. You can strap it to your back pack and walk around totally impervious to the rain. Just have to be aware of strong winds, especially when walking along cliff edges, etc, lol.
AoToGo just realised the euphemism in my comment . Great advice , maybe I’ll get one to wear as a hat
Nice 'life as it really is' video. Honest, funny, engaging. Great image too.
Thanks Mike. Warts and all.
I paid off that shot at the end was Killer
Thanks George
It's like watching a typical morning out , I only take in the rain lately. Lovely shots paul
Thanks buddy. Always means a lot coming from you.
As always great Vlog Paul and well done for braving the elements 😁 really pleased we’re seeing more of you 👍
Thanks buddy :)
The images look great... once you're sat in the warm with a mug of tea and a bacon buttie. Been raining here, and blowin' a hoolie for the last four days. I think I'll stick to watching others getting wet.
I like Peter Rennison's idea of 'water colours', considering I used't to describe my old Olympus Trip 35 as taking shots like oil paintings. I've started doing 500mm mirror lens street photography, which look like Rembrandt paintings (chiaroscuro), as there is a sharp falloff of light. Certainly trains your fast focusing skills (its all in the wrist action!).
Great to see you back on form.
Thanks Iain. The 850 without polariser produces that water colour effect with minimal post processing . It's a temperamental camera in the fact that work flow has to be spot on otherwise images come out awfully soft.
Sharpness isn't everything if it looks good. Pin sharp everywhere isn't the way the human eye works; certainly not mine any longer 8-)
Iain Mc I’ve been saying exactly the same thing for ages . Many images these days are pin sharp front back and in my humble opinion it doesn’t look right . Purely subjective of course
The 500mm mirror lens ain't sharp no matter what camera you put it on. Doughnut bokeh and an odd sickle like noise in the out of focus areas, which is 90% of it/10% in focus if you're lucky; looks like paisley pattern, but it looks, to me, absolutely stunning; instant style no post really required. Haven't tried it out on landscape yet, I think you'd need a definite object to shoot in good light (fixed aperture f9), just good composition would look muddy as the depth of field is almost zero.
Hand held, street photography with an f9 ; I don't make it easy on myself!
great vid again the reflections was brill
Thanks buddy.
We miss your vids Paul we hope you are well C&C in Nottingham 👍
This just shows what can be achieved with “water” colours. The rain water certainly brings out the texture of the tree bark Paul.
Thanks Peter :)
Cycled all around Ladybower on a gorgeous, gorgeous autumn day, scouting for potential shots..... There's hundreds. Lovely place. Great video
Paul Collingridge potential everywhere isn’t there . Thanks Paul .
All of the images are beautiful, but the last one is simple stunning. Perhaps one of the best Landscape shots I have ever seen. Well done!
That's very kind. Thank you
Great suff Paul 👌 good to see you back at it 👍 I need all the help I can get 😁
Ha thanks Paul. I'm enjoying your content on insta
@@PaulGJohnsonphotography wow thanks 😮 hopefully I'm improving 🤔
So good to see your vlogs again Paul, love your delivery to camera. Great images, that reflection paid off on the end, cracking Matey.
Cheers Jeff. Very kind buddy.
Great vlog Paul. Loved the way in which you edited the images at the beginning, really captured the mood of the scene. Good to see you are getting back out again
Thanks buddy. Much appreciated
Bob on photo lad - I liked hearing your thought process as you tried to work out what you wanted - very enlightening vid. I love that scummy stuff of froth and small leaves, especially when the water is moving it about - you did a good job given it was still - big thumbs up
Thanks buddy. Lovely comment.
Another great video Paul inspiring me to go out even when the weather isn't at its best..great shot at the end beautiful symmetry.
Thanks Peter
You ended up with a really nice shot Paul - I like it! Lots of fun watching you progressing towards it 😊
David Duffy thanks David . , much appreciated .
Good to see you back at it. I suppose you had to get back to work to support your photography business 😁. You have a great eye for composition nice work. Plus the hat, where the heck did you get it? Not sure I could pull that off, I guess that's why you're there and I'm here watching you.
Dave Jewell thanks buddy . It’s my wife’s hat 👍. Photography isn’t a business for me Dave . I don’t make money from it and whilst my main profession takes up my time I prefer to keep it that way 😃👍
Really enjoyed seeing the contrasting conditions in this video, provided a good insight to your process. I also laughed when you fell and simply continued thinking about the composition form the lower perspective. Looking forward to the biking/photography vlog.
Thanks Adam. It's amazing how a lower perspective can change things. :)
Paul G Johnson Lol. That GoPro stabilisation really smoothed it out too!
First Man Photography 😃😂😂👍
The first part of the vlog is a lot like our normal weather! Got to love the Bike for finding new venues. I see so much more locally than driving around. Love the parting shot, one for the wall methinks. Great vlog and hat Paul.
Cheers
Diz
Thanks buddy. I tried to comment on your comment on last weeks video but it disappeared off the video. I don't know if I deleted it by mistake. I was gutted :)
@@PaulGJohnsonphotography Snotaprob dood ;)
It is always a delight to see you on UA-cam, Paul. Lovely images, even if hard to earn.
Gavin J McGrath thanks Gavin 😃👍
Both shots are lovely. Glad to hear you're going to be about a lot more.
Thanks buddy. Did you miss one, there were three :)
It's highly likely, I'm not great at concentrating on videos whilst checking on my Grandson. 😃 Brian
Brian Launchbury being a grandad is one thing I’m looking forward to when my kids grow up 😃👍
If it's raining I think to myself.... oooo this will look amazing... some great feeling and atmosphere.. so I end up with steamy glasses, and the wrong lens on... too scared to swop out a lens in the rain.... hahaaa.. what a case eghhh... Well done on that last image.... looked great. My favourite was the one shooting up the gradient into the tree line.... dont know how you do it but they always look so wonderful. All the best buddy.. 😎👍
Hi Steve. I know the feeling :)
Nice shot I wish I could compose my images better----Glad to see you back
Thanks Simon. Sometimes it's more luck than judgement ;)
Good to see you again Paul. Love the images but in particular the lake, I think it's the sun hitting the treetops that make it. Also the final edit with the black background as well, you'll have to show us how you did that one day (HINT HINT!!)
Thanks Tim. I'll be doing an editing video soon :)
Here what a todo, do t you just love the British weather. Fab shots Paul hope you dried out 😂
It took a while buddy :)
I bet it did 😂
Nice to see you again Paul. I'm curious to know what gear you carry with you and what bag you use when out on your bike. Really liking that last image across the reservoir.
Thanks Douglas. I actually recorded some footage of what I carry but it got cut. I'll add it into a future video.
Long time no see. You look well, was a nice surprise to see a video from yourself. Summer conditions have been a little bobbins for photgraphy anyway!
Thanks Ryan. I put one out last week too and hope to be a bit more regular :)
@@PaulGJohnsonphotography So you did you slippery bar-steward. Thanks for the heads up 😀
Nothing comes easy is right I recently got up at 5 am to drive to Toronto to get the sunrise it was cold and windy my tripod was vibrating from the wind and when the sun breached the horizon the clouds quickly moved in and the morning sunrise was a dud.
Ontario Hiking Trails can be very frustrating
Lovely informative work as always Paul, as this area is my local shooting spot, living in Sheffield. Sorry the original 'Photo Nerds' trio has split up, just loved it, but the new guy seems good too. I listened to Adam's vlogging with 'you' as guest, just brilliant. Can I ask what software you guys (and Thomas) use to process all the videos and stills into to make the vlog ? Cheers fella, keep up the good work.
Thanks buddy. I use fcpx for vid and LR/PS for stills . Thomas and Adam use premiere for vid and LR/PS for stills
Thanks for the info Paul. I'm ok with LR/PC, However i'll have to get into video work....I'm getting left behind :-) :-) have a gud un …..
Top man he is back that last image was fun to watch you get. Can I ask would it work at all with a little off the left?? So the small tree is closer to the edge of the frame. How far did you cycle haha
The tree wasn't central when I cropped to the left. bike ride was 13 miles i think . Thanks buddy :)
I don't know what you did, but that final image didn't look anything like what you were describing, lovely though. Did you finally find a proper vantage point for taking it?
When I got the images back on the computer , as ingle crop managed to work. The trees on the left were a big concern. It was very tight though.
Please let that be an electric bike :-)
Well spotted ;)
LOL @ the hats (I do miss your old “puffa” tea cozy though). How’s the house coming in mate?
All done pal . Thanks for asking
I often feel inspired when having a nature wee but when I go and get my camera out can’t see an image.
Love that image at 4:20. The sky in the centre isn’t distracting and actually helps pull you in before your eyes start having a little explore around 👀 Nice processing on it too, are you applying a slight Orten effect to it?
Paul Downey thanks paul . Both the woodland ones had a 11% orten applied . Well spotted 😃👍
Paul G Johnson works well on the image mate, I think about 11% is the most I normally go. I seem to go through phases of applying it though but definitely adds that little something to woodland images if there isn’t any mist.
Paul Downey I agree . If it isn’t subtle it’s sometimes too much . If the area doesn’t have conditions then it works well
Paul G Johnson yes definitely, the orton effect requires the ‘go make a brew and some back to test’ 😆 Cheers Paul, look forward to more videos from your outings.
Great vid Paul but I do have problems with the hat. Can you go back to the baseball cap please?
Ha thanks Roger. I will wear it next time , just for you :)
Great image from a bad weather day.
What happened to the Photo Nerds podcast? Not seen one for a while
Thanks buddy. Adam is busy with other projects at the minute
Paul, I wear a baseball cap (Seahawks cap of course! Go Hawks!) daily so if you could speak a bit slower in your videos from now on I would be most appreciative. Thanks.
LOL , I'll try my best :)
I like your hats, only reason I watch, lol apart from your enthusiasm.
Ha thanks Derek :)
Forgot to mention, I think you are a star!
Don't let anyone make fun of you for wearing an Indians hat!! Go Tribe!
:)
Next time take a wet suit ;-)
Could have done with one ;)
Pourquoi nombre de photographes anglophones se parent ils de couvre chef ridicules?. Se donner une identité?
TheMarcao93 I don’t know anyone who wears silly hats other than myself . I just pickup what’s available in the house when leaving . I have two young children , hence the hats . My usual down hat is worn to keep warm. I don’t identify with my hats though . Many thanks for the comment 😃👍
