A long, straight layout, but the track has gentle, sweeping curves. That, to me, is what makes a layout aesthetically pleasing. Hoping to see this in the flesh.
I love the passion and enthusiasm that Pete Waterman has for the hobby. What an amazing layout, just a pity I'm unlikely to get a chance to see it for real!!
It's currently on show at Chester cathedra; but you'd better hurry up as it won't be there for long. Just google Chester Cathedral and go the events link on the website. Tickets are only £2.50
@@andrewhinds6560 Unfortunately I live in Hampshire, so its not very easy to make the visit. Really glad there's some good footage of it on UA-cam though!
Always an absolute pleasure to listen to Pete. Such a passionate and knowledgeable chap and a true ambassador for the hobby. To my mind he is up there with the likes of the late Bob Symes.
The West coast main line, is a fantastic location to model ! The sheer variety of Diesel and electric power, certainly from the 1960's to the 1990's, and probably up to to the present day, has been quite unlike any other electrified railway in the whole of the UK ! This model is absolutely brilliant and captures the atmosphere perfectly. Well done, to everyone involved.
Absolutely stunning. Im from Derby which is definitely a railway town and love how this looks. Thanks to Pete and the gang for giving everyone this stunning layout to enjoy.
Wonderful and awe inspiring, we can only wish and work to the constraints of our budget. Pete is a fantastic ambassador for the hobby, he always comes across as a down to earth working class bloke that was in the right place at the right time. Keep modeling Pete 👏👏👏
Hear! Hear! Pete, I certainly have missed the exhibits with the atmosphere that brings the smiles of enjoyment. What a lovely, well-laid-out rural scene. Brilliant!!! Iain
Definitely be over from Hebden to view this. As Pete says, nothing better than seeing a layout in action, no matter what age you are. This will inspire many. Fabulous idea.
I have bought a small motorhome during lockdown to enable me to go places when the shackles are fully removed. I have just added Chester Cathedral to my list of 'GOTO' places. Thanks Pete. 👍
Spent 1.30 hours with Peter and his friendly team at Chester Cathedral, watching his new layout Arun's catenary was really realistic. Impressed with the signals, Aruns locos made from Judith Edge kits. Modelling in 3mm would be great if we had a similar layout. looking forward to seeing it again at Milton Keynes.
wow that is fantastic ...who gets to keep it when the exhibition is over!! definitley want to see it at some point and pete is so right you just cant beat an exhibition seeing trains run etc hopefully those days will be back, great video..cheers!
i remember 15 year ago i was in the model tent at a steam rally and guess who was next to me it was pete he was just there doing his train thing superb day always remembered.
Pete waterman he's a legend as train fan me self he inspired me to build another layout few years ago when I met him very briefly at peak rail in matlock very nice bloke made my day that year 😀😀😀
Superb, didn’t expect Pete to come out as an AC fan! I used to live by Roade cutting as a kid and this layout evokes that same feel of watching passing trains in the summer. Need some Class 310’s but they’re not available in RTR but I wish they were!
Those bridges (2:11 into the video) remind me of the "blue bridge", on the mainline near Wolverton Works; where I spent my early train spotting years. Ah, the nostalgia!
When Leamington disappeared on You Tube I thought we had seen the last of Mr Waterman and the guys. Thank God you are back Pete, all be it for a brief video.
So pleased to hear Pete Waterman say what I believe too, that enthusiasts want to see trains RUNNING not shunt-stop-fiddle about. My own 1960s steam & early diesel era WCML layout is ‘only’ 14ft long and yes it’s been a huge undertaking. I’ll be off to Chester to compare notes.
Great interview Mike thanks for sharing. Peter Waterman layout is going to be awesome to go and see. Take care Hornby Magazine team and happy modeling.👍
Looks like a fantastic layout, couldn’t agree more with the comment about most of our railways are just open countryside but it’s rarely modelled. Hope I can make it to see this monster layout in the flesh. 👍
Would be fantastic if Hornby magazine can visit this layout at Chester Cathedral to really appreciate the outstanding work these guys have put towards this truly remarkable layout.
Love your passion Pete. Is this a case of "Back to the Future" . My father had a very comprehensive Hornby layout in the mid 1950's and as l child we would go walk to Savages every Saturday morning and buy something new. Never did find out what happened to it , must be worth a small fortune now . Sadly , Chester is too far away . Thanks to all.
A lovely WCML themed layout. Those bridges, tunnel portals and the OLE really capture the feel nicely....and its so LONG! Can't wait to see the "other half" of it develop. I'd love to see this layout hopefully at an exhibition in the future. I just hope its length doesn't make it prohibitively difficult to transport. But then I suppose when you've got money like Pete has, you can afford to do everything big... Interestingly, 64ft is almost the exact same length as a full-scale BR Mk1 coach! Coincidence?
its more like a film set than a train set.nice to see him making something realy nice instead of that dreadful music.well done to pete waterman,a proper train enthusiast.
There's no wonder he's got a layout like that he's got the time and money to do it, and no i'm not jealous just my point of view of it, and yes it is bloody good
Shame the rear bogie of the '85' is derailed at the beginning! I would check this sort of basic thing before filming. Wonderful modelling work, of course.
Wow love it hope he can use DCC and make it super modern(the build and operation side of it ) show kits who use to computers how they can transfer the computer fun to the model railways
Fantastic! my idea of a layout as i have also started a second layout and its a single line along a coast with 2 sidings at a station, end to end layout but might loop it, its based on sandsend in yorkshire (so has cliffs, tunnels, and viaduct) everything had to be scratch build. roll on when we can go to exhibitions.
Come on Pete go Big Four or Pre Group in N gauge! There SECR LNWR MR steam models available and even a GWR railmotor love your layout though brought back memories of BR journeys to Manchester and Liverpool
I returned to OO gauge after in my early teenage years I discovered other pursuits like motorbikes, girls and punk and ska music. It was a shame looking back as my father a BR signalman with his S&T mate built me a brilliant setup which was push panel operated, fully absolute blocked, just had to set the trains path and away it would go and trains following would obey proper rules too with colour signals relayed into points and neutral sections connected to red signals bringing the train to a halt before the signal. I think it was 79 or 80 I featured in the Hornby magazine as being an utter nerd on railways when I was given a tour of the factory in Margate, an excellent day that was and my nerdness was tested too :P The only niggle I have with model rail is the lack of actual realistic running e.g. you set the throttle to gain speed and you use a brake to lose speed and you balance your loco or multiple unit between throttle, freewheel and brake, well that and bogie mounted couplings causing motorway sized gaps between stock but I have come back into the scene with a vengeance and started my current running stock with an ancient GWR Pannier and equally venerable 08 shunter, paid less than a fiver for both and both now look as good or better than factory adding class 86, 73, 37, 33, 9400 Pannier, CR Pug (insanely fast little thing), rebuilt the power cars of a Blue Pullman set and in the process of building up a proper built layout.
I was interested why there was mention of Kettering viaduct yet that's not on the WCML? The wires have only just arrived at Kettering. It did remind me vaguely of Roade cutting where I used to park down next to the lines, which is now sadly all gated and fenced off.
I think, because it is so well spaced out (nothing crammed in unrealistically) the 'OO' tracks look like EM. I think it would be a nightmare converting all that stock to EM!
