    Really cool project! Do you consider 5160 to be the ideal metal for a spear like this? Or do you consider any of the other steels ive seen you work on to be "better"?

    • @CharlesJonesblades
      @CharlesJonesblades  4 роки тому +1

      5160 is a very tough steel so it what I tend to make a lot of swords and rough use blades out of it, and its pretty easy to work with!

    Great lookin spearhead.
    Question for ya. Will the socket now be considered the weak spot because the offset and how it wraps around shaft vs a split shaft and solid tang?
    I've thought about mskin a Spearhead like yours now for yrs but never pulled the trigger so to speak. God Bless

    • @CharlesJonesblades
      @CharlesJonesblades  4 роки тому +2

      The cone shape of the socket makes it very strong, it is much stronger than the shaft that it will get mounted on. The area of the spearhead most prone to possible damage will be the point.

    Pity you didn't show how you did the offset to line up the blade & socket..otherwise nice job..

    • @CharlesJonesblades
      @CharlesJonesblades  4 роки тому +1

      At 7:16 you can see how I did it, I move the socket over the edge of the anvil and gently persuade the socket to be centered with the blade. I did a couple strikes like this to get it just where I wanted it but that is the jist.

    just want to say there wasn't any tempering shown which means that blade could be very brittle and not truly functional

    • @CharlesJonesblades

      It was tempered twice at 450 degrees. I usually dont show any tempering vecause its pretty boring
