    I'm a Digital Media Designer And this is really great advice. Especially if anyone is going the route of a boot camp. I went to college for digital media and they did a great job at getting us ready for the real world with presentations, role play, critique etc. It's hard to walk away with those skills from a boot camp.

      How did you like your digital media major in college? I’m thinking about majoring in digital media since I’m already in college and want to know if it’s good for UX design or other creative careers? Also what other jobs could you get with a digital media degree?
      Plus at my school the digital media major is more graphic design based, is that a good thing?

    I joined a bootcamp (Designlabs) and then withdrew after about 2 months into the 8 month program. Reasons? It was too cookie cutter and I was honestly learning a lot more outside of the bootcamp. Plus my current bachelors program is in UX and I feel that’s more than enough now. Best bet starting out is to read..read…read! Then apply the knowledge you gain into your case studies, network, and then offer to do volunteer work for the experience. Good luck everyone on your journey. 👍🏼

    I think a lot of the imposter syndrome just comes from the fact it’s such a new job. I still get hiring managers that don’t even know what UX even is - don’t sweat it.

    I love the way you film! Everything just seems so effortless and genuine, looks like it takes all day to film though haha

    How are you the oracle I never knew I needed ?! Thank you for all of these huge points -- I'm at the end of week 1 of Designlab's UXA and love the mimi UX real talks. It's a lot more affirming (at the end of the day) to rely primarily on one's own self rather than putting the onus on a bootcamp (though I love Designlab as a whole!)

    Do you think the Udacity nanodegree is as good as designlab? From what you hear/know. Or is the bootcamp better?

    I really appreciate this! I've been a sign designer for 5 years and switching to UIUX design, even starting my first bootcamp on Monday. I was a bit shook seeing your video pop up honestly (following me?) lol I feel more confident hearing these things from you. Thank you so much for this!

    Doesn’t designlab have partnerships that can help you get real world client experience while you’re in the career services?

    • @mimimichi
      @mimimichi  2 роки тому

      You can opt in to be notified about Partnership Projects, where you can get notified about part time or freelance projects with real companies, but it’s up to the student to reach out directly and try to get an interview. I don’t have direct experience with this program so can’t speak with confidence on experience. Great question!

    Something important to remember - EVERYONE gets imposter syndrome. That might help, hopefully.

    I did my research before enrolling. I spoke to a UX designer at my job and my manager suggested that I meet with the product designer who was hired in my position but made a vertical move. I would love to stay within my job or similar because I am already familiar with it but I already feel the imposter syndrome. So far I am really enjoying my bootcamp experience.

    So I know boot camp, got you the job, but I'm curious if you feel boot camps are helping most people land their first job. I'm a veteran that coaches others, but I feel like there still needs to be one more step in the process like doing some free work to land your first job.

    Have you heard of Dribbble’s Jesse Showalters design course? I haven’t heard of him but hear he is a good teacher!

      I know him, and I can tell you his advice for new people to the career is solid. He helps you think along lines that you might not think to address. He's also setting a very good example for people who are established in this career path to help people trying to get in. There is much more work available than workers to do it.

    Which laptop works best for UX? MAC book or any windows laptop?

    • @mimimichi
      @mimimichi  2 роки тому

      Either will get the job done, but I’ve always been given a mac at the companies I’ve worked at as a UX designer and personally use a Mac as well

    Whoo Mimi comin thru with timely content 😍I just started DL's May cohort this week & the crippling anxiety/overwhelmed feeling was already creeping in so I appreciate this honesty to better plan my time during bootcamp! Bootcamps set you up for a lot of collaboration among students during your time there, but sometimes lack emphasis on networking/connecting with those interacting with UX designers for sure. If they don't provide it, you have to seek it out for yourself!

    Do you still recommend the bootcamp you went to vs. the other bootcamps out there?

    • @mimimichi
      @mimimichi  2 роки тому +1

      I do recommend designlabs Bootcamp, but if there is a program out there that can get you real working experience that would be great. I do know those programs can be quite costly though

    I like this channel, and the advice to junior designers is solid. I think an important point to support here is that it's doing the work itself that teaches you how to navigate the politics and deal with some truly frustrating stuff that inevitably comes down the pike. Someone *will* do something that makes you lose sleep, and that moment will come. Probably soon.
    Also, I wonder what the impact would be if I did a companion series of videos like this, but from the POV of someone who has been in design and tech for 22 years. I'm not certain but instead of eating eggs in what appears to be the morning, it might be large pitcher of Bloody Marrys. Depending on how much PM is acting up. Cheers!

    Hi so I'm like new here...
    And I really need some advice with this. I need your help, to like throughly educate me about ux and ui design

  • @noniemousze

    Hello, I am a graphic designer, did took a course for html/css... do you think itll be easy for me to transition to UI/UX??

    • @KevinSpooner
      @KevinSpooner 2 роки тому

      One thing to get straitght is that UI *design* is a sub-component of UX (which also involves research, information architecture, etc). Coding HTML and CSS is typically the domain of a UI engineer, but some smaller companies that might want to combine several jobs into a single one might see this as an advantage. At any rate, knowing more never hurts. You just have to know what you're looking at and know how to position yourself to do what you want to be doing. Good luck!

    Would you recommend Masters degree to get to UX designer field? It’s 11 month intense long program in Master of Human-Computer Interaction and Design at University of Washington? I have no UX/UI designing background I’m from Biochem background and would like to learn more than what Bootcamp offers and have that Masters as backup for jobs that require one. What do you think?

    • @mimimichi
      @mimimichi  2 роки тому +1

      I actually thought about enrolling in that exact program, but I live in California and decided I didn’t want to move and hoped the Bootcamp route would be enough. So I can’t speak to it personally since I didn’t experience it
