- (22 Dec 2017) A white commercial farmer, who was evicted from his farm in Manicaland province in Zimbabwe, returned to the area on Thursday after local community members said they wanted him back.
Robert Smart and his family were welcomed back at their home after community members, local politicians and the country's new government intervened to reverse their forceful eviction by heavily armed Zimbabwean riot police back in June.
The tobacco and maize grower was evicted from the estate near Rusape, about 200 kilometres (125 miles) east of Harare, to reportedly pave way for a top cleric, Trevor Manhanga, who had links with then president Robert Mugabe.
The grabbing of Lesbury Farm came shortly after Mugabe told his supporters at a rally that all remaining white commercial farmers should be kicked off their properties to make way for the ruling Zanu-PF party's youth and his supporters who had no land.
But, according to New Zimbabwe.com, president Mnangagwa's special adviser Chris Mutswangwa said on Tuesday that Smart and his son Darryn should not be disturbed in their farming activities.
"These farmers are Zimbabweans and they belong to Manicaland province," Mutswangwa was quoted as saying, adding that the country now needed direct investments to boost the economy.
Land is a contentious issue in Zimbabwe, where the government of former President Robert Mugabe, starting around 2000, initiated land seizures and evictions of farmers from the country's white minority, which relinquished power in 1980 after a guerrilla war by black nationalists.
Mugabe said the often-violent reform program was meant to redistribute resources to poor blacks, but many prime farms instead ended up in the hands of ruling ZANU-PF party leaders, party loyalists, security chiefs, relatives and cronies.
More recently, the situation was further complicated by rifts within the ruling party that led to the military intervention and the victory of president Emmerson Mnangagwa over a faction linked to Mugabe's wife Grace, who previously had presidential ambitions.
Mnangagwa in his inauguration speech said farmers would be compensated for the seized land but said the program itself would not be reversed.

Now that Mugabe is gone and there is democracy again, the people want the farmers to come back and help them grow food. The people know that only with the farmers they're not going to starve. It was only stupid pig Mugabe who thought he could get rid of them. These white farmers were born in Zimbabwe, their parents were also born there. It was their grandparents who moved to Zimbabwe from South Africa and England between 1890 and 1920. They may be white, but they are 100% Zimbabwean and it was only stupid dictator Mugabe who hated them. Thank God they are now back!
@Pixel SmileWell, farming is very complicated and it takes years to learn proper farming techniques. As I've said, the European farmers had been living on the land for about 100 years, enough time to master the art of farming and learn of to get huge yields. They also helped the local economy a lot, because many native Africans worked in european-run farms and made a lot of money, however they didn't know about all the techniques. There were about 100.000 European farmers in Zimbabwe in 1995, all born there, who's parents had also been born there. As I've already mentioned, they were no less Zimbabwean than the blacks. When Mugabe decided to get rid of them in the year 2000, as soon as he had made the whites flee their land, under threat of murder, he put blacks loyal to his regime in their place, and ordered them to farm. However these native Africans had never studied the art of industrial farming, because they came from either subsistence-farming communities or from cities. These meant that they had no idea how to do the job, and consequently the yields were a lot smaller and people started to starve. There were only about 25000 white farmers left in Zimbabwe in 2015, but thankfully since 2017 the new government has asked them to come back and has started to give them their land back, so hopefully many more farmers will return in the future and Zimbabwe will once again be the rich and prosperous nation in was in the eighties.
@Pixel Smile Well, Mugabe is the man who ordered more money to be printed when inflation rose dramatically in Zimbabwe, which is the stupidest thing you can do. We can't really expect him to do much better regarding farming. Also, by the year 2000, his regime had lost many of its allies (USSR) or its allies were in a state of civil war (Mozambique) meaning that there weren't many places to send anyone to learn. I shall also point out that punishing people for supposed crimes that their grandparents supposedly commited isn't right in any moral thinking.
Farming isnt as easy as urban activists think. A lot of skill goes into planning the planting, care of crops harvest and preparing the land for the next crop. You dont just throw a few seeds out and pick your crop.

Probably worse when it was ones family that helped build up the economy of the place they are driven from.
We had a small company that employed 29 people( all African). When the economy was falling apart we kept the company afloat by selling off properties and other assets just so we could pay our workers until we were left with nothing. I came to Europe with 1500 pounds in my pocket, that was all we had left only to be told time and time again that I was a white racist when people discovered where I was from. My biggest disappointment was having to tell our worker that we could no longer employ them.

Having lived in Sout Africa for 26 years He and his family are being welcomed because he was a leader who knew what needed to be done. When his farm was stolen by Mugabe and given to one of his black cronies, it fell apart and the people who are muh more than employees, they form a happy community. I employed Zulus and was made a member of their community because I brought the prosperity and they all knew that I worked very hard, but the threat was and now is that white childrenwho ger excellent reults in their education will not get jobs under the A N C Govt. and we had a brilliant so, so we left in 1999. All the black people we knew workers and associates begged us not to leave (we are British subject and we returned to Europe) because as they said,"We know what happens when the whites leave"! and it has. The Chinese are moving in but the poor and that means most of them, will be left starving as they are in Zimbabwe.

I'm studying alot into this as to why they've stagnated and rejected help, although understandably some colonialist did screw alot of them. What people don’t realise is that when these farmers were removed from the land , it didn’t just affect them and their family , it also affected hundreds of farm employees . Depending on where the farm is located , some farmers built schools for the children of their staff and they would have lost all of that along with the land and the employment . Such devastation for a small community reliant on the farm for their living , but wonderful for the community now that they’re back
This made me cry, so good to see a farm reopen, you can see how happy the community are to have them back... They will get it back producing desperately needed food in no time.. the works will have jobs/money. There families food schools /doctors... It's a joy to see...
