  • Twenty years after Zimbabwe’s controversial land reform policy, when thousands of white farmers were forcibly evicted, some are returning to the land as tenants of Black owners.
    As Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa reports from Mashonaland East province, the government hopes their return will boost production amid warnings that millions of Zimbabweans are facing food shortages.

      You misunderstand, the Zimbabwe leadership didn't care about productivity of the land. They gave it to anyone honestly and their friends. They just wanted to take it away from the white minority pretty destroying their networth advantage in zimbabwe. South Africa is doing the same.

    ...meanwhile, neighbouring countries who gave land and sanctuary to the exiled white farmers, are now reaping the benefits of high food production, good employment for locals and a thriving economy. The new Zimbabwe government have tried to entice the farmers back, but most have decided to stay in their new countries. This is what happens when you break a trust.

      @superior melanin Black farmers had 20,000 years to produce business's and products like that which the white European farmer brought to them. It takes vision, ambition, drive, and knowledge to achieve those things, and as we saw in Zimbabwe, once you take away the people with those qualities, it all fails. Your argument is invalid anyway, because the great European cities and cultures were all built with white working class slaves (serfs) for thousands of years, long before they ever got to Africa. It's called exploitation of local labour, and it didn't matter what color that labour was. But the end result speaks for itself. Farms that were taken off the white farmer invariably failed. I don't claim any "racist" factors in that statement, it is simply a statement of truth.

    • @thewatchman6074

      Why is my argument invalid? I fully agree Europe was built on white serfdom, and still is, but what has that got to do with the current situation in Zimbabwe?

The British observed that from Mali to Somalia, everyone knew what a wheel was and in their extensive civilizations it was made over and over again but you aren't gonna ride a wheel on a sand dune or in the dense forest are you? And how does not having a wheel equate to being in the stone age? Stone age means using stone tools. Africa was among the first places to walk out of the stone age. Or you don't even know this judging from your weak and uninformed assertions... And what exactly are you suggesting? The government snatched the land for its cronies and not the people who could farm. @westmax8491 3 роки тому +2

      That land was never paid for. You have to understand how whites got land in Zimbabwe. This topic is not simplistic as we try to make it. This problem mostly exists in the British African colonies where they intended to settle permanently and through that, natives were kicked off their lands. I noticed the opinions on this topic on Rhodesia and Zimbabwe varies subjectively on race. Most white conservatives think the white zimbabweans were rightful land owners. Most blacks especially natives believe taking land away from white zimbabweans is justice for them considering that for some, their parents and grandparents were forcefully removed and their livestocks were slaughtered when British settlers were seeking to expand and gain more land. The best thing is Britain should have honored their promise where they were to compensate land by purchasing it for the white zimbabweans but Prime Minister Tony Blair reneged that deal which made Mugabe uncompromising.
      Would it be ok some non-Europeans go to Switzerland and make the alps for their taking and kicking out all Swiss people living in the alps, mind you the alps has been ancestral home for the Swiss people? Wouldn't you be happy if the Swiss people eventually fought and took back what was rightfully theirs from those who took the alps from them? Why is it seen as evil when black Zimbabweans take what has been their ancestral lands? There is a difference between purchase and grabbing. Had those white British settlers bought land from the black Zimbabweans, then it would be atrocious to kick the white zimbabweans off their lands.

    • @Daniel-qu2kh
      @Daniel-qu2kh 3 роки тому

      @@westmax8491 yes west max this is a more balanced view. I would add that some land was unihabited in the modern sense whilst some was seized. Also the white people did cultivate land that sometimes was not so good actually.
      Some European settlers came up from SA into scarce areas whilst cecil Rhodes did seem to forcefully take land.
      Secondly, later European settlers bought (paid) for land under the Rhodesian government and later through the Mugabe government.
      Problem is one change of gov in Africa, and property rights can be dissolved sometimes to give benifts to political parties supporters. See the protests in SA over Zuma as an example.
      I do believe that as Africa moves away from liberation political parties, middle ground parties will emerge. liberation, sometimes violent scarring those involved (similar to guerilla Vietnam war) and running a country are two different beasts.
