Chris Barrie isn't wrong. They were the best as my Grandfather J.Luty would often relate when I was just a boy over 60 years ago. He had the great privelege of being a Top-link crewman (Fireman) on these superb engines in the 1930's for LNER. He and Driver Arthur Taylor set a record run in 1935 with the A4 Pacific Silver Link, pulling the Silver Jubilee train at 112.5 MPH on its' inaugural run. Of course the record moved from them to LMS and back and to Germany until the Mallard topped 126 MPH.
My first Hornby engine was a model of A4 Silver Link, and since childhood I have idolised the A4, and Mallards record will never be beaten. Truly the king of Locomotives.
Una maravilla de la ingeniería tecnológica. Fantástica locomotora de vapor que alcanza velocidades mayores a las de sus contrapartes de combustión a gasóleo. Súper Stephenson, sencillamente. 😊👍🏻

@@jeremiahlewis9296 Most famous, certainly, but best? I would say in the interest of being diplomatic that that would be largely a matter of opinion. Perfectly okay to have a personal favorite, however.
+Arthur Melez Well, Mallard is currently on static display at the NRM in York for the foreseeable future (the superheater's knackered among other issues, and there isn't any money available in the budget to fix her yet), so they had to use an A4 that was still operable for this segment to show how the A4's look when they are run. Bittern was available, so they chose her.
The NRM are restoring the Sir Nigel Gresley (which appears in one of my videos). Maybe they'll do Mallard next. The experience from Sir Nige will stand them in good stead if they do restore Mallard. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the speed record.
Yeah they look good. In fact they are probably my favorite American designs. But it could just be that it’s really refreshing to see an American engine that isn’t just black and grey. Also the front of the engine looks a bit ugly(Not to much just a bit) in my opinion. The A4s look great from every angle.
Hah. Scotsman is overrated as hell. The A4 is an A3 chassis with streamlined casing - The A4 is equal to/great than the A3. Also, Flying Scotsman wasn't even the fastest of the A3s - Papyrus was.
Fair enough I do like both but the a3 is the classic loco that everyone thinks of when it comes to the 1920s and the a4 is when you think steam at speed so they both are as good as each other
I like A4s an much as the next guy but they are not the best steam engines built they wouldn’t even be on the top 10 it would be number 2 for best looking engine but its not the best designed
Going to go ahead and start a British vs American flame war, your American trains are weird, sure they may be bigger and more powerful, but boi they're ugly.. So many pipes, too big, and no footplate. Your steam locomotives aren't engines, their just oversized boilers on wheels too small and a Firebox that looks like dragged along nappies!
A funny, and odd looking thing, with too many pistons and a nose that looks like a Hammerhead shark, slick in design, but still missing the charm us British steam locomotives have!
John Whitesell Again an interesting design, but fails to meet the charm of the British Steam locos. The slick streamlined design is good, but quite basic, as all that has been streamlined is the front of the locomotive, other parts aren't as well covered. Unlike Gresleys A4's seen in this video. The closest British steam engine I can think of that reminds me of American locos are the 9F's. I'm not too keen on their design as the boiler sits very high above the chassis and pistons making it look like a giant. However its Footplate and consistent cemetrical shape throughout is much different to Exhibit B.
A real shame that only one is working today, and only five others are preserved. Imagine seeing these things in their heyday
What a dream it would be to see this in action with my own eyes.
what a beautiful steam engine.she is a work of genius and a work of art.
As an American rail fan I certainly think that the A4 pacific is my favorite British steam locomotive ever

This is Spencer the silver engine from Thomas the tank engine and friends.
