I live in the area where Jester Hairston was born and raised. Belews Creek, NC. I worked in the office of a local hospital and got to know a gentleman named Tim Hairston. Yes, he was a descendant of the Hairston family. My mother had a set of 45rpm records recorded by Jester Hairston. I gave them to Tim as he was of the Hairston Family. He loaned me a book written about the Hairston Family heritage. Yes, some of the story was full of sorrow, but I also saw a story of people who became strong and survived.
I just loved this man. When in high school 1958-60 I met him at the summer camp in Stockton, Ca. Called then the "College of the Pacific" now UOP, it was a 5 week music camp where we would practice Mon-Sat and sing a concert on Sunday each of the 5 weeks + plus put on a full Opera at the conclusion of the camp. He was a guest choir leader at the camp. He loved high school kids. We had curfews at night and had to be in our room at a certain time, but he would sneak in and tell us stories and sing and teach us little ditties that he wrote. I told him I wanted to be a white kid in his choir - he would laugh and say "Come on down and join". I have such fond memories of this wonderful man.
This guy was hillarious. The "Have Mercy" part cracked me up because that was his famous line from the sitcom "Amen." He used to say, "Oooooh have mercy."
Oh my goodness!!!! So much more than music happening here! The faith and praise of the elder being shown to, passed to, and accepted by the younger. The racial and religious divides being healed. The love! The love!
Soloist is Dr. Louren Plant, music professor at Rowan University, New Jersey. I was in the choir, 2nd row, as a freshman at Rowan. Our choir was invited out to Salt lake City to sing with Jester and the Tabernacle choir.... Jester was 93 years old in this clip !!!!!
Fantastic! Jester was an outstanding musician. I really enjoyed all the clips I was blessed to see him showcase his talent. Bravo to him and his fabulous career.
This was the first song I memorized and I was 1.5 years old! My parents took the family to a drive in movie and we saw “Lillie’s of the field”. My friends never knew what song I was singing back then.
Yes he was just looking at them and how he went about his life that is amazing he loved the song Amen and he was in the show amen Odessa testimony in itself yes he is a legend and his legacy live on and you will be missed amen
I loved Dr. Hairston, I was first introduced to him in high school in the summer I believe June 1972,at Va. State Music Camp,I thought he was amazing!!! He was fantastic!!! He told us about being in the movie "Lady Sings The Blues ",I still think today that he was amazing!!!! He was very friendly!!
This Rendition of Amen was a Testament to Mr. Jesters Many Talents. I have Never Appreciated the Negro Spiritual as Much as I have during this Performance. Because of this Beautiful Music Lesson. I have a Greater Love and Reverence for the Song: AMEN 🙏🏻. Thank You Mr. Jester. ❤️❤️❤️
Trying this again…this was an unforgettable experience. One that I am so thankful to have had! My heart breaks seeing those again here who have left us. 🙏🏻
Yes he was a good man to everybody and his legacy will live on and from the looks of it he love the song Amen he was in the show amen and ever since that song came out everybody love that song he was a legend in his own right and he will be missed rest in peace Amen to you God bless you
I adore the younger man grinning so happy to be with our elder here. What a joy to see. My favorite part of my favorite movie is sung by Jester Hairston. What a lovely man.
I listened to this song, while watching the setting sun. It felt so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes as I sit in awe. Absolute awe of the creations around us
I wish Sister Gladys Knight was there. ❤️ I saw Lilly’s of The Field for the first time several months ago, it was Jester Harrison dubbing for Sydney Poitier. Very uplifting, and as a member, very happy to see the at the LDS Tabernacle. Amen! 🙏🏼❤️
I watched an old Johnny Carson rerun last night that featured Mr. Jaster and he seem like a fine man. I really enjoyed the interview. That’s what brought me hear.
I didn't know he was really a deacon....I thought that was just his character on "Amen". I was really young when the show aired but I remember Jester aka Rolly was the funniest person on the show.
Please Everyone hear the gospel message! Jesus is our only hope for freedom and Salvation! Ray Comfort has FREE movies and interviews on UA-cam with the gospel message!
i am a member of the mormon church and i love the tabernacle choir but i must say the man is right in this case " white man know about music but they don't know about rhythm!!! that song needs a bit fire under the behind and not be sang like a catholic mass!!!!! :-)
Little known fact: Comedian Freddy Lewis was in attendance for this performance. He was thrown out because he held up a giant sign that said, “Where’s Sherman?” xoxo The Clarences
That's a true story. I was Lewis's chauffeur that day. I no sooner dropped him off at church and suddenly he was getting forcibly pushed back into my 1980 Lincoln Continental.
@@THECLARENCES I haven't chauffeured anyone in years. However, I'd be honored to drive The Clarences to LewisFest '24 ...as long as we get to listen to your eponymous debut album on 8-track while I drive in The H.O.V. Lane to 'Frisco.
He’s also wrote and sang the song in “Lilies of the Field.” His voice was overdubbed for Sidney Poitier who, though an excellent actor, had no ear for music.
