From a time when it was impossible for a black man to get respect and dignity in film, Sidney Poitier was a true American treasure. Probably the most underrated great actor.
How is Sydney Poitier underrated? He won a Acadamy Award early in his career for "Lillies of the Fields" in 64, was in MANY films in the late 50s,60s and 70s and whenever I read about him I read how people say he's a Great actor!! How is that "underrated"?? That word is so overused it's funny!

I read this book in English class when I was a freshman in high school, and we watched the movie. I thought of it again, 30 years later, when we sang this version of "Amen" in church.
Born almost 20 years after this movie was made. They don't make them like this anymore. What a perfect ending. I love how he just slips away, he does not want a pat on the back or anything.
I love the look on Mother Maria's face when it finally hits her Homer has left, while all the OTHER SISTERS are so involved singing they don't realize. I love how the camera keeps switching to show Homer continuing to sing as leaves and Mother MARY'S Face.SIMPLY Beautiful..

Only movie ending that tears me up. I’m not sure why. Just strikes a cord. The chapel finally built and it’s time to move on to wherever God needs him. Mother Superior too proud to admit it but she’s heartbroken he’s leaving and he doesn’t want credit. Sneaks out after singing the hymn and drives off into the night while the bell rings then the movies closes with the words “amen”. Perfect movie.
The only part I wished they added at the end was showing the painting done by one of the sisters. They hung a picture of St. Benedict the Moor in the church. He was a black Saint known for his charity. It was an homage to their "saint" Homer.
I`m an old fart and they use to play this movie to us kids in the gymnasium when I was in the 1st and 2nd grades in the 1960`s and I remember distinctly not once ever thinking it was a black guy around white nuns but thinking how nice he was as a man to do all those things for those nuns. I saw this movie when I was eight in 63. Born and raised in Tucson and no one knew where the location of the chapel and ranch house was located. Seen the movie many times and tried to figure it out by looking at the Catalina mountains in the background. It was a very low budget movie and was overshadowed by the pilot of the Fugitive being shot at the same time. Just met a man who worked for the Santa Rita hotel in downtown Tucson where the cast and crew stayed.he knew the location and I've been there even though the chapel was torn down after filming. It is less than a mile from my house near the intersection of cloud and sabino. Walked by it many a time with my dog and never knew it was so close. What a treasure of a movie.
My mother loved this movie so much. Someone posted that Mr. Poitier was tone deaf and someone else actually sung the "Amen" song in the "Lillies of the field" movie. Well, I bet he's singing with perfect pitch in Heaven! Blessings and prayers to his family🙏🤗🙏

My late Mom was German and a devoted Catholic, like Mother Superior, It was God Working through you , Not you. She would have been just as happy being a Nun doing God's work. The Germans in their Kansas county spoke German instead of English. Most spoke English too , it was hard on the kids when they went to School because English was their second Language. We watched this movie many times as kids. Where she came from in Kansas the German Catholics built an unbelievable High School, still today the School is the Best with solid community support. Amen
I love this movie! What a beautiful film. I only wish modern movies could be like this, but the modern film industry knows nothing about the traditional values that made America great in our past. Parents should have their kids watch these kinds of films when they're young.
You're a fool. Traditional values had nothing to do with "atrocities" you speak of. Many other countries not just America share similar "traditional" values and we didn't go on killing others for it. Fool.
Mrreciprocat I think you need to watch more Sidney Poitier movies. They show good traditional values, one of which is the inherent dignity of all people.
I always loved Sidney Portier ! He was amazing in all his movies. I met him in NYC back in 1969. He was so friendly and I enjoyed every moment of our conversation.
Easy to miss: There is significance to be found in the fact that in the very last shot we see of Mother Maria she SAYS (not sings) "Amen". It is a statement of acceptance of what she knows is happening beyond the door.
When I'm at work and someone says something nice and hopeful, I always reply with a hearty, "Amen amen amen!" Sue me. This is a GREAT movie. During "these difficult times" :( this should be on all the movie stations.
Rip Sidney Poitier when I'm down this scene really lifts me up I cannot tell you how Many times this scene has helped me thru some rough times. Rest well my friend..
My eldest sister took me to see this movie when I was in 1st grade when it first premiered. It has always had a special place in my childhood and my heart! AMEN!!
This movie is fucking magical. I watched it when I was in middle school for the first time and this was one of the first movies that made me appreciate what cinema can do
This scene, quite at the beginning of his career, sums up the charisma and the significance he had in almost all of his roles: he vividly embodies all good things can be find in humanity, he's the positive, vibrant, warm and cool, tender and firm, generous and fierce, gentle, humble, bright and loving human we all wish to be, and to meet. It's basically impossible not to love Sidney: and he precisely ends up being loved in all of his movies, and winning through love, and for its realization. Bless him❤
I watched this once when I was a kid but I still remember the movie clearly, especially the ending. Its one of those films that just sticks with you forever.
Should we say ''AMEN'' at the end of our PRAYERS, or use it as an expletive? AMEN is an Egyptian false god, "the creator deity par excellence'', ''the hidden one", "the coiled serpent''. Who really is hidden behind the term "the coiled serpent"? The "coiled serpent" is also hidden in the name AMEN-RA. RA is the EGYPTIAN SUN GOD. Amen is pictured as the "coiled serpent" - he is coiled around the sun. Amen is said to become "visible" to his children when the sun rose in the morning. This dual entity then becomes known as Amen-Ra. This entity AMEN RA is also pictured over the heads of Egyptian pharaohs, also between the horns of a calf. The god "Amen" came out of Egypt with the Israelites and the "vast mixed company" during the Exodus. If you have the movie, "The 10 Commandments" you will see Amen-Ra (the sun with the coiled serpent) between the horns of the golden calf - that Aaron, etc. fashioned. So even the writers and directors of The 10 Commandments inform us that Amen-Ra was worshiped at the time the Israelites came out of Egypt through the Red Sea. Thus, the warning to the children of Israel, and OUR WARNING, as given in Exodus 23:13, "And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth." KJV. The "vast mixed company" of Egyptians, in praying to their god, Amen would have used that name at the beginning of their prayers and at the end. Their gods should have been discarded, they were not. The Egyptian god AMEN is indeed hidden. He is hidden in our prayers, and in our expletives. Further, his name has been erroneously inserted in the Bible. Please note: In the Greek Scriptures, about one-half of the approximately 50 "King James" instances of the use of the word "AMEN" have been removed from new Bibles - Bible scholars know they are spurious. The oldest manuscripts that we have do not use the word "Amen" in the instances where they have been removed. The most spurious, the most outrageous of these instances is the use of the words in the Lord's prayer, "For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen." (Matthew 6:9, 10, as found in the King James Version.) This sentence, with its concluding "Amen" is a spurious addition, and it has been removed from new Bibles. And one has to ask, if we had the first century manuscripts, the ones that the apostles wrote with their own hands, would any of their manuscripts include that word? Our Almighty Heavenly Father does not approve. The NIV in Exodus 23:13 states our warning this way, "Be careful to do everything I have said to you. Do not invoke the names of other gods, do not let them be heard on your lips." Now that you know about this - Do you want to take the chance of displeasing our heavenly father and his son? Much more information about the ancient god "Amen" and its usage today is found at Brenner Poetry Plus. Please visit.
@@joyedetbrenner1446 Historical records do indicate that the ancient Egyptians had, among their many gods, a god called Amen (the presumed personification of air or breath, represented by a ram or goose). However, no evidence can be found, linking the word amen(Hebrew: “truth”, “so be it”) to this, or any other, pagan god. The fact that the Bible’s writers were inspired to use the Hebrew word often certainly validates its correctness. What is the Bible’s definition of this word? Read Revelation 3:14. Here, Christ is referred to as “the Amen, the faithful and true witness.” It is used here in direct relation to the terms true and faithful, and emphasizes Christ and His message, the embodiment of TRUTH (John 14:6; 17:17). These verses conclusively show the word’s scriptural meaning. If we base our use of the word on the Hebrew meaning, then it is not a sin to use it. However, if we attribute life and power to some pagan god as we use it, then we are using it improperly and not in the same manner as did the writers of the Bible. As the Apostle Paul stated, in Romans 14:23, “…whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” - rcg.org/questions/p028.a.html
My favorite scene from this movie is toward the end when the Catholic priest of this area (who was losing his faith thinking God cursed him to the desert) walks into the new chapel, looks around, gets on his knees at the alter and prays "Now I understand. Now I know why you put me here". Lot of powerful messages in this film (and I despise using Hollywood analogy) about what we can bring to wherever we find ourselves on this earth.... rather than what we can take.
Have very fond remembrances of watching this beautiful movie with my mom when I was a little boy. It always seemed to air around Easter time. And what a beautiful man Sidney Poitier was. R.I.P.

I always watch this movie around Easter time. I absolutely love this song! One of my all time favorites! How can one not feel uplifted and full of joy after listening to this? AMEN!
So many different levels of humanity exhibited in this film that without sex, violence and swearing, as I remember it, throughout the entire film, this should be shown more often to much younger audiences to set a standard of basic goodness that everyone should strive to achieve through life. It’s A Wonderful Life is another example of forgotten standards of how life should be lived in a more ideal world.

I watched this days after the lovely Sidney Poitier died the end scene of amen gets me in tears now
I saw this movie yesterday and all through I was singing the song. I loved it so much that I had to find this song. Jesus is the only thing that bring the world together. Jesus reigns For ever. God bless us all. Amen
Amen!!!🙏🏾❣
Poitier came to the U.S. with nothing, and ended up with an Oscar.
And a golden globe award and was knighted by queen Elizabeth the 2nd and got awarded the highest civilian honor by Barack Obama and served in the U.S. army starred in and directed movies and more. He has accomplished alot in his lifetime. He's an amazing man.
@@malconnv Just Poitier now.
He said when he came over here he made up his mind to never do anything that would bring shame to his father. I have a great deal of respect for him for that, and he was a great actor too.
He is an American citizen who was in Miami, FL. LOVE HIM!!!!
Actually, I would say he came with nothing . He was born on U.S soil therefore he already obtained automatic citizenship by birth. Retuning at 15 yr old teenager was the best decision he ever made . And a productive youth made him fantastic!
I've never been star struck---but Mr. Poitier was one I really wished I could have met. Made me prouder to be me. A life well lived, sir. 2022.
I say Bravo! he was fabulous in this movie and well deserved of the award.
Yes he was
Yes
My late Mom was German and a devoted Catholic, like Mother Superior, It was God Working through you , Not you. She would have been just as happy being a Nun doing God's work. The Germans in their Kansas county spoke German instead of English. Most spoke English too , it was hard on the kids when they went to School because English was their second Language. We watched this movie many times as kids. Where she came from in Kansas the German Catholics built an unbelievable High School, still today the School is the Best with solid community support. Amen
Fun fact: Sydney Poitier was tone deaf! Jester Harrison dubbed his singing voice! Phenomenal work by both men.
Edit: RIP Mr. Poitier
Beautiful ❤
Yeah well Jester also wrote the song so....
Cassandra Morrison I know..... your point......
@Amanoel Mirza he can’t hear certain frequencies.
Acting!!
I love this movie! What a beautiful film. I only wish modern movies could be like this, but the modern film industry knows nothing about the traditional values that made America great in our past. Parents should have their kids watch these kinds of films when they're young.
Kids are now more interested in what the kardashians are doing.
Bestivitiness I like your profile picture of the president.
Christian Black --- Amen!
Amen and amen 🙏🏼🙏🏼.May he rest in peace ☮️🕊️.One of the greatest actors and a human being who made a way for others.🙏🏼
Me too … I was 4 or 5 yrs old when I saw this Powerful. Tore a hole in my heart Still does. RIP Sidney “Hallelujah”. Trumpet wipes me out
When I'm at work and someone says something nice and hopeful, I always reply with a hearty, "Amen amen amen!" Sue me. This is a GREAT movie. During "these difficult times" :( this should be on all the movie stations.
Sydney Poitier And Gregory Peck always had great dignity on the screen no matter what parts they played, you knew you were watching class
Rip Sidney Poitier when I'm down this scene really lifts me up I cannot tell you how Many times this scene has helped me thru some rough times. Rest well my friend..
Me as well!!
The sitcom Amen brought me here. I absolutely love Sidney Poitier ❤❤❤ My favorite with him is Guess Who's Coming To Dinner 💕💕💕💕
Love this movie, love the song, love Sidney Poitier. One of our finest actors.
My eldest sister took me to see this movie when I was in 1st grade when it first premiered.
It has always had a special place in my childhood and my heart! AMEN!!
Rest in peace, may your memory be a blessing. And thank you, Sir, for the wonderful acting you shared with us all.
This movie is fucking magical. I watched it when I was in middle school for the first time and this was one of the first movies that made me appreciate what cinema can do
We lost another great one yesterday (1-6-22). This is one of my favorite movies. May you RIP Mr. Poitier.
Bless him❤
I watched this with my children years ago and when it went off they begged to watch it again 🙏🏾 Amen
One of the best films ever....and what an incredible song of triumph. Alleluia.
I watched this once when I was a kid but I still remember the movie clearly, especially the ending. Its one of those films that just sticks with you forever.
Sidney Poitier was absolutely SCRUMPTIOUS!😍🥰
After almost 50 years, this scene still gives me goosebumps. If it does the same to you, say 'Amen'.
tears. Amen.
Amen
Amen✌️
I remember watching this with my parents as a small child in the 70's. Great memories! Amen!

best movie ever
Amen
IS A GREAT ACTOR.
Cecil Blount Yes sir he is ❤
Should we say ''AMEN'' at the end of our PRAYERS, or use it as an expletive?
Do not invoke the names of other gods, do not let them be heard on your lips."
Now that you know about this - Do you want to take the chance of displeasing our heavenly father and his son?

Historical records do indicate that the ancient Egyptians had, among their many gods, a god called Amen (the presumed personification of air or breath, represented by a ram or goose).
This is the last thing I played for my grandfather as he died at home in bed on hospice. It was like his spirit left as Sidney left.
My favorite Sydney Poitier movie, rest in peace, King 😔🤲
Wonerful
Rest in peace Mr Poitier. As much as the Beatles are, you too are part of the soundtrack of my life.
I cried when he left as soon as he walked out the door.......i just sobbed!!!!
Have very fond remembrances of watching this beautiful movie with my mom when I was a little boy. It always seemed to air around Easter time. And what a beautiful man Sidney Poitier was. R.I.P.
Rest in peace, Sidney. You'll never be forgotten!
This doesn't get any better...Very up lifting..Sing it Sidney..
It is a wonderful movie! No one cried, no one died! Just hope, love, and and great finish! AMEN!
This is so chilling at the end when the bell sounds. God bless you so much for posting this entire movie.
I saw this wonderful movie as a pre -teen when it first came out in 1963, and I just loved it, as I did all his films ! I'm FINALLY getting a copy of it on DVD - can't WAIT to enjoy this beautiful, gem of a movie again, and again - AMEN ! :)
And RIP, Sidney. Gone, but never forgotten, by this old movie fan of yours. :)
One of those movies that stays with you you entire life.
This film I remember from childhood and now after around 45 years I see this supricely and hear this song that I remember so well....this brings back so many memories about my parents since they were alive 35 years ago. This film has something very special and Sidney Pointer is outstanding memorable in it.
Respect for him and this film.
"HE built The Chapel."
"Amen."
No, he built a "shapel" 😁
Amen
Amén.
Amen
One of my favorite movies of all time
RIP Mr. Poitier. One of the greatest actors to ever live in my opinion
I remember watching this master piece during the 1960s and it still resounds mightily now as it did then.
Because she witnessed a miracle and his mission completed.
Watched this movie in religion vlass for gun, and is one of my favorite Catholic movies I've ever seen. Such a beautiful story and an emotional ending.
My mom showed me this song, and I keep coming back to it, I love it so much! I just recently watched the movie, and it was amazing, I loved it!
Love this movie of him... Just singing it with my son. Greatly miss Mr. Poitier my favorite. ❣️❣️❣️🥰🥰🥺🥺🥺🥺

💗Amen!
Wynym Ware ; Hallelujah!
I am also an unbeliever (in any religion) but I have always believed in goodness and kindness and love. This story embodies these beliefs in the best way ever. I am grateful for the opportunity to view it once more!
@@donaburns7912 well said Donna. A person doesn’t have to believe in any religion to appreciate the message in this wonderful film
May you rest in peace, Sidney Poitier. You were a brilliant actor.
Amen to that from Ernie
Nothing will ever be the way it was Good times
She realizes that he is leaving, going home. It's the last scene.
It makes me sad. I thought was not the end scene, ‘cuz I was hoping he’ll come back to build the school et hospital 🏥
This was broadcasted every Easter in the 60s so my family watched it every year together. It has held up well and remains a classic. RIP, Mr.Poitier!
Considering I'm such a huge movie buff...I don't know how it is that I never saw this one before today. I think this may be my favorite of all time~
It SPEAKS TO YOU
I saw this movie when I was 5 years old at the Kips Bay Movie Theater in NYC. It resonated with my 5 year old self like nothing ever has since.
One of the greatest endings in a movie I have ever seen !!! A masterpiece did on a shoestring budget and it is still a wonderful film.
My 3rd grade teacher showed us this movie, I didn’t cry when I watched it at school but now it hits me with a train of emotions at the end, amen 🙏
R.I.P Sidney Poitier. You are now among the angels in heaven.
I don’t remember when I first listened to this but ever since the first time I heard it…. I couldn’t stop singing it…. RIP Sidney Poitier 🙏🏾
legendary classic🙏🏾✨brings tears to my eyes such heartfelt rejoicing of the Lord.
I consider myself a cinemaphile and am no stranger to Poitier's work. However, this particular film had eluded me for most of my life. I had been scrolling through movies on my streamer and my mother pointed it out with reverence. So we sat, had our lunch and watched to her delight and to mine. It is a must watch for movie aficionados. This particular scene, while seemingly a playful denouement, remains extremely powerful. Especially to those of faith. Thank you, mom, and thank you, Sidney.
