Klingon Academy is next, stay tuned! Note: I realised as I finished editing this I didn't comment on the Skirmish mode. I never tried it in this playthrough but its a fairly straightforward thing, pick a bunch of ships on each side and fight! Its possible in this mode wandering about to various territories could trigger random combat encounters, but I don't know for certain.
Congratulations both on your playthrough AND successfully transitioning from 'that guy who talks about TIE Fighter' into 'that guy who talks about sci-fi stuff'. This opens up so many opportunities for you in the future! Looking forward to Klingon Academy, and hopefully Generations/Future's Past/Elite Force at some point too!
Thanks for the LP and review, done very well as always. One thing to note with how new the green screen tech at the time was, is you'll see the camera never moves in shot, it cuts to another angle as the green screen elements can't hold should the camera move. Wing Commander IV was the first game to overcome that limitation for it's FMVs. Looking forward to checking out Klingon Academy, this slipped me by back in the day, so going into it blind. I would say on any GFX mods, could demo them either after finishing the campaign in a bonus video, or have them and any other cool mods you'd suggest as part of your review video.
4:16 Chekov got more to do in TWOK, TSFS, and TVH than most of the rest of the cast did. He got an entire subplot in both TWOK and TVH. Compared to Sulu and Uhura who basically said "yes sir, no sir" for most of TWOK.
Totally agree this game had some charm but really saved by the fmv parts. Also, you should totally add Star Trek Resurgence to your list of games to play on here. The story and game is pure Trek goodness Port side shields are critical!
This was my favourite game when I was a kid. I had the whole game in 5 cds and the cover art was incredibly cool. During covid I decided to give it another shot. I knew it wouldn't have aged well but I did it mainly for nostalgia. Fun fact, during those times I also discovered you could actually mod the game, I even found a guy who modded a Defiant class ship in it (I lost the link and I can't rememeber for the life of me who the guy was. I'm still occasionally looking around) I tried to mod the ships in the game to play more like the ones in Klingon Academy. I wanted to do a full rebalance but I couldn't figure out how to increase the number of phaser strips and torpedoes. I could make them reload faster, but that broke the balance of the game. I ended up just changing the colors of the phasers and enabled the Mclanti ship in the Skirmish mode.
I grew up with the somewhat butchered (but to be honest given the limitations of the hardware it's pretty impressive) SNES version of the game, so no FMV cutscenes for me and it's almost wholly responsible for deepening my love for ToS, which previously I enjoyed but saw it more as a novelty. After having played it a fair amount, most notably the recreations of the ToS movies missions, I wanted to watch them all. And I found them all to be great, fantastic in certain cases (yes, even the "bad" ones, which I found had a charm all of their own). So while the game may not be the absolute best ever made it holds a special place in my heart, being almost exclusively responsible for my going from a casual enjoyer of TNG, to an actual Trek fan. I have the Gog version, but I have yet had proper time to get into it, primarily because I am, at almost the age of forty, going to be traveling to the other side of the world and enrolling in university. This all coming together after almost twenty years spent as my disabled Mum's (who suffers from MS) full time carer. So as you can imagine, things are somewhat busy for me. However when I am all settled in and my pc has been shipped over to me and I am in a lull period of my educational endevours I am certain to be giving it a spin. My apologies for the long winded comment, and thanks for everything you have done with Tie Fighter and your other fun videos.
I actually bought a new computer to be able to play this game when it came out. As a Trek fan, I found it to be incredibly immersive and a lot of fun, especially the systems management during the missions which is very much in line with the command experience.
2:12 I personally cannot help but wonder how much training the player character had at this point. I have not played the game myself but do you get a sense of how Starfleet Academy works? Like how does one get assigned the role of captain during bridge simulator sessions? 23:12 It'd be neat if you could tune out the shrieking using the science(?) station. It bothers me whenever there is intrusive light or sound in Star Trek and the crew does not do anything about it.
It's a clip from another channel, so I don't recall if it is this good but i'm pretty sure this is the base graphics. Remember KA came out 4 years after SFA, that's a good chunk of time to seriously improve on graphics and back then things improved by leaps and bounds. 2001 saw the release of things like Halo, GTA III, IL-2, Black & White and more.
Will you be attempting to play Deep Space 9: Dominion Wars? I say attempt, because the game was very buggy, but when it played correctly it was very fun for me.

It's great you made this review series. Greatly looking forward to Klingon Academy - that one I actually played a lot. Thanks
Just seen this on GOG for £6.99, you're review has convinced me to try it 👍
Love Klingon Academy think your right in playing it as it is, maybe show the mods in your review at the end for some comparison.

Is that last clip of Klingon academy modded? I don't remember ships looking so good.

I only knew it from gameplay watched at most decade ago. I didn't even owned computer back in 2001. Just remember it looking closer to XvT tha XWA.
@@antonisauren8998 yup bud that looks like the base graphics

I may do at some point, its one of those Trek games I never played along with Legacy and the Starfleet Command series.
What do you mean you didn't like the Harbinger maze? Lol
:D
It's a great game.
It's a great game.
