I sang through 3 years of vocal damage in college. 4 years after graduating, my voice is finally healed enough to learn the right way. Y’all don’t let these symptoms go in the wind.
Same I sing quietly because my family is not the singing type so I sing to myself throughout the day and whenever I do try singing loud I have to push from my stomach to continue the notes and if I start singing for an hour my voice will start to hurt and crack So this video is so helpful, I do not have a vocal coach, I don't have a voice doctor, I'm just a girl learning to sing on her own! 💖
These online courses have changed my life as a singer forever! I still do my warmups and workouts and I can sing live for hours through the registers and almost any kind of songs. And - surprise - I developed a better lower register. While everyone else is trying to hit those high notes 😅 Thank you so much for your work Mama ❤
Not gonna lie, ever since I started studying operatic singing I incorporated some little things that actually helped me to get rid of the hoarse and tiredness I felt after singing a lot or working long hours as a hotel receptionist. 1 - Diafragma breathing 2- Body stretching (legs included) after waking up and at work too. 3- Massaging my face and neck a couple times a day. 3- Practising full vocal workouts, because the cool down is just as important as the warm up. 3- Always bring some water 4- Drink a nice cup of warm (not very hot) tea with honey before bed. 5- I live in a cold weather place so covering my neck helps a lot. 6- I learned not to be afraid of the high notes but rather to find the best technique according to my voice with professional help.
Thank you soooo much for your content. Talk about damage 😢. During an ACDF of C6-C7 11-09-21, my right laryngeal nerve was damaged, leaving me with a paralyzed right vocal fold. I have been devastated. After my talking voice wasn't even working right, I went to see an ENT who put a camera up through my nose, then down towards my vocal folds. He asked me to say eeee. He pulled the camera out and said, "Your right vocal fold is paralyzed." I said,"Paralyzed? What do you mean paralyzed, I'm a singer!!!" His response was," You'll NEVER sing again." My heart sunk as he quickly was leaving the room he told me you need to go back to LLUH, and they will give you injections that might help you talk. I've been seeing a laryngeal surgeon, and I've been having voice therapy. In order to talk, I compensated by squeezing my throat, and now I can't relax it. I was given a small amount of botox in my false vocal folds. I also had filler injected into my paralyzed vocal fold. This has changed my life drastically. I still can't sing, and it's hard to be heard when i talk. I have been seeing the training you do with these young people is so wonderful. I'm glad you included this video to give advice on what to do when one's voice has been compromised. I don't know what the surgeon who had performed the ACDF never told me this could happen. I was asked how important my voice was on a questionnaire 1 - 10. I wrote 10+++ I am a singer. I'm 71 now. When I was a little girl, I'd see Capitol Records in Hollywood, California, when we went to visit my grandmother. I would see that building and dream of the day I would be old enough to go there and make a record. I wanted to be like Doris Day. Music and singing have changed a lot since then. Not being able to sing has been like ... I can't describe how bad it feels. When your viewers watch this and your other videos, I hope they know how valuable you are. You are amazing. ❤
JUST WANT TO INFORM YOU GUYS: I brought Cheryl Porter free your voice course back 1 week and now I can see improvement after and before. Waiting for my voice to get more improved and sing like a pro Love you Cheryl your videos, audio, workbook and homework are amazing stuff your motivation is really good.If I feel low and open the workbook the contract I signed pushes me to sing more and develop an amazing voice... Lots of love from india ❤❤❤
Thank you Cheryl you are my vocal mother, as time has gone on my voice has become raspy and choppy sometimes, and it’s not as easy to hit high notes and hold them. You help me understand what’s going on with my voice so much better, thank you ❤️🔥
Mama I am from Nigeria I follow your vid and I noticed my voice is on the down pitch and not hitting high note and it having a crack I try training it how do I really make stay on the straight line pls 🙏🥺
What if i dont have a voice doctor😭 This still really helped me,now I know to take care of my voice! Your videos helped me so much and I do your vocal warmups everyday! I made my own routine when i do vocal agility, vowel placement, vocal warmups and warmdows plus so much more! Thank you do much for suporting us! I wanna give you the biggeset thank you coach!
That‘s an easy issue to fix - google “voice doctor in my area” and search for a doctor where you feel comfortable. Might take some time to find the right doctor or maybe you’re lucky within your first visit.
My voice used to be damaged but with lots of help and exercises, it got better. Thank you Mrs. Cheryl for helping others through your videos including this one! 😊
I honestly wish I could've had a vocal coach like you. Or any vocal coach. I trained my voice by singing to my favorites until I could hit their notes. 15 years later, Now I know I've lost the best of my voice and I don't know how/ what I did. I wish I could get it back. You're amazing and your students are so lucky.
From personal experience. Once I got a flu which then worsened into sinusitis and when I tried singing, I would lose my breath, my vocal range dropped by half and I sorta lost my intonation. During this time I told myself I couldn’t sing I was like this for around a month. Not singing for a month sucked but when I got better it felt amazing to sing once again. Avoid singing when you have any flu like sicknesses
I remember, once time, I wanted to improve my whistle register. But I was forcing my voice a lot because I didn't know how to do it. The next day, I got a sore throat with a horrible feeling of irritation. I was so shocked lol. What did you do to get better? Did you just stop singing or did you see a doctor?
@@user-tl8bt9rb5b I have had similar experiences when overusing and overdoing my whistle register in the past. What I've done is just simply stop singing, talk in a higher pitch (talking low and quiet, does more harm to your vocal cords, but also do not overtalk or talk too loud), drink hot tea, and get a lot of sleep (sleeping helps!). I was also in choir at the time, so I let my choir teacher know about my voice being hoarse and sore. My choir teacher recommended me to not participate in class, as to preserve my singing voice. So I sat at the side for a while until my voice and throat felt better.
@@jinyoungmysteria193 Thank for your advice. Theses times I feel my voice is damage by oversinging to high, I try to learn how to belt but I forgot that singing above F5 when you don't support anymore can be dangerous. So this time I just stopped singing above D5. I hope my voice will get better. Cause I feel like a permanent tension in my throat even when I don't sing.
@@user-tl8bt9rb5b I would recommend seeing a doctor for that! If left untreated, it can become a major problem. Preserving your voice so you can continue to have fun singing is important!!! Home remedies can only take you so far for preserving your voice.
Got this notification and was scared to watch 😳 I can relate to the vocal fatigue/hoarseness after singing for maybe an hour or two. I know it’s probably because I don’t warm up my voice before singing. I just get so excited to sing that I’ll just get right into it. Should note I’m not a professional singer, but still it’s a bad habit of mine.
Hello sweetheart!!Professional singer or not, it is vitally important to always warm up before singing. And also, as I said in this video, it's also important to do vocal workouts. Treat your voice like the jewel that it is. And never give up!! Love🧡❤
At one time or another I qualify for all of the above. And you’ve convinced me to get a vocal doctor and a coach because I don’t ever want to stop singing! Thank you!

I had a lot of these during puberty ! It went away progressively in about 8 months. Girls' voice changes too ! I am not an expert but I think doing a lot of warm-ups, breathing exercises and air column exercises is very important, first of all to feel confident with your voice (- and body ) and also when your voice comes back 10 times more resonant and powerful you are ready to use it ! I really love what you are doing; you have so much enthusiasm and positive energy + an amazing voice ! ❤ Thank you sooo much for your videos ❤❤
I really love this woman. I have been using her free exercises and have been told by a lady who owns a karaoke business who sees me at different venues of her "every time I see you you get better" I honestly believe a big part of this is because of doing Cheryl Porter excersises. I literally keep trying to do them for 30 days straight but the furthest I have got so far is 4 days straight then two days off and another 3 days on a day off and 2 days on. I want to purchase her course but I am waiting till I can do the free excersises for 30 days straight (and also until I have some disposable income). Here is the thing every time I do her free warms up for even 2 days straight I am discovering something different I can do that I was afraid of before. Plus, I thought I had this terrible singing voice as it's hard for me to sing in key but she has taught me not to be afraid of my voice. Also I understand so much more like agility and vibrato terms because of her articulate ways of explaining it. The biggest thing I love about her is watching how excited she is for all her students. Okay I have totally digressed off point. I am really happy she made this video. I am actually finding a lot of times at karaoke it's not the singing that is killing my voice but the need to speak so loud in a pub so others can hear me while there are dishes banging, music playing, sound system issues (sometimes), singers singing, and just general commotion....so glad she talked about protect your voice if you are singer or speaker. Also I am very happy she talks about hormonal imbalances because sometimes my throat does burn or my voice gets raspy and I think "oh no" but I realized that that always happens on my period (sorry for anyone reading this and is like tmi!) and I also realized it was happening before I intended karaoke. I even have a hard time breathing during this time. Here is something related to me now but not the video perse. I found since I cut corn ingredients out (as I figured out I have an allergy to corn) and I am talking corn syrup, cornstarch, maltodextrin, etc as well as rice and some other things I don't struggle as much with the raspy or burning or breathing during my time. Just I am really glad she addressed these different issues.
As a speech therapist: thank you for spreading the word! And I L.O.V.E. your vibe! So energetic and fun; it resonates (see what I did there?^^) and helps with relaxing (i.e. letting go of unwanted tension and straining).
Thank you coach Cheryl. I know myself who loves to sing and I sing almost everyday, thank you for these important reminders. ☺💜😌 I love your videos and you! ❤😊 Love from the Philippines! 🇵🇭❤💙💛

Thank you Cheryl for talking about it it's so taboo for a lot of singers but for a lot of coach and singing teacher. Many want to avoid talking about it, I don't know why. I love the new format of your videos it's so pop 🥊
This is super important and helpful! I’ve got a jr production of aladdin jr coming up as jasmine, and I’ve shared this video with my fellow cast members, to ensure that they don’t damage their voices, especially the young ones who don’t know a whole lot about singing. Thank you for this!
My voice started to get raspy right when she said the word raspy and I was like GIRL! But this is still really useful! She’s so sweet in all her videos as well no matter how horrible you do! Makes me feel better!
Not a singer (I sing, I just wouldn't classify myself that way) but as a student who does alot of reports, speeches and whatnot, this has been extremely helpful!! Thank you!!
I’m 32 and STILL, hit every number. Reasons why I lose confidence in my gift. I have real work to do..thank you for sharing. I wish I could have you as my permanent super vocal Coach. ❤
I'm 32 and got discouraged too after studying opera in college. Then I met Jesus and realized He's the one who gave me that gift. Now I sing for Him and He is helping me heal and sing my very best. Just remember who gave you that gift, He will help you a lot if you ask, you don't gotta do it all on your own.

I just realized that I damaged my vocal chords somehow, but I'm glad I'm not losing my gift. Anyway, thank you so much. 🫶🏻

Miss Cheryl, you are a God send. Your Vocal workouts have been a game changer for me! I still am unable to really control my vibrato and sing high without tension. It's discouraging sometimes. Your fun and positive personality helps a lot!
Thank you so much Cheryl. I sing and preach at church and I needed this. I have noticed the issues with my vibrato and my inability to sing as high as I could before. Your content has blessed me a lot.
thank you very much Cheryl, for this amazing video that can prevent us from damaging our voices, as a child with a mother who loves to sing, she can recognize the fault in my family's voices because my family loves singing, my mum does a lot of exercises because not long ago she got offered a place in phantom and the opera and she plays this character who has to hit a very high not, and get this she didn't even audition for it because she has seen her perform on stage for a very long time. I sing a lot too and I'm quite good at it, I have a couple auditions coming up, this Saturday i have an audition, and this video really helps. With love from Britain(Wales)❤❤
When you do it right, the more you sing the better you sing. Most people never get fully warmed up. The best i ever sang was on a sunday evening after concerts on Friday and Saturday and 3 church services on Sunday. After resting in the afternoon,i couldnt believe how great Sunday night was.
I have all 8 signs. And kept on singing and singing. Went to see a voice doctor a few weeks ago. Have nodes and water on my vocal cords (I'm a smoker). Never did a warm up or vocal exercise. Now I try to do yours, but I think I have a long way to go to get things better. I'm almost 47, can't picture a life without singing and music. I feel sad that I killed my voice in all those years.
The information presented by Ms.Cheryl is 💯% accurate. On behalf of your over 7 million subscribers; thank you. You are indeed our Superhero Vocal Coach.
Dear Cheryl, you saved my life when I was 18 years old. You were in Italy at the time and your videos was for italian speakers and I'M SO GLAD ABOUT IT, because I couldn't understand anything otherwise since my english was not so good (even now it's not perfect, but at least I can understand what I'm watching!). And thanks to you I realized that my teacher was teaching me nothing good... 3 years of lessons and still I couldn't sing in a decent way, never learn how to breath properly and my vocal extension was just one and a half octaves. Now I'm studying with a different teacher (since 2018) and after few months I reached goal never reached before! Now, after 4 years I can sing properly. Of course I'm not perfect but at least I can sing! And for the record, now my vocal extension is three octaves (plus four notes)... and this wouldn't be possibile without you. So thanks from the bottom of my heart!
I’m a singer, I sang incorrectly for years and I’ve been working on proper technique and Dynamics for about a year now. The day before yesterday my throat has this weird feeling where it’s feels weird to swallow. I feel like though I’ve made plenty progress from the way I sang in my past; I feel like I’m hearing and feeling some of these issues here and there. I don’t have a voice doctor as of now because I can’t afford one. I also have allergies so it’s frustrating but I sing every day and since I’ve been on this journey of learning proper techniques and dynamics, I don’t usually feel pain or experience horse ness so these past couple days have been weird for me. Hopefully I’m just fighting a little bug or something. Anyway, Thank you Ms.Porter because your videos have taught me so much and they challenge me in ways that I need and I’m very grateful! 💚 Singing is my first language so I can’t even imagine life without being able to use my voice as the instrument that it is. Singing properly is really important to me. Thank you for your time and efforts in making quality and original exercises; and content in general! 💗💚
I've never been so convinced that I was actually damaging my voice the whole time 😫. I've always felt an itch or couch after singing or should I say hitting my own range "high note" but I thought it was normal. Thank you so much Cheryl coach🙇😘. You're the best💖💖💖💖💖
I have literally all of the symptoms of voice damage. I remember, when I was younger I could sing so much better then these days. I'm kinda concern, but thank you for this video that made me realize that I have to take care of my precious voice.
More than 1 of these happened to me. This a really valuable video! I wish I have seen this video before. I would have avoided very bad singing habits. If you feel that your voice changed a lot and is worse, as Cheryl says, it is not normal, even if a doctor tells you that is ok. Go for a second opinion. You are not supposed to experience so drastic changes, to feel your voice tired frequently or to loose range. A lot of the times, serious vocal damage can be avoided just with correcting your singing technique like in my case, but sometimes you may get health problems so always be careful.
I know my voice is damaged. If i may put the guilt on someone I'd put it on my family & my music teacher back in school. And the fact that we don't have an vocal coaches where i live. Though, i finally found the courage to see a doctor about my voice. Having my next appointment in two weeks where we will discuss what we should do next. Hope i don't need surgery.
I was drinking a super strong coffee without sugar while watching this, and when I did the vocal exercise I went a little hoarse so I drank some water real quick then trying again my voice went raspy...but I know my voice isn't damaged because it is the first time this has happened to me while vocal warmups, exercise, or even just singing, it was just the coffee and rusks . Btw thx this video will be my life saver because I just started courses and if this happens again I'll go see a voice doctor. Love your channel and keep up with the awesome content💕💖🎙
Miss Cheryl I loveeeeee ❤️ these tips !!!! Thank-you soooo much ❤️❤️😝😝😊😑😜😜😊😊!! Thank-you for clarifying vocal work-outs instead of vocal warmups !!! Usually when I practice my singing at home I take 5-10 minutes breaks in between just to ensure I’m not over-using my voice !!

For the last 3 years I’ve been singing almost everyday for 5+ hours, I’ve been exercising in my specific range and it’s really helped me become a great singer.
Singing while walking was my voice workout, uphill singing was my self-challenge back in my younger years. Great tips that my choir teacher never shared with us.

What are your thoughts on faster vibrato being a 100% sign of faulty technique? I never wanted to assume faster vibrato is always a sign of a technique problem because there are plenty of singers, like myself, who just...have a naturally faster vibrato! Same with wider vibrato, it's just natural for some! Granted, I can tell when my vibrato is pushed and the pitch suffers, so I worked on a good few things and my vibrato is significantly more stable and I can play with its speed more than I was able to before, but it's still naturally on the faster end, and always will be! We can't all be Gaga or Tori Kelly, the world would be boring, right?! And the constant cracking SENT ME 🤣
I have a problem with getting louder. I can only sing quiet and I’ve started to see a little change of not being able to hit high notes. Can you address that in one of your videos please?❤
Wooooow, where on earth 🌎 were you all this year, I really appreciate you teaching voice here on Utbe, and, Thank God for coming across your videos may you live for 150 years 🙏
Thank you Coach Cheryl For your Advice I knew that my voice was damaged. No wonder I can't sing well. Because instead of starting low, I started at my whistle register. Love from Philippines 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
This video is gold! Good technique is key. Developing bad singing habits can "damage" the voice. I say "damage" because it's not the voice which is damaged, it's the technique. But sometimes it really is damage from overuse. Every point is right on target! I've learned that whenever I sense the voice is done, I stop. Just like working out, train to failure and rest. Over training will lose gains over time.
Cheryl is honest with her students❤️i wish i had a teacher like her, there are small details in my voice that could be better but i have no one to help me, my voice is getting damaged💔
I so needed this video. My son and I both recognize that we have damaged our voices!! I hope dr Steven does online apts internationally!!! Love you too!!! 💞💞💞
i wish i had known a lot of this a lot earlier in life. i once had a vocal coach in performing arts camp that needed someone to hit high notes and i was hitting them but not healthily and strained my vocal chords to the point where i almost got nodes. it took 2 months of vocal therapy to be able to sing well again and i finally learned to expand my range in a healthy way
This video was so helpful for the past two months I've been under vocal rest due to the fact that I got a cyst on my left vocal fold, but last week I got checked again and it's gone. I'm really excited to coming back to singing but at the same time I'm scared because I notice that my voice is weaker and I still get tired from speaking. This video really made me realize everything I was doing wrong. I hope u can make a video about vocal therapy
Wow🙂thank you cheryl for the insight, and i thought i was insane by singing up to 3 hours without even getting tired..though i've never had a vocal coach, but your videos has inspired me to believe in my voice☺
I got downvoted on reddit once upon a time for saying that if your voice hurts, you need to stop and go see a professional. I feel very validated right now
I already knew I was damaging my voice. Went to a voice doctor and they said I was fine so I really just keep to myself and drink water, tea and do gentle humming warm-ups as well as moments of silence
Yes!! Thank you Cheryl! I agree, so many people do endless exercises but they don't work on a technical basis to work on the right voice quality. YAY!!!! Love this video thank you!

Not gonna lie, ever since I started studying operatic singing I incorporated some little things that actually helped me to get rid of the hoarse and tiredness I felt after singing a lot or working long hours as a hotel receptionist.
1 - Diafragma breathing
2- Body stretching (legs included) after waking up and at work too.
3- Massaging my face and neck a couple times a day.
3- Practising full vocal workouts, because the cool down is just as important as the warm up.
3- Always bring some water
4- Drink a nice cup of warm (not very hot) tea with honey before bed.

Momma cheryl please this is a question, what if we don't have a voice doctor 😭
Same here
That‘s an easy issue to fix - google “voice doctor in my area” and search for a doctor where you feel comfortable. Might take some time to find the right doctor or maybe you’re lucky within your first visit.
My voice used to be damaged but with lots of help and exercises, it got better. Thank you Mrs. Cheryl for helping others through your videos including this one! 😊
How did you do it?
@@tomilolakolawole2371 Lots of Lessons, practice, and relearning and learning new voice techniques.
I had a bad cold and lost my voice entirely, I could barley whisper. It was torture not being able to sing for over a month 😭
Got this notification and was scared to watch 😳
I can relate to the vocal fatigue/hoarseness after singing for maybe an hour or two.
Love🧡❤
Oh my mom is the worship leader in our church and she sings .

Thank you sooo much for your videos ❤❤

@@CherylPorterVocalCoach can I get your tenz

Thanks Cheryl for this advice ❤
Youve created this video in the right time, Miss Cheryl. I can barely speak due to infection and when I get healthy I really need to practice
Dr. Sims was my roommate in college. He sang gorgeously- you’re in the best hands!!!❤

Can I learn how to sing like a professional at home?
When i sing i am happy; i can psalm all day out of joy but i sing out of happy ONLY! I NEED TO KEEP FINDING ME.

Thank you for this. Now I know what the problem is. Watching from Nigeria 🇳🇬
