Great video. I've just invested in some gear and plan my first wild camp this weekend weather permitting Although I'll be bringing my dog, partly for company but mainly to feel safer. But am looking forward to it and hopfully it'll be the first of many.
Hey buddy I used to live next to the mountains of mourn and I've been up there a few times thanks for sharing all the best from me in Birmingham England 🇬🇧
I can't believe this has only got 6k views?!... Absolutely awesome video Stephen. The camera angles, scenery and editing are unbelievable. I hope this year to get up the Mournes for a freezing camp😁
Love everything about this video! You are inspiring me to go outside and paint! I am in canada and is winter 😅! Loved the shadow dance ! Thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you! Frosty winter days always feel like living in a painting to me. Maybe it's because we don't get much snow in Ireland. Winter here is usually cold, wet & windy.
Thanks Tom! Yeah it made for some epic views. Gloves have done me well, although considering adding a 4th layer of mitts for really really cold conditions. Hard to keep warm if standing on a summit with -10C or colder wind chill. But best all round solution I’ve found so far
Wow what a fantastic adventure, gotta love the combination of the winter sun and freezing fog. I think I may have run into you on Commedagh, pretty sure I have you just appearing in the distant mist in my photo (posted on the Northern Ireland reddit). Going to be sad when these amazing weather conditions disappear and then the return to the usual wet and windy.
Thanks Ryan! Mini 3 is rated to fly down to -10C so handled it well. Just have to be very careful flying in freezing clouds, the props slowly ice up and eventually drone can loose power and drop
Depends on the video what kit I use. But for higher quality shoots like this I'm either using Sony A7siii or Sony A7iv. Will also be making videos with GoPro Hero11, Insta360 X3, DJI Mini 3 Pro & iPhone. I vary the camera combo depending on how much time I'll have, the style I'm going for and even how many people will be there. If I'm on my own the production value is higher as I've got the time to stop and set up shots more.
@@StephenJReid thanks for the reply. I bought the A7iv a few months back. I'm kind of struggling to get the most out of it, all the gear and no idea haha. Maybe I should just stick to grass cutting haha. I wanted something I could use and not worry about a gimbal all the time and it ticks that box. I was also planning on starting to shoot in 4k, but now have it that seems less important to me. I did a half day camera course with Paul Crawford and what I took from that was to keep it in auto! Can you recommend anyone that teaches camera/video work locally or is that a service you offer?
@@Premier_lawns_official I mostly shoot my videos with manual settings or partly manual. Rarely do full manual. A7iv is an amazing camera. Yeah I've done 1 to 1 camera training in the past. Costs a lot more than signing up to an online class, but sometimes the 1 to 1 can be more useful. I'd probably review some of your videos first and try and plan something that would be relevant. If you were interested, drop me an email on stephen@graftersmedia.com Was the camera course with Paul about video or photography?
I was going to leave a smart-assed remark like “At least it isn’t raining” but then I saw the cinematic sequence. Damn. That was amazing. Excellent use of music and imagery. More, please. 😊
As always, astonishing footage and adventure! 4:20 would be my favorite shot disappearing in the background; I cannot imaging what you go through taking some of these footage back and fourth with the camera, walking away then going back to get it, such a pain LOL - I wish there was a way for a flying mirrorless camera with unlimited battery life to follow you around at different angles and take more astonishing footage without going back to pick it up, wouldn't that be fun? Keep at it, Stephen funny man! Great Job! note: Oh yeah I know you live in Ireland but every time I see footage of Scotland I think of you because the fauna and flora are so similar between the two places, maybe I am wrong! Cheers!!!
Thanks John! That’s one of my favourite shots too and one that too the longest as I wanted a very particular framing for it. Also had to walk quite a distance uphill and back to walk out of view. I find if I give myself loads of time for these kinds of shoots that it’s quite a relaxing way to climb a mountain. Walk a bit, stop shoot some footage. Move on. Requires a slower pace and means you take more time to look around and appreciate what you can see but also to think through how to incorporate it into a story and how it will look on camera. A few sections of this are out of sequence as the shots worked best for the story in a certain order. Yeah ireland and Scotland are visually very similar. Scotland has a lot more mountains though and a lot more snow. There’s ski resorts in Scotland, none in Ireland.
Yeah probably could have but I was starting to get cold, had been out over 4hours by then and didn’t fancy standing around. I do have plans for some photography based trips that I’ll include Timelapse hopefully
Really enjoyed the video. Cracking cinematography and overall quality. Lots of humerous moments too which are always appreciated. Anyone would think you’re a professional… 😅

I'd like to see some BTS filming techniques (as a suggestion for a video), where you can tell us some of the ways you capture your content [and maybe not give away your secrets 🙂] Always entertaining to watch and also gives me some insight into Northern Ireland scenery. I'm from South Africa and we don't really get to see snow, so I've always wondered how people stay dry ... is it up to the clothing you wear ? snow = water = wet ? 🙂
Thanks Joe! 🙂 the problem with doing BTS of a shoot like this when I’m solo is I have to do twice as much work and it distracts me from what I’m trying to do. Same thing if I bring someone to film me, I struggle to have the same focus. I’ll maybe figure it out someday. Snow is only wet when it melts so as long as it’s below zero it’s a lot more pleasant than being out in even light rain. It crusts up around your trouser legs and shoes but stays frozen until you get back down. The worst thing that can happen on a hike like this in terms of being cold is to get your gloves or boots wet on the inside. Once your feet are cold it’s very hard to warm them up while you’re still out.

I love hoarfrost! So beautiful. Love the cinematic effect, but the music was the cherry on top!!
Thanks, it was a very cinematic day 🙂 Conditions were perfect for the video I had in mind.
Whoa! The ice crystals from that windblown cloud are amazing. And such dramatic views. So different from my neck of the woods.
Where are you from Daniel? It rarely gets that that cold here so I always appreciate it when it does.
You make brilliant videos ! Thank you 😊
Thanks Dave!

Very Tolkien/Jacksonesque! Incredible work.
To be compared to not just Tolkien but also Peter Jackson in the same comment is quite the accolade!
@@StephenJReid You deserve it man, this is so such fresh and epic content.
Brilliant cinematography 👍🏻
Thank you!
Awesome
Thanks Andrew!
Went camping the other night. It was Baltic ..
Great epic shots .
I’ll bet! Planning another camp in mountains in a couple of weeks, hoping it’s still crisp! 😁

Thanks Mark! Was that the Haystacks camping video? I love crafting those cinematic sequences.
Yes Stephen it was indeed in the Lake District. It's also great to see your videos in our own back yard. Awesome!..
Loved this!

Different time of year feels like different mountains, drone shots are amazing
Yeah I love the transformation up there when winter hits
Great video and you are such a fun man
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just Awesome 🤤
Nice effects in the audio initially , not sure if that was intended?
those gloves remind me of the aliens from the movie (Alien 1979),
Yeah the VO I recorded live outdoors and there was background noise so I decided to try and make it sound like a CB radio. Haha alien gloves
Love it, how’d the drone handle the cold conditions?
