Hahahaha brilliant Stephen, the joys of wintercamping eh 🤣🤣 Very well put together video considering the conditions . Quite easy when you're miserable just to sack the filming and concentrate on keeping warm and just trying to sleep through it so well done on that. As an ex raver i quite enjoyed your wee rave in the middle 🤣🤣🤣 What a godsend that wall was
Wow. What a night. You could be looking at investing in another sleeping bag to cope with lower temperatures to keep cosy. Looked great though. An adventure that you'll remember.
So I have a 4 degree comfort bag. -2 comfort limit. I Added a fleece liner (extreme thermal one) and with those together I was just ok in -3. I had to add a whole extra comfort 2 rated down quilt to the mix to suddenly be too warm in -8 😅 the liner is great for extra coziness but it is nothing like adding a quilt to the bag
Sea to summit ember eb ii quilt on top of sea to summit spark sp ii bag. With sea to summit reactor extreme fleece liner Like yourself - layered approach so can use parts of it in summer and all of it for winter
Lol….such nonchalance in that “natural” shot…..very cool scenery up there. I think ill pass on the whole winter camping thing…. BRRRR! Love your stuff, keep the laughs and awesome adventures coming.
@@BorderRambler I've been a bit sick with a cough and head cold since. Happens every time I don't get proper sleep or get a bit cold. I've ordered a fleece sleeping bag liner for my next camp!
I'm trying to embrace the weather more. It's wet, windy and cold a LOT here. If I can just figure how to live with it, that's a lot of extra time to be outdoors doing things.
Absolutely loved this vid. I laughed my leg off at the techno section. Watched it 3 times and laughed out everytime (i hope thats the response you were looking for) thanks for the great content
Omg you are funny! I had a good laugh with your faces while was raining all night 😂! Cool light dance btw ! Thanks for another cool wild camping experience!
@Stephen J Reid Would have made for a good video and catching title all the same... 'Man in 2 season tent pitches tent in 60mph winds and pond then emails manufacturer to complain' 😬😂
Another great video Stephen. I use the Rab Neutrino 400 as a summer bag, there’s no way on earth it would keep me warm in those temperatures, but I do sleep very cold. I’ve got the Neutrino 800 for winter. Keep up the great work
Thanks John 🙂 Guy in the shop told me it would be perfect as it’s -1 comfort and -7comfort limit, but guessing that’s in controlled conditions with no wind coming through. To be fair I woke up too warm in the middle of the night when the temp up to about 2c and the wind died a bit. Was cold again in morning when it was windy Have since bought a fleece liner which should hopefully do the trick. Wasn’t freezing cold, just on the uncomfortable side. Means I can use same bag in summer. I’ve sold my current summer bag as it was nearly 1kg. Currently have 3 sleeping bags. Hopefully a layered approach will bring me down to 1.
Thanks, Graham. Very happy with the tent it’s not perfect, no tent is. But it ticked all the major boxes for me. It’s fast to pitch, about three minutes if in a hurry. It’s under 2 kg inner and outer pitch at the same time. It’s got a fairly small footprint but still has a porch large enough to cook inside and is quite strong and four season.
Class, it’s nearly like one of those final destination movies from the noughties where the water was creeping up on your tent to drown you in the middle of the night 😂
Well done for toughing it out in those conditions! The Mourne wall can be a saviour, although it can only stop so much of the weather 😂. Looking forward to my next camp up there but will hope for a less windy night than this one!
Thanks! 🙂 We had a good few dry weeks over here before Christmas, but I was so busy with work, didn't get out much. Hoping for those dry fresh spring days!
@@BooniesPeaks haha yeah, I've seen the flood defences in places like Glenridding and the photos of the crazy floods. Hoping to get back to the lakes this year, which month is the driest? 🤣
What type of tent did David have? It looks like my Big Agnes, but I wouldn't have thought it would have stood up to those kind of winds! Great video, enjoyed.
It’s a tarptent scarp 1 and the strongest tent there as it has additional crossing poles for strong winds. I wanted one for a while but wanted a faster pitching option. I’m
Great video Stephen, I have hiked that part of the Mournes a good few times but never camped in that spot. The Rave on the summit had me laughing. Just goes to show you can still have a fun camp even when the weather is bad!
Could you give me any pointers how to do that? I like my MSR, I wouldn't normally be out in it in that weather but it's stood up well in a few high winds. Not so good in the rain though and I've only used it about 10 times!
@Johnny Reid I winged it TBH just mixed up some clear silicone and white spirit and brushed it on the inside and outside of my flysheet. It doesn't look pretty in places, but if you're keeping the tent as I am for years it doesn't matter if its warm and dry 👍 There's plenty of YT vids explaining how to seam seal. I did mine waited until dry and did it again... no leaks so far 👍
Bonkers but funny. You might need to grow that beard of yours for some added insulation 😄 All the best Stephen. P.S, I subscribed today so looking forward to your next adventure 🙂
What a frenetic adventure! Looking forward to your next one, hopefully a little warmer where the long sanguine shots transport us. What mat were you using? I can’t say enough about the Thermarest Xtherm for being a game changer on nights like this.
Thanks CH, think I’ll wait for calmer weather for the next one! Have a couple of ideas. Always tricky finding the balance between long slow edits and retention. Always experimenting. That was the Sea to Summit Ultralight insulated and it’s a tad cold for that weather R rating of 3.1. The foam mat probably brings that up to about 4 but it’s only 5cm thick and I’m a side sleeper so I don’t fully inflate it. Really I need a the new XT version that’s 10cm
@@StephenJReid side sleeper as well. Have the tapered version which works for the main touch points (hips and shoulders) and have not bottomed out. It's almost too warm for summer camps. 6.9 R really makes a difference. What tent were you using? How was the condensation?
@@CH-rg8zp I might look into that one, then! Does it sound like lying on a bag of crisps though? I was using the Terra Nova Southern Cross one. Ticks most of the boxes for me. How on earth did this video only get 345 likes? The psychedelic rave scene was worth at least a million! Brilliant!

Quite possibly your best film ever. The cloud silhouette dancing was fab :)
