This documentary was a decent encapsulation of Peter Biskind's book. But as others have indicated in their comments, if you liked the video you'll love the book. It's one of the most entertaining books I've ever read. In writing it, Biskind conducted hundreds of interviews with the people directly involved in making those movies from the 60's and 70's: directors, stars, agents, studio executives, etc. You would think their responses would be bland and politically correct but its the exact opposite. There's enough dirt dished out to fill a quarry; the stories about Dennis Hopper alone are worth the price of the book.
So think of the documentary as an appetizer. If you want the full meal try reading Biskind's book, you'll be glad you did.

Corman is God, there is none greater. Without him, the DIY spirit of today's camcorder filmmakers would never have happened. His existence far outweighs any of his movies.

The film is okay, but the book is on a whole other level - just can go into a lot more detail and depth. Biskind did an amazing job with it.

@@TheWaterboarders It's probably a bit gossipy in some places, but never the less, Biskind gives a real feel for the personalities and the culture of the time that was a real golden age of filmmaking.

It's so annoying listening to people talk about how older movies are better than modern ones. They aren't better, they are different. Just because a movie is a sequel or a box office hit doesn't make it bad, in fact it's the opposite, the reason it makes so much money is because people enjoy it, the reason they have a sequel is because it is a story that people enjoy and want to get more of, they want to see these characters again. That would be like saying a TV series is bad just because it has a second season

What most interests me about this doc is how could it apply to today. How might studios adapt? It seemed an impossible query at the time, but it at least as applicable today. With this last year's performances (largely outside of projection), what is the next step? As yesmen scramble and youtubers flourish, will the Heads readjust positively or are we bent on the path of franchises and sequels?

damm awesome doco on the history of american cinema of the 60's and 70's. if it was not for easy rider we would not of had this golden time of movies. the golden age of cinema for me was the 60's to the late 90's. today movies are so damm boring. but at the time the movies kicked ass with its rebel casts and directors. thank you america for easy rider otherwise hollywood would of been dead with the shit it was carrying on with.

The book pissed a lot of people off, so they had trouble getting cooperation for the documentary adaptation of it. HEAVEN'S GATE needs it's own documentary and they knew it, so they probably thought to cut the film off before that happened.
