On My Own is breathtaking and heartbreaking at the same time.
Preach, my heart breaks on Eponine's behalf every single time, as she knows that Marius will never love her back, but she's loyal to him anyway.
Other great ballads: "This Nearly Was Mine" (South Pacific), "Send In The Clowns" (A Little Night Music), "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables" (Les Miserables), "Losing My Mind" (Follies), "No More" (Into The Woods), "Left Behind" (Spring Awakening), "Gethsemane" (Jesus Christ Superstar), "No One Knows Who I Am" (Jekyll & Hyde), "Evermore Without You" (The Woman In White), "Lesson #8" (Sunday In The Park With George).
I would add "If I can't Love Her" (Beauty and the Beast).
I’ll Cover You (Reprise) from Rent makes me cry every time.
Me too. I cry from Without You all the way through to I'll Cover You (reprise).
A song not on here that I love from Broadway was Memory (Reprised) from Cats. Anytime I hear it, I shed a few tears
Cosign on the reprise version. That’s actually the only one I really listen to.
"It's quiet uptown" knocks me down everytime...
How's about:
.Why from Tick Tick Boom
.Maybe from Annie
.If Only (Quartet) from Disney's The Little Mermaid
.If I Told You from The Wedding Singer: The Musical
.Another Suitcase in Another Hall from Evita
.Home or If I Can't Love Her from Disney's Beauty and the Beast
I actually think “a little fall of rain” so much sadder 😢
"Ce n'est rien, Monsieur Marius, qu'un peu de sang qui pleure" 😭
Who lives, who dies, who tells your story is amazing.
I cry every time i hear it!😢
No one does Wicked better than these two!
The OG’s are UNTOUCHABLE IN MY EYES
India Menzel is Elphaba the power and passion in her voice is just wow.
@@user-PuppyDan IKR! Her Elphaba is so iconic!
Another song that makes me cry is The Winner Takes it All from Momma Mia. It's just such an emotional song.
_If I Didn’t Believe In You_ or _Nobody Needs to Know_ (heck, even _Still Hurting_ ) from The Last Five Years are all great contenders!
There are some songs from "Carrie: the Musical" that make me teary-eyed
It's such an underrated musical
I have a playlist titled ‘Broken - Broadway Version’ for just this purpose. Some of my favs that weren’t on your list are
One Song Glory - Rent
If I Didn’t Believe In You - The Last 5 Years
The Dark I know Well & Don’t Do Sadness - Spring Awakening
Superboy & The Invisible Girl - Next 2 Normal
Superboy and the invisible girl is fantastic. Also from that show is You Don’t Know
@@jaylayson69 You don’t know is a good one, for sure
I recommend “I want to Hold your Hand” from “Across the universe” movie musical (2007). Fantastically reworked Beatles song to be slow and sad
Send In The Clowns 💔
What I Did For Love 💔
Memory🐱
Bring Him Home 🇲🇫
A House Is Not A Home🏠
Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again🌹
What about "There's a Place for Us" from West Side Story
The only times I got weepy in watching a broadway show was in Les Miz when I heard the song "Bring Him Home".
For Good holds a special place in my heart because me and my best friend played Glinda and Elphaba during camp and we sang For Good. Everyone cried. It was so emotional.
I feel like "She Used to be Mine" is my theme song.
Oh that #1 spot is definitely up there. Such a sad song. As for the male side, Ben Platt’s Words Fail, gives me a good cry. Emotive singing that gets me.
Tell Me It's Not True from Blood Brothers is absolutely heartbreaking and definitely shouldn't have been missed off this list
This made me cry half way through... And I wasn't even sober
Memory not being on this list is tragic and I'm extremely surprised😔! Also The Movie in My Mind makes me cry in the ugliest way possible!
I used to sing On My Own while riding alone in the crowded city during New Year's eves. I don't sing that anymore. I'm already used to being alone.
This is me in NYC daily but I realize it's just the Music on My Mind lol! No but really, sometimes music transforms me within the MTA!
@@joejoe5673 Yep, I suppose music has such power in controlling our emotions, which is probably why my therapist recommended me on trying instrumentals only to avoid being influenced by the lyrics.
I dreamed a dream and Epilogue from Les Miserables
I wasn’t prepared for falsettos I watched it with my friend yesterday and we’re still crying the next day
i love she used to be mine!! i believe they're doing a waitress proshot but i hope to one day get a movie adaptation
Girl... Waitress is the musical adaptation of the film with Kerri Russel.
@@kalimile1917 I mean a movie musical adaptation...like with hairspray or mean girls. those started as movies then were turned into musicals and then the musicals were turned into movies
@@jwindsor6274 lmao that makes more sense xD. Tbh I doubt it'll happen though. Adrian Shelly's husband owns the movie since she died and he's made it a mission to preserve her legacy.
@@jwindsor6274 The musical only was approved bc of the all female creative team. In a documentary he said that the spirit of female empowerment and quirkiness was something he felt Adrian would want so he approved the musical.
@@kalimile1917 oh i didn't know all that. but at least we'll have the proshot :)
Even though it had a very short run on Broadway, Bonnie and Clyde's "Dying Ain't So Bad" always makes me sob.
Watch team starkid musicals and do a list of their songs musicals
Also "Being Alive" is sad for me hahaha I will now listen to them fully and cry, just for fun 🎶💙🥂
“Easy to Be Hard” from Hair and also “Flesh Failures/ Let the Sunshine In” from Hair. I recommend the 1979 movie by Milos Forman
A pretty good list. But my number one song to listen to when I’m sad is “You Don’t Know” from “Next to Normal”. Heck almost any song from this show could be on this list.
So Big, So Small made me tear up the first time i watched Dear Evan Hansen, relating it to my own Mom.
#9 was my high school’s spring concert senior song. Madison Comprehensive misses me, I suppose. I miss it, too. If there are any Rams out in Mansfield, Ohio’s Madison Local School District who see this, let me just say that you’ll never walk alone.
That’s helpful to know!
you will be found from dear Evan Hanson always gets me crying!
i knew It's Quiet Uptown made it on the list
We Do Not Belong Together/Move On
And
Back To Before
im suprised its not. 'I dreamed a dream', 'empty chairs at empty tables' or ' a little fall of rain' from Les Mis tbh
GOD I love me a good sad musical theatre song!! 😅😭🎶
Not a Day goes by is emotional song and i saw Bernadette Peters feel a little bit sad and it happens to Chuck Wagner and he got one tear of his eyes and he sang No one is Alone from Into the Woods and he sang that song at Pensacola Beach at Florida around 2010s
No one is Alone, Children Will Listen and No More make me cry so hard.
THE I LOVE YOU SONG YESSS
“Somewhere” from “West Side Story”
I completely get the love for "On My Own," but the "I Love You Song" from Putnam is a no-brainer for #1 instead of an honorable mention.
Samantha Barks! Enough said
One song that always gets me is heart of stone from six
Left behind from Spring Awakening would've been a good choice.
Big miss with Losing my mind from Follies!!! When I saw Bernadette Peters I thought it was there...
You’ll never walk alone is also Liverpool FCs anthem
"No One is Alone" from Into the Woods
Home from Beetlejuice should've been in this
What would I do is such a underated song
You Must Love Me from the movie version of Evita starring Madonna
anybody got the spotify link to the list?
Bro, Your Daddy’s Son from Ragtime should have been on here
Yea, I love #1
Let the sunshine in from Hair.
The intro included a snippet of Fine, Fine Line from Avenue Q. From a silly and irreverent show, it might actually belong on this list. Even Fantasies Come True from the same show deserves some consideration.
Over 100 comments and I can't read them all but TELL Me I'm not the first to say "You Are Not Alone" from Into the Woods.
They forgot “Endless Night” from The Lion King on Broadway!
Pretty much Le Miz is one boo hoo fest. But Bring Him Home..especially if it happens to be sung by Colin Wilkinson..has me doing the double ugly cry.
You also left out
Memory..Cats
Last Night of the World..Miss Saigon
They Live in You..The Lion King
I know turning wasn’t on here because it’s not relatable, but not even a runner up? It’s about a bunch of children dying
You include There’s A Fine Fine Line from Avenue Q in the intro but not the actual countdown? What gives?
Dear Evan Hansen always breaks me.
This list doesn't make sense
If I am sad why would I listen something to cry
because crying is healing
I was in no way prepared for ‘So Big/So Small’ when I took my son, who was 20 at the time to see Evan Hansen. He was home from college that weekend, and I was still reeling from getting divorced about 8 month before after 26 years of marriage. The song captured how I felt so well, even though he was 17 when his father walked out right after he graduated high school, especially after my son went off to college and the house was empty. I was a wreck during that song, years streaming down my face. My son just held my hand and didn’t let go.
The emotive lyrics and the delivery of a storyline. It’s a theme a lot of parents I’m sure who suddenly become a single one can react to. My mom is one of them. So it hits home for me.
You Will Be Found and Words Fail from Dear Evan Hansen always sends shivers down my spine. I was bawling my eyes out when I saw the movie in theaters.
Heck yeah! This album got me teary eyes in a couple of their tracks. And this is coming from listening to the album without even watching either the Broadway play or the film
This is the Moment from Jekyll and Hyde.
Someone like you…. Linda Eder is iconic!
Once Upon a Dream, and Someone like You are the ones that make me cry. In His Eyes is a good song, too.
@@aalflyguy1184 I totally agree!
A New Life....another gem from Jekyll and Hyde!
It should of been 20, not 10 broadway songs.(There are too many.)
I feel like the most saddest song in les miserables is empty chairs and empty tables 😭the feeling of loosing everyone
On my own is also very sad but empty chairs and empty tables is the most saddest 💔
The I'll Cover You reprise is number one for me
Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again
🎭 "The Phantom of the Opera"
I love On My Own, Memory, It's Quiet Uptown, and I Dreamed a Dream. Whenever I need a good cry, I just listen to one of those songs. Then, I have a good ugly cry.
These are all great! I also love Lily's Eyes from The Secret Garden, I Am the One (Reprise) from Next to Normal, If Only (Quartet) from The Little Mermaid, and Tell Me Why from Amazing Grace!
So glad to see someone else mention Next to Normal!
‘Seventeen’ from Heathers is a great one, as well as the death scene songs from Hamilton - especially Hamilton’s death speech in ‘The World Was Wide Enough.’
Also, when I first saw Moulin Rouge, it did cause me to completely lose it when Christian turned the gun on himself and Satine was dying in ‘Your Song (Reprise).’
Memories from Cats and Home from BeetleJuice
In Hamilton, there was supposed to be a reprice of Dear Theodosia where Burr tells his daughter through tears that her mother, his wife has passed away and how he will continue to love her and care for her until she's grown up. It's on UA-cam if you want to listen to it but LET ME TELL YOU, IT DESTROYED ME.
My friend and I sang “For Good” at our high school graduation. Holding back tears the entire time.
Pretty good list, but should’ve had “Finale” from Phantom on here
I admit to 3 songs for sadness: For Good (Wicked); Purely because I just need to belt out something sad to get it out my system: I Dreamed a Dream (Les Miserables): Sometimes I find myself thinking about a...unfortunately toxic relationship I was in and how it ended. Ergo, sometimes I have to sing it; Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again (Phantom of the Opera): Well...honestly I've always loved this solo from the musical, however I recently lost my dad in an unfortunate car accident and this song has actually help me whenever I got uber-depressed merely thinking about him.
My friend and I sang For Good in a concert. There wasn't a dry eye in the house, not even on stage. I was just thinking about my best friend that is in jail. What would I say to her if I knew that I was never going to see her again?
Songs not on this list that deserve a mention:
Words Fail - Dear Evan Hansen
I Know the Truth - Aida
Elaborate Lives Reprise - Aida
If I Can’t Love Her - Beauty and the Beast
"On My Own" from Les Miserables, "There's a Fine, Fine Line" from Avenue Q, and "Pretty Funny" from Dogfight for me. "Meadowlark" from a Baker's Wife is also a tearjerker.
Meadowlark does not get nearly enough love!!!
"Legally Blonde" is one of my favorites. It hits me every time I hear Laura Bell Bundy's voice break singing "some girls were just meant to smile"
"I'd Give My Life for You" from Miss Saigon??
Those You've Known from Spring Awakening and a lot of songs from Next to Normal make me cry
Top 10 song mashups in movie trailers that broke the internet?
The Bee Gees also wrote a special song for “Saturday Night Fever Musical” in 1998 called “Immortality”, they later dueted with Celine Dion on it, it’s a breathtaking song
I Don't Care Much from Cabaret and Wicked Little Town get to me. After having heart break from not only past lovers but friends i considered family, it got to a point where I don't care who i have to lose so long as it saves me from the hurt. And Wicked Little Town is such a powerful song to anyone gender queer, myself included
Your Daddy's Son from Ragtime. What could be more sad than that??
I'm here from Matilda, was bawling my eyes out
I agree, when I performed in Rent when I was a Sophomore our last show especially, we were all crying singing that song
Sarah Brown Eyes from Ragtime makes me sob!
Those You've Known from Spring Awakening is heartbreaking, especially in the Deaf West production...
“My Child Will Forgive Me” from Parade gets me every single damn time. It just leaves me broken.
I would add a couple from Hedwig and the Angry Inch... "Wicked Little Town" and "The Long Grift."
Someone said it. Wicked little town is such a sad and powerful song to any one who is gender queer. And i love it with all my heart
first thing i thought of was she used to be mine, santa fe, on my own, i dreamed a dream, and something to believe me
What about Who Lives Who Dies Who Tells Your Story & Dear Theodosia
How do you show these clips on UA-cam without being copyright
These are all awful
And?
Seeing renee fleming in the carousel singing you'll never walk alone was tear jerking for sure!
