Another counterpoint to the “simplicity” is that any family living in a single home has an even simpler and cheaper option: Start a single player world and open to LAN.
playing modded with my sister, I just added a usb wifi card to my PC, and we were rolling with LAN immediately. It is deceptively simple. Also, ngl, but many families playing minecraft together do it on console with splitscreen. I have thousands of hours with my own mother building things in creative on xbox 360... Realms fixes a problem that was already solved ages ago and much better.
Not always the best option, because LAN requires one person to be online and hosting at all times. If that person does not want to play Minecraft and the others do, well the others are out of luck. With a Realm, it is continuously hosted online for anyone to access regardless of the host's presence.
@@iplayksplol9974 How so, I've literally never had it not work, it could very well be issues with your network security stuff in your router not liking minecraft
I know that you must have already tested all the troubleshooting possibilities, luckily I am a developer and network analyst and after analyzing for a while I came to the conclusion that the problem is that this is bullshit
I play on my realm on a daily basis and never got disconnected. I simply use the realm to play one world, no matter where I am. I can play my world at home and at work. I know $8 is a lot for that "cloud" feature.
I believe "RateLimiter Disallowed Request" is due to a rate limit on trying to connect. Limiting join spam makes sense. Forcing you to hit this limit because of shitty hosting that you have to pay for does not.
"RateLimiter Disallowed Request" is a status message I've seen before when trying to use the authentication API. From what I've seen, it is 3 requests per 15 seconds.
As someone who has owned a realm for over 2 maybe even 3 years now, I would say that all of your points in this video are very correct, and I would love if they made those advanced option changes. Also, on the point about the versions, I'm pretty sure they do let you use not the latest minor version (like 1.20.1 when 1.20.2 is the latest version, but probably not like 1.16.1 when 1.16.2 is the latest version since that actually added stuff), and when you said about having a datapack-like plug-in system, they do let you use datapacks, you just need to create a world with the datapack you want, and then import it in to the realm.
Why not switch to a classic server host? Oracle Cloud has a free tier powerful enough to run servers without any lag, provided you know how to set it up on Linux yourself
I once had a realm for a group of about 30 players on playstation, at first it was nice and ran well. Towards the end of the server tho the performance kept getting worse and worse. I remember during the last month or so of the few years the server had been on the server would lag real bad with just 3 players online. During peak hours when we had 8-10 people on the server would occasionally crash and overall be unplayable. I dont know if its gotten better or worse since. But one thing i am sure of is im not going back to realms especially after i found a java host thats cheaper and way more capable.
What host did you find? I really want to get a server to play with my friends and at first I used bisect hosting, but it spend 8 dollars for a 2 gigabyte plan that would barely run when 4 players were online.
@@p0gchap965 you can use oracle free cloud (24gb of ram) and 24/7 server which u can host everything you want (not limited to minecraft) played on it with like 350 mods with 5 other ppl and it didn't lag at all
@@p0gchap965 Sparked Host, about a dollar per gigabyte on their budget hardware. Had no issues with performance on the lowest end hardware and 6gb of ram. I pay abt 11 dollars total for the server monthly as i have some other stuff like a custom domain.
It used to actually matter back in the day which he just said after starting this comment. I was going to say more but he's now explaining what I was going to say way better.
When realms first came out I'm pretty sure it was much harder to set up a server, even with 3rd party hosting sites. It is overpriced, but its also the quickest, simplest, and easiest way for people or parents to use when they just want a server for their small group of friends to play on.
@@lasercraft32 only 2 reasons I've ever used realms was that you get 1 month free (and you can create multiple accounts and get free infinite realms) and on bedrock edition mc is so scuffed I couldn't join my friends world and hosting servers there is a pain in the ass(average bugrock L)
Dynamic resource allocation is pretty common in cloud computing, and in AWS EC2 developers could integrate this kind of resource/instance scaling into service/apps with relative ease.
I actually used an ec2 to make a personal Minecraft server for free and it's mind blowing just how much AWS can do. I was limited to 2gb ram so I can't say much but I can vouch for AWS. They have incredible amounts of customizability. They just left AWS because Microsoft obviously wants them to support Azure so they can say Mojang uses it.
but mine hut is generally an awful service if you ask me. It has the stupidest way to connect: go through on server filled with ads and somehow find your server. and even then there is dumb limits like playtime being limited to 1 hour, ads whenever you join, and lots of delays when you join(waiting on another world).
Honestly hard disagree. I've used things like Minehut and Aternos for years as a kid because I didn't have the money for a 3rd party website and my parents felt more comfortable with a built in system. Realms performed so much better than the barely stable servers available there imo
Realms make a little more sense on bedrock because of how terrible server support is on that version. They are simple and easy to access, and realms you are in appear in the friends tab and so are easy to get into, or if you own a realm it’s pinned above all of the worlds you have
Sad part is my friends all play on console and so for everyone to play we have to get a realm because apparently you can't add any servers you only have the ones Minecraft gives you on PlayStation. It sucks because I'd like to think I know more about technical Minecraft and could set up a server, plugin, make a data pack so on, but no I'm forced to use realms because of the monopoly that Mojang has over console servers
@@Just_A_MicrowaveI believe theres a very convoluted way to add custom servers to consoles. I remember doing so on Nintendo Switch a few years ago. I think you can find it if you search. It envolves changing some wifi options or something like that.
they actually make less sense on bedrock, since there you have the option to simply join a friend's world, or invite them to join yours, and for free, so why would you even need a realm?
@@CupcakeShiny Because joining your friends means you are running off their connection, and in general the performance of joining a friend can be variable at best to unplayable at worst. Also if you want to play when that friend who owns the world isnt there you are screwed.
The reason they aren't giving users access to change server software is probably because it's against their EULA. Distributing modified server software itself isn't allowed, so why would they even do that?
This was only a big issue in the past AFAIK. Forge & Fabric do not distribute modified software, PaperMC distributes a binary patch, SpigotMC only distributes BuildTools (basically DIY). However, they probably have a good reason why you don't get shortcuts to install various mod loaders on the client side in their launcher (similar to MultiMC) - so it'd probably apply to realms too?
@@TheKodeToad I think it's a matter of "official support", as people would probably see it being in an official Mojang product and think it is now endorsed by them. It would be great, but it's probably not something they would want to do. Additionally, for mods specifically, making people associate Mojang with Curseforge would be horrible.
Thats one of Bedrocks awesome Features. But just slap some Free mods onto Java and you got the same Features without paid Skins/"Mods" /Maps/Texturepacks, random Redstone etc. Java is simply superior, on PC, if you are willing the have some fun with modding.
@@user-to7ds6sc3p if you are talking about customization then pc is clearly superior in any game since you know you can pretty much do whatever you want
Realms makes more sense for Bedrock because of the policies of Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo making it require troubleshooting to join non featured servers.
As can be seen from the render distance, the hardware resource allocation per realm is kept pretty much on the low end. There might be a dynamic ram system to accomodate more players for stability, but again, as minimal as possible. And like i saw someone else mention, this is essentially opening SP to LAN where the only control you really have is gamerules - which btw when you really don't have any basic knowledge of server management, won't really get any use out of. And if we're going off of Java base, that money can be instead put into -like mentioned in video- a host, where you know what you're actually getting, with the optional customizability. On top of that, from what i've seen, most (bigger)hosts have a decent knowledgebase/FAQ section, some even with video instructions, if you'd ever happen to get stuck or would want to change stuff, even if you're a little dumdum in server management department. In conclusion, Realms really has no place in modern Minecraft. When it was announced 10 years ago, it was a nice official and simpler way to host a vanilla server cause back in the day we didn't have all these customization options, but with how big Minecraft is nowadays -all the mods, addons, plugins, different server platforms-, Realms really has turned obsolete nowadays and is sort of a scam with what it actually offers.
Had same issue with joining friends' realms and I would keep getting kicked. Can't remember the specific solution, but try lowering your render distance to reduce how much data is being sent between you and the server. Think it's something about a false positive in a system that prevents spamming the server or whatever.
The fact that a console isn't even accessible makes even those crappy free server hosting looks good. Like i get trying to make it simple for the less knowing but not even an "advanced" mode is crazy
@@EevsterReal it's actually genuinely good even on large modpacks. no idea why some people are just hosting thousands of servers for free for anyone including bots and even keeping them good...
"playing on the latest version only" This is not a Realms only issue, but a bedrock issue. You cannot choose any version other than the latest with the vanilla bedrock launcher. (if there is one I am not aware of it)
I decided to host a realm for a few people on Bedrock edition back in 2020. It took about 1 week for the realm to be joinable, it just wouldn't turn on. Eventually when it did work, more issues started to happen, trying to download the world would result in an error 99% of the time, trying to replace the world would lead into errors too. When everything started to work, entities would despawn very frequently, be it tamed or not. Later that year the realm would start crashing more frequently and data would corrupt. In 2022 my friend decided to try hosting a realm, it was fine for the first 2 weeks, but then all entities would start despawning again, book and quill would have many pages corrupt and some chunks started acting weird. Realms are extremly underwhelming, the render distance is stuck at 8 and does not have great hardware. I think it's fine for someone younger that want a easy way to play with friends, but setting up a server yourself isn't that hard, and even then, getting a server from a 3rd party host you can get both cheaper & better hardware. There is a bit of a limit to realms that Mojang doesn't really tell you, realms that is over 500mb will start having more issues, for Bedrock at least, worlds above 4-5gb will either not work, or be very broken.
My biggest problem with Realms (and the reason my personal server with friends moved to a different host) is that you're only allowed a maximum of 5GB world uploads... That seems reasonable, but when you're a few players exploring the world with elytras, 5GB fills up FAST. That wouldn't be too much of an issue in and of itself (after all, the world is already on the Realms, no need to upload it) if the only way to set datapacks wasn't to download the world, set the datapacks and upload it again! This meant that once the 5GB limit got reached, the datapacks we had on were it. No more could be added, but most importantly, the ones we had could never be updated again. If a new version of Minecraft broke one of our datapacks, too bad! No updates.
it does help a teensy tiny bit if you use mca selector after you download the world and before reuploading. it'll help bring down the world size and lets you generate new chunks especially after a major update
TheMisterEpic considering how amazingly meticulous their choice of "official safe minecraft servers" is, you will be waiting a very long time for an update
Tbf bedrock realms can be really useful, I used them to transfer my worlds from my Switch to my computer (which you can't do otherwise without jailbreaking your switch...)
Realms used to make sense for bedrock edition as the official dedicated server software was not out yet, and third-party alternatives sucked for normal survival
Its so strange to see how messy Realms are on Java. I have a 3 person one on Bedrock for me and my girlfriend and we have never had a single issue outside of the lower than favorable render distance.
1:09 the funniest thing about minecraft is how the game is so intricate that you litteraly can't run a server without some plugins because when notch was making the game he likely never intended millions of strangers playing together in his game all at once.
Personally I actually think realms minigames are one of the main reasons to be used - The games tend to be very unique and high quality and are very fun to play
I bought and ran a realm for a few months when it was still a new-ish service. Nothing but trouble across the board; connection errors on the regular, backups not working correctly, and more effort expended on their end collecting the monthly fee than making sure the service even works as advertised. Even when the server was performing at its best, there was awful lag that made basic tasks a chore and combat impossible with only one player online. There was no logging and no console, only a reset button that didn't appear to do anything. There was a selection of custom maps you could try, most of which either didn't work right or at all. Oh, and they nagged me to download a backup of my nonfunctional realm for a full year before finally deleting it (even though I thought that's what the big trash-can-icon "Delete Realm" button did). 2/10, avoid this service.
Compare that to some guy making a smallc company hosting servers. He and his small team were somehow avalaible 24/7 (idk he seems to never sleep lol) And upon ANY issue i found he immedietly helped, if all else failed he moved my server to a different machine wich always fixed connectibility issues, and everything else was just my fault for messing up my plugins and configs wich he still resolved without a fuss. Beyond that he made an UI where i can either with a single click install stable pre configured packages for modded and vanilla, or gave the option to methodically build your own custom server experience using remote file access. And it cost me less to make a stable server for TWICE the people realms could handle, and it wasn't a hard limit, the limit was the hardware i rented and i got to decide how to allocate it based on my budget and player count. if i really wanted to i could have configured it to handle up to a hundred people by installing all the performance fixing mods and plugins.
From personal experience, I think Realms is a good starting point to get your feet wet with server hosting. However, on the complexity spectrum, I think they've gone too far towards the simple extreme. I'm now at the other extreme of self-hosted with Docker on a Linux-based server. I think server hosting sites (eg. Shockbyte, MCProhosting, Apex Hosting) fall somewhere in the middle, which is not easy; being simple and user-friendly enough for most people while simultaneously offering advanced features for those that know what they're doing
I wouldn't be opposed to a multiple tier system, but I would want them to lower the current realms to a realms basic and lower the price and allow higher tiered options to allow for actually good server configs
As an Australian, I found it hard to play my realm as well - my other Australian friend couldn't join my realm as well. I believe that Mojang just decided not to put any good servers in, or near, Australia for Java. I can easily join my Bedrock realm, but Java is impossible to play without a VPN.
Absolutely this, bedrock realms work reasonably fine (a few issues but that's realm issues, not poor server connection issues). Java? Forget that, I'd rather be spawn trapped in obsidian over the java realms experience
Yeah, its for sure a time-out problem due to packet loss or something along the lines of that. There is a mod that could have solved this issue, but it has to be installed on both the server and client. Just another reason to hate Realms!
I host a server for my friends on my desktop and, while it wasn't the easiest thing to set up, it wasn't that bad either. If you don't need people to be able to connect from outside your home wifi network, it's even easier as you won't have to change router settings. And it's as customizable as it gets while being fully free
Man am I glad I went down the rabbit hole of finding free hosts and then learning by myself how to set up plugins, worlds, install server versions and etc. Seeing this literally hurt my brain, Minecraft needs to work on this.
apart from the connection issues, realms seems really good for what it is trying to achieve, I know that as a kid I would have struggled with third party server stuff, and I used realms as a kid. it is really easy for 11 year olds, so I'm happy it exists for that reason alone, even though I do use third parties (I like making modpacks for me and my friends to play on), it's nice for kids to play
back when i had this issue consistently what worked for me was using a vpn and changing locations until it worked, but then you are obviously on high ping
When I was using the Bedrock version with my friends. We had a realm for like a year or 2. It was very handy for use. Over time, the console exclusive players dropped off, and we eventually transferred the world to Java edition as we wanted to have some mods and a few features I will say the 3 world slots and backup feature the Realm had was so handy. I have Textile but something about it being able to b fixed in game was perfect
Hi, past realms subscriber here. I recently ended my realms subscription for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is EXTREMELY convoluted to cancel your realms subscription, because there is no “End subscription” button, you have to first stop your server, then you will have to wait until the subscription expires. Secondly, the performance was ABYSMAL (Canadian here, your experience may be different). I regularly got 300+ ping, I would say I have fairly good internet (100+ MBPS), so my connection was not the issue (Keep in mind, this was with a SINGLE player on). This issue worsened whenever multiple friends were playing at once, to the point where it was unplayable for me and my friends. Besides connection issues, we couldn’t have multiple people flying around with elytra’s or the server would crash. I ran this realm, so me and a few friends could easily play some Minecraft together, and what we got was an unplayable mess. Thankfully, if realms didn’t have a backup feature I couldn’t get the world files, the world with 500+ hours on it and all the hard work would be lost. With the world files in hand, I searched for a new server provider and I found one (Bisect hosting). I bought a server, uploaded the files and had the same world ready to go. The server performance was a million times better, and any issues I had were solved by customer support within an hour, support was never something I could get with realms. In summary, I highly suggest that anyone currently paying for a realm STOP NOW, pay for a server that’s the same price as a realm, trust me I’m saving you a headache. Subscribe to TheMisterEpic
Third party always provide better quality to compete with others While realms is a risk free by official minecraft developers themself, because of this they have no reason to upgrades their server or even modify due to many laws/Tos, likely mojang going to treat realm as a way to cash grab + promote mutilplayer
You're not going to get "custom server software" on Realms, that would compromise the entire tightly-controlled setup as well as endorsing mods of their Server Software, which always has been a legal grey area.
Precisely, I think the entire video is kinda unnecessary as it’s mostly just a rant about how you can’t use third party tools on Mojangs own servers. The only part that actually makes sense is the part about not being able to log on and the price of Realms. No idéa if he’s tried contacting Mojang/Microsoft but that’s the first thing i’d do. And we can’t really complain about the pricing, it’s Mojangs pricing and if you don’t feel like paying for it you can just go buy/setup your own community multiplayer server for cheap
The mod compatibility is a good idea, but I not sure if Mojang would be allowed to add them, as most of those mods are open source, while Minecraft is proprietary.
i mean even rockstar, a very greedy company allows gta mod servers. it reallydosent matter if its open source since it dosent affrct mojang in any way. the closed source code of minecraft wont be reveladx if u use a mod
Mojang and Microsoft would never add mod/custom server support to Realms, the reason being that they are modified versions of Minecraft not created or owned by Mojang. They would have no reason to allow users to add their own unofficial server software to run on official Mojang hardware.
The biggest issue with realms for me is their limited gameplay. Try making any scaled or complicated farm and just see how the realm is blocking mechanics that work in vanilla singleplayer. Made a wither farm which ive built before. Only worked with a player in the spawn area in the nether, a player in the overworld transportation section and back in the nether. Then thought „a chunk loader could fix this“ tried multiple ones only to find out that those are being blocked as well. Now i got a nitrado server for less, everything working as intended, fun plugins and quality of life changes. There is no reason to ever go back for me. Oh and also the server doesnt crash frequently resetting progress by 30minutes each time.
CornerHard (The Lead Realms Dev) said in a podcast with ibxtoycat that they are working on client side render distance which would be amazing! As that’s my only issue with MCBE Realms. They are also working on allowing more customization to Realms such as higher simulation distance and more
I recently upgraded to realms plus from a regular realm and microsoft isnt letting me cancel my old one, so now its charging me 12$ a month and we cant fix it because they are doing anything to help.
@bluspringtrap9396 Yea probably, everywhere I go, minecraft realms menu, minecraft website, microsoft subscribtions and services, microsoft purchase history, the internet, microsoft help, nothing works.
You obviously haven't asked microsoft to cancel it and refund. They did that for me when I had the same issue. Maybe try contacting the people who you purchased from before making idiotic comments..
I personally have a very good experience with realms, a couple years ago back in 1.17 I hosted a bedrock realm with my friends and we didn’t have any trouble, we kept the server going and active until 1.19. However, when I tried to kind of revive it and make a new realm, a lot of my friends were unable to join for some reason.
You’re internet provider might be the issue honestly since you can find anyone else with a similar issue. I have Comcast and I’ve had issues playing gta 5 specifically on 3 different platforms and accounts. Weird stuff like that
Definitely a scam. I’ve had nothing but countless errors and complications when trying to use one. Mojang gives us the bare minimum for a server for a ridiculous price.
I've had a Realm for nearly 2 years now and had brilliant performance and almost no issues. The main problems I have is the lack of mod support and version choice.
Realms would instantly be worth it if they allowed mod support. I understand why they don't, mods technically aren't even supported in the main game anyway, and of course we all know Microsoft would never officially add mod support because people would just do that instead of using their shitty storefront. They'll never add/plugin support
In my experience, for just playing with friends, realms is essentially indistinguishable from the other smaller server hosts. Sure, it's not the best option out there, but it will also never be the worst, and that type of consistency makes it a relatively hassle free option.
While hosting a server from an external site is "better" I feel that for a lot of people wouldn't even want to deal with server hosting themselves from these sites, It can be a lot of trouble shooting, and not to mention that you got to keep in mind that not everyone who plays minecraft nowdays are players of 2b2t or are knowledgeable of all 40,000 plugins that all fix the game in their own unique ways. Which is fine of course, but if anything the advanced players are the major minority. Many people play on console with friends, and a realm is quite litterally perfect for that, even on some pcs it can be fine for small groups, we used to do that all the time with very few issues with our crossplay friends on xbox, if you are playing bedrock then you already know what youre getting into I suppose. Also not to mention that I personally always have single issues when setting up servers that cause me to trouble shoot for over an hour to fix one like broken setting and not everyone can just do that. I feel that it would be worth complaining about if the price was like 30 a month or some shit but for simplicity sake I think the current pricing is fine, even if some random dude out there could host it for cheaper themselves. Ive also had issues with some server hosts in the past where the connection was just abysmal and you cant always get your money back from them, an average plkayer probably wouldnt even know where to begin to fix something like that and in my case there was no fix I just had to buy a new server, after trying to upgrade it of course (which didn't fix it and wasted more of my money), though shoutout shockbyte for being just the best one imo.
Minecraft Realms on Bedrock is very handy. As someone who has paid for two realms for over 4 years I don’t regret it. My friends and I have a long term Survival World that’s lasted since 2019 and a Creative World for our ideas and builds before we actually build them in survival. I’d purchase a server if console players could easily connect to it. As some of my friends aren’t tech savvy at all and barely know how to use their console let alone connect to a server in Minecraft when it’s not built in. And CornerHard (The Lead Realms Dev) said in a podcast with ibxtoycat that they are working on client side render distance which would be amazing! As that’s my only issue with MCBE Realms.
@@Plaegu i think the reason that it is so buggy is because they aren't focusing on java as much as they are with bedrock, i'm fairly sure (not 100% sure) they have more teams working on bedrock instead of java probably because it makes them more money (marketplace etc)
@@maxiboy4326 I think you’re right. Bedrock is (for better or worse) the future as Microsoft sees it. As they try to bring as much parity from Java and vice versa. Hopefully one day they can merge more than they already have.
I remember a bunch of my friends having this issue with realms, and the only fix I remember was using a VPN weirdly enough. Needles to say we have never used realms since then.
The not being able to stay on a server problems you had. I had similar issues and this was fixed by changing the default log in save slot and logging into it at least once. Once done you can move back to the first one or leave as is. No idea why this works. But others on various forums have also mentioned it working for them.
the only good part about realms is the simplicity and the hardware, I have played on Bedrock realms, and even when flying and moving are very very very very high speeds the realm is able to keep up
I had no idea that the Java realms were so.... terrible? bullshitty? I don't know to explain. I don't usually play on Bedrock, but my friend paid for a realms on Bedrock Edition (because that's the edition that everyone in the friend group could play, since not everyone had access to Java) and we've been playing for a month now and I've never experienced any technical problems so far. The most that happened was the eventual lag or delay, but that only lasted for some seconds, and the occasional disconnect like, once or twice but that's probably on my side or something like that. Everyone plays on the realm with different devices and everything, and yet nothing like that ever happened. I mean, sure, there's the customization and simplicity problem, but it's not like that isn't already a problem on Bedrock Edition, and none of us actually cared, since we just wanted a normal vanilla game. edit: typo
If all the hardware needs are dynamic, then specs are allocated when needed. If the server needs more RAM, it gets more RAM. If the server needs more CPU, it gets more CPU. So you don't need to know the specs. You get all of the specs the server requires to run. With realms it makes sense to do this as you have large periods of down time. So whatever isn't used, gets cut back. It's oddly brilliant.
AWS also did dynamic allocation, as both Azure and AWS are cloud. Azure is a little more finicky, and when PSO2/NGS (SEGA's MMORPG) first came out on Azure for the west, it was absolutely terrible to connect to, and stay connected.
Another pro and the only reason I use realms is that on console systems like Xbox and PlayStation you are unable to join custom servers. This makes realms the only way to have a server for friends that isn’t one of the featured servers.
I remember back then when Terroriser (Vanoss's friend) start playing mc online for the first time with his friends, he bought mc realm. After less than a week of using it, his comment on the realm quality as "This is so shit"
I've had a Java Realm for probably about 5 years now and have never had much issue with it. The simplicity is great but its also just flat out less intimidating that running a server. I dont have to spend time researching which is the best server host to go with, or how much RAM its going to need, or managing any kind of server files. I boot up the game and all of the configurations are baked right into the menus, and its a button press to launch. Maybe during the earlier days it would have some lag rendering chunks or timing out, but as time went on that became less and less common. Not having mods is the biggest downside for me, but me and my friends always play vanilla anyways so, no big loss there.
I've used realms to run an SMP with friends for years now, and you are absolutely correct. Back when I started the realm, I had no idea how to host a server, so I just chose realms, and it has had many, MANY issues such as the ones you mentioned in the video, disconnecting all users and irreversably reverting the world back about half an hour, terrible server performance (2gb for 2 players? seriously? for the price, i'd want more) and long login times of up to 10 minutes. some of these issues have been prevalent for the entire time I've used realms, and microsoft switching to azure's services didn't really seem to help. i'm sorry to say it, but now with a better understanding of how servers work, it's almost certainly time to switch.
Realms probably use a container system like kubernetes since Azure does provide AKS (Azure Kubernetes Service), and to allow for dynamic allocation, it probably is this as opposed to docker
I'm currently on the free trial and I haven't had any problems with Realms. I really thought that since Mojang hosts them in the country of your choosing, the connection to Realms was perfect for everyone, hence why there is a price to pay for them, until I watched this video.
Tip: you can troubleshoot client-side problems launching Minecraft from Modrinth. It shows a console for your client stuff. If an issue is on your side, it will be there (error code)
Minecraft Realms makes it seem like any other server hosting companies seem like a blessing, I've used Realms once and got frustrated with people randomly disconnecting or the server would run really slow and laggy. I've used every other server hosting like Shockbyte, Apex Hosting, HostHavoc, PebbleHost, etc, and even with the lowest price for the server it ran longer than what my realm did lol. Microsoft has an opportunity with hosting servers but what they offer is bare bones compared to the competitors. Dont buy a realm, even a free alternative is aternos if u just wanna play with a few people, or MineHut is also free lmao.
My friend got a realm for us to play (theirs 3 of us) and when he checked his banks statements it turned out Microsoft was charging him for 3 realms instead of just one for months. This also happened to another one of our buddy’s. Realms is a scam 100%. You also get like 1/3 the render distance on realms then anywhere else and the range at which chunks load and work are DRASTICALLY smaller then normal.
Pre Watch comment here: (Minecraft on a Phone) Based on what the comment section is like, this is probably going to be about the crapiness of Realms. My friend's realm seems to have this odd time range where you can guarentee you won't get kicked, then your chances of getting kicked exponetially increase when out. Really odd and is not a internet problem on my end, so something is going on behind the scenes
I am a fairly dictated Minecraft player, but I still use realms, because of the simplicity, last year I swapped my world from Bedrock to Java, the amount of issues Bedrock had from simply trying to download a world file, I had half my world corrupted.
As someone who has tried for 5 years to negotiate with Mojang on realms being fixed, they are hopeless. They refuse to fix the issue where it kicks everyone and constantly corrupts save files no matter what. They always insist it is a problem on our end and that we all have bad firewalls. Realms are one of the biggest scams in history
I use the realms on bedrock, they are quite cool, as its the only option for a smp server on consoles, also, even when generating massives amounts of new chunks the server doesn't lag, so they're pretty strong, also the world slot arguement doesn't count as you can easily download and upload worlds in a matter of seconds
I got literally scammed by realms Last august i bought a realms membership for bedrock edition on my xbox and i tried to upload my survival world but it kept failing and then i checked it was a bug that was reported in 1.15 and is now fixed on EVERY SINGLE DEVICE except xbox and playstation and the last update on it was a couple of months ago and i guess they won’t try to fix it at this point since they don’t care about consoles anyway
I've tried a few different minecraft servers companies, especially with the idea of running a moded forge world. And it's been absolute trash, constantly being told I'm at or going above my ram limit (10gigs or more at times) because the mods they have are leaking ram and or aren't actually compatible with what there trying to run is insane. Down to a point where my family (6-8 players commonly) has to pick one of our pcs to work as the server host to try and run it instead. The simplesity of basic realms becomes a lot more appealing at that point. Most distance options are actually controlled by the user after they've logged into the realm just by going into your own in-game options. (We do this for my daughter who needs shorter render distance and lower fps) and to access the realms files you just download a backup of that realms and you'll have all the files there to go thrue, then re-upload when done. Ultimately there are some soft forge mods that can be used on realms but there mainly client style ones like map mods. Ultimately I've had more luck running the realms server on Java vs buying one from a server service, as most want to charge out the behind for a basic level of ram needed for the amount of people in my family and for a basic mod packs. Now Bedrock realms suck other then the shear amount of free marketplace content you could use from them.
For anyone who has the tiniest bit of technical knowledge and wants to host a Minecraft server, renting a server from services like Linode is a good idea. Just a clean Linux server where you could host all kinds of things, including Minecraft servers simultaneously and with infinite customizability. Nothing is stopping you. That is how I started and how I do it now.
I had the same problem with it disconnecting me every few seconds, albeit I was in the mountains at the time, but turning on a vpn made it work for me.
I can’t say I’ve had any problems with realms. I run a realm with myself and 4 friends were all on different devices (Xbox, pc, switch etc) and there’s no issues for any of us. There never any lag no matter how big we’ve expanded the server file and it’s a benefit that anyone can log on whenever they want instead of how we were previously doing it
A part of Ulysses: Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him on the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned: -Introibo ad altare Dei. Halted, he peered down the dark winding stairs and called out coarsely: -Come up, Kinch! Come up, you fearful jesuit! Solemnly he came forward and mounted the round gunrest. He faced about and blessed gravely thrice the tower, the surrounding land and the awaking mountains. Then, catching sight of Stephen Dedalus, he bent towards him and made rapid crosses in the air, gurgling in his throat and shaking his head. Stephen Dedalus, displeased and sleepy, leaned his arms on the top of the staircase and looked coldly at the shaking gurgling face that blessed him, equine in its length, and at the light untonsured hair, grained and hued like pale oak. Buck Mulligan peeped an instant under the mirror and then covered the bowl smartly. -Back to barracks! he said sternly. He added in a preacher’s tone: -For this, O dearly beloved, is the genuine Christine: body and soul and blood and ouns. Slow music, please. Shut your eyes, gents. One moment. A little trouble about those white corpuscles. Silence, all. He peered sideways up and gave a long slow whistle of call, then paused awhile in rapt attention, his even white teeth glistening here and there with gold points. Chrysostomos. Two strong shrill whistles answered through the calm. -Thanks, old chap, he cried briskly. That will do nicely. Switch off the current, will you? He skipped off the gunrest and looked gravely at his watcher, gathering about his legs the loose folds of his gown. The plump shadowed face and sullen oval jowl recalled a prelate, patron of arts in the middle ages. A pleasant smile broke quietly over his lips. -The mockery of it! he said gaily. Your absurd name, an ancient Greek! He pointed his finger in friendly jest and went over to the parapet, laughing to himself. Stephen Dedalus stepped up, followed him wearily halfway and sat down on the edge of the gunrest, watching him still as he propped his mirror on the parapet, dipped the brush in the bowl and lathered cheeks and neck. Buck Mulligan’s gay voice went on. -My name is absurd too: Malachi Mulligan, two dactyls. But it has a Hellenic ring, hasn’t it? Tripping and sunny like the buck himself. We must go to Athens. Will you come if I can get the aunt to fork out twenty quid? He laid the brush aside and, laughing with delight, cried: -Will he come? The jejune jesuit! Ceasing, he began to shave with care. -Tell me, Mulligan, Stephen said quietly. -Yes, my love? -How long is Haines going to stay in this tower? Buck Mulligan showed a shaven cheek over his right shoulder. -God, isn’t he dreadful? he said frankly. A ponderous Saxon. He thinks you’re not a gentleman. God, these bloody English! Bursting with money and indigestion. Because he comes from Oxford. You know, Dedalus, you have the real Oxford manner. He can’t make you out. O, my name for you is the best: Kinch, the knife-blade. He shaved warily over his chin. -He was raving all night about a black panther, Stephen said. Where is his guncase? -A woful lunatic! Mulligan said. Were you in a funk? -I was, Stephen said with energy and growing fear. Out here in the dark with a man I don’t know raving and moaning to himself about shooting a black panther. You saved men from drowning. I’m not a hero, however. If he stays on here I am off. Buck Mulligan frowned at the lather on his razorblade. He hopped down from his perch and began to search his trouser pockets hastily. -Scutter! he cried thickly. He came over to the gunrest and, thrusting a hand into Stephen’s upper pocket, said: -Lend us a loan of your noserag to wipe my razor. Stephen suffered him to pull out and hold up on show by its corner a dirty crumpled handkerchief. Buck Mulligan wiped the razorblade neatly. Then, gazing over the handkerchief, he said: -The bard’s noserag! A new art colour for our Irish poets: snotgreen. You can almost taste it, can’t you? He mounted to the parapet again and gazed out over Dublin bay, his fair oakpale hair stirring slightly. -God! he said quietly. Isn’t the sea what Algy calls it: a great sweet mother? The snotgreen sea. The scrotumtightening sea. Epi oinopa ponton. Ah, Dedalus, the Greeks! I must teach you. You must read them in the original. Thalatta! Thalatta! She is our great sweet mother. Come and look. Stephen stood up and went over to the parapet. Leaning on it he looked down on the water and on the mailboat clearing the harbourmouth of Kingstown. -Our mighty mother! Buck Mulligan said. He turned abruptly his grey searching eyes from the sea to Stephen’s face. -The aunt thinks you killed your mother, he said. That’s why she won’t let me have anything to do with you. -Someone killed her, Stephen said gloomily. -You could have knelt down, damn it, Kinch, when your dying mother asked you, Buck Mulligan said. I’m hyperborean as much as you. But to think of your mother begging you with her last breath to kneel down and pray for her. And you refused. There is something sinister in you.... He broke off and lathered again lightly his farther cheek. A tolerant smile curled his lips. -But a lovely mummer! he murmured to himself. Kinch, the loveliest mummer of them all! He shaved evenly and with care, in silence, seriously. Stephen, an elbow rested on the jagged granite, leaned his palm against his brow and gazed at the fraying edge of his shiny black coat-sleeve. Pain, that was not yet the pain of love, fretted his heart. Silently, in a dream she had come to him after her death, her wasted body within its loose brown graveclothes giving off an odour of wax and rosewood, her breath, that had bent upon him, mute, reproachful, a faint odour of wetted ashes. Across the threadbare cuffedge he saw the sea hailed as a great sweet mother by the wellfed voice beside him. The ring of bay and skyline held a dull green mass of liquid. A bowl of white china had stood beside her deathbed holding the green sluggish bile which she had torn up from her rotting liver by fits of loud groaning vomiting. Buck Mulligan wiped again his razorblade. -Ah, poor dogsbody! he said in a kind voice. I must give you a shirt and a few noserags. How are the secondhand breeks? -They fit well enough, Stephen answered. Buck Mulligan attacked the hollow beneath his underlip. -The mockery of it, he said contentedly. Secondleg they should be. God knows what poxy bowsy left them off. I have a lovely pair with a hair stripe, grey. You’ll look spiffing in them. I’m not joking, Kinch. You look damn well when you’re dressed. -Thanks, Stephen said. I can’t wear them if they are grey. -He can’t wear them, Buck Mulligan told his face in the mirror. Etiquette is etiquette. He kills his mother but he can’t wear grey trousers. He folded his razor neatly and with stroking palps of fingers felt the smooth skin. Stephen turned his gaze from the sea and to the plump face with its smokeblue mobile eyes. -That fellow I was with in the Ship last night, said Buck Mulligan, says you have g. p. i. He’s up in Dottyville with Connolly Norman. General paralysis of the insane! He swept the mirror a half circle in the air to flash the tidings abroad in sunlight now radiant on the sea. His curling shaven lips laughed and the edges of his white glittering teeth. Laughter seized all his strong wellknit trunk. -Look at yourself, he said, you dreadful bard! Stephen bent forward and peered at the mirror held out to him, cleft by a crooked crack. Hair on end. As he and others see me. Who chose this face for me? This dogsbody to rid of vermin. It asks me too. -I pinched it out of the skivvy’s room, Buck Mulligan said. It does her all right. The aunt always keeps plainlooking servants for Malachi. Lead him not into temptation. And her name is Ursula. Laughing again, he brought the mirror away from Stephen’s peering eyes. -The rage of Caliban at not seeing his face in a mirror, he said. If Wilde were only alive to see you! Drawing back and pointing, Stephen said with bitterness: -It is a symbol of Irish art. The cracked lookingglass of a servant. Buck Mulligan suddenly linked his arm in Stephen’s and walked with him round the tower, his razor and mirror clacking in the pocket where he had thrust them. -It’s not fair to tease you like that, Kinch, is it? he said kindly. God knows you have more spirit than any of them. Parried again. He fears the lancet of my art as I fear that of his. The cold steel pen. -Cracked lookingglass of a servant! Tell that to the oxy chap downstairs and touch him for a guinea. He’s stinking with money and thinks you’re not a gentleman. His old fellow made his tin by selling jalap to Zulus or some bloody swindle or other. God, Kinch, if you and I could only work together we might do something for the island. Hellenise it. Cranly’s arm. His arm. -And to think of your having to beg from these swine. I’m the only one that knows what you are. Why don’t you trust me more? What have you up your nose against me? Is it Haines? If he makes any noise here I’ll bring down Seymour and we’ll give him a ragging worse than they gave Clive Kempthorpe.
btw, "experimental" features in datapacks such as world generation, structures, custom dimensions, etc are completely disabled. this makes a sizable portion of datapacks (the only way to get relatively "modded" content onto your realm) completely nonfunctional. resource packs also need to be manually installed by everyone using your realm.

yeah
that's really weird I've never seen something like that happen before on my realm
If you’re familiar with port forwarding it even allows you to play online with anybody for free, provided you trust them with your ip.
yeah, assuming lan works. (which it doesnt almost all of the time)
Not always the best option, because LAN requires one person to be online and hosting at all times. If that person does not want to play Minecraft and the others do, well the others are out of luck. With a Realm, it is continuously hosted online for anyone to access regardless of the host's presence.

REAL difficulty is force friends to play -yet again-
As someone who has owned a realm for over 2 maybe even 3 years now, I would say that all of your points in this video are very correct, and I would love if they made those advanced option changes.

During peak hours when we had 8-10 people on the server would occasionally crash and overall be unplayable.

Yeah, they switched to Azure just because it's from Microsoft.
it's ridiculously expensive compared to dedicated hosting though
I actually used an ec2 to make a personal Minecraft server for free and it's mind blowing just how much AWS can do. I was limited to 2gb ram so I can't say much but I can vouch for AWS. They have incredible amounts of customizability. They just left AWS because Microsoft obviously wants them to support Azure so they can say Mojang uses it.
The thing is,for all the cons it has,i would argue that for a small group of friends minehut is a much easier alternative.
but mine hut is generally an awful service if you ask me. It has the stupidest way to connect: go through on server filled with ads and somehow find your server. and even then there is dumb limits like playtime being limited to 1 hour, ads whenever you join, and lots of delays when you join(waiting on another world).
I used free hosters like minehut for ages before one of my friends had good enough internet and enough knowledge to set up one himself.

It's Microsoft. They're the ones who benefit from you buying Realms on console, I think.@@Just_A_Microwave
Additionally, for mods specifically, making people associate Mojang with Curseforge would be horrible.
that, and its probably a bad idea anyway.
a lot of community projects have a stupid amount of drama and Mojang cannot ensure their safety ;)

^This.

"playing on the latest version only"
This is not a Realms only issue, but a bedrock issue.

I havent seen them so can't say anything can you give examples?
"Don't make me give you connection issues ... to the Realm of real life."
Woah, woah. Easy there, buddy.
Hina's hair is a minecraft grass block
Realms seems like an interesting idea, but in practice there's so many better alternatives
That would probably be it, so Mister epic the solution is here above ^
Yeah, its for sure a time-out problem due to packet loss or something along the lines of that. There is a mod that could have solved this issue, but it has to be installed on both the server and client. Just another reason to hate Realms!
It worked fine for me and my friend and we’re both in Australia

I host a server for my friends on my desktop and, while it wasn't the easiest thing to set up, it wasn't that bad either. If you don't need people to be able to connect from outside your home wifi network, it's even easier as you won't have to change router settings. And it's as customizable as it gets while being fully free
I’m not sure if it is the same for realms, but I do know that there is issues with the 1.20.2 server support kicking players.
Man am I glad I went down the rabbit hole of finding free hosts and then learning by myself how to set up plugins, worlds, install server versions and etc.
Seeing this literally hurt my brain, Minecraft needs to work on this.
I was stuck with this exact same issue as you had in the start, nothing fixed it except when I had a vpn running, only then I could join my own realm.
apart from the connection issues, realms seems really good for what it is trying to achieve, I know that as a kid I would have struggled with third party server stuff, and I used realms as a kid. it is really easy for 11 year olds, so I'm happy it exists for that reason alone, even though I do use third parties (I like making modpacks for me and my friends to play on), it's nice for kids to play
Here are free alternatives if needed :
- Hamachi
- Essential
- Alternos
- Hypixel SMP
Have fun !
back when i had this issue consistently what worked for me was using a vpn and changing locations until it worked, but then you are obviously on high ping
When I was using the Bedrock version with my friends. We had a realm for like a year or 2. It was very handy for use.
Over time, the console exclusive players dropped off, and we eventually transferred the world to Java edition as we wanted to have some mods and a few features
I will say the 3 world slots and backup feature the Realm had was so handy.
I have Textile but something about it being able to b fixed in game was perfect
They gotta scam players so they can make a new wood type, you have any idea how difficult it is to count money and write a line of code once a month?

Third party always provide better quality to compete with others
While realms is a risk free by official minecraft developers themself, because of this they have no reason to upgrades their server or even modify due to many laws/Tos, likely mojang going to treat realm as a way to cash grab + promote mutilplayer
@@blackbeast9268but those are not official Rockstar servers, that’s the difference
They are also working on allowing more customization to Realms such as higher simulation distance and more
I hope that's true!
As somebody who just wants to play survival with my friends, realms is a good option. It’s simple to access, and the RAM is great for the price.
I recently upgraded to realms plus from a regular realm and microsoft isnt letting me cancel my old one, so now its charging me 12$ a month and we cant fix it because they are doing anything to help.
That’s just fucking stupid
@bluspringtrap9396 Yea probably, everywhere I go, minecraft realms menu, minecraft website, microsoft subscribtions and services, microsoft purchase history, the internet, microsoft help, nothing works.
You obviously haven't asked microsoft to cancel it and refund. They did that for me when I had the same issue. Maybe try contacting the people who you purchased from before making idiotic comments..
@@PartyhatRSfound the Linux forum mod
@@PartyhatRS Well its been 2 days + and havent heard from microsoft and the realm is still up soooooo
I think Minecraft multiplayer is a great way to learn some real world networking skills if you learn to host your own server.
Just use aternos, that simple for hosting
Minecraft Realms on Java is a scam and so incredibly buggy.

In summer, i was made aware that a superflat realm invited me to join and it was really good... untill it shut down early october
The sad thing is that a lot of this can be implied on Bedrock as well.
I just have amazing memories from realms. They work good enough for a friend group.
8$/Month for 10 people without mods, contained within minimum ram.
They should be paying you 8$ per month.
Can easily confirm: definitely a scam.
Source: I play Bedrock (mobile) and can't even *access* Realms based on my account.
People on bedrock edition: I don’t even have chance! 😥
Pre Watch comment here:
(Minecraft on a Phone)
Based on what the comment section is like, this is probably going to be about the crapiness of Realms.
My friend's realm seems to have this odd time range where you can guarentee you won't get kicked, then your chances of getting kicked exponetially increase when out. Really odd and is not a internet problem on my end, so something is going on behind the scenes
I am a fairly dictated Minecraft player, but I still use realms, because of the simplicity, last year I swapped my world from Bedrock to Java, the amount of issues Bedrock had from simply trying to download a world file, I had half my world corrupted.
lmfao that is my planetminecraft post at the beginning of the video. funny to randomly see it nearly 10 years later.
As someone who has tried for 5 years to negotiate with Mojang on realms being fixed, they are hopeless. They refuse to fix the issue where it kicks everyone and constantly corrupts save files no matter what. They always insist it is a problem on our end and that we all have bad firewalls. Realms are one of the biggest scams in history
chill im already subbed LMAO (i like the "with lots of pressure" subscribe thing)
I got literally scammed by realms
Last august i bought a realms membership for bedrock edition on my xbox and i tried to upload my survival world but it kept failing and then i checked it was a bug that was reported in 1.15 and is now fixed on EVERY SINGLE DEVICE except xbox and playstation and the last update on it was a couple of months ago and i guess they won’t try to fix it at this point since they don’t care about consoles anyway
There never any lag no matter how big we’ve expanded the server file and it’s a benefit that anyone can log on whenever they want instead of how we were previously doing it
A part of Ulysses:
Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stairhead, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed. A yellow dressinggown, ungirdled, was sustained gently behind him on the mild morning air. He held the bowl aloft and intoned:
-Introibo ad altare Dei.
Halted, he peered down the dark winding stairs and called out coarsely:
-Come up, Kinch!
He added in a preacher’s tone:
-For this, O dearly beloved, is the genuine Christine: body and soul and blood and ouns.
He laid the brush aside and, laughing with delight, cried:
-Will he come?
He came over to the gunrest and, thrusting a hand into Stephen’s upper pocket, said:
-Lend us a loan of your noserag to wipe my razor.
Stephen suffered him to pull out and hold up on show by its corner a dirty crumpled handkerchief. Buck Mulligan wiped the razorblade neatly. Then, gazing over the handkerchief, he said:
-The bard’s noserag!
Drawing back and pointing, Stephen said with bitterness:
-It is a symbol of Irish art.
