    Personally I'd vouch for a tier list + railway refraction start, it'll be fun to see you tackle your first railway and see what it's like. The first two railways I'd say were more unique than the third one, but it's still something new for you at least. I also think content-wise a hard MD is basically the same as a normal MD, the real fun comes from seeing reactions to new events and mechanics and stuff, and we have got a video on it already. Of course, I won't complain if you decide to do another MD vid! Canto VI is my personal favourite and I'm looking forward to seeing you tackle it! Thanks for the vids.

    I'm not sure if this a popular opinion or not...but I think the Pequod Trio fight might just my favorite fight in all of Limbus, even with Canto 6 in mind. At least as long as you have someone that can survive Ahab's one-sided assault. I really like the setup of everything building up to this moment, the setup of the fight itself, AND THE MUSIC. Holy crap, that song is so good. Studio EIM really knocked it out of the park with the Pequod Trio's theme. I love the nautical feel of it that captures similar feelings to Terraria's pirate invasion music. So good.
    What I really like about the fight is how Ahab, Starbuck, and Queequeg feel like a traditional party setup of sorts. Ahab's an abusive support, Queequeg's the tank, and Starbuck is a glass cannon DPS. Both fulfill their roles and bounce off each other. And the fight provides both obvious and unobvious cues that help the player figure out how to progress. In my experience, at the end of my second attempt I realized Queequeg effectively had 1500 HP with effectively 1 stagger bar while Ahab only had 650 and came to the conclusion that after Starbuck was done to rush Ahab while ignoring Queequeg. It makes for a really engaging fight even with how rough it can be even after knowing what to do because of clashing. And I'm saying it again, the music. The music is so good.
    Compass is also a really good song and I've certainly listened to it more, but I kind of like Pequod Trio's theme a little bit more. Slightly.
    And the GasHarpoon fight is also great. A small point I'd like to bring up is the animations. If you snowball GasHarpoon you won't get to see most of them, but Ahab is just fun to watch in this phase. Echoing Cries is just so satisfying to watch even when I'm the one getting hit. Ahab charging up, her voice line and the way she says Starbuck's name, lifting the opponent and seeing all the stab effects and the sounds while seeing the -3 SP text appear, it's so good. I'm a bit sad you didn't get to see it for yourself. Maybe you will in Mirror Dungeon Hard.
    Another point I'd like to mention that I'm certainly not the only one going to. Ahab's EGO is very reminiscent of The Claw's Arm. It even uses the Pequod crew like Serum injections. It's really interesting to think about the implications of that. At the very least, EGO is capable of replicating singularities or in this case EGO managed to bootleg Claw technology. And what it could mean for Ahab that her EGO took that form. Sort of like thinking how the Three Birds and Apocalypse Bird represent The Head in some fashion.
    Ahab's fate is nicely done. Taking away the one thing that fueled her entire existence. Killing the Pallid Whale, and leaving her to live a life that has no purpose. Ahab should have turned into a distortion on the spot. Any lesser person would have. But Ahab is so delusional, so steadfast in her twisted believes that she could delude herself into thinking it was still alive and hold on. That bastard has to still be alive somewhere. She even managed to hold onto her own EGO instead of losing it if that's a possibility. Does that make her more pathetic, or more impressive? And for all her talk of how nobody will be the captain of her life, how she's the one in control, it seems she's going to end up serving Hermann and N Corp now. She's no longer the captain of her own life heralded by her own compass like she declared and boasted about.
    Last thing, I like how in the scene with Hermann that Ahab has a generic brown nameplate, but as soon as Hermann mentions the possibility of there being more than one Pallid Whale, Ahab regains her green Captain of Pequod Town nameplate back. Such a small but cool detail.

THERE ARE SO MANY GOOD THINGS ABOUT THIS ONE SCENE. first of all, the fact that ishmail landed the killing blow on the wale, therefore stealing it from ahab, and getting revenge MORE SWEET than what she would get from just letting ahab kill the wale and then get killed.
    then there is ahab's breakdown. oh my god the breakdown. ahab starting to scream to they wale like she was screaming to the Pequod crew, then the end with "you should have killed me!" OH MY GOD THAT IS THE BEST. THAT BASTARD, THAT BITCH GOT THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED TO HER. her life's work, her entire purpose, the thing that would have made her written in history, gone. in a split second, from a goal changed on a whim.

While it is not as massive as the last one (almost 30 fights to grab full rewards was definitely an experience), this Railway can still take some time, so splitting it up between 2 videos should turn out fine. Congrats on beating Canto 5, even with all the twists and turns the last few fights have given you, you've done splendidly with just the Pequod crew. Now we can begin overhyping Canto 6, one of my favourite narrative experiences, the peakest peak of Limbus, true cinema, 9 out of 10 british people recommend it (the last one got shanked), anyone who doesn't agree gets sent to the gallows.

      Hold up, I actually really like this theory

  • @Birthday888
    @Birthday888 25 днів тому +35

    I think the expectation of "loving" every sinner by the end of the story is a bit unreasonable? Some characters are just going to resonate with people more than other based of their own preferences for people they like. I think aiming for "Okay" or "Good" for every single sinner is much more realistic at the end of the day. So I think your opinion on Ishmael is perfectly fine in my book, Foreman XD.
    I do disagree with placing Canto 4 over 5? Granted, I do like Ishmael more than you Foreman, so there will doubtlessly be some bias here on my part, but I do genuinely think Canto 5 is more technically sound than 3 or 4.
    While the Mirror Dungeon sections of Canto 4 and 5 are peak, and are very hard to place one over the other for me, the Part 1 and 2 sections of Canto 4 are where I feel it struggled the most and where it falls behind Canto 5. The Technology Liberation Alliance and Rosespanner/Shrenne parts of the story don't really add much to the story, aside from giving a brief glance into Dongbaek's beliefs about technology. We don't really get much insight into Yisang's mental state either, aside from a few brief statements from him that tell us he is suicidal.
    Compare that to Canto 5's Part 1 and 2s. We see exactly what Ishmael's issues are and why she needs to overcome this flawed part of her personality. The Twinhooks give Ishmael the opportunity to showcase her blind and reckless obsession with revenge and Pilot shows her discomfort with leadership gaslighting their subordinates into sacrificing themselves. Then, the encounters on the Lake showcase her lack of initiative and the traits she's subconsciously emulating from Ahab, and Ricardo provides cool bits of worldbuilding about the Middle (that will later become relevant for Queequeg).
    The Indigo Elder is also a cool foil for Ahab and Ishmael, as he pursues the Calamities in order to test his own strength and even respects them as worthy adversaries, whereas Ahab and Ishmael are driven by an all-consuming, trauma-filled obsession for revenge. And yet, in the end, it is the Elder/Ishmael who fells the Calamities and not Ahab.
    I feel like every event that happens in Ishmael's Canto adds something to the overall story, whereas I feel like there are large sections in Yi Sang's where things happen, but don't really contribute to the story the Canto is trying to tell about Yi Sang, Dong Baek and Dong Rang.

    • @DemPop
      @DemPop 25 днів тому +8

      I do agree that Canto 5 is miles above any previous canto when it comes to gameplay and presentation, the pacing, the amount of fights and their challenge, for sure - but actual emotional resonance is always subjective.
      It's very interesting to me to read your final paragraph, because my experience was the exact opposite. I adore Yi Sang and his old buddies, Dongrang was such a blast all the way through to me, and I felt like the story was focused on Yi Sang from the very beginning.
      In Canto 5, I felt like we didn't really get into the meat of Ishmael's whole deal until the very end of Part 2, and we got most of Ishmael exposition during the dungeon - we even met the primary antagonist only in Part 3, as well, whereas Dongrang's snarky, smug ass was following us through the entirety of C4.
      The big challenge at the end of Part 2 of C5 was Ricardo, a guy who had more to do with Heathcliff than Ishmael, and comparing that to something as emotional and personal as Dongbaek's fight... My favor falls with Dongbaek easily. Even if the Ricardo fight was much better as an actual gameplay challenge.
      It's why I can't really do tierlists or give a ranking to every canto - especially not now after Canto 6 came out (it's the fucking best).

    • @Birthday888
      @Birthday888 23 дні тому +3

      @@DemPop From my point of view, Dongrang is with us for Part 1 and 2, but he only gets any sort of depth in Part 3 once his backstory and internal struggles are made apparent to us. Before that point, he's snarky and smug, yes, but none of his behavior really gives any focus to his conflict with Yi Sang or his own internal struggles with his past and his current path, aside from the single conversation he has with Yi Sang in Part 1 in the chicken room. He's just an asshole, corporate scientist until Part 3, though an enjoyable antagonist.
      Yi Sang is barely in Parts 1 and 2, unfortunately. We don't even see his reaction to Dongrang and Dongbaek's confrontation at the end of Part 2. While Part 3 places his silence into a new context with his flashbacks, it does mean that Parts 1 and 2 barely showcase Yi Sang's story and struggles. I think the story would have benefited from more mini-metaphorical flashbacks focusing on Yi-Sang like we got with Ishmael throughout the Canto, rather than just the singular one we got with him at the beginning of Part 2.
      Similarly for Dongbaek, I would agree when taking into account the entire story as a whole, Dongbaek is far more relevant to Canto 4 than Ricardo is to Canto 5. The problem is, again, that the significance of Dongbaek confronting Dongrang and the emotional attachment Yi Sang has to both people is something that is only shown to the audience after the fight in Part 3. And we only get a total of 2 scenes with her before she dies.
      From a narrative sense, Dongbaek is closer to Queequeg than Ricardo, and I think the usage of Queequeg was far better executed than Dongbaek because we built up an emotional connection with her and understood Ishmael's connection to her before her subsequent death.

    We now have two intervals before Canto 6 which is currently my favourite. Heathcliff is easily my favourite character out of the sinners. But Canto 5 is also great, project moon from Canto 5 onwards really seems to have figured out how to pace the cantos. And the world building and atmosphere of the great lake is fantastic. Ishmael also wasn't my favourite but she's well written and it's really satisfying seeing her make a better choice at the end. Also this Canto actually made me like outis a bit more because she has some really comical moments.

    CANTO V was better than all the others previously and I'm not even a big fan of Ishmael, CANTO VI is my fav tho. I would recommend doing the Refraction Railway next as I'm not sure how much longer the Line will be open, also its balanced for Lvl 40 characters so you should do it before your characters go over lvl 40. Also there are a lot of good rewards to get in the event, that will be helpful to get your next team ready for the next canto.

  • @dd-nj3eu
    @dd-nj3eu 24 дні тому +6

    It's interesting. I was not super on Ishmael before this canto. However, looking back on the things she did and how she behaved before, getting the know how on why she acted as she did did make her into one of my favorites. I find her bitchyness all the more understandable, considering she appears to actually care a good bit about all the sinners and Dante. It comes off as not great in the moment, yet it comes from a good place regardless. To me, that's enough.
    But as others have commented, there's no reason why everyone has to like the same characters the same way. At least we can agree on them being well enough written.
    (I, for one, disliked Don for quite a long time and still am pretty iffy on her even now.)
    That aside, congrats on beating the whole thing with that team. I honestly didn't think it would work out, considering how hard that one fight against the three stooges was, but you got there with only a couple tries. Impressive.
    Looking forward to more, as usual. Also looking forward to more System Shock, if you ever go back to that. Just as a side note.

    Was very shocked that you have less positive opinion on Canto 1 and 3 than Canto 2 lmao, imo Canto has almost no stake compared to all other Canto and thus less actions and emotional beats, and absolutely no arc or change. If your feeling on Canto 5 was what it is because you just wanted to get through it, i think you are depriving yourself of enjoying Cantos. My suggestion is just to focus on what the Canto is trying to provide you rather than having preplanted notion of the opinions of said character influence what you feel. I did not like Yi Sang pre Canto because of how he was passive and one note but evidently his Canto provided him with his backstory and deserved closure that evolves his character to be more involved (as you can see in later Cantos that he is not a reclusive person anymore), and Canto 4 is my favourite. But if your opinion still stands, i respect it. Good vid!

While the pacing is better here and there's still some great emotional moments, Canto 4 just hits me harder emotionally (and well, by this point Yi Sang is very much my favorite so I can't say I'm not looking back at it with some bias too).
    I'm not surprised you don't feel all that different about Ishmael (as of this video). I honestly would've been surprised if you had changed your opinion so drastically already based on how you said you felt about her throughout the Canto.

    Honestly idm that ur opinion on ishmael hasnt changed even though she is my favorite character! I think its abt the relatability of each character, with ishmael i loved her character due to dealing with lots of truama in my past especially as a woman, seeing a woman be as well written and imperfect and angry really resonated with me, but if you cant relate to her struggles in anyway i can see how incredibly frustrating it can be to see someone stuck. 51:50 Wow they nerfed this fight HARD, back when i did this fight Ahab was basically guaranteed to get her Prey Mark skill off at least once but most likely twice and that skill is ROUGH, basically once she uses that skill to Mark one of your IDs she will focus them with all of her attacks Next Turn, meanwhile you cannot target *or* clash with her because Queequeg will redirect ALL attacks targeting Ahab to herself AND she has a very scary counter, and if Starbuck is still alive he'll hit you with his strongest attacks too.
    The way you're *Supposed* to deal with the one-sided attacks is either by nuking Ahab into phase 2 immediately so Queequeg doesn't redirect at all, or by First: Making sure someone with an Evade is the target of Ahab's Prey Mark attack the previous turn, and Second: to activate the Evade on Starbuck's fasted attack first so it gets Reused against Ahab's one-sided attacks since Ahab has fixed 1 speed during that turn and Queequeg *Doesn't* redirect attacks against Starbuck, only Ahab. You'll need this information if/when you do Refraction Railway 3.
    The way *i* beat it however was by cheesing it with K Corp Hong Lu, he's Pierce Ineffective and with Dimension Shredder Passive *also* becomes Pride ineffective *and* gets a free revive so he can tank her whole onslaught even in the Railway version of this fight.
    Speaking of Railway, You should definitely go do that ASAP because we'll be getting Railway 4 very soon and you'll need to clear all of Canto 6 for that.
    1:30:25 God that scene always makes me tear up, so god damn beautiful.
    Also GOD DAMN Ahab's VA absolutely killed it with her performance, she did such an amazing job this whole Canto and Ishmael's VA has a fantastic singing voice too!
    As for my final thoughts: Canto 5 Immediately became my favorite Canto after i beat it (Until Canto 6 took that spot), i ADORE the psychological aspect of watching Ishmael deteriorate and spiral the entire time, helpless to stop her own emotions and fears from controlling her in the face of FINALLY confronting the one who took everything she ever cared about from her, and everyone else can only helplessly watch as she becomes more and more self-destructive with no way to help her, which also leads to fantastic character growth for Dante. And that entire final scene is SO INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL i could never do it justice with words.
    Very interested to hear your opinions once you've collected your thoughts Manager Esquire, and good luck if you do decide to do Railway next.

    I was never the biggest fan of Ishmael (I'm something of an Outist you see), so this Canto is definitely not my personal favorite either. Between the two gears in the team that've always ground against each other, I've always liked Heathcliff more, so his Canto is definitely my favorite until Outis' comes out (it's also just so so PEAK). I hope that, once you get to it, you enjoy that wild ride.
    Some other things to say, hmm. I guess you can do Pride MD Packs now, considering you've faced Gasharpoon. Still gotta watch out for anything related to future Cantos and Intervallos. Regardless, you'll pull through any challenge~ (considering you can always retry every fight until you win, just as the founding resurrection clocks intended~) Good luck with whatever you decide to pursue to the end first! Personally, its way better to fail the check in the middle of the Ahab fight, and using the Ahab ID kinda ruins the best bit of Dante dialogue in the game so far.
    If you lose the check, Dante actually gives Ishmael a really, really powerful couple of lines, and I highly encourage you to look it up online. The fight was heavily nerfed soon after it was released and its hard to fail that check now, and it makes the rest of the fight feel more hollow when I watch other players do it without failing first.

    Don't get me wrong Canto 4 got its fair share of obvious problems but the third part got me real emotional. For me 4 has the lowest lows and highest highs while 5 was more 'consistent' all the way through. Canto 6 is still my personal favorite but I'm extremely biased towards Heath and Meursault. For me it goes more 6>4>5>3>2>1

That said I respect your choice. • @ItsDresso

    Honestly, I really didn't like this Canto, mostly because of the wasted potential I think it had. It was all over the place in the first part, making Ishmael feel like she was irredeemably angry (which was the point). Then everything from entering the LobCorp branch to entering the whale is great. It's new, it's interesting, it creates good hype, and Ishmael's VA does a great job. Then comes the drop, not in the hype way, but in the quality way.
    The story inside the whale is at best uninspired, and at worst nonsensical. Ishmael "finds" her way by losing it once again and letting go of all of her apparently irredeemable hatred instantly and for no apparent reason, and it all culminates in the exact same way as Canto IV.
    The moment I heard the Mili song not really starting, like in Canto IV, I perfectly predicted what was going to happen after that. And instead of a beautiful, tear-jerking moment like in IV, it was a "yeah, yeah, I get it" at the end.
    Honestly, I have the very biased opinion that PM agrees with my opinion, with them later delaying Canto VI to rewrite parts of the story and then making it by far the most unique Canto, including a lot of story elements that people hoped would happen in V. And that just makes me dislike V even more, because of all the wasted potential again. We could've had an insanely good story focused on Wrath like Yi Sang's was on Sloth, and instead we got a mild anticlimax as a conclusion. The events of the story are fine, but the way we reached them was very very bad and a sign of lack of time in my opinion, echoed by the immediate announcement after they released this last part that future cantos would not have a specific release date

    • @grapesonvines4407
      @grapesonvines4407 24 дні тому +7

      Mandatory disclaimer that you're entitled to your opinions and all that, but I'm really not sure how you could find Canto 6's story 'nonsensical'. I think the story does a great job at separating Ishmael's hatred, a justifiable feeling to hold toward Ahab, and her *obsession*, the thing that's slowly turning her into another Ahab. Ishmael still very much hates Ahab by the end of the story- not killing her isn't Ishmael forgiving her, it's instead Ishmael doing what Ahab never would've, choosing not to kill her 'whale' as a testament to choosing to chart her own path. I personally found the multi-layered metaphors the story sets up immensely satisfying to dissect- I just wish the story didn't go out of its way to be so blatant about it sometimes, and I think the story has a lot of interesting things to say about leadership, obsession, goals, and trauma.
      A lot of people smarter than me have talked about how a story being predictable isn't a fault- it is a criticism initially levied at mystery novels and whodunnits, and using it against more standard narratives doesn't really make sense- Canto 6's story isn't trying to surprise you, and I found its ending no more predictable than the fact that I knew we'd make it out of the whale at the end or that Ahab would be the final boss.

    • @ItsDresso
      @ItsDresso 24 дні тому

      @@grapesonvines4407 Oh I agree with the metaphors and such, I didn't say it wasn't well set up, I just said I didn't like the execution. I think Ishmael realizes her obsession and its nature too easily, and overcomes it too easily too.
      About the predictability, I don't take offense at predicting the story beats, what I didn't like was predicting the game design, the sequence at the end that just reused the Canto 4 sequence.
      Again, I don't think it's a bad Canto by any means, I just think it took one of the most famous, most intense depictions of wrath in all of literature, in a setting in which strong emotions maniphest physically, and then did basically nothing new and interesting with it.
      I do have to say, I care a lot about endings and that sequence being so similar to the other one probably made me very biased. I think if this canto had gone before Yi Sang's, I would've liked it more. I also probably overhyped myself with the screaming before entering the whale and the "white whale holy grail" song.
