I love the way Melissa plays magic. She doesn't flick her cards like a nut. She just sets them on the table & calmly looks at her opponent & looks at the table. She just sits there. That's gotta drive players nuts - lol. It's great to see girls in the pro tour too.
Wow, as a returning player I look at this and thinK: "Wow, that was standard a few years past?! Amazing." Looks almost like they would play modern. I don't play standard, but this looks fantastic.
Manabases were solid and the decks were pretty powerful. Shocklands, Snapcaster Mages, Restoration Angel's, Boros Charms, and Supreme Verdicts make this almost Modern lite.
Yeah, 1:38:14 you can tell Melissa DeTora realized her mistake right when Martell untapped the Thragtusk. Definitely a game changer. Wish I could've seen game 5.
0:32:45 I can't believe Eric didn't call Owen on the unsleeved card. That was really disrespectful! He should have at least put the card back in the sleeve.
@@abusus75 I think it's because he hadn't determined whether to transform it or not yet. The announcers said they're good friends so that's probably why he did it so casually. Or he was just really salty lol.
This was imo the greatest standard era ever. The decks were competitive and well balanced against each other. The cards were just a little over the top in power to make it interesting but not crazy broken. The games were fun to watch and very interactive. The mana made it so you could experiment and play basically anything you wanted. The creatures were on par with the spells in terms of power. The sets had value. Great cards that have seen play in eternal formats since their printing. The limited format was awesome through all of these sets and blocks. Even the art and lore were awesome. Such a fun time to play magic. Today’s sets don’t even come close in any way. How far this game has fallen

You clearly are confused on this subject. Farseek can search for a Plains, Island, Mountain, or a Swamp. The dual lands you are bringing into question here clearly state on the card they are a Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and / or Forest. For example Hallowed Fountain is a "Land - Plains Island" This is a perfectly legal target for Farseek. Therefore when lands like Glacial Fortress comes into play untapped it is because Hallowed Fountain is both a Plains and an Island. Hope that this helps!
That was really great play from Melissa and Tom, they both definitely proved they deserved to be here (Melissa more so with all the controversy behind the special invites.)
I didn't know the differences of the pro tours and grand prix I thought they where the same things. I went to pro tour toronto it was a blast went 4-5 with a jank deck but met a few pros but this level of play is awsome some day i wanna be in there seats
Damn thinking about it i just looked at the cast of this top 8 and it might be the most stacked top 8 I've ever seen Ben s Owen efro Joel Larsson Martell detora mann and gerry pretty crazy if you think about it
I will be so sad when Champion of the Parish retires. He has served his parish well... and will continue to serve them in his post retirement career in modern, casual etc
At 1:37:45 why didn't Melissa use the Azorius Charm on her Thragtusk in response to Zealous Conscripts coming into the battlefield? She gets the beast token (instead of it going to Tom) and Tom doesn't get to block with Thragtusk and the Thragtusk still ends up on top of her deck
Close to 24 mins wasn't Tom supposed to draw the arristocrat from the top deck since Melissa used the azorius charm to put it on the top of the deck?? lol
there was a mis-play not caught by the judges in game one of melissa and tom, she azorius charmed his falkenrath aristocrat and he put it in his graveyard, he was suppose to put it on top of his library.
I don't know if it's necessarily dorky, though it is a look that's gotten a lot of mileage out of dorks. I'd put it on the same shelf as sasy, graphic tee shirt under open button down collared shirt. Joel Larson is my pick here for best dressed though, it was like he new he was going to be recorded that day so he got a haircut!
At 1:07:10 LSV says Mann can't take the Jace via Duress even if he wanted to. Since Planeswalkers aren't creatures, and Duress says you can make them discard a non land non creature card, then Planeswalkers are fair game, right?
I guarantee he was playing around Azorius Charm. It was a 4 of in the UW based decks of this era and has a mode that allows you to place an attacking (or blocking) creature on top of its owner’s library. Getting your DRS tucked there would be really bad.
I already knew that about Glacial Fortress, Hallowed Fountain, etc.. that state that but I've watched people on twitch use it to search for Non-basic lands that didn't have that in their type.
In this case I’m guessing she was playing around Orzhov Charm’s “destroy target creature” mode. If she just pumps all out there, he could blunt her attack. But getting in a non-lethal amount of damage and leaving up the counterspell in her hand pretty much locks it up, just a turn later.
32:42 The way that Turtenwald rudely grabs Froehlich's Garruk, unsleeves and flips it to read it, then just tosses it back Idk why it took a sexual harassment scandal for the community to realize that this dude was toxic
The tusk is already hers, I think you mean Martell, she should have charmed the Tusk while it was in her side, you even hear her saying in a bit of surprise "Oh! It untaps?"
Yeah, but that's "one reason" why they do it. I play against people all the time who do it. I just sit there & try my best to ignore it & stay focused. If I start getting irritated at the way they're playing, that only hurts me. I got some good tips watching Melissa. Basically, stay focused, no matter what : )
alot of pros do it to hide information from your opponent, like hiding which card you just drew, or which card you've been sandbagging, at least that's what they say
32:40 Turtenwald had to read that Garruk?? wow you could tell he wasn't at his best yet in this tournament. A couple of years after this he would be one of the top 3 players in the world.
Nobody else notice that azorious charm didn't actually put the Falkenrath Aristocrat on top of Tom Martell's library and instead he put that card into his graveyard during Game 1 at 20:41 ? He should have never been able to draw a land card the following turn. I'm surprised she didn't catch this and also that no judges saw this, especially on a ProTour match...
oh ok, it confused me cuz the commentators were saying it got charmed so it goes back on top then its sittin there in the graveyard, the commentators need to keep up with whats goin on
Yeah, she played an extra land, probably by accident. It was on like turn 2 of extra turns and it made no difference in the game because it wasn't used for anything. She already had like 17 lands in play anyways,
the little hand cycle? That aggrevates the hell out of me with the noises during magic games. like keep your hand in one spot, stop making noises, if you need to do something with your hands get a stress ball.
Even the commentators explained how hard his deck is to play. Too many creatures, too many interactions, too many possibilities for attacks, blocks, etc.
I love going back and watching these tournaments.
it was peak MTG. The game was incredible back then.

"Lemme just reach out, grab your card, rip it out of the sleeve, and toss it back to you unsleeved I'm a pro player" - Owen Turtenwald, 32:45
For real, something felt pretty disrespectful about that.
Just a bad person
He's an A-hole IRL. I even rejected a feature match in Montreal because I was supposed to play against him
don't forget not even reading the front side properly then misplaying olivia like a noob and lose horribly

Played it on a Bloodcrypt which is a swamp mountain. A. you can play dual lands off shockland. B you can search for it with Farseek.
You clearly are confused on this subject. Farseek can search for a Plains, Island, Mountain, or a Swamp. The dual lands you are bringing into question here clearly state on the card they are a Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and / or Forest.

Yes, you cast revelation while duress is on the stack and revelation resolves before duress because it was last on the stack.
Never seen Owen Turtenwald play as bad as he did in that 3rd match, the Olivia and Arbor Elf together was a massive missplay.
