Man I love watching this Pro Tour, I remembered when Aristocrats was a funky idea many people had thought of and then Sam Black has the epiphany of the year. The deck made me win many games of magic, and inspired my modern BR sacrifice deck that has dominated every one of my friends. Keep up the good work WotC, creating the ability to have decks like this will make many people frustrated and filled with glee for years to come.
I miss the Innistrad RTR standard from before m14 soooo much. We had perfect mana, unlimited room to brew, and a power level that makes current standard look like a bunch draft decks. Wizards please try and make a format like that this upcoming year.
What about Innistrad/RTR WITH M14 ? Young Pyromancer gave birth to one of the craziest (Standard) decks of recent memory, the Burn at the Stake combo deck - and actually made it work !
I can't rewatch this without feeling a shiver on my spine, Return to Ravnica Era brings such a heavy nostalgia; this Standard was so good its difficult to explain.
What dmbb1239 said, plus the fact that they probably don't want to have the televised coverage of the finals marred by the visual distraction of personal favorite playmats. It's not being televised for funsies -- they want to make sure the table is clean/clear for the viewers. Solid orange/yellow help the cards pop. I'd hazard a guess that as cool as a lot of playmats look, about 95% of them would make it a little tough to see the board clearly from the overhead camera.
Why were there no Junk Rite decks in the Top 8? Just curious. Is it because the sideboards all contain cards like Rest in Peace? Is it because of Blue counter spells?
im confused, at 39:51, martell only had 1 blocker. so he wouldve gone down to 2, and then he wouldve been pillared. wouldnt that mean larsson wins? am i missing something?
yeah im pretty sure that the defending player gets priority somewhere between blockers being declared and combat damage happening. they both do actually.
They are using dual lands. These players use heavy multicolored decks heavy on utility, so they need as little land as possible. Each land card they have on the field represents two different types of mana, and can be tapped for either type the land represents.
Rules question, please. At 38:40, how does Tom put another +1/+1 on Aristocrat by sacrificing Champion of the Parish? Can you sacrifice a creature after you've declared it as a blocker? I thought combat damage would happen before you could sacrifice any of your cards.
I have recently started to play Magic the Gathering and I'm just curious about why I don't see any land cards being played on the table and the players are playing cards that require mana. Please answer if you can
It's specifically to use on his own Boros Reckoners, as he's a control deck, he'll go through his deck relatively quickly, and many cards end up in the graveyard, it's not uncommon for there to be up to 15/20 spells there, in a drawn out game, the Reckoner will become a gigantic lifeswing that way, quite a bit of good tech.
That first game, there was a point where Larsson just got Martell to 7 and had a snap caster, Searing Spear, and Boros Charm with 6 mana open, all the right colours, and Martell was tapped out. Why didn't he end it there? I was yelling at him like "doesnt matter what's in his hand, he cant play it!"
it's any card game man. the closest thing to an answer i got is that their opponent might see or memorize the position of their cards, which doesn't make a lot of sense. i know in most card games there are abilities to let you see and sometimes choose from your opponents hands, but that doesnt mean you'd need to constantly fuck around with your cards.
guys, the foundry wasnt what dealt him damage, it was the champion of the parish. the silverblade swung with the champion, Joel killed the silverblade, he took the 2 from the parish
can Wizards stop putting the names of who's in the finals in the name of the Video? it kinda kills the suspense of watching the others if i just look at the related videos.........
As you saw right after, Larsson flashed in Restoration Angel. Were he to have attacked with only one token, he'd have lost that with no damage to Larsson. With two attackers he loses the token and still gets 1 damage in.
51:00 You can see the look on his face after he stops talking that says 'oh crap, I just said 2003 didn't I?' I think that's the second time he's done that now.
Not really. If you think about it... He had 3 aristocrats. Joel was drawing blanks, He simply had just a faster way to deal damage. Especially since Tom ended up drawing a cavern. So even getting a dissipate off that augur would have been no help. Just my opinion IMO.
The thing was I think that he was hoping to use the Pillar on the Aristocrat which was putting in work. But sadly if anything Tom could just sac a human to make it indestructible. GOD I LOVE HIS DECK!!!
Boros rules. Especially reckoner. Pulled 3 so far. Worth 20 something a piece. But I run an awesome Boros deck. Also pulled Aurelia the war leader and 4 spark troopers. Yea! Tom deserved that win. And scarfs are cool. I don't care who you are.
Just before the Obzedat came in there was an attack with both the Champion and the Traveler, and the Champion was speared and he took the damage from the traveler.
This would be better with letting us hear the players, and pop up cameras in the corner showing us their hand. Commentators are often pretty annoying, mostly when they talk over the actual players conversations
thank you very much. ahaha I just purchased a booster pack that had one of those and was like wtf that's what they were playing, also managed to pull a nicol bolas planeswalker somehow that was a lucky booster pack.
this standard is still my absolute favorite of the past few years.
TheMagicManSam definitely feel the same, fell off with theros, and starting to come back with khans
So many of the cards from this standard found their way to modern. That Pro Tour was great to watch, and I don't even play standard.
That Boros Reckoner was the sh*t
this then abzan midrange with rhino such good years it really makes the current standard truly unenjoyable.

these decks are seriously tenfold better than what standard has to offer this season. I rewatch these games in envy!

TWO YEARS, LATER, SOI!
+Torvak Mendelek Very very late to ask this, but would you possible explain that?
I love having Luis commentating on the match! He adds great insight into the plays and possibilities at each stage of the game.
When they zoomed out and we see Larsson just sitting there at 0:51:15 I just burst out laughing.. That's just awesome
I can't rewatch this without feeling a shiver on my spine, Return to Ravnica Era brings such a heavy nostalgia; this Standard was so good its difficult to explain.
38:20 LSV's epic pun gets completely ignored T.T
LSV commentating got me to watch this. And he delivered! Please keep him doing it!
You can watch it now though, which is what's great about recorded video.

Because pillar of flame is a sorcery. In order to cast a spell in the middle of combat it needs to be an instant or have flash, like Snapcaster.
Is that Eric Levine judging? I was wondering why I didn't see him during Gatecrash Prerelease in the Bay Area.
Why were there no Junk Rite decks in the Top 8? Just curious. Is it because the sideboards all contain cards like Rest in Peace? Is it because of Blue counter spells?
That was a great final! both deserved to be there
I know, right? I only know this because i had to look it up after bloodrush was announced to see what responses could be made to it.
LSV needs to commentate on every match, best most knowledgeable play by play ever!!!
im confused, at 39:51, martell only had 1 blocker. so he wouldve gone down to 2, and then he wouldve been pillared. wouldnt that mean larsson wins? am i missing something?

LSV is a nice guy to listen to, knows his stuff and analyzes well.
Rules question, please. At 38:40, how does Tom put another +1/+1 on Aristocrat by sacrificing Champion of the Parish? Can you sacrifice a creature after you've declared it as a blocker? I thought combat damage would happen before you could sacrifice any of your cards.

the winner of a Pro tour
I agree with this, LSV's commentating was spot on and very entertaining. I wouldnt mind him always doing it...
Welcome to the community!
thanks
He plays sacred foundry towards the end of Tom's turn, before drawing. Draws a card, then lays a clifftop retreat.
He did that in Pro Tour Return to Ravnica.
adding Luis scott vargas really added to the commentary, thanks wizards.

Feel bad for Larsson. He drew so many lands when he need one or two action cards.
Cool guy in the fendora at 9:32 is wearing a Golgari shirt. I was begining to think no-one at the pro tour liked Golgari.
I hope they bring in LSV a lot more often. It's much nicer hearing him give insight over Hagon's drivel.
tom's one of my favorite players for the simple fact that he doesn't shuffle his hand constantly.
why didnt joel larsson use pilar of flame in game two to kill the spirit that was blocking the thunder,aw in order to swing for lethal?
So, in game three, why didnt joel pillar the aristocrat main phase two, forcing tom to sac the reckoner or let the aristocrat be exiled?
i think a reprint of force spike might be good for standard to be reprinted. Probably won't be though
in game three at the end why didn't Joel pillar the doomed traveler then attack?
2003???
We have to go back...
anyone else catch the dude at the end telling us to join him in 2003?
That first game, there was a point where Larsson just got Martell to 7 and had a snap caster, Searing Spear, and Boros Charm with 6 mana open, all the right colours, and Martell was tapped out. Why didn't he end it there? I was yelling at him like "doesnt matter what's in his hand, he cant play it!"
Great deck, great shell. Won a game day in Astrakhan with it😎
anyone knows the name of the very first opening scene music please?
hold on to your dual lands (or any land that makes two/three colors of mana) as they are very versatile.
So i started to pick up the aristocrats, can anyone tell me what Tom Martell takes out against tom and what he brings in ?
hey tom I'm sorry for your brother oberyn
ravnic zahl i see what you did there
it's any card game man. the closest thing to an answer i got is that their opponent might see or memorize the position of their cards, which doesn't make a lot of sense. i know in most card games there are abilities to let you see and sometimes choose from your opponents hands, but that doesnt mean you'd need to constantly fuck around with your cards.
why do the players keep shuffling their cards while holding them?
guys, the foundry wasnt what dealt him damage, it was the champion of the parish. the silverblade swung with the champion, Joel killed the silverblade, he took the 2 from the parish

Thanks for clarifying that!

Where the hell is Semis and Quarter!??!
Is volume soft for anyone else?
any sleeves but ultra pro are pretty good.
great comeback from Tom on game 3rd !!
what is the opening music please?
I don't know why Tom attacks with both tokens at 4:00. He got the exalted from Knight of infany so he just should attacked with one of them.
51:00 You can see the look on his face after he stops talking that says 'oh crap, I just said 2003 didn't I?'
I think that's the second time he's done that now.
He played the Sacred Foundry at 20:02, and untapped it at 20:27
Not really. If you think about it... He had 3 aristocrats. Joel was drawing blanks, He simply had just a faster way to deal damage. Especially since Tom ended up drawing a cavern. So even getting a dissipate off that augur would have been no help. Just my opinion IMO.
Why are the players not using playmats? Are you not allowed to and if so, why?
standard?
The thing was I think that he was hoping to use the Pillar on the Aristocrat which was putting in work. But sadly if anything Tom could just sac a human to make it indestructible. GOD I LOVE HIS DECK!!!
wow, after pro tour RTR he actually said 2003 when mentioning pro tour gatecrash...he needs to update his cards haha
She played an extra land while using a farseek pretty sneakily. It could have been a mistake but..
seems like people wearing scarfs always win the second pro tour of the season (Brian Kibler and now Tom Martell)
I still haven't bought a Gatecrash deck. :I
#AristocratsFaveDeckEverNotClose
^^Sarcasm. Did notice I wrote :"BTW" before I said "By The Way"?
"I really think Martell needs to win the first game"
loses first game, goes 3-0 afterwards.
u wot m8
idk but 18:19 when did gabe newell become a mtg judge? lol
2003?
Thank you :)
Martel's face when the guy said 2003. He's just like clap it out lol
That's a fabulous f**king scarf.
y didnt joel block first with the snap caster in the forth game first then flash back sering spear i know it little but little things mean alot
joel in the 3rd game attacked with the 1/3 instead of just the 5/5 FLYING like i dont understand y he attacked with both did he have too??
Boros rules. Especially reckoner. Pulled 3 so far. Worth 20 something a piece. But I run an awesome Boros deck. Also pulled Aurelia the war leader and 4 spark troopers. Yea!
Tom deserved that win. And scarfs are cool. I don't care who you are.
well we just need to go and start our tardis then. problem is that not all have one
Yeah at pro tour RTR. Look at the ending of the finals :P
What are you talking about?
I love it how Luis is made to sit through a commercial of another card store!
Just before the Obzedat came in there was an attack with both the Champion and the Traveler, and the Champion was speared and he took the damage from the traveler.
more LSV plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Again? Was there another time he misspoke? :P
Needs indestructible... but yea nearheath pilgrim + boros charm would work
you should change your comment so that it also shows a 5th game, at sth like 52 min, so it doesn't spoil the results :)
(Lsv tries to talk) ANY SECOND NOW
In Game 3, why couldn't Joel just Pillar of Flame the blocking Spirit token and kill him with the Thundermaw Hellkite?
That aristocrats deck rules. Glad to see someone win that wasn't using sphinx's revelation.
Ya and do you realize it is actually a term mad up by William Shakespeare to describe how someone looked. It means that they look cool.
a guy who fucks your shit up in magic
How?
You don't need to add "IMO" if you say its your opinion DIRECTLY before that.
3 Falkenrath's in game 4...so lucky!
Apparently she killed an artifact creature with a Grisly Spectacle in a match and no one caught it.
last game joel was mana flooded but they both played really well
