He Was THE NEXT SUPERSTAR QB for Ohio State (What Happened to Kyle McCord?)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 тра 2024
- After Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields and CJ Stroud, Ohio State was looking to continue their QB pipeline with Kyle McCord. There was good reason for his hype as at one point, he was a 5 star recruit and seen as a future NFL guy. Sadly, Kyle only got one season to prove his worth and he ended up being underwhelming and left for Syracuse. Today, I want to talk about the rise & fall of Kyle McCord, enjoy!

What player should I do a what happened to video on next?
Deacon Hill
Chris Chugunov
Julian Fleming
John Emery
Jordan Jefferson. Former LSU QB and Justin Jefferson's big brother
For everyone looking at his record and stats, I highly recommend you going back and watching the game tape. Doing so will allow you to see how timid he played and how mid he played against no name d1 teams.
The word in Ohio is that him and his father gave coach Day ultimatum. About his playing ,you do not give Ohio State a ultimatum.
What’s not mentioned here is that McCord’s father wanted to be assurances that he would start, no way was Ryan Day going to do that, or should he have done that. So without a promise of starting he chose not to compete.
Being pushed is what makes you better, its apart of college football. We'll probably never hear from him again tbh
Yep.
No way was Ryan Day going to do that
I'd rather be Kyle McCord than Tate Martell.
Lmao that’s not really saying much. That’s like saying I’d rather have slightly runny poop than explosive diarrhea
Nobody would want to be Tate Martell.
Agreed. Martell really unraveled. Too bad, kid had skills, but lacked the competition fire.
as a osu fan, no one thought he was the next superstar qb
Yeah on what planet was McCord expected to be a super stud?
@@dhazard he def got carried by marv in high school
I remember some people wanted stroud out to make room for this cat
Right! We all kind of figured the way this was going to turn out after game 1. No enegery and very inconsistent.
Its always funny to hear people say we "ran Kyle out of OSU"... Kyle didn't want to compete for the starting job again and made his own decision that he felt was best for him. I understand his decision and respect his choice but no one made him do anything. He wanted a guaranteed opportunity being it is his last year in college and went to a place where he was able to get that. Good luck to him, but no regrets on this side.
Before everyone in this comment section decides to blame the toxic fans at OSU, there are many things to consider that this video doesn't even touch. Kid threw into coverage all the time. His throws were often off. He was not good. He was not ready for football at a major program. Granted, his O-line was not great, but McCord had the jitters in the pocket often. The two biggest reasons he went 11-1 is that he had maybe the best supporting cast of skill players in all of college football on offense, and the defense was always able to keep the team in games. We will see if he is a huge upgrade a Syracuse, but many Buckeye fans feel as if he did not develop as a top tier QB should and it was the team that went 11-1, and not necessarily because of McCord's leadership.
There are also two major factors you neglected to mention that make his transfer more understandable. OSU fans would question the idea that McCord was brought to OSU as the "quarterback of the future" given that Quinn Ewers committed the next year. In an OSU fan's understanding, Ewers was the QB of the future, not McCord. That is at least how this OSU fan and all my friends remember it. However, the whole Ewers situation was screwed up by Day and McCord become the default QB at the top. I think we can all see the difference between McCord and Ewers. Secondly, McCord's dad is known to be a notorious a**hole. The story goes that back in December, McCord Sr demanded that Day name Kyle the starter before spring camp, knowing that Day had been talking with Will Howard all along. Day wanted competition to drive Kyle or whoever to be better, McCord Sr did not want it at all. Knowing that Will Howard was coming and that his son could possibly lose his starting position (not to mention the work Brown was putting into being the starter), McCord Sr pushed Kyle to transfer to ensure he would get playing time to help his prospects of going to the NFL. Some of it is a business decision for getting to the NFL.
We bet Syracuse will play favorite to win Sugar Bowl Champ vs Ohio St on Happy New Year’s Day 42-17
McCord may have known a great quarterback coach who’s currently at Syracuse can help him to the next level. Nunzio Campanile is a guru!
The Ohio State University Football Fan Based is the problem. I hope this young man has a great year at Syracuse and I hope they do good in the ACC so these two teams play in the new expanded playoff.
you have to be good to play at OSU, nothing new.
@@noone-um4hk you have to be a decent human, nothing new. Most toxic fan base in sports lol
@@Elliesbow Not even close lol just in college football, there are SEVERAL more toxic fanbases than Ohio State. Alabama, Georgia and Michigan for one all have far more toxic fanbases than we do.. and any professional team in Pennsylvania is more toxic than we are.
@@darthsilversith667 just because they are more successful doesn’t mean they are more toxic. Everyone knows you have the worst fan base and most overrated program. Cope.
@@Elliesbow I take it your team loses to us on a regular basis lol and Michigan was more toxic than we were even before the last 3 years and Michigan only got its recent success from cheating.. proven fact! And Georgia had TWO good years.., they have only had more success than us in the last 2-3 years.. before that, we were head and shoulders above Georgia and are still above them overall. Bama, also has only had better recent success than us but we’ve been at this level far more consistently and for far longer than Bama has been.
Bama, Georgia AND Michigan fans, but Bama “fans” take the cake in this regard.. are notorious for showing up in nearly every video that’s about CFB but not necessarily about those 3 teams and running their mouths about how those teams are trash and how their team would stomp both of them and “Roll Tide Roll!”… that is faaaaaaaar more toxic than anything Ohio State fans have done.
What even are your reasons for saying we’re the most toxic fanbase? Because we criticized McCord? He cost us the game this year and basically.. cost us the whole season because that one loss kept us out of the playoffs and out of the B1G championship.. Kyle had very little to show for playing a full season.. especially when he played the majority of each game too. There have been several recent OSU QB’s that put up way better numbers than Kyle and in half the game time.. then Kyle has the gall to offer coach an ultimatum of he either he has a guaranteed starting position next year or he’s walking.. the ducking audacity given all the circumstances! Then for him to not get that guarantee and run for the portal before our bowl game.. yeah no, Kyle deserved every bit of criticism he got. He in no way played well enough this year to have a guaranteed starting job next year and especially considering the incoming talent we have at QB! For him to make that demand when he didn’t earn it.. or threaten to transfer out if he didn’t get it.. no.. that’s not cool. Even still, the vast, vast majority of Ohio State fans I have seen, have still wished Kyle well at his new school and thanked him for what he did do for us. That is not toxic.. and it wasn’t toxic to criticize him for how he handled the situation either lol
You sound like some sore loser/ hater that’s just coping because your favorite team loses to Ohio State on a regular basis 😂😂😂😂 cope harder little one
And “overrated”..!?! 😂😂😂😂😂😂 Please explain and then tell us all who YOUR team is. Bet you wont lol
what went wrong? he lost 1 game apparently lol
That’s the zero context answer. People look at his stats and record and can’t understand the hate. In reality he has absolutely zero charisma or leadership ability, was an absolute killer of drives, constantly made the wrong decisions. The guy made the wrong read or threw a poor pass on 34% of his dropbacks…. That’s an insane #. All he had to do to beat Michigan was manage the game and not screw it up. Couldn’t even do that.
That one game was a michigan game, people care a lot if we beat michigan and kyle wasn't it..
Yep, and he would have beaten Missouri. That loss is all on Ryan Day for not keeping McCord around
@@danieltruax8916 I agree he would have beaten Missouri, so would Devin Brown. But Kyle leaving is 1000% on Kyle and his dad who demanded to be guaranteed started this year and then bailed when Day correctly did not give them that guarantee.
mccord doesn’t look too bad stats wise, but he couldn’t go through reads. against michigan, ryan day dialed up at least 3 potential touchdowns that he either didn’t see or flat out missed the throw on
People who aren’t fans just don’t understand what that game means. Throwing two picks and practically selling the game at the end forcing it to Harrison is why the fans turned on him. You can not lose that game. Stroud didn’t get this treatment because it was the defense that sold those years, and they got cooked by the fans too. That game means more than anyone seems to give it credit for.
Thank you for a good video and fair presentation. As an Ohio State fan, some of this really is disappointment at what could have been. Our offense took a noticable step back just as our defense started coming into form. I do not think it is fair to blame McCord. He is not the same QB as Haskins, Fields or Stroud, but we all knew that and no one reasonably could expect him to fill those shoes. I think many Buckeye fans fel McCord only needed to be a game manager for us to win and were frustrated when that did not happen. Part of it was QB inconsistency, lack of mobility and sometimes making poor decisions. Also, I noticed that McCord seldom hit his receivers in stride, often onderthrowing, which killed YAC. Still, the deficiencies on the OL (together with his lack of mobility) did not do McCord any favors. The problems on offense have a lot to do with poorer OL play. Ultimately, I think McCord will do better in a system more fitted to his strengths. But I guess we will see ...
Will Howard and Kyle are around the same when it comes to their passing abilities but Will can run and is more athletic. That’s why he’s the better option for Ohio State
I'm not 100% sold on the fact that Howard is better than DB33. I just hope that it's an honest to God open competition and we don't just start Howard because we paid him so much to come here.
What people don’t realize is that he couldn’t read defenses. Most of his stats came from MHJ alone. OSU had its lowest scoring offense since 2011, and only scored 20.3 points per game against ranked opponents (not including Missouri).
He’s at Syracuse and will do well
Kyle better enjoy his 12-1 record as a starter while he can because that goes down hill from here.
I think McCord will do very well at Syracuse. They have some good receivers and a solid running game, along with the new coaching staff.
Kyle was a B+ QB , mot a bad QB, 11-1 and a pass away.
Kyle IS a B+ QB in a college offense. B+ college QBs don't make the NFL let alone start.
Day runs a pro style passing game with the route tree depending on both the QB and the WRs reading the same coverage (Pre and Post snap). You must be capable of on time, tight window throws. Kyle struggled with this (as many QBs do once they hit the pros) CJ Stroud grasped the concepts and threw with ANTICIPATION which essential in Day's offense.
And he wasn't a pass away, he threw a pick against ND... it was dropped. Nice guy but he wasn't it.
2:22 throws into double coverage
With a wide open WR right there
Right on the same side he’s looking
Can’t miss that
It’s shown that he was just blessed to play with a Harrison level talent in High School
But missing wide open WR won’t suffice in College
Especially not at Thee OSU
What went "wrong" is if Ryan Day has a chance to improve the QB room, he's going to take it, & Kyle's dad didn't like not having any guarantees, so he bolted for Nebraska ... until Dylan Raiola showed up ....& then Kyle went with Syracuse.
This isn't a rip on Kyle or Syracuse either. I'm rooting for Kyle. It's simply what happened. No big explanation necessary.
Give me a break! Ohio State fans are ridiculous. 1st year starter goes 11-1. They ran him out of town! I hope this kid becomes Joe Burrow.
Where??? Syracuse?
Keep it big 10. Do gopher big 3 Thomas Tapeh, Lawrence Maroney, and Marion barber.
Its ashame many young people do not embrace competition
McCords Dad is what ruined this. Not Day or Kyle himself. Wish him luck.
I mean no offense, but the video is pretty misinformed. The stats do lie in this case. First off, McCord suffered an ankle injury vs Penn State that rendered him statuesque for the rest of the season, because it would not heal. His throwing motion includes a pronounced step forward that leaves him more vulnerable to sacks, fumbles and QB hits in the pocket, something that he could not afford to do behind an average offensive line. That, coupled with poor decision making and spotty throws in critical moments (See the game-winning drive vs. Notre Dame-- He showed poise here, for example, but nearly threw 2 costly interceptions that would have sealed a loss), made McCord a tough sell to the Ohio State staff going into year 4. I couldn't say Ohio State fans ran him out of town, but they certainly played a part in the final decision. I'm of the mind that Ryan Day was not pleased with his QB.
I think I came here to find out what happened to Kyle McCord and why he transferred, but all I heard was stuff I already knew. He wasn't run out of town. He thought that the starting position should be his next year and he got no guarantee that the job was his.
You're video on McCord... He wasnt ran out of town. His father wanted him to have a guaranteed position. Performance=guarantee so facing a possible back up role.. he decided to leave with his father's persuasive talks. Im not hating him... He actually performed really well. So please retract your statement... He wasn't ran out of Ohio State. He left on his own accord
The reality is => our media and Buckeye Nation $h!t on him every day of the entire season!
@@13kimosabi13 "The media" didn't. The beat gave him every chance in the world. Went out of their way to squash any Devin Brown talk. The only ones that criticized McCord were the ones that broke down the film. And it wasn't trying to tear him down. It was pointing out deficiencies and what he needed to work on. There was little to no improvement by year's end
Ohio State statistically had the 46th best OL last year. 2 years prior #1 amd #4. Mccord with a lack of mobility was playing with a good not elite OL
I’m pretty guilty of calling him mid all season, I realize he wasn’t was bad as I thought. I was hoping he would stay and become like a Quinn Ewers for us but him leaving was totally justified and we as a fan base(well most of us) regret how we acted and how we treated Kyle. Best of luck to him I know he’ll do really well at Syracuse
As a life long Michigan fan, Ryan Day is the issue. Couldn't beat Michigan with CJ
Wasn't there a video going viral of Connor stallions on the sidelines calling plays for the defense when CJ stroud was playing? So your telling me CJ stroud could light up Georgia's defense. But barley Crack michigans? Who got beat by TCU (who surprisingly) none of the coaches scouted 😂 and the one team they ended up losing against. And how is michigan LAST in the big 10 in recruiting. Even northwestern and Minnesota have better recruits rn. Everyone knows michigan about to get all the sanctions for cheating.
Time will tell if you are right about Coach Day and that take is not unfair imo. But to say he "couldn't beat the team up north" glosses over the issue of a multi-year, mafia-like cheating scandal, the commencement of which perfectly coincides with their overnight shift from a joke team that ducked Ohio State and their three remaining games (also refusing to compete in a bowl game) to a playoff contender.
No one ever mentions the horrendous offensive line or the inability to run the ball. The receiver's can't or wont block which eliminates big perimeter runs. A new starting QB needs two things to be successful a decent offensive line and a good running game, this kid had neither of these. I'm not saying he'd be a world beater, but when you breakdown the all 22 film the offensive line was bad, he could never get the opportunity to step into the pocket because the Center, Right Guard or Right Tackle were constantly getting beat.
What went wrong??? Michigan's 2023 defense was one of the best in the history of CFB 😂😂😂 yall trippin
💀 played one of the worst bama teams under nick saban and one of the worst offensive teams osu has had in a while. Michigan defense was good but forrsure not one of the best 😂
@Plants28 this was the same defense that beat cj stroud twice....guess those teams weren't any good either...worst bama team??? They beat georgia... the THE COPE IS REAL!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I always supported McCord and was n still am a fan. I hope he does well
Also it was more the o line than Kyle McCord
The issue wasn't the fan base and stats didn't tell the story. McCord had 1 good game against Michigan St, that's it. If you watched all the games, he should've had double-digit interceptions a d he missed a boat load of open receivers. Against TTUN, the Bucks should've blown them out with all the missed opportunities to wide open receivers. The O line had issues, but mostly in the run game. I hope McCord does good at Syracuse, but I'm glad he left. I hope Day doesn't make the same mistake and start Brown, if he couldn't beat out McCord then he most likely won't do any better this year. I guess we'll see..
The problem was not Kyle McCord it was the fan base. Bro had a better record than Stroud did his first year and had the same record that Stroud did his second year. Fan base was so convinced that the backups were 1 million times better and then it turned out they were abject failures scoring three points in their bowl game and had to go running screaming and crying
to the portal. If you’re not a generational quarterback like Stroud the toxic Ohio State fan runs you out of town. Because for whatever reason because they’re Ohio State they think that they deserve or are entitled to that.
What is our record against you guys again?
looks like he did well
What a phenominal come back win against the Irish for a QB that sucks and a 11-1 record as a starter???????
Now that Kyle is a Buckeye, I’ll root for him…go Cuse
it was his first year starting be patient and let the kid fucking develop. Holy shit y'all are so spoiled he's going to be a very good QB at Cuse
What was most alarming for me was this dude played like a freshman in year 3 in the system. Didn’t see much of a difference between what we got a majority of the season vs his first start against Akron in 21. Also feels like he just lacked the fire and Dawg attitude I want from my QB. Wish him the best at Syracuse but glad he’s not my QB anymore.
DB33 should have started last year kyle is a pussy.
OSU had a worse spring game than last year. QB's threw 4 interceptions and that secondary is B-.
McCord was in the system for 3 SEASONS! He never showed promise or flashed the ability of a 5 Star. He's got a good arm that's it. CJ Stroud became a 5 Star after the Elite Eleven Camp and there was never a doubt on whether he was better than McCord. You can't blame the fanbase for that.
Go re-watch the Akron game in '21 and tell me he's it. He wasn't. Day knew it that's why he refused to let him throw in mop up games and made CJ promise not to run. He knew Kyle wasn't it. He's mediocre and at tOSU, mediocre ain't it. If Will Howard has the grit of JT Barrett or Fields they'll be fine. Day can live with a General, even if he ain't the best passer. But all around Mid AF? Nah.
He doesn't read pro style Defenses (at all)
Absolutely ZERO pocket awareness
Stares down receivers or receiver (Marvin)
Can not go from the chalkboard to the field. Never grasped the concepts of the offense in real time
The constant calls for grounding are mind numbing (Panic Mode on EVERY play)
No emotion or drive to win (he never hinted at being a leader in the huddle)
3 Seasons. The above wasn't going to change in one more. He's a JAG
Good guy and certainly best wishes Kyle. Go Bucks.
Michigan went wrong, that's it. If they beat Michigan they win big ten title game and probably win a natty if they get past Alabama.... Which is completely possible. Close loss at Michigan... That's IT. Guy is good.
I don't think the play on the field of call McCord had anything to do with him leaving I think it had something to do with his Daddy wanting to hear that he would be the starter this year and Ryan Day says no it's an open fight for who plays they did not like that so they left
He was terrified to run the ball. He was terrified of those big scary giys on the other side of the line and allowed them to get in his and made shit decisions with the ball. He cost us a MASSIVE loss to UM and thats just unacceptable id rather lose to app state than them.
What Happened? The Wolverines hahhaaa MGoBlue
It’s surprising that coming with MHj from High School that He didn’t flourish having Stud WR that already played together and won a lot in High School
If he couldn’t succeed in that situation
He’s most def not NFL level
Their next QB was supposed to be Quinn Ewers.
Don't worry, Kyle, CJ couldn't beat Michigan either.
He had turible coaching. Alabama QBs go to the NFL.
Roll tide!
Because Bryce Young is so much better than CJ Stroud. You've got to be kidding.
Stroud also lost to Michigan
If they beat Michigan all the naysayers would shut up.
McCord isn’t why they lost. Coach is soft and the fans drink his Kool-Aid year after year. If Day had decided to run the ball, versus wanting to throw all over the field, they might have won. They were moving the ball well running but Day wants to “look better” by passing for a lot vs grind out a win.
He played scared. When you are the leader of the team you have to play like you got the biggest set in the room. He had talent I will never take that from him. But superstar? We shall see he has a brand new start in Syracuse. Wish him the best but I think it was a mutual separation, for the right reasons.
if it wasn't for Ohio State's defense McCord could easily lost three games. Say it like it is he was low engery and extremely inconsistent.
He would still be the starter 😂😂
He was fucking terrible fym if I remember correctly it was 39% of his passes that were incomplete were just gawd awful throws
Ohio State going to regret running him off 😂😭 just wait on it
This won't age well
Not at all he's a beta bitch that's scared of competition.
@adoniseilliamson3010 😂 they won’t bro
Kyle McCord getting hate for going 11-1 just shows you how toxic "lil bro" ohio state fans are
He is getting hate because with any QB we’ve had in the last 10+ years.. give them the weapons Kyle had and they go 15-0.. Kyle is the main reason we lost to Michigan and didn’t make the playoffs.. although I still feel we should’ve made the playoffs still anyway for as close as we played Michigan on the road. Kyle really didn’t have much to show for 12 games.. especially considering he played the majority of every game. He had very limited mobility, couldn’t extend plays and he frequently over or under threw a lot of balls and cost us the game against Michigan..

This young man didn't want to compete. He wanted a starting job given to him. He and daddy McCord had a meeting with the coaches demanding he be the starter or they were going to leave. While OSU competes for the Natty, cry baby McCord will be competing for a .500 record.

Didn’t like the toxic OSU culture and fan base so he dipped
He got carried by a stacked offense and coordinators
I think you'll see in 2024 that this wasn't the case. He'll do well at Syracuse.
Nobody in the Buckeye state called Kyle the next superstar. Ewers was next in line, he left. We had offered a kid from North Carolina and he decided to go elsewhere , then Raiola. Kyle was just next man up, if Brown could have stayed healthy, he might have not gotten a chance. We're in the same boat now. We got Howard and Sayin and Noland. Next man up. And Kienholz.
Kyle MCCord can’t move . To be a Qb now a days you have to be fairly mobile . Should of went to Penn st anyway . He wouldn’t have this problem.”unbiased opinion”

Said it all year long..... He was the embodiment of mediocre and was the weakest link on an otherwise championship caliber Ohio State team......a shame Stroud didn't stick around one more year. Would have won the championship no doubt in my mind!! Had and has NOTHING to do with the Ohio State fans.......... It simply is what it is....... And if you take Marvin Harrison Jr. out of the picture his stats and achievements take a serious nose dive..... No way anybody can argue that.... And maybe he will flourish this coming year under a new coach.... But it didn't happen at Ohio State because he simply just wasn't at that level yet..... No bones about it! CJ. Stroud would have, did and does shine no matter who his receivers are..... Don't understand how some people try to use Ohio States fan base as an excuse........ Did you see or hear of any other ELITE college programs showing any interest in McCord??? Case closed!! No body is disrespecting him... At least I'm certainly not..... Just calling it what it is....... He is NOT a Heisman caliber quarterback and that's the expectation at Ohio State...... Just like Alabama, Clemson, Michigan and all the rest of the Elite college programs.......
mccord gave his heart and soul to ohio state??? no tf he did not! bro called the michigan game "just a game". bro was never a buckeye
You can take it for what it is. I think that is him staying focused on the big picture and more focused on playing Michigan and what the prestige of that brings. We fans have a different perspective than players do. Players feel the crowd energy but they are out there playing. That is at least what I take from it.
Guarantee he’s not the only one at OSU that said or thinks that
what went wrong? Dude lost 1 game and the toxic coaching staff and fan base drove him out of town. LOL
Um, no lol He lost us the game and then he told coach that if he didn’t have a guaranteed starting job next year that he was leaving via the portal. That is him running himself out of town because he didn’t want to lose his job to a freshman 😂😂😂😂
Nice spring game osu.....some real powder puff stuff!
There is nothing wrong with Kyle McCord. He simply wasn’t given time to develop under Cryin Ryan. He will be a very good college quarterback and is a very good quarterback. Time will prove this. The problem at OSU is a culture problem. They suffer from elitism and think they can recruit their way to a natty. There is no team culture. Without being committed to the team and proper player development the Big 10 Championship and natty will continue to be a fantasy. The Missouri bowl game loss spoke volumes about where OSU is as a program. And as a team. This year won’t be any different.
This is why Harbaugh left at the perfect time. Even if Day beats Michigan, the fan base will say, u still couldn't beat Harbaugh

Do you think McCord got screwed by OSU? Or was he just not that good?
I think a bit of both. He wasn't as good as the previous quarterbacks Ohio State had, but the way he was treated was pretty despicable. He didn't deserve the hate he got.
They didn’t have faith in him

He wasn't that good, and more than anything else, his dad was in the middle of his decision to be at whichever school he could get a forsure starting job. That's why he decided to leave Ohio state. He couldn't get a guarantee. Saying fans made him leave is just ignorant.
They have the highest payroll by a lot. Still, they chased Joe Burrow and Quinn Ewers out the door.
They pillage the states of Florida, Georgia and Texas. Get all the best talent, play in a week conference and still lose in thr playoffs to the SEC.
He was never meant to be anything. He’s was unathletic asf and overrated to begin with. End of story.
He sucked.
