This has so many similarities to my life so far. Married once for 25 years, now going through a difficult divorce. I have a 32ft yacht, two loving dogs and two beautiful children now finding their own way in life. Many years ago I was at the edge and didn’t leap but now after all that has happened I am now looking to leap and owning my boat has stopped from literally leaping to a very different end. So having had most of the little self confidence I had stripped from me I need to shed my possessions and reach out to see the world before it is too late. It is hard when so many friends and family have so much advice for me but they are mostly the pillars of society who wouldn’t leap ever. This was very thought provoking so I thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences. Now time for me to leap…. Andy UK

The 'other side' of a messy divorce, well it gets better and better, never give up and if in doubt talk to a stranger on a bench and take the leap..its brilliant...divorced 10yrs and loving it!..freedom awaits.

Brilliant. Thank u. I turn 60 in two weeks. I’ve been sailing for 10 years. Bought a 1985 31’ Jouet 950 6 years ago and it’s in a slip looking at Logan Airport in Boston. I’ve been on some long trips up and down the East coast from Canada to Boston and Annapolis to Boston, on other peoples boat, this year I did my first solo overnight to George’s Island in the harbor. You’ve inspired me to get after it; to stop making excuses for not going further. This video was wonderful. Thank you.

I’m 58 now, and this video spoke to me in a way that no other YT video ever has. Strangely enough, I’m looking at a Nicholson 32 that’s currently for sale in Wales… my soul is ready to take that leap, but realistically, I’m not in a position to make it happen just yet, not without hurting people that don’t deserve to be hurt… it’s going to happen but I need to continue standing at that edge for now.

Godspeed. "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven . . . A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away." Ecclesiastes ch. 3. Wait until it's time.

Loved this story, Michael. Hope, you are doing well, still sailing or not. Stay safe, and always have a hand's width of water under your keel, mate.

Wow, your opening words hit the spot. I'm 62, living in London, and have engaged fully in life's hamster wheel and mostly its been good, Ive done a lot of stuff. My two gorgous boys are fine people, my work is done there. My much loved wife died seven years ago, I gave her the best care and feel privileged to have done that.
So choice, and opportunity has really opened up to me. Suddenly I no longer have any responsiblities other than to myself. Life has delivered me to the edge, it's quite scarry!
    Can I take the leap?
    I'm trying to!
There's a 1979 Rival 38 in Kalamata, Greece, that just might be my ticket!
I found your words hugely encouraging, Thankyou.

Thank you for your comment. I wish you every success. The Rival 38 looks to be a fast, seakindly, and comfortable boat. Add a Monitor windvane, and you'll go far. God bless you.

I enjoyed the story of Micheal finding himself on the open sea. When listening to him his voice reminded me of Peter Joesph of the Zeigeist Movement. I've owned a Nic 32 MARK 111, hull 26 Circa 1964 for over 14 years. Wonderful long keel small ocean heavy displacement cruising boat. I've sailed over 30,000nm across Atlantic to the caribbean and back home to the Uk, then a recent 4 year sojourn via France,Spain, Maderia, Canaries and the Azores. I've sailed my Nicolson mostly solo. Funnily enough one of the films I love was "The Way" with Martin Sheen walking the comino de Compostala in search of and inner truth after his son's unexpected death.
The beauty of long distance ocean sailing is you become one with the universe, I call it soul business, there is no hidding place either your with nature in all its forms. Awsome sunsets and sunrises, amazing star constellations and beautiful moon lit nights. Some times daunting white crested rolling mountainous seas, which Nic 32's take in their stride Simple living with your own 360 deg space as far as the eye can see. Micheal your short film and poetic dialogue makes it very special film to watch indeed.

Full-keeled boats are the most comfortable 'blue water' cruisers, for sure. I'm 10yrs older than you and planning to do the same. When I have time, on board, I'll write a book about my journey thru 30yrs of Catholicism, nearly 30yrs of Mormonism and nearly 6yrs, now, of Buddhism. Along the way, I've learned from 6 marriages, 4 children and 7 grandchildren. The truth of history is an education that will make you free. Thanks to YT, I've crossed the Atlantic 4-times, the Pacific 3-times and visited over 60 countries, and can't wait to do it in my own boat...
