  • It’s never easy to think about, but recognizing when your beloved cat is nearing the end of their life is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. In this video, we’ll explore the subtle and not-so-subtle signs that your cat may be approaching their final days. Cats are known for masking their discomfort, so understanding these signs can make a world of difference in how you care for them during this delicate time. From changes in their eating and drinking habits to shifts in behavior and energy levels, we cover all the key indicators you may notice as your cat ages. You'll also learn about physical changes like weight loss, difficulty moving, and changes in their coat quality. While these signs can be emotionally overwhelming, recognizing them early can help you provide the right comfort and care for your furry friend. As heart wrenching as it may be, preparing yourself and understanding your cat’s needs can also help you make decisions about when it may be time to consult with your vet about palliative care options or euthanasia. In this video, we also discuss how to provide comfort during this challenging time and how to cherish those final moments. So, if you’ve noticed any of these signs or simply want to prepare yourself in case you do, this video is a must-watch for any cat parent.

Every time I have lost a pet, I have had to remind myself that in reality I am only borrowing these beautiful treasures. In order to experience the happiness of sharing my life with them, I must be willing to accept that some day I will need to give them back to the creator with gratitude for the place they filled in my heart..

My soulmate, Tweedle told me he will be leaving before October of this year. I'm trying to prepare and be positive. He's trusted me with that secret and I can't let him down. • @KKTR

I must agree. My wife and I (and kids, now grown) have always had at least one cat in the house. In the past few years with two senior cats we came to realize that even routine care along with a quick check up was simply too expensive, usually between $200 to $300 for each cat and even more if blood or stool lab work was needed. Corrective surgery for something treatable is nevertheless out of the question due to costs that can easily exceed $1,500. We lost our beautiful 16-year old Mya (rescued as a kitten) a little over a year ago due to illness despite spending about $800 over the course of about 4 weeks. Our only cat now (Oscar, also rescued as a kitten) is a little over 17 and suffering from a thyroid condition. I know the vets can treat it but thanks to all these years of inflation, energy costs, and rampant price gouging everywhere you go we simply can't afford to cough up another $800 to $1,000 or more to try and save him. I see signs that he is dying more and more frequently, and it's heartbreaking to be unable to help him. Meanwhile our vets have a rather presumptuous demeaner when it comes to their fees, as though they assume everyone in this Dem-run state is comfortably wealthy.

Pet insurance is almost as much as paying out of pocket. Otoh, vet care is as sophisticated as people care and most folks have some kind of insurance.

I lost two 20 year old kitties at the end of last year, a month apart from each other. Both were feral and I found them at different times living in my barn. They both became indoor cats without any issues. My boy died of heart failure and I knew it was the end with the labored breathing and when when his lungs filled with fluid. My girl loved him and seemingly overnight started throwing up, then refused to eat. It was heartbreaking when she would look for him in the house after he passed. Life is not the same without them. I didn't know what love was until they both came into my life. We were a sweet, little family.

So very sorry for your loss 🙏 they truly ARE more than just 4 legged fur babies, they are family ❤ I have 3 senior cats that I have been attached to since getting each of them in a special way as kittens. They are now 13, 12, and 11 years of age. My youngest female has been having recurring UTI's over the last year about every 2-3 months. Her last vet visit for a UTI was in the beginning of December 2024. ALL 3 of my fur kids are beautiful in their own individual attitudes, goofiness, and personalities. I think our kitties can sense when their time is nearing. My last cat acted differently the last two holidays before she passed. At Halloween that year, instead of hiding upstairs as usual, she came downstairs to check out the trick-or-treaters. She did the same at Thanksgiving, coming downstairs to visit during the meal instead of hiding upstairs. She even put her paws up on people’s legs and looked up at people’s food with interest, basically saying, “Hi! Got anything for me?” It’s like she knew her time on Earth was concluding and she’d decided not to let fear get in the way of being around for these experiences. In early December that year, she crossed the rainbow bridge.

It is nearly the one year anniversary of my girl passing. She was euthanised in my lap at home. She went downhill quickly. Her first real sign was opening her mouth when breathing, although breathing was not laboured and she was still jumping and since we spent 24 hours a day together, she may snooze but not much. The main thing I noticed was she spent a lot of time gazing at me. She lost weight suddenly. The vet and I decided, as she was 19, there would not be any point putting her through the stress of taking her to the clinic and doing any tests. I had adopted her because she could trust she would never have to endure the stress of the outside world. The vet's view was it was cancer. I concur. She did not suffer, slept with me every single night, and ewen tried to escort me to the bathroom on that last day. I adopted her at 5 years. She was 19 when she passed. We loved each other so much and I miss her every single day.

You must me cautious for sings and any change. But if you see this - don’t dishearten and comes to conclusion to euthanasia- even if it is the time to say goodbye- because it is a kind of betrayal and most of the time misleading.
Always go for some holistic and very effective approach along with your veterinary treatment or without the treatment:
      🪴🪴
Try giving the kitty rice saline - to promote health, fight off germs and cold, maintain stomach ph level, helps to get appetite back - mainly for Electrolyte Balance !
Boil whole rice with more water - take the foamy white out while rice is getting boiled, add little salt. Feed your cat- sometimes hand feed from the corner of the mouth , if the cat does not eat or are having lower appetite - give every 1 ti 2 hour. If you suspect your pet is sick but takes food at the same time - give rice saline 2 or three times a day beside normal food. Rice saline is the same effective dogs and birds too.
Always massage your pet (cat , dog , birds) from the two sides of the back to the tail very gently if they have any breathing issue, FIP, fluid accumulation in lungs or simply sick - for quite a long time and frequently a day. Hand feed chicken stock, plain water and rice saline.
For Diarrhoea give Boiled green banana blend with the rice saline- feed every 1 or two hour, you can feed every 10 minutes for few hours depending on the severity. Deworm your pet and also let theme have a sun bath .
For vomiting- give boiled green papya juice.
Grass is dewormer and appetiser for pets. It also removes gas , also the mint.

    • @farihareza6464
      @farihareza6464 Місяць тому

I know it hurts but the cancer was not diagnosed and it is not humane to put down animals - this is a very wrong practice because we cannot decide who will live how long . Many cats survive more than the years - even yours one couldn’t still it was not the right thing to do . See, even on her last day she tried to escorted you to the bathroom! The vet’s licence must be banned. Clinically he can never say that. And what you said, she never trusted anyone but you - who couldn’t do any harm - but you agreed to her down - isn’t it a betrayal. We all will die one day, we will be weaken - would we want ourselves or our family member to be euthanised. Then how can we do this for our pets? It a a Misleading Practice not to shed their pain but to get rid of the tension we cannot tolerate for our animals. Don’t take me harsh please but I am just pointing out the wrong road we are taking for our beloved pets - in the name of comfort- we are betraying them.

My cat Jackie turned 18 in in November and is still going very strong. She actually has so much energy that it sort of blows me away! And she’s a good example that weight loss is not always a sign that a cat is dying - she was 12-13 pounds and overweight/obese for most of her life, but as a senior she’s weighed about 7-8 pounds for the last 4 years or so. It really freaked me out at first, and I was really concerned and definitely took her to the vet several times. But she’s just like a skinny tough old lady, now. Still has a big appetite and lots of energy and interest in life and people and the world around her.

I helped a few folks whose animals were ill, it was suggested they were suffering and took them to the Veterinarian to have them put to sleep. I held the dog and (separate times) cat, while their forearm was shaved for the injection. All the while I was petting them, telling them they are loved and will always be loved. I always say “See you on the other side.” Of course tears were flowing, but I tried not to be too emotional in front of them. I waited til they passed over. Fortunately where I live we can take our FurBaby home for burial. And we have a celebration of life.

My 3 year old cat Tre got sick the week before Thanksgiving in 2023. I didn't think too much of it. He first showed signs of not feeling well on Wednesday night so Friday morning I took him to an emergency vet. He had a tumor pressing against his bladder that the vet felt certain was cancerous. It would have been $1,500 to stabilize him and then another $6,000 for surgery. The vet recommended we not do either one but immediate euthanization. He didn't think he would even survive the stabilization treatment and told me even if he survived the surgery he will never be the same and might have 6 months to live as cats do not do well with major surgery. So I made the most painful, difficult decision of my life. To this day I cannot ride past that vet, I detour around it. I always said the day of my mom's funeral in 1992 was the worst day of my life, now it's 2nd. He never stopped being a kitten, he was so mischievous and fun. The hole his passing has left inside me feels as bad as the day it happened all this time later.

She sleeps a lot & often purrs alone to self sooth. She still eats but not much. Going to miss that little dickens.

I lost my cat a bit more than a year ago. One day while she acted normally all day, in the evening I could not find her and I thought she left the house without me noticing but I finally found her hiding which she rarely does. She was 16 years old so I was expecting the worst. the day after she didn't even come to eat. I decided to take my day off and I brought her to the Vet. They confirmed that she was very sick because of her kidney and was suffering a lot. they could have hospitalized her but they could not guaranty it would improve anything and it was very expensive. Had to have her been put asleep. I'm crying just remembering this day, I have another cat about the same age and I'm panicking each time I don't find her.

I had the best veterinarian in the world in the 70s, 80s and 90s. I had 2 dogs and after they passed, got another. When I took them in for an appointment, the first thing he did was cuddle the dog and clip his nails while asking what was my concern. I asked him why he was so generous clipping their nails regardless of the concern. He said most people are willing to bring their pet in for an illness but won’t make an appointment for a nail trim so I do it as a concern for the pet while using my medical skills to doctor the animal to make him/her well. He loved every animal that came in the door. Later, I noticed how many dogs nails were curled so badly they could barely walk. He was correct that so many people won’t pay to have their dogs nails trimmed. Imagine, it’s like wearing shoes too small that your toes curl, and hurt! People should be shamed.

One time when we were taking one of our cats to the vet she started making weird howling noises and she never had done that before , when they were giving her giving her a check up they started doing tests on her and discovered that she had F.I.V ( the feline version of H.I.V ) they told us that she was extremely contagious to be around other cats and would have to be quarantined and have a long and painful death , we couldn't do that to her and the Vet agreed that the most humane thing to do is to put her down , it was so painful to say goodbye , some how I think she knew she wasn't going home again , I somehow think the howling was her way of saying goodbye !

Even though I’d been monitoring him, and taking him to the vet, or even er (thank goodness for pet insurance), no one picked up on what was really going on till the last visit. Lymphoma, and other system issues. I called the other pet parent to the hospital to say goodbye.

But my vet told me that I'd fought for her for the last 4 months, & that I was doing the right thing for my girl!

Knowing when that time has come is so difficult. I had a female flamepoint Himalayan that had battled pancreatitis bouts on occasion, but after diet adjustments and B-12 injections her weight stabilized. But, in early 2020 she developed a condition where she would become paralyzed and not be able to move. Countless trips to the emergency vet revealed no root cause for it; they would run tests and find nothing. But, after steroids and fluids she would be fine again for awhile and then it would return.
After 6 months of treatment her kidneys began to fail and I made the humane decision to have her put to sleep. But, I felt nothing but pure guilt for putting her through all that torture. As pet owners we have a huge responsibility to make the best decision for our beloved animals.

Best advice always is go to see your vet if worried. My old 18 year old boy was at death's door before Xmas. I was convinced I would lose him due to fluid making it hard for him to breathe. He was very distressed and the vet saved him with Furosemide and thyroid drops 😍😍 He was always a lazy, indoor cat and has lost a lot of weight in last year, but since seeing the vet and check up yesterday, he is all clear for now and eating, pooping and drinking water like crazy (so peeing as well haha) but is totally chilled and happy. Currently passed out on my couch purring and dreaming happily. Oh yes, if your cat has arthritis, ask about Solensia injections each month. Not cheap 💰💲💸but really worth it. I realise I am spending equivalent of 8 months rent a year on his care and treatment but, as every cat owner knows, it's worth it 👍

Our 11 year old cat Burnie was very sick recently so we took him to the vet. The vet said it was likely he had cancer and to top it off he said he also had Dementia. We took him home and he soon became gravely ill. The medication we were given didn't seem to help him and he was deteriorating. Acting strangely with no appetite and losing a lot of weight. He seemed miserable and eventually he could barely walk. We had planned to put him down twice and both times cancelled as he seemed to be improving a little. Now a month later he's remarkably come full circle and doing great. He put the weight back on , his appetite is back and he has amazed us all. Burnie obviously doesn't have cancer or Dementia , I now have little trust in vets. $1000 later , a complete misdiagnosis and a lot of stress.

He was a semi ferile creature who would be happy to scratch, bite or hiss at you if you went near him. His original owners tried to take him back a few times but he always came back within 20 minutes. In the end they gave up. When I took him to the vet last week I knew it was going to be the last time. The vet confirmed my fears. I held him in my arms while the vet euthanized him. One of the worst days of my life. My little king ONYX was SO vibrant strong and fearless! Being the black panther Bombay that he was. He was only 2 years old but developed bladder stones rapidly. We found that out when we finally took him to the vet on December 1st late that evening. We just thought he'd just get an antibiotic and be on his way.. but the vet came out with the worst news we could ever hear. We didn't have pet insurance to cover the $10,000 surgery. The vet suggested to euthanize him right there but he was my girl's cat and she wanted him to die at home with family if he was going to leave us. We left the vet highly upset and considered surgery through college vets in training but before we could take him; he had decided to leave us. I had to work a graveyard shift and absolutely hated leaving him. I felt a horrible presence in my spirit that he was about to exit. So I broke down and fell apart over him before I left for work. He had a look on his face like "Come on man. You know we don't do that type of thing here". He was even purring a little for me. But after I left for work; he decided to vacate his body. I returned home to a shell of what he used to be on December 3rd. Been in mourning ever since. He was like Jesus in the form of a cat. My little best friend is gone forever.🥺😢😭😭😭😭 But his beautiful attributes have left a legacy to live by in honor of him. He was too great for this world. He probably had something more important to impact elsewhere. I'll NEVER forget him. EVER. Crazy thing is.. I saw a "light" in him. He was SO awesome, precious and truly cherished. He came into our home on Christmas Eve. Goodbye my little Christmas kitty. I had a blue Christmas without him.

My cat Jenny came to us on our front porch as a feral cat and we took her in, when she was around 18 she went outside for her usual strolls but never came back, mind you she always went outdoors so she knew the area and always knew to claw at the window to be let in. She left the way she came into our lives.

My tuxedo girl suddenly went blind but seemed to manage. She never had a problem finding the litter box, food, or water so I just watched. Several months later she was spending more time on her pad in the sun. I came into the room and touched her and she flinched. I knew her hearing was gone so I arranged for the vet to ease her out. I didn’t want her to be laying in her excrement or hungry and able to get food.

Our two female ginger cats were born in our kitchen. When Reddy was 14, she contracted cancer - I could feel her backbone when I stroked her back. She had a "transcendental gaze" that conjured up in me the last movement of Mahler's Ninth Symphony. Whitey died at 16 - she was completely blind and hardly able to walk. In both cases, I was no longer living in the U.S. and was thus unable to help them. I left this hard task to my parents, as usual. They kept Whitey's death a secret from me for a long time.

Our feral kitty started showing many of these signs about 2 months ago. I would have loved it if he had allowed us to trap him so I could take him to the vet and I would have loved to have him live indoors, but he was too smart to even be trapped. It was obvious he was going to be gone soon, and we did indeed lose him yesterday. Poor kitty. But he had a heated cat house and as much food as he chose up until the end.

But i have also a quetsion for The Cat Oasis!
My dear cat Nelson (about 13 year old) can't jump as high as he used too. Only about half a meter, maybe a little bit more.
But Nelson never said goodbye, whenever... Nelson is the most affectionate cat I have ever had. And yes most of the time bully Sparta wanted to fight it was an even score. And of course when I am awake I will stand between them, to ensure I love them both and not choosing sides. Bort of these cats probably understand that!

      @TheCatOasis  29 днів тому

It's not uncommon for older cats like Nelson to lose a bit of their jumping ability, but it sounds like he’s still full of love and affection. You’re doing an amazing job making sure both cats feel equally loved, even during their little squabbles. It’s clear they’re lucky to have you looking out for them! Sending lots of love to Nelson and Sparta ❣💋

Some extremely unusual behaviors my cat displayed were (1) her need to be extremely close &/or on top of me -- she was not a snuggle cat, never slept next to me, didn't like being picked up (2) starting fixedly at me from the kitchen table while I did things around the kitchen - she sat frozen still with wide eyes that she never took off of me then swiping me with her paw when I walked passed her. While those were extremely unusual behaviors, others such as lack of grooming was the first indication. At least she was very good about the litter box.

My cat died back in August she was 19 years old and she would've been 20 on the 6th of September and I wrote a poem in memory of her:
In Memory of a Faithful Friend
For twenty years, you graced my life,
With gentle purrs and playful strife.
A loyal friend, so soft and sweet,
With every purr, my heart you'd greet.
Through sunny days and stormy nights,
You stayed beside me, pure delight.
Your eyes, so bright, a loving gaze,
Will forever shine in countless ways.
Though this day brings a sad farewell,
In my heart, you'll always dwell.
Rest now, dear friend, in peaceful sleep,
Your memory, forever, I will keep.

Her and her husband were arguing and he left out and never returned. It's been 3 weeks now. We believe he left to be in a more quieter environment and passed away. Poor baby. He didn't deserve to pass like that if he did. If your gone forever rest in kitty heaven baby 🥺😞😥

I had to euthanize my almost 18yr old in August last year. She was diagnosed with diabetes and it could not be brought under control, she was not having a good quality of life, constantly crying for food or yowling in distress. I held her as she passed over. It was the hardest decision I ever made and I still cry and feel quilt over it, I was not prepared for the guilt. It was the best decision for her but it is so hard still to live with it.

Well I had a cat for 20 years. 2 weeks before she died she exhibited the very opposite of being sick. She interacted a lot more. She spent a whole lot more time around me. She was very playful. Then she disappeared for 3 days and I found her dead in a closet. I thought at time she was just feeling good. When I look back on it she was saying goodbye.

Back in April of 2022, my mother's cat Mollie was unable to urinate and had difficulty with walking. We took her to our old veterinarian office, where she was diagnosed with kidney failure. They wanted to keep her there over the Easter weekend for observation and treatment. (There was no guarantee that she'd make it through the weekend.) To do so would cost us over $2,000 USD (!!), with a 50% payment required upfront. (This was a veterinary office within a *PET HOTEL,* which is why the quote was so high.) We both said 'hell no' and chose to end Mollie's suffering by having her euthanized... *ONE DAY* before she would've turned *NINE* years old.
Today, we have three healthy three-year-old cats (two females, Bella and Holly, and one male, B.J.), and we couldn't be happier.

I do not know if I am intuïtive or I'am very focussed on my cats, but lack of apetite is my warning bell number one. Yes i had 5 cats and often some cat behaved other than they used too. Mostly they were targeted by my dominant cat, so they seeked shelter for a day or two. Not to been found.
So yes...veterinarians are so expencive these days... so I know that I can bring my cat in the weekend there! If I do, I have not enough finance to give my other cats enough food for the rest of the months. So yes I bring my ill cat after the weekend to them (except when the cat is really hurted or ill).
Still all my cats (hurted, dying or something like that) always turned back to me!
Because it is not just about you feeding your cat... it is the quallity time between you and your cats.
If your cat comes in again, he/ she wants to be appreciated, feeling beloved. And no 3 strikes on his/ her back will not always do the trick. Or would your baby (him/ her) think they have bonded with their parents enough to feel beloved by its parents, by two times petted a day?
    Your answer is probably NO.
Okay cats do need less attention, but come on they at least have about half an hour petting time a day. And every stroke is bonus for them.

I am sorry for your losses. Cats are cool like this. My son died on my birthday. He didn't like the cage. He made the decision to get into the cage himself and poised like how you like me now. I closed his cage put him on the porch and we went to his grandma's house. He died the next day on my 59th birthday. I took him prior to PetSmart. I heard stories. He had two arthritis shots. I wanted an X-ray. The doctor said he is panting and it would be extremely expensive if you find out more. The first day the doctor said those things don't live long. That was my son he's talking about. He died six months ago it hurts. He shows up supernaturally if someone hurts my feelings.

Appreciate that owners should keep veterinarians more involved in our pets lives whenever there are changes in diet, behavior, appearance, etc. But health care providers overall are pricing themselves out of the reach of a larger growing percentage of pet owners. The costs of treatments, examinations, medicines and insurance premiums keep skyrocketing out of sight with no solutions available.

I remember late one night, just before going to bed, our baby white cat, Sascha, was playing with our dogs, lying under a small table, swiping at the dags as they intentionally passed by. I shut the computer down and called to her to come to bed. She laid there and had a final swipe at the dog as I left the room. She never came to bed,
In the morning when I came out, her paw was extended exactly as it was when I left the room. Broken my heart, and the dogs were devastated, they loved her as much as we did.
I'm 70 now and we've been married 45 years. Through these years we have had to say goodbye to many furry members of our family, dogs, cats, birds and horses. Every time this happens we'd say "never again, no more pets. It is too hard to lose them". But there has always been another little soul to save. ALL out furry members throughout our marriage have been rescues from abuse, one particular cat still bites me every day for no reason, but she is my favourite because I know the abuse she went through as a kitten and accept her for what she is. She actually saved my life, truly!! But that is another story. I truly love her and all our other furry family members. At the moment our house has 2 dogs, 2 cats, about 100 birds (not counting the fly in feeders), and 8 humans (life is interesting).
Oh, let me not forget my very first cat I saved when I was 8 years old. We named him Combat for the usual reason. He passed away at 17 in my mother's arms the very day our first son was born, almost to the second according to my mother.
    Thanks for posting.

I have a 16-1/2-year-old cat who sleeps except when he’s eating or using the litter box, and he’s lost some weight. However, at his advanced age, I’m not putting him through a trip to the vet, which would only make him unhappy, and perhaps do him harm, until I have to put him down. At that time, I’ll give him a big dose of transdermal Gabapentin so he’ll be relaxed when the time comes that I have to let him go. One of my daughters agrees with this plan…the other doesn’t, and thinks I should take him to the vet. What do you all think?
Thanks for the information. It’s very timely.
