Gary, thank you so much for this information, which seems to confirm what I've been thinking and saying to my plumber. Although undoubtedly I _was_ overusing soap at times since installing a water softener, I've adjusted my habits and the water sometimes still feels way too slippery - to the point where I can barely hold onto dishes - and my hands feel slimy and even _look shiny_ once they're dry. Assuming I don't need to see a doctor 😀, I've been thinking the softening unit needs to be adjusted better. One of two plumbers I've had (the one who installed it, I think) told me that it's either hard or soft, there's no adjusting it. Yet looking at the head of one of the units I see there _are clearly_ adjustments you can make. My most recent plumber even _did_ make some, but it wasn't clear to me what he did, or even that he understood how to set it, as he seemed to be doing a lot of trial and error fiddling.... and I still have intermittent troubles. (That's another thing I don't understand - why it wouldn't always be the same. My salt level changes, but I don't think it has ever run out.) I just looked again and I see two concentric rings on one of the units, the outer one apparently showing the number of people in the house, and the inner one showing hardness, but I'm not at all confident that I'm reading it correctly. It's not intuitive, and I can sympathize with the trouble my recent plumber seemed to be having. Maybe what your video has done is prompt me to find my *owner's manual* and read what I should have read several years ago. 🙄 It may not be possible to diagnose my situation remotely, and I'm not asking you to, but if you have any feedback I certainly welcome it. At any rate, thanks for the video which seems to validate my suspicion that adjustments can be made, and that water _can_ be too soft; it's not just in my head, as I also read or heard somewhere. The bypass is a really interesting idea, too.
It sounds like you have a Fleck 5600 water softener and those manuals should be readily available on line and there should be UA-cam videos to help. I don't work with those valves so I am no expert on that brand.

I have a soft water system and it has done the absolute worst to my skin. I’ve developed skin rashes, oily hair, breakouts, hair loss, itching, you name it. It’s an absolute nightmare. I know the pipes are probably in better shape but what a price to pay 😐
I would definitely have your water tested for dardness and TDS (ppm) before and after the water softener AND the settings checked. Something isn't right!
Same here. But mainly hair loss on The top. Hair was fine until we installed a water boy softener. My head started becoming very itchy too. I hate it. I started washing my hair with water bottles and that’s helping.
Paul Burkhardt has a nice article on the web about this issue. One thing I'll point out is that the water hardness setting on the machine simply defines how often it needs to regenerate. The water going through the softener will come out "fully softened" if the machine is working correctly. The only ways to adjust this are to let your machine go past it's saturation point or to mix un-softened water back in like Water eStore says. But both of those have downsides and will probably not work well.
For some customers who want water partially hard we set up the plumbing to mix a small amount of hard water with the soft water. They are pleased with the result.
Hi Gary, if you use the bypass valve to make the water "less soft", will this also save on salt usage , and less water usage due to the unit not having to regenerate as often?
I'm using Aquaguard AWS 3500 water softener, The default hardness number is 25 And water is too much soft and floor also very slippery due to soft water... I need to increase the number or decrease number of hardness? Please suggest
I thought having the slippery feeling is part of having soft water. One thing I notice is that the cold side is soft, but the hot side is always a little less soft. I've already drained the water heater and filled it with soft water, but it still does that. My hardness is 10 so it's not that bad. - My softener setting is at 25
With your water softener set at 25 you are wasting quite a bit of salt (and water) during regeneration with no upside. Not sure why your hot water would be less soft.
@@water_estore I believe my iron level is about 2-3 ppm... so that's why I set it to 25... it says to add 5 to each ppm of iron... so 10+15.... is 25 not the correct number?
It really isn’t meant to be used as a means of mixing treated with untreated water. If that is what you want to accomplish you are better off building a 3 way bypass around the softener with ball valves and leave the bypass slightly open
Nope. If you do that you will have what you percevie as slimy water for several days, then hard water for a couple of days until it regenerates when the cycle begins again. Check your hardness settings first to make sure they are correct and try to use less soap.

Your water hardness can only go to zero, you can't make it softener than that. You need to set your water softener based on your hardness, see this video ua-cam.com/video/XMY69hdhX44/v-deo.html
Can the level set on the machine cause the water to taste salty? Hi Gary, thanks for the video first ,I am searching the answer for the slimy feeling of soft water and finally got ur video, as u have said to add untreated water with treated water ,can u please tell me how much untreated water can I add with treated water for a bucket
it really depnds on a number of factors. You need to plumb in a bypass which you would leave partially open so the water mixes while being used. Set it based on trial and error.
Our water test perfect, but the slimy feeling is gone, how can I bring it back? Less or more salt? I've cleaned resin with res clean, regened more frequently, still no sliminess. Can't find anything online to get sliminess back. Thanks
Hello. I recently moved to an area with soft water. Our water feels slimy and has a sicklt sweet odor to it. It is also very salty. What can I do to fix this issue? I do not have a water softener this is the way the water comes to the house.
Your water is likely high in sodium. High TDS. The only way to reduce this is with a Reverse Osmosis system like one of these waterestore.com/search?type=product&q=vectamaxx*
Hi Gary, does the water hardness level need to remain at the same setting even after using it for several months? For example ours was originally set at 25 but we keep lowering it because when we tested the softened water our hardness is at level 50 lowest setting, ph is 8.4 highest setting, alkalinity is at the highest level and chlorine is at 0. None of them at the suggested levels. Our drains have an awful odor coming out when you turn on the water and we have salt film all over our sinks. Water is super slimy and sometimes even sticky feeling after use. We have only had the unit for 6 months. Any ideas that might help?
How hard is your water before the softener? Do you have any iron or manganese in your water? You need to know because that will determine the correct settings. Have the water tested.
I dont have this system and dont know if theres anything I can do (I am only a tenant) specifically for my shower. I hate this nasty slimy feeling water. It has a strange dog smell too, I never feel clean after I shower and it’s horrible! Is there a special shower head or additive I can buy? PLEASE HELP!
What if I just want to increase pH? My pH is 6.8 after the softener, then down to 5.3 after my RO. Alkaline/mineralizing filters can increase the pH after the RO but I don't know how much... maybe only by 1 pH. So either I need two alkaline filters in series after the RO to get above 7pH or maybe if I can make my water softener not take out as many minerals? Can I do this by reducing the hardness level? I think it's set to 30 so if I reduce it to say 25 and experiment, could that help me increase pH so I only need 1 alkaline filter? Or wasting my time thinking of adjusting the softener? Thanks!
Softening has no effect on pH. Remineralization filters like this waterestore.com/products/omnipure%C2%AE-k-series-2x10-all-calc-3-8-fqc-k2548-kk?variant=44133641453781 will raise the pH to 7.0, not higher no matter how many you add. Why would you want your pH to be higher than 7.0?

My water is 110-250 ppm. What grain water softener should I use?
Assuming you have 4 people or less in your household this one will work fine waterestore.ca/products/hum-deluxe-water-softener-30-000-grain
Water from water softener making white spots on the surfaces. Can I ask, What may be the issue?
I would have the water tested for Total Dissolved Solids. Your water may be very high in mineral content, could be sodium.
@@water_estore Thank You for your reply.. Could this due to the problem of my water softener? If so, any advice to solve this issue?
How do you keep soft water from damaging the anode rod in your water heater quickly?
I don't know, but I do know it happens rarely. Some rods react to softened water differently.
Not that I know of. Have you spoken to your landlord?
@@water_estore Yes and of course they say nothing is wrong, so they dont plan on even checking the hardness levels in the water
What can be done if the city water is too soft ?
Nothing that I know of, I suppose you could add some calcium to the water to make is slightly hard.
I think not filter is washing with lard ..it's nice but filter it too
Not sure what you mean?
So it’s a bleeder valve
Yes, in the sense that you are bleeding some hard water into the soft water to make it less hard.
Oh my... come on gary. Clean up the technical errors in your presentation!
Sorry but not sure what you're talking about. Can you be more specific?
