if you choose to stay during this, i advise you to look up first hand accounts of katrina survivors. at least maybe you will be able to anticipate what you are about to endure.
our entire population is traumatized because of what happened and what we saw. we're not being dramatic.

I worked at Greenbrier mental health facility in Covington for a few years. The amount of people that we treated between 2011-2013 that was still traumatized was heartbreaking. That was very eye opening for me. I am from Houston and recall that time very clearly. Seeing it from their perspective was awe inspiring. I helped how I could but that trauma was great. My prayers to those saying they will tough it out. They aren’t seeing the entire picture.

His boss with him apparently has friends in Brandon further inland where its not supposed to be in flood area, so they have been taken in by them staying there.

I'm worried about my brother in Sarasota. I grew up there and I'm bummed for my home town and state. All that debris is a nightmare. I saw Ft Meyers after 2 hurricanes in a a couple weeks. It was terrible. That junk laying around combined with the storm surge is going to make a huge grinder. I hope they're removing as much as possible.
I miss Florida, especially the fishin', but not the storms. Sarasota hasn't had a direct hit since 1936 if I remember correctly. They usually go down to Charlotte Harbor or up to Tampa Bay to the bigger bays.

I mean, i guess most of y'all don't realize that Florida Homes are built to withstand these winds....Most other states don't build their homes to withstand 200 mph winds but Florida Homes are built to withstand strong winds. We get nasty thunderstorms often that produce anywhere between 100-130 winds...if not 150 moh winds. That's on a regular basis. Most homes in Florida,even mobile homes, are built to withstand high winds. Mobile homes even have hurricane straps. North Carolina homes aren't built to withstand these winds, nor are himes in mist other States. I'm not saying we don't need prayers and best wishes... I'm saying that you don't need to make snyde comments about those who choose to ride it out. True Floridians have been through some nasty storms/hurricanes. By the time it hits landfall the winds will be 100-130 mph and that's not that bad for us.
I think there’s more than wind to worry about (i.e. flooding). Plus you gotta take into account trees falling on houses and heavy debris flying around.

They were there for Helene, stranded for 8 days by washouts and mudslides, and finally got out...headed down to their other home in Bradenton and got there Saturday. Now here comes Milton. Seriously though, we all built our homes to withstand brutal punishment. My house is on Lake Okeechobee, NW quadrant, on a builtup pad 20 ft above the lake, reinforced double CBS construction with aluminum beams, struts, joists, and rivet reinforcement of the interior frame, overlapping aluminum storm shutters that bolt tighten onto aluminum strips secured with concrete sunk 8" masonry screws.
100% confident in our houses vs any of these storms. Outbuildings, vehicles and landscaping will be goners though.
Livestock and animals won't stand a chance either, which is an absolute tragedy. I no longer have livestock but an old rule of thumb was if you can't afford a livestock trailer or emergency transport, you shouldn't have livestock. Just an old unwritten rule from the code of honor that no one reads anymore.

A lot of people aren't refusing to evacuate, we just can't afford to leave or shelters and hotels are already filled. The roads are also a huge issue there's no way to get out right now. I'm stuck where I am in a mobile home. It's not great!

Evacuate. Take this seriously. A womans son died in Helene because she stayed in her home and even being on the roof didnt save them, their home collapsed and her son drowned. All at the ignorance of his parents who didnt evacuate!
Actually no one saw it coming, not even govt officials. There were no evacuation warnings. They haven't had this kind of damage in over 100 years. Please do not blame the parents or any other victims victims of this tragedy.
