Passo Fedaia (Caprile) - Cycling Inspiration & Education

- Watched over by the highest peak in the Dolomites, the 3,343 metre high Marmolada, the Passo Fedaia is an enchanting journey of mystery and intrigue right from the very beginning. From Caprile, in the east, you’re faced with just over 14 kilometres of climbing at an average gradient of 7.5%, not so bad you may be thinking? Guess again.
I remember the first time I tackled the Fedaia it was the ninth climb after a monster day on the bike. We needed to make it back to Canazei before dark, just one little peak stood in our path. Meandering our way through the early villages past mythical creatures, sculptures and goblins towards Serrai di Sottoguda, one of Europe’s most beautiful gorges with limestone rock 100 metres high on either side, cascading waterfalls and a slither of tarmac pitching up to 11% felt like something out of Alice in Wonderland.
Captivated by its beauty it was only a matter of time before the Fedaia unleashed its full fury, reinforcing exactly why this is one of the hardest climbs in the region. From Malga Ciapela the road ramps up viciously to over 12%, holding its form for nearly 3 kilometres. A second to catch your breath at Capanna Bill rifugio and “BOOM” it hits you again, only this time harder. It was on this very section of road in 1998 that the great Marco Pantani set the Giro d’Italia on fire, demolishing the peloton and launching himself towards overall victory in the race.
Make sure you have compact gearing. As the road starts to switchback the gradient just keeps rising - 15%, 16%, 17%, 18% until the summit when you’re blessed with the beauty of the Lago Fedaia and the satisfaction of taming a true mountain legend.
Start: Caprile
Length: 14.1km
Summit: 2,054m
Elevation gain: 1,031m
Average gradient: 7.5%
Max gradient: 18%

I moved to Ireland, I'm from Belluno, I was used to see these landscapes very often, almost everyday, this clip made me cry!
Superb. It goes on the "to-do" list....
Thank you very much Mike, wonderful video about a wonderful place in the Dolomites!!!
That's a climb, beautiful scenery smooth riding great upload..cheers
These are so awesome that I can't possibly upvote them enough. Also, very happy to see that you continue to make them, Mike! A very big, "Thank you" and "Keep up the great word".
+amadeusb4 Thank you so much for your support. Ride safe. Mike
Great video, again! And I will be eagerly anticipating Pordoi!
perfect timing to post video! Today is my group ride!
Watching these videos has given me more motivation when climbing total respect. Also the Cinematography is beautiful capturing you, the climb and the surroundings.
Thank you so much for your kind words of appreciation.
So beautiful at the top. Great video.
The heart rate was a nice touch and as always gear ratio. Truly inspiring and the scenery in these videos are majestic !
- Ride on Mike
Thanks! Happy to hear you like the HR and gearing info! M
Wonderful
My brother, That beauty!. But like everything beautiful, very hard to get. Good work.
Beautiful video (again).. Can watch these Col Collective vids for hours!
Perfect! That's what they're there for. Enjoy!
thanks for another Italian mountain !
so beautiful
Wonderful video again...the cinematography was brilliant ...especially through the initial section of the narrow pass... the waterfalls were filmed beautifully....the short film really captured the beauty of the full way...without a doubt and beyond that your considerable effort Mike Cotty ...Fantastic stuff...Cheers!!!
Thank you Rahul!
Well said Rahul !
Jai hindley won the giro here,he was spinning and going for broke , the last few kms are quite hard but so rewarding like you said the marmolada ,it is massive..I can't remember but I think it's the same road to the passo giau.if you look at 2022 giro some of the main contenders were at their limit , kudos to Mike and the giro riders.
Man O' Man, Mike you are in shape....keep on climbing buddy. Great video.
Cheers Rob! Glad you enjoyed! M
this is one beast of a climb from this side
Awesome! That is all.
Yehey another upload!!
Hee-hee! More mountains on the way!
Climbed this on my enduro bike, after a long day of riding. Needed every bit of my 30:50 gearing to make it in one go... Loved the ake and the black descen on the other side to Canazei!
Trek Travel I need Mikes 34x28 cassette. Mike now I don't feel bad looking down at my stem. Looking forward to riding the Domites this summer. Thanks for the inspiration Mike.
In my opinion this is the most beautiful italian climbing, along with Tre cime di Lavaredo, Stelvio and Colle dell'agnello. Tough and stunning, at the same time.
Another awe inspiring video Mike, cycling shoes are on now…lol!!
That's what we like to hear! Ride safe and enjoy Kev!
Just got back from doing this exact same ride, the section from the ski resort to the top is unforgiving, as there are no real switchbacks until near the top. A long straight section with double digits is a mental challenge for sure. The detour through the little gorge is a MUST DO, I think it was 4EU now for entrance. Also, stop by the cafe at the top and get a nice hot chocolate, before a fun descent.
Wow, I only drove down this climb on the way to Alleghe, remember thinking how steep it was. I'll have to go back and ride up this and visit Sottoguda! Excellent video and nice new addition with the HR. Can we see your power numbers? ;-)
Mike IDOLO
Once again a big thanks for a super video. Great information as regards gearing and heart rate (quite low considering) but what would make sense of that heart rate would also be cadence and watts! This would give a better indication of the effort required. Oh and speed too :-)
+Silverarrow Thanks so much for your appreciation! Definitely agree on the power output info, I got a bit obsessed with that at one point (looking at the little black box on the handlebars) instead of enjoying the view which to be honest always gave me more energy ;-) Ride safe, Mike
Wow. Can't believe Mike actually uses the 34x28.
grasscar Yep, always found if I can keep on top of the gear I'm more efficient or in other words 'spin to win' :-)
Made it last week in almost 30 Celsius degrees hell - what an awesome piece of a climb! Keep up the good work Mike! Any other Dolomites climb in the near future?
Good work out there!! Loads already filmed from the Dolomites, working on many new videos at present so stay tuned! Catch you soon. Mike
Another great video! Mike: what's the name of the song starting when you pass the gondola to marmolada? So many nice tunes on your videos! Do you happen to have a Spotify playlist or similar for the songs used? Greetings from Carl, fellow haute route Dolomites 2016 rider
So inspiring. Thanks Mike. The shot of the Willier with Fulcrum wheels looks oddly out of place ;-)
I need to replace the monument at the top with a Cannondale equipped with Mavic hoops then the world will surely be complete? ;-)
+The Col Collective indeed
Dear Mike
I envy you in a good way!
Hey Mike. I have a question for you. You speak a lot about compact gearing. What are your thoughts about mid-compact (52/36)? With a bigger cassete in the back (11/30 or even 12/32)?
That's a great question. Overall I think that the new mid-compact gearing is the way forward. With an extra couple of gears on the cassette it really gives you an excellent spread of gears for both climbing and descending so you have the benefits of a compact when going up and a standard when heading back down. I've got a couple of chain rings to wear out first then I'll most likely be making the switch. Hope that helps. Ride safe, Mike
thanks for the quick reply! you rock! keep inspiring up these beautiful mystical mountains!
Splendido, ma... sto impazzendo per riconoscere la colonna sonora. Mi aiuti? Can you help me? Thank you
The hardest climb in the vicinity in my opinion
What is the music called - especially the piece at around 2:45?
Fatto domenica scorsa da Caprile. Il Tratto da Malgaciapela è vermente tosto. 5km tra il 12 e il 15%. Risparmiate energie nella prima parte
I'm a bit confused at minute 3:49. Why is the peak heart rate only 158? I know I would be 170-180 if it were me...am I missing a vital training step?
Kimberly Murray the peak heart is a personal parameter.
Gianni Bugno maximum 195
Claudio Chiappucci 175
Also comes down to age.
My 2 best friends are 18 and have MHR's of 208. Both are top notch regional XC runners.
can you ride your biccyle through the the gorge now (2024)? Are the repairs finished?
Good question, I’m not sure 🤔
@@TheColCollective I know now Igor told me! It’s still closed will open to walkers first soon but stay closed to cyclists. There is talk of having a cyclist only path but to put a toll on it. They are still nutting out the details

Mermelade means Jam in German I think
