A few months back, Mika Häkinen and David Coulthard had a go in the passenger seat, of the WRC champion. They had never been so scared, in their life.
In fact, one of them refused to take the tour back, from B to A. He jumped out of the car, and refused to go any further.

Top speed in Finland is about 200km/h and average speed in special stages is about 130km/h including junctions and breakings etc.
Yep. The average is mandated by FIA when they approve the stages so there needs to plenty of slower sections when there are high speed sections.
@@IlkkaPrusi They had to close a few stages in Sweden due to that. They wanted the average speed below 130km/h but some madman set the average at around 136. And for a stage that is over 10km of snow and ice, it's pretty damn fast.

Rally group B of the 80s 🤯
My uncle been driving and competing in Rally for over 40 years and still going strong. Been helping working on his cars for 20 years. Been out in the woods watching Rally since age 2. There's only 1 type of drivers i trust in any weather and road condition. That is a Rally Driver. They are beyond any other type of racedrivers.
I have been a fan of Rally since the 70s and still watch these rallies on tv. The finns are very good in ralling but there are many good drivers from other countries also for exampel Ott Tänak, Sebastian Loeb, Elvyn Evans.😊
Loeb was untouchable at his best. And I am an Englishman saying that.

Been a while but was a functionary during a Swe winter rally many years ago. During the night stretches watching Michelle, Stig an Walter etc passing by at 2m distance was surreal!
Just knowing the name "Colin McCrae" is enough to be welcomed with open arms, an absolute legend and inspiration for many drivers. Ken Block and Travis Pastrana even got to race the mad lad during the XGames.
Colin has some pretty decent footage and he drove arguably one of the nicest liveries in Rally.

Well... Colin McCrae is a character in "Gilmour Girls". Colin McRae was a rally driver. ^^
Ken Block and Colin McRae did go head to head in XGames 2006. But since McRae did his last WRC event in 2006 (Rally Turkey) and Ken Block did his first WRC main event in 2010, I don't know of an instance where they actually went head to head in a proper rally. And due to the helicopter crash of McRae in 2007 and Ken Blocks snowmobile crash in January last year, we will not be able to witness that.
Both of them had a similar problem in WRC: spectacular but likely to get technical problems (could be due to the driving style... maybe). Despite that, McRae made it to 1 championship title in 1995 (Subaru Impreza 555).
Block entered WRC when the dynasty of the Sébs was already well under way with Sébastien Loeb winning world champs from 2004 - 2012 and Sébastien Ogier from 2013 - 2018. Ott Tänak sneaking in for 2019 and Ogier again for 2020-2021. The last two were won by Kalle Rovanperä. Let's see how long his streak is gonna last...
Standing close to those (very, very loud) cars as they roar by at speeds that make the spectators wet themselves is pretty damn awesome. I've been to the Finnish rally three times, I mean to go many more times. I even saw Colin McRae and the other legends once. It was my first experience. Definitely worth a few euros and an early wakeup.

Hi ! Think about this; these drivers are able to drive on ANY surfice, ice, snow,sand , asphalt and the mixes with these ! And these roads are mostly
in bad condition and narrow between trees and rocks etc. These guys with these spectacular high-tech cars are absolutely the Best Drivers ever!

Theres a big rally culture for Historic rally cars and amateur rally in Finland. Its called F series rally or ''F-sarja'' or search
''Lahti historic rally'' there are many amateur drivers who still are very talented!
For whoever didn't know about the rallys: rally drivers are competing on whatever the road was made of, in whatever the weather conditions ware at the time of rally event, at whatever the time of day or night. And if they crash, they hit... of course, whatever is standing beside the road. Shortly, they are the most experienced and versitile motorsport drivers in the world.
Other things, that make the rally discipline so attractive, are:
- every single rally car is totally street legal, because the discipline regulations are requiring it, rally crews are driving through the traffic between the special stages,
- special stages are established on ordinary public backroads, just temporarly closed off for traffic in spite of the rally event, afterwards anybody can drive along these roads for free (excluding roads on private terrain, of course).
Best driver is obviously Kalle Rovanperä, 23, back to back world champion. You should react to his moments. He is the son of a former rally legend.
I think calling his Dad a legend is over egging things a bit, Harri was a very good driver, maybe he was unlucky to come in at the time Tommi Makinen was dominating and just before Sebastian Loeb came in, but a legend I'm not so sure.

Harri Rovanperä was the 2nd driver to arrive to the scene and contrary to Carlos Sainz, who was there first (and whom i respect also), immediately realized how bad it was, dropped any thoughts about his own competing and directed the operation when further help arrived. there was literally nobody else that could have done that in the world. RIP Beef!

The Group B era footage is sometimes the most spectacular, especially the rallies where the crowd is, shall we say, a little closer to the action. Also worth checking out the video of Walter Rohrl driving an Audi in the early 80s, where there is a camera showing what his feet are doing during the stage. His coordination and car control are phenomenal.
It's amazing experience to see these things live in action, it's just insane! And even crazier onboard... I got to sit next to a WRC2 driver on test and that was one of the most memorable moments of my life. The weird thing about it was that it felt as if the car was going on tracks even though it was Finnish gravel. 190kph in a forest road...😂

03:13 Sébastien Loeb is the greatest rally driver of all time. A record 9 consecutive driver's championships. Also the most podium finishes, most stage wins and most event wins. Now, retired.
He is also blindingly fast on a race circuit. 4x Race of Champions winner. Successful in World Touring Cars. Quick in Porsche Supercup and GT Racing. The guy's a beast!
He would have few more, but I quess he got bored because there were no real opponents and retire.

For more insane Rallye Type in Group B Portugal. it is famous for fans staying on the road only standing back seconds before the cars are coming. Group B are Rally cars form the 80s with maximal power and minimal safety.
I just loved those monsters! As a driver my self, back then: Those idiots, were a big part of the end of Group B! They were quilty for many, unnecessary accidents and deaths, in rallies. What a jerks, with short dicks, trying to "prove" something masculine! As far as I know, some of those dickheads touched the cars, and some loosed their fingers?

The Finns are badasses at rally. I had a friend who was a rally driver, and he used to take me out on some really heart stopping drives around the woods. I mean, it was almost to the point of sphincter failure. Nowhere near these levels, but still bloodcurdling fast.

The people standing so close to the track are insane. And so are the drivers :D I know they've all trained on that particular track before and have it graphed out, but I don't think a tree will step out of the way at that speed.

I recommend looking up Finnish folk racing. There was a segment on it on Top Gear: "Mika Hakkinen Teaches Captain Slow to Drive | Top Gear"
I Love rallying I’m now in my 60s and been a stage commander at world championship events in the past, I’ve also done circuit racing events and was sector marshal at the famous Ayrton Senna + Nigel Mansel F3 crash which gave Senna, the F1 contract.
Whatch rallying it’s a brilliant sport.

I have been on a ride with real WRC car and if the driver wasnt that great i would have pissed myself. Speed and how tight corners they take is just crazy. You should also check like Neste rally Finland clips. Rovanperä is ofc best driver at the moment.
As far as I'm concerned these guys are the true kings of motorsport, F1 included. Their skills and reflexes are next level. 👌🏻❤️
Good ole American boy here from out west, McRae was my childhood hero! He never won much of anything, but the guy was an absolute LEGEND and a was always a hell of a good time watching him drive. Was very unfortunate we lost him when we did
Another driver you need check out in the rally world is Ken Block. Between his Gymkhana videos, creating DC and Hoonigan, being the WRC people's champion (much like McRae), and all the incredibly endearing interviews, there's a TON of stuff you can look up to react to.
I imagine others have told you to/ you know of him, but on the very slight off-chance that you haven't, PLEASE do!
Theres a youtube channel called "Antti Kalhola" that has a motosports stuff, not completely focused on Finland or Finnish drivers but his videos are most excellent.

The action and insanity of WRC easily makes it the most exciting and entertaining motor sport on four wheels, at least in my view🙂

from Belgium we have Thierry Neuville. He is in this rally as well with spectacular jumps. Watch the Hyunday with on top of the roof the Belgian colours: black yellow, red (watch at 6:12!!)
Ouninpohja stage in 2003 , Markko Märtin (EST) set the record for the longest jump, travelling 57 metres (187 ft) in the air at a speed of 171 kilometres per hour (106 mph)

There's no debate who's currently the best. There's only debate if he can be considered the GOAT yet. That'll be 23yo double world champion Kalle Rovanperä (#69), beating records left and right, and having a laugh while doing it.
By the way, previously the youngest world champion was Colin McRae at 27 years and 89 days. Kalle smashed that at 22y and 1 day. That's how extraordinary that kid is.

2022 overall winner was Ott Tänak. He almost didn't compete in this event, because his wife had been diagnosed with cancer. But it was Ott's wife who told him to go and compete. And Ott drove the wheels off his car. He won and good for him.

As perspective to Finnish WRC rally speeds: famous german rally driver Walter Röhrl refused to drive Finnish rally because the high speeds and long jumps. He had never driven this rally.
You should visit Finland some summer while there is Secto Rally Finland (or Jyväskylän Rallit) next one is 1. -4.8.2024.

I've never been able to watch a WRC or WRX event, but I've been to plenty of Rallycross events, and I know those were big in the UK in the 80s and 90s, as the old Group B rally cars got converted to run there, so the races in the UK had a lot of famous drivers from all over Europe, a lot of Finnish drivers, a lot of British ones obviously, with a sprinkle of a very angry Norwegian with a mustache who threw temper tantrums if things didn't go his way, but watching him battle against the Finns was always entertaining.
Rallycross isn't timed point to point stages like WRC, it's several cars doing laps at the same time on a rally circuit, in case ya weren't sure.
As I'm Norwegian I can't really speak for what's normal in Finland, but I do believe they have a similar rallycross league as we have in Norway, in Norwegian it's just called Bilcross, it's a class for cheap rallycross, basically a completely stock car with safety gear added, so anyone should be able to compete, and you can start from about 15 or 16 to compete in it, and as Finland is very much a rally nation, likely THE rally nation really, I'm sure some drivers might have gotten their start in "folk rally" which I often can see it translated as.
Only time I've gotten to see F1 in person, was on the Nurburgring GP track, and it was classic F1 cars, I don't really know much about F1 so I can't say which eras, but likely from the 40s and 50s, maybe 60s, the old cigar shaped types without aero.

Colin McRae was very popular in Finland too. Very nice but reckless guy! "Kilinkolin" was his nick name. The sound of dropping something metal.
Once I had the chance of having them passing me in arms length. But it was not on stage, it was on their way back to the camp. But still, the sound those cars make, even just driving through the city back home, is ridiculous 😃

F1 has superb drivers, but the WRC rally drivers are at least as good. Obviously rally is quite different from F1, but both demand a lot of the drivers to have the nerve to drive flat out. If I remember correctly Rally Finland used to be the WRC event with highest top speeds. It might still be, as you saw the speeds are amazing on the these Finnish gravel roads. Finland has always had top rally drivers and they have won many world championships. And as you said, Colin McRae was an excellent driver.
If you didn't know, the rally cars are actually road legal and the drivers drive on public roads between the stages. Also, the rally stages are driven on normal roads, but obviously they are closed off during the competition.
The best rally driver at the moment is Kalle Rovanperä, this kid has more talent than Max Verstappen. The best in history is Sebastian Loeb who has won nine consecutive World Championships and second to him is Sébastien Ogier who has eight world titles, and he is one of two drivers (together with Juha Kankkunen) to have won the World Championship with 3 different manufacturers.
You should check 2013 Rally Finland Shakedown - Latvala. Short clip, but great onboard camera angles.
Both David Coulthard and Mika Hakkinen has said that WRC drivers have a skill set that makes F1 drivers look like amateurs, a bit harsh IMO but interesting non nhe less.

When the wrc was group B the the crowds stood too close to the cars and the cars were more powerful and faster. It was even more spectacular but due to accidents it was changed.

If you go check top 10 rally drivers, depending on the list, there will be 3-5 Finnish rally drivers on them. Sebastien Loeb is the number #1 driver, but Finnish drivers have been in the top tiers for decades.
It's all about the traction feel many Finns (especially those from smaller cities, towns or villages) develop naturally driving on small dirt roads in the countryside and on slippery roads in general during winter.
I'm a city boy and I have to say I'm sometimes a bit scared when driven by my father-in-law who is originally from the country side whenever we drive on those small dirt roads because of how fast he tends to drive but he's also probably the safest driver I know, he just knows really well how to manage traction on those roads 😁

in group B era, which had the fastest and hardest cars to drive EVER, there was only 4 champions (as group B was only 4 years long..) and 3 of them were finnish ;)

I am not the biggest Rally fan, but i think you should watch some Kalle Rovanperä. He is a legend in Finland and has dominated Rally the last 2 years.
WRC is the best Motorsport in the world imo the cars are absolutely insane and the drivers are the best on the planet, and speed wise they aren't the fastest cars they touch 140mph on some sections but they look and feel like they are going much faster (I take part in some amateur rallies about one a year)
Although rallying is just a race against time, I find it much more interesting than Formula 1. They really have to come up with more ideas to make F1 interesting again. However, I think there are too few vehicles in the WRC. I prefer to watch races in the German Championship or the European Rally Championship (ERC). My favorite driver is Jan Kopecký (there are a few really wild onboard videos) and my favorite vehicle is Skoda Fabia

also at WRC events you can usually get close to the pit areas to watch as the cars get worked upon. i ithink it was colins final rally was in Perth sadly he was disqualified for his team swapping out a transmission which was deemed illegal, BUT they were given forty minutes to fix the issue, my parents were there and said the poor pit crew were in tears as they desperately tried to drop and swap the transmission, sadly just falling short and a heartbreaking end to the great mans WRC career RIP Mr Mcrea, gone but never forgotten.
The best thing for me is that Rally didnt really change much. not overregulated like other racing series that just got insanely boring, or vanished.

You should start watching the rally from the time of group B. At that time, the cars even reached a speed of over 250 km on gravel. The current cars have a good platform but an inefficient motor.
Yeah, it's nuts. And so awesome. Even better in real life. And if you think current cars and drivers are incredible, check some videos from 80's Group B rally races.

Rally finland was the fastest wrc track in the world, don´t know if it still is , love it, but not visited finland for rally but swedish rally many times , super high speed on snow
WRC Rallies are crazy (good), but I think that the Isle of Man motorcycle races are the number one of crazy (goods) motorsports events.

Rally is more like analogy in a digital world. F1 drivers are good, but its very hi-tec. Rally is more about driver acting on instinct. Better drivers in rally in my opinion.
Sorry Mate! Take a look at Group B, from 1983 and onwards.
Those were missiles on wheels, literally. I was there in 1986, and looking at Hannu Mikkola and Michelle Mouton, driving a Audi Quattro in 200? km/h, that was sound and sight! Those cars shot out a meter long fire from exhaust pipes, when shifting gears, and sliding sideways, at that speed.
They had to change, almost every stage from then, "too dangerous". And, btw, Colin, has his own crest, still, I think, holding the longest jump in the world.

Longest jump in WRC was set by Sébastien Loeb at Rally Turkey 2010 he jumped 85m (278.8 ft)
Ok, but as far as I know, having driven on those, nowadays cut of from "Thousand Lakes Rally" roads, McRae, still have the record? I drove in those jumps in Myhinpää, 😲, and boy, was that fun. Walter Röhl refused to drive in Finland:"If I want to fly, I take a plane, not a car", or something similar. He did not drive Audi there. But the record stands for Finland?

@@outsider7658 Colin's Crest was at Rally Sweden when it was held down in Värmland but was relocated in 2021 up to Västerbotten were i live and Umeå to ensure Rally Sweden is hold on ice and snow becouse of warm weather and lack of ice and snow down in Värmland..... a bit sad they not jumping on Colin´s crest anymore...
Thierry Neuville have jumped 75m at Rally Finland "Thousand Lakes Rally" in 2022 not sure if thats the record of that rally? Thierry Neuville also holds the record for longest jump at Colin´s crest 2015 with 44m.

This is rally 1 is a great start to watching rally videos, a bit disturbing at times with the crashes... But it's mostly fun. It's by mr.M, and he has loads of other rally videos.
Colin McRae was a huge name in these tracks. He also aced these like his competitors
F1 is more a competition sport, while rally has better show elements IMO.
It's very exciting to watch rally live. Pick a good spot, and compare the drivers in how they take the turns. But it's harder to follow who's winning, and it's harder to follow on TV.
While with F1, it's very straightforward to see who's in the lead, and everything is about following the couple of cars in the front and waiting for any overtaking actions. This gives a way better TV experience but gives less excitement when watched live IMO.
There is a Top Gear segment "Mika Hakkinen Teaches Captain Slow to Drive", it's about rally and Finnish mentality. You should check it out.

In Finland "B" drivers license is the one that majority of the people will get as their first drivers license. I'm not counting tractor or moped licenses. That allows all 18 years of age to drive a non-commercial passenger cars or a van up to a certain tonnage. One of the final tests after written, simulation and practical driving tests is to get atleast 25m jump on the official dirt road course with your dads old car. If you dont have a dad or do not posses a car, government will provide you with one. That is how World Rally Championships group B was created.
