Wow!!! New to your channel and to GMRS programing. I just got a new UV-9G today after buying a UV-5R last week which I'll also be programming with CHIRP. Thanks a lot for this tutorial man, super simple, easy to understand, right to the point. Awesome!!!
So glad it helped and thank you so much for the support.
I was in the Signal Corps while in the ARMY, but oh my, that was in the last Millennia. So this is all new to me, and I am doing my best to get up to speed on GMRS and loving everything I can find on it. I have the Baofeng UV9G and have gotten my GMRS license two days ago. So any other tutorial on this radion is greatly appreciated. Still trying to wrap my head around setting up repeaters. In the Army, our repeater setup was quite a bit different. But anything you are willing to post will be helpful for a beginner.
I like the idea of a repeater video, I will put that on my list thanks!
im surprised you not get the ham license's sales pitch by the sad hams i ran comms in the army too and no interest in getting a ham license then or now. sorry sad hams stick your license in your ear.
Great quick guide, thank you. 👏
Great video. More on this radio and chirp would be great. Also repeaters
Thank you. Very good tutorial!
You are a life saver. Thank You!
Thank you for the great info!
Glad it was helpful!
I cnntinue to have trouble programming my UV-9R with Chirp, partly due to my ignorance of the process. If I want to enter a channel that is a repeater, what is the process for that? For identifying/programming the tx and rx freq for instance? Thanks
what is the difference between the DIY and repeater channels? I inputted a local repeater on mine and it would only receive. How do I set it up for a local repeater so I can talk to family further away but within range of the repeater and what channel should I use? I think it uses 462.675 (tone:141.3)
i´m trying to use Chirp with a Baofeng Bf 918 Uv but is not in the Chirp List... is there any way you can help me? Thanks
Great information. Did you need a driver for the USB port? I'm using a MAC and I have the Chirp software loaded but it will not recognize the radio.
What is the ideal way to find active local GMRS active repeaters?
Thank you for the video! I am still having issues skipping the NOAA channels. Keeps telling me out of range and wont let me skip. Worked great on the DIY channels. Any suggestions on how to fix the NOAA?
Mine shows as CH340. And there is no "RADIO" menu in my chirp.
The latest version of CHIRP does not work on the UV-9G when the selected radio is UV-9R
my top button by light has changed to FM/Freq, where setting to change it back to LIGHT button?
Thanks for the tutorial. Do you have any tips and tricks for entering channels through the keypad for the UV-9G, because I don't have access to a computer, laptop or tablet. Thanks for sharing.
Good idea I will put in the list.
Hi. I need to copy channels with frequencies from a Uv5 R to a UV 9R plus. How do I do that?
I cannot get chirp to work with this radio..I cannot download the software..it`s not in the manual and I cannot get any support
I just got Chirp for my new UV-9G and while trying to program a repeater I'm supposed to program in a DCS RX and TX tones with N or R, but Chirp's NN, RR, NR, RN has me stumped. Any tips? Thanks!
Great video, but not letting me open the on my pc.
Having issues with Chirp, when I connect my GMSR-9R, this is the message I get from Chirp when I first try to download from radio?
“Error reading data from radio: not the amount of data we want.”
I tried UV-9R and UV-9G as my radio model, too.
Any suggestions? I’m lost!
The CHIRP for Mac is not working.... that sucks
Quick question - the UV-9 series of radios...why can't we actually name a channel and have it show up when programming via CHIRP? It works on the UV-5 series but channel names don't show up on my 9R Pro. Thanks!
Yes they should
this is perfect! I'm new to radios like this and don't have a clue where to begin. This helps with the setup! Would you be able to make a video showing suggestions on setup? I would image the default channels are heavy used..? Am I able to setup a private channel and how would a user know they are choosing the right one?
You can setup channels with PL tones. This stops you from hearing others without the tone but not private per-say because they can still hear you.
@@offgrid.technology This would work! I'll figure out how to do that. Appreciate the info
When I go through the process I keep getting this error message, saying " ERROR READING DATA FROM RADIO NOT THE AMOUNT OF DATA WE WANT" , any ideas?
I had the same chad to blow away the radio data with a factory reset and it worked.
It appears you can't program Repeaters on the keypad on the UV-9G. I've programmed plenty of radios but when I do this on the keypad for the UV-9G it won't transmit. It does work on Chirp however
I have e experienced similar issues my self
What cable do you use and do you know if a kenwood style adapter with a chipped cable will work
Use the BAOFENG cable. It has a chip in it. and yes the Kenwood style plug. Bought mine on Amazon. But make sure it says BAOFENG on the cable.
My computer is a older laptop, and I am new to gmrs and trying to learn. Can I use my laptop with Windows 7 to do chirp?. If not my daughter has a laptop that is running Chrome , but from what I've read chrome don't work for chirp. Please let me know. Thank you for your time. I like your presentation.
I believe chirp will work fine on Windows 7
Unfortunately it does not correct the issue of Channel 15 not working the UV-9G.
There’s a release now to do just that.
Can chirp modify the power setings like on uv b5 with factory software in test mode ?
Should be able too if you mean change from low to high power.
@@offgrid.technology yes i mean on the radio but the baofeng uv b5 factory software has an option must enter KT511 passw and then can adjust vhf low power hi power uhf lo power hi power an squelch to i cant find this option the uv 9r factory software on the WP 970I
@@offgrid.technology how you mean ? yes on the handset you have three power setings lo 1 w mid 2w hi 5w i want to change that like on the uv b5 i did the lo power seting was 1w i have changed that to 500 mw im asking is anybody know where to find this option in the programing sowfware chirp or WP970I ? by the way i found that these cheap usb propgraming cables wont work with the uv 9r my solution win xp and home made programing cable with two npn transistors and rs 232 port
thanks for posting, unfortunately when I connect in device manager it says the link doesn't support windows 11, ugh
Have to pickup a cheap laptop at a yard sale or flea market just for downloads like this. I run windows 10 and have no problem.
@@williamsmith9287 Use a Virtual Machine with Windows 10 or Linux and then pass the USB device to the Virtual Machine, let me know if you think this would be a good video to make :) -Alan
Is there any preprogrammed chirp backupfiles for uv-9r plus to download, im new to this.....
I could dump mine and list a link for you. I will try and do that tomorrow for you.
@@offgrid.technology thanks.
Can the UV-9 G be unlocked to access all the dual band ham channels?
ua-cam.com/video/m1TH9FMGL58/v-deo.html I believe this should work, this worked on my uv-9r pro
Any luck?
Let us know lol
I have a uv-9r pro and i am trying to proghram frs/gmrs and it wont let me upload
nice beginning, but i need a step-by-step on adding GMRS freqs, to a new UV-9Rpro. I see in chirp you can actually grab these at Radio>Import from stock config> US FRS and GMRS Channels and presumably you can then just upload them into your radio overwriting all the default stuff. Similarly, you can grab some Repeters and more importantly the NOAA channels and upload them. Seem that if I want the NOAA channels say at the top of the channel range like you have them, I can just change the channel number and then upload, right? Anyway kind of overwhelming and just want to be able to listen to NOAA and other channels. Thanks for your videos. EDIT...... May have figured this out a little more. Copied blocks of frequencies (FRS GMRS and NOAA) from the source above and then could cut and paste them around in chirp and then uploaded into radio. Will have to see if I can hear anything on the NOAA channels as a test.
Error reading data from radio: not the amount of data we want. Newest version.
Just fyi to potential buyers. There's a good chance you will get a UV-9G where the antenna cannot seat correctly and NOAA/FM radio won't work. Good luck
Thanks for the heads up, I have not seen this but not surprised. The Quality Control on Baofeng is normally crap :)
The same applies to the original UV 5R today. China responded by saying they removed chip for FM radio because of shortages. Covid lockdown had a knock on effect on production.
These vidoes are all the same. Showing a screen we can al clearly see for ourselves yet when it comes to a specific DCS code entry no one shows how that's done. Baofeng software nor chirp has an option to plug an exact DCS code in the field, not a one. Frustrating. I'm beginning to feel YT is simply regurgitated content anymore. OR! buy a $350 Wouxan 1000G and do it right off the bat.
You make a really great point. I’ll add it to my video ideas. Your looking for something like field programming?
Plus I am real curious. See Here we have GMRS repeaters everywhere. I'm a member of a group that does repeater tones for both transmit and receive. Unfortunately, they're all run by Ham operators and the only help we get is from ourselves. They dont appear to be very helpful. Ive never seen one come back to answer a question. According to what Im seeing on their page, not one of these Ham veterans have ever responded, but they want donations to their repaters. Gladly but be a human. The only help I've ever received was a guy whos is 5 days old to the group. He doesn't have the same model though. And talking about the tone numbers publicly cant be done either, so its a real conundrum. Even in a closed members-only Fb page. So Lets say for giggles I have a Repeater that requires TX tone of, DCS 145N - and RX tone of DCS 036N. Where and how is that put in the fields below. Also, my biggest question Im stumped on...I do not see a Transmit freq for a repeater in the chirp list, only receive freq in the list on CHIRP. So they always say just leave receive wide open but input the DCS transmit tone. Well where the transmit frequency in this chirp list? Well in Chirp there is no 467.725 Im completely lost. Years ago when we talke CB on side channels ther was always a guy you could drive over and toss $20 bucks at and hed help. THose epople no longer exist, wouldnt it be great if you were that guy?
What a damn mess
I need to buy a newer one to see if the issues have been fixed. If so it’s a great radio.
I just bought 2 in the last week and FM radio works and had no problems with CHIRP. Have not tried if Nagoya will fit. By the way, I used your video to figure out how to program it!
