Nate, not ready for any of this yet but like anything you need to gather information to make wise informed decisions. Sometimes I get what your saying other times you talk right over my head but that's why I'm here to learn. Plus I know there is a video resource just waiting to be reviewed over and over if necessary. I doubt you will ever quench my thirst for this kind of stuff. Thanks for all your work helping us all along this journey.

You can do an 8.8 swap in one day with no swap experience long as you can weld My first axle swap was an 8.8 into a tj. I had a shop set the gears and locker, bought the bracket kit.. and used the existing d35 for measurements to locate all the brackets.. turned out well and did it in 6-7 hours on a Sunday when I needed that daily driver to get to work Monday morning lol. Don’t second guess the trackbar location. Stick with where you first place it.. I made the mistake of placing the axle under the Jeep bolting it up and thinking I messed up the mount location as the axle was way off to one side.. I cut it fee moved it and bolted it back. Once it was under weight it would’ve been right in the first location and ended up being 1” off center in the end. Wasn’t a big deal but you won’t know if something is off unless you fully weight it. Even then you have some adjustment in the bar itself. The 8.8 is the easiest, strongest, cheapest swap there is though.
@Dirt Lifestyle I love the idea of a build series on offroad trailer/campers. I'm also very interested in you doing an alignment series. I'm looking at doing a SAS in my 01 Dakota Quad Cab, and would appreciate your approach in getting it squared up.

@@DirtLifestyle not that it totally applies but I had a super built stroker motor in my trx450 and would climb any of the steepest tree shots in the oregon dunes, at allmost an idle🤘
On the trail tire balancing, I have 6 golf balls in each of my 37in for balancing. It's what MetalTech did for years in its old Iroks, so i continued it. They drive perfect on the highway even at 80ish, and they make awesome whirring sounds as they spin down when i come to a stop.
For flashing over tunes-dealership can run the most recent update onto you ecm to return it to stock. not saying it works for everything, I did it for a used 6.0 diesel I bought that had an unknown tune on it
I'm planning an overland trailer build as well, so looking forward to how you do is compared to what I'm planning. Love your channel, I've learned so much from you. Thank you Sir.
Dude this was a wicked show and I love that you are a person that wants to do things that aren't the norm. Keep up the good work. Wish we could Fab and run stuff like you can here in Australia.
Just finished installing my 4.6 stroker into my 00 XJ, loved the simplicity behind it after weighing the options of either LS, 4bt, tdi, or OM617 swap. Noticeable difference on and off road.
Can't help but to pour with admiration from your 4.0 to ls swap input, because I'm all about the 4.0 it's been a hard transfer to go to a diesel, pros and cons to all but as far as reliability I couldn't agree more with diesel and the 4.0 , I think I'm sticking with the 4.0 for the xj, but if I had a tj, id for sure do the diesel . I love the 4.0 power , especially geared up you got a reliable 4x4 same with diesel .
Look into a stroker its really simple. Take your 4.0, swap in a 4.2 crankshaft and connecting rods (4.0 Pistons) crane or comp cam and lifters, ford5.0 24 lb injectors bam 4.5l stroker its that easy. It has all the low end torque of the 4.2 and quick revving from the 4.0. You can bore it out for a 4.6 .030 overbore or 4.7 with a .040 overbore just do a few "jeep stroker" searches.
Hell ya, DJI for the win. I'm all in with their whole ecosystem. Mavic mini, Osmo Action & I'm in love with the Pocket. Full suite of accessories...mounts, ND filters, array of lenses. People would be surprised what the pocket is capable of...you can get proper cinematic results and shots you couldn't get with a traditional gimbal.
I just finished a 4.5 stroker I'm really happy with it. I think with new pistons cam lifters 2 engines and machine work it was a little over a $1,000 and it couldn't be easier. It's almost too much power for a short wheelbase CJ with SOA and 35's. It's probably 250 horsepower and 325 ft lbs torque it comes in around 1,800 rpm and pulls hard to 4,000rpm
Thanks Matt for this. I got a kick out of you stopping mid sentence clear your throat and then pick right back up. You are a wealth of information and I appreciate you sharing it.
Love this channel, this is awesome!! Another option for balancing tires is balance beads. We use them in the big trucks at work, nice thing about the beads is your tires are always balanced, from new till the end of life, as they roll around inside where the weight is needed.
Buyers Beware! Same experience here with Coty Built. Owner of the company said 4-week lead time before I shelled out $5500. Over a year later I still din't have a complete kit (pre covid)... Doing this to one customer is crappy, but doing this as a matter of practice is disreputable, or worse.
The guy that I bought my cj7 from built a trailer for it. He used a s10 bed and put a hydraulic pump and motor in it to drive the axle. Used a front axle so the hub's will lock and unlock. Would make a great overland trailer.
I know this is a late comment on this video, but I am upgrading my 2013 Ford Escape for overlanding. No one makes any thing for it, which makes it difficult. I have a 3" lift on it with bigger bfg tires. I also threw in a bigger transmission and have plans to put in a bigger cooler. I want an "off-road" bumper, mainly the rear, for my escape. I'd like it to be as light weight as possible. I want it to be a double swing out from the center because my end gate goes up. Passenger side will hold the spare and the drive side of the bumper will hold fuel cans. I'd also like a custom front bumper with a wench mounted to it if possible. I don't have all the tools and experience to do this.
Great Q&A's Nate!! Perfect timing for tips on video gear and keeping it fun!t You and a few others (Trailrecon and Bleep nJeep) inspired me to finally get to posting on my channel, Part 1- Trailer Build, I wish I had your shop for this project :-). Keep up the great videos, cheers, from Ontario Canada. Oh yeah!! Come on Brad, do a Cummins so I can see how it's done for my JKU.
@@DirtLifestyle thank you! Many of us hobbiest don't have 220V in our shops, any chance you could review and show tips for welding with a 110V FluxCore (I guess you would have to buy one first) I think you could give us a lot better tips then what I have been able to find, cheers
Such great, informative videos. Love your jeep. I'm a jeep owner and enjoy working on them. I work at Volkswagen & your TDI swap & the performance you have is amazing. Really enjoy your content!
Being the Ford Ranger on the dana 35 ttb has some similarity out at the knuckle as the jeep here is what they do on the Ranger that might work on your jeep. Enlarge the ball joint holes on the c take a ford f150 outer and mount it. Now you have the f150 brakes, 5 bolt pattern (old style), and locking hubs. Go over to the ranger station (trs.com) and there is an article on doing this.
Loving this man. I hope you do another one. Your Dana 30 hybrid talk made me think of a question on something similar im cooking up. Thanks for a great tech-packed video!
This is the best build channel by a long shot. Very straightforward answers and very concise. Definitely looking forward to the 4.0 stroker series. Absolutely love the mechanical skills on this channel. Absolute artwork.
I have a build, and I'm stuck. 97 TJ. was cheap, and a basket case. I already pulled the body and I replaced the rockers with square tube and welded in a new front floor. The rear corners, I cut and stretched to LJ with armored corners. The rear floor is all cut out and just a couple tubes to hold everything together. I have LQ4/4L80/14b from a 2004 2500hd along with the pcm, harness and all that. The original frame wasn't much better then the body, I have a JK Unlimited Frame and I can't decide the best way to mount the body to the frame. I could get a set of JK body mounts and fab the mounts into the body to match. Or was thinking of just getting some rubber and use plates at the bottom of the roll cage that isn't built yet and sandwich the body between the roll cage and the frame. Also, front is a 87 Ford D60, swapped the 2500hd front brakes, and I have both steering gear boxes - the 2500HD and the TJ. I have a double ended ram for the steering assist, but if just go full hydro I can do triangulated front instead of parallel 3 link.
I agree on the stroker maybe being easier to build but LS has endless aftermarket support and you’re not limited to crappy mopar transmissions. GM trans are endlessly upgradable too
The aw4, ax15 and nv3550 are all great transmissions. I'm not sure all that work would be worth using a gm nv3500 or a gm 4l60e. I've never seen any evidence that these gm equivalents can withstand more of a load then their mopar counterparts. Unless you can point at some data?
Dirt Lifestyle but that’s for XJ and TJ owners. What aboutZJ and WJ people or also later year tj owners that want an auto? It’s very hard and expensive to then get an aw4 to talk to the pcm of those engines. 4L60e can be upgraded endlessly to withstand 600hp if you want
You should write a book geared toward building a TJ from stock to Diesel beast, ( It would have to be a Build for dummies for me). I would buy it! Keep the videos coming. They are helping me greatly
GREAT ADVISE absolutely love my Golden 4.6 stroker engine. I have done LOTS of engine swaps for customers & friends, & the inline 6 stroker set up is WAY more easier and less expensive & i can smoke my 37" tires
5:20 Wagoneer 44s would be a good option as well, keeps the width almost stock. (You can also swap the rear for an Izuzu Rodeo Dana 44 (96-97 I believe) and get stock disc brakes, same bolt pattern, 4.10 or 4.30 gears, and a limited slip, only hang up is wheel studs, which is easily remedied (recommend matching front to the rear, izuzu used bigger studs)
I put an axle from a rodeo in my cj7. Very easy swap and seems like a pretty tough axle. I measured the axle shafts and they were just under an inch and a half thick. And only 80 bucks for the whole thing, disk brakes and all at the junkyard!
They’re the front and rear are both LP. The earlier model has a smaller U joint size which made the hpd30 axles stronger, but it also means the R&P is the same strength. You can run later model or rcv shafts in it, but at that point you could do the same with the hpd30
You can find the Isuzu 44 rear with 4.10, 4.30 and 4.56. Depends on the model. I've been swapping junkyard Trooper parts onto my Rodeo for a couple years and I think the 4cyl manual Troopers are the ones with 4.56 gears from the factory. Also good to get 98 or newer if you plan to do 3 link or 4 link. The Rodeo has a 4 link. The Trooper has a 3 link.
This channel is doing great ever since you went full time, such great content. But you’re always on the old stuff, what’s your thoughts on the Jeep JL and axles they come with. Can the new M186(dana30) hold up to a 37 like people have done previously on JKs?
Triangulate as much as packaging allows. Don’t feel you have to be a True double but aim for as close as you can. The lowers are really the important part. Get what ever you can from the uppers and you’ll be fine with a 4 link.
Amazon has good prices on Ls harnesses. I'd pull that plastic loom off and get some nice braided loom. Ls swaps are "easy". It's only as easy as you can make it. If your application is all bolt on than yes easy. If you have to weld and you don't know how, not so easy. Take the 88-98 chevy trucks, I've done several, they're easy. Jeeps, there is a little more involved. I like your TDI swap Nate. I have a 91 yj that I am going to do a frame off "restoration". I really want to do the TDI swap in it.
Great video as always. I’d love to see you build an off road trailer! I’ve been building one off and on for about 9 months (mostly a weekend project). I converted an old utility trailer. I’ve towed mine probably a few thousand miles on and off road, and it’s held up well so far. I ended up installing the Timbren axle-less suspension and love it. Gives the trailer crazy clearance even with 31” tires, and the ride is pretty smooth. Tracks well too.
Watching this video and hearing you say you were overwhelmed with questions, I had the thought it could be very easy for you to become the "Scotty Kilmer" of the 4x4 world. Once a month segments ?
Great video. But now I got a couple of questions. I have a 1986 f250 single cab long bed, with a turbo 6.9 idi going to a zf 5spd trans, to the factory bw1356 transfer case and then to a full floater dana 60 rear and ttb 44 front with 4.10 gears. I want to make this a general purpose off roader that can still tow gooseneck. I'm planning on going to a 35 10.50 tire or 35 12.50, 4 inch lift to clear the tires and want to put some type of limited slip or lockers in. And I'm planning to put a 12k winch and heavy duty front bumper for it Now here's my questions. 1. Do you think the ttb 44 will be strong enough or do I need to go straight axle (ie. Dana 60 out of a f350). And 2. Would the Eaton true trac be fine in both axles or a combo of selectable locker in the rear and true trac up front be better. Any info would be great thanks.
I know you thought this wasn't an interesting video, but it was for me. I watched it all and loved it. I think it would be great if you did one of these every so often. I would love to see a full camp trailer build. I'm hoping to make one someday as well. I recently paid $300 for a set of 2017 JK axles for my TJ. Dana 30 HP and Dana 44 Rear. I hope this was a good deal. (They didn't come with brakes or knuckles). I'm planning to truss them somehow(surprised at how much brackets and trusses cost online) Any recommendations for what to buy or what would make this job easier would be most welcome. Thanks.
To all those who are wondering, Ford 8.8 axles came in 3.08, 3.27, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, and some 4.56 gear sets from the factory. The 4.56’s are found only in explorers though.
I'm doing a budget build 1990 XJ with around 4.5" of lift and 33"s for now and have a question regarding dana 30 upgrades. My line of thinking is truss, gusset, regear and possibly and aussie locker. I am thinking I should stick with 27 oem spline axle shafts (from later xj after cad delete) to engineer the failure point to be the axle shaft instead of the ring and pinion and just carry spares. Considering this is a budget build and I don't want to go overboard is this a good way to go? Would mostly be a trail/mud rig with light rocks from time to time.

Thank u lot of great questions answered will watch these any day, learn a lot form your channel thank keep up the hard work thanks
On the trail tire balancing, I have 6 golf balls in each of my 37in for balancing. It's what MetalTech did for years in its old Iroks, so i continued it.
They drive perfect on the highway even at 80ish, and they make awesome whirring sounds as they spin down when i come to a stop.
Perfect title!!!
In lake Havasu, Az. Thinking of building up a ZJ I have.... Come on over n give me a hand!..... Lol
I gotta say Nate, after I watch your videos I have no questions... you get the point across!
Thank you!
Thank you buddy 👊
The humongous caveat when your talking Dana 44 durability is shafts. If you aren't running aftermaket shafts you effectively have a Dana 30.
Amazing videos. Can’t wait for the overland trailer build. 👍
Love all the Advice Tips and Tricks, Time and Effort. Excited to see the Trailer Build It will definitely Help me
I just finished a 4.5 stroker I'm really happy with it.
Thanks for videos just got my first jeep Saturday looking forward to getting it in order
Its unbelievable. And they always treated me like I was being unreasonable lol.
Thanks for answering my question and the cameras Nate. I'll definitely look into the Osmo cameras. Keep on doing you!!
This channel took off. I remember when LBDT Ep. 1 came out on the other channel. Loving it like always.
🤘 good luck with the channel buddy!
@@DirtLifestyle thank you! Many of us hobbiest don't have 220V in our shops, any chance you could review and show tips for welding with a 110V FluxCore (I guess you would have to buy one first) I think you could give us a lot better tips then what I have been able to find, cheers
Nate you rock, keep it up. Your videos are very informative
Such great, informative videos. Love your jeep. I'm a jeep owner and enjoy working on them. I work at Volkswagen & your TDI swap & the performance you have is amazing. Really enjoy your content!
Axis industries is the go to for the r2.8 components. You can order a turnkey kit from them for almost any jeep.
I probably should! I've had a better reaction then I thought I would
@@DirtLifestyle in agree! And totally not just because I want you to answer my question on your video or anything. ;)
Everything about your channel has been great and i have learned a lot , thanks for all your work
I recommend Jeep Speed Shop (JSS) in CA for v8 Swaps. They make kits for Hemis and LSs.
Nice job Nate. Thanks for sharing more about video cameras
Stoker build series!
seconded
Third!
4th I did one for my jeep it's crazy simple and my single best upgrade hands down. Plenty of low end torque and (stock)v8 power on the top end
@@danfay4860 i have a 4.0 in my rig and I average 15 mpg on the highway. Did this drastically change your mpg?
Fellow plumber from Oregon I’m here for the algorithm. Love the content
That's gonna be my route with my XJ. My uncle's been running Waggy 44's for about 10 years now with 37s on his XJ with no issues.
Good luck finding waggy 44's or even the Rodeo 44.
Doing a Jeep WJ with my friend on this channel. Putting the 4.0 back in it with a rebuild kit!
Stroke it!!!
This channel is doing great ever since you went full time, such great content. But you’re always on the old stuff, what’s your thoughts on the Jeep JL and axles they come with. Can the new M186(dana30) hold up to a 37 like people have done previously on JKs?
They are strong on paper but I wouldn't run that axle without deleting the center disconnect and using a chromoly shaft 👍
Thanks!! I'll check it out. And I'll be waiting for rover vid!
Think I have been in lockdown too long long lol, i kept washing your background was a window or nature related. 😄
Thank you for this video.
Great answers and yes , I'm going with your suggestion.
Now you just need to do that 4.0 stroker series 😁
Thank you for taking your time for this. I got some pointers like stroker vs ls. Thank you
Great video. And I'm planning to put a 12k winch and heavy duty front bumper for it
Now here's my questions. 1. Do you think the ttb 44 will be strong enough or do I need to go straight axle (ie. Dana 60 out of a f350). And 2. Would the Eaton true trac be fine in both axles or a combo of selectable locker in the rear and true trac up front be better. Any info would be great thanks.
Thanks for the vid man. Right on with the content
Thanks.
love this type of info video every once in a while. always great content Nate
Thanks for the advice on everything. Great video!!
Love your videos man. Such good quality!! Hope to see you and Brad do more together!! What’s your thoughts on a BIG overlander 7.3 Ford Excursion????
Awesome info session! Hope you keep these up!
Thanks for the video! Always good content. I like that you don't always jump for the bigger X (axles, engine, etc).
+1 on the stroker. Great advice.
To all those who are wondering, Ford 8.8 axles came in 3.08, 3.27, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10, and some 4.56 gear sets from the factory. The 4.56’s are found only in explorers though.
Really looking forward to seeing that offroad trailer build series
I'm doing a budget build 1990 XJ with around 4.5" of lift and 33"s for now and have a question regarding dana 30 upgrades. My line of thinking is truss, gusset, regear and possibly and aussie locker. I am thinking I should stick with 27 oem spline axle shafts (from later xj after cad delete) to engineer the failure point to be the axle shaft instead of the ring and pinion and just carry spares. Considering this is a budget build and I don't want to go overboard is this a good way to go? Would mostly be a trail/mud rig with light rocks from time to time.
Love the back ground. I’m currently starting a pallet wall in the guest house.
