Applejack was being a complete jerk in this episode. You can be honest without insulting people and being rude. And the resolution wasn't good either. Applejack could've still been just as critical of the clothes as she was before. The problem wasn't that she was criticizing the clothes and hated them, the problem was how she conveyed her feelings.

Applejack was really done dirty in this and the previous season, two of the worst Applejack episodes (this one and Applejack's "Day" Off) were in these two seasons. Applejack episodes can be REALLY good, one of the best episodes in the series (The Perfect Pear) was an Applejack episode. But then there's episodes like this one in which she's a major jerk and totally out of character. Basically the same as Spike episodes. Spike and Applejack deserve better when it comes to episodes focusing on them.

This episode always reminds me of the meme years back that Rainbow Dash and Applejack had their elements swapped. Dash is absolutely the type of personality to take honesty to a brutal extreme, while AJ couldn't be more loyal if she tried.

ive hears people say its better that applejack lies sometimes because if she only told the truth then her charecter would become one-note and boring. I imagine there would be interesting depth for a charecter who lies and yet is still truthful, so I think it could still fit if rainbow was the element of honesty instead. though I think the current element barrers put a spin on things as its very apparent that applejack is loyal to her family and so being the element of honesty gives her some depth outside of that.@@elizabethrose644

bruh it's like this episode is a direct reaction to that. like "NO! SEE, SHE IS THE HONEST ONE!!!"
It's not that Apple Bloom had to spend an entire hour picking up those few apples, it's that AJ punished her for the mistake of trying to wear a fancy hat with an extra hour of unpaid labor.
Fr. AJ could've aimed her apples into Apple Bloom's basket, but she was the one who scattered them everywhere when she was bucking

I’d like to offer a counterpoint to the whole “Applejack’s hat isn’t special anymore because she has more than one”. The point being made here is that Applejack’s hat was thought to be special because it’s presumably her dad’s hat however she show makes it obvious she has many of this one type of hat therefore debunking that theory. However I think this makes the hat more special. The hat itself may not be a hand me down from her father however it’s extremely likely she wears this style of hat because she saw her dad wearing it and it’s her way of keeping him close to her, she only wears that one type of hat - a style of hat nobody else seems to wear, and has stocked up on what is probably now an out of date style of hat so that she has enough of them to last a lifetime which is rlly cute. She even insists on trying to incorporate/wear this hat during fancy occasions perhaps not because she just likes it but because it’s her way of keeping her dad close forever. It’s also possible that she does have her dad’s hat but doesn’t wear it since it’s too precious and it’s probably really old by now
Or maybe all those hats used to belong to Bright Mac, so they're all special to AJ in a way
And for all we know she keep her dad actual hat in a safe place

Yes AJ could've been nicer, but the fault is absolutely on Rarity. First rule of leadership, everything is your fault. Rarity didn't say "Be honest but respectful." She just said to be honest. She chose a bad judge while giving said judge unclear instructions and false confidence.
Dude you absolutely don't have to tell a fully grown woman to not be an asshole when giving critique.
That's basic common sense and, because LittleShy clearly despises Rarity, would have been critized as Rarity not trusting Applejack to have social grace.
You should never tell. A grown adult. That you shouldn't take someone's artwork and shake it hard enough to ruin it completely. That's something a grade schooler would do, or apparently Hollylock if your shitty BoJack review is any indicator.
THIS. I was mad during the episode because of this specific moment and was waiting for a sin for that. AJ KNEW she couldn't be a judge, and Rarity TOLD HER she just had to be honest, AJ just followed her instructions.
Apple jack is about tradition, so she should know "treat others as you want to be treated" but she goes crazy over applebloom being "none traditional"
I’m pretty sure it was implied to be respectful and to critique not criticize. But rarity did push something on applejack that she wasn’t on board with so both of them are at fault.
@@charcoalsieg3466 Yup. If the episode concluded that both were at fault, it would've been a great episode. But they treated it as if AJ was wrong, and poor Rarity was in tough spot because of her, completely ignoring the fact that SHE created this situation.
One thing that I feel could’ve fixed this episode is calling back to the scene where Applejack loses her cool due to Hoity Toity and Photo unable to decide on belts that look identical to one another. During the montage where she’s working to fix her mistake. She takes the time to discuss the accessories.
Applejack: Ah believe these here belts look exactly the same, yet y’all insist that they’re different. Can ya explain?
To which Hoity Toity or Photo Finish would explain their views. Pointing out that while yes, they are practically the same belt to the naked eye, each one has minor imperfections and flaws that either contrasts or compliments the look, such as a different color tone, a minor scuff or something like that.
This would help AJ to better understand how designers such as Rarity and critics like them view fashion and design.
I feel like this episode will be one giant "Element of Honesty, everyone" sin.
When Twilight said "my friends have turned into COMPLETE JERKS!" back in S2, I bet she didn't think it would have a carry on effect.
The most unhinged thing about this episode was that door that tried to get away but then snapped back into place when it was discovered trying to get away (and the episode even included Rarity's randomly teleporting home).

Fr each and every single feather stitched with such care and though and consideration and this annoying ass judge who can’t even do her job properly cuz she was raised on a farm just ruins the whole thing because “you don’t need feathers on yer head!!!”
Aww, my sin didn't make it in. It bugged me how Rarity never brought anything up to Applejack that her critiquing was counter-productive after Green Isn’t Your Color had her Pinkie promise to never keep her feelings bottled up again for the person who needs to hear it until it was potentially too late.
The sad thing is, there really was a winner, and we all knew who it should have been. Inky Rose's designs were at least functional designs that would cater to Apple Jack's interests, it should have been her. She took the coward's way out because she didn't want to discourage anyone. No, break some hearts like you were doing all episode!
Personally I couldn't even blame Applejack in this episode. Yeah she was kinda mean about it but when push comes to shove you're putting a full-time apple farmer in the position of judging high fashion and expecting her to give constructive criticism when she can't even tell what specific parts she's supposed to be criticizing. It's like when my mom and I watch Project Runway or Making the Cut. The high fashion people are trying to decide between stripes and sequence for the silhouette of the outfit meanwhile my mother bluntly says "it doesn't matter they're both ugly." It's all in the eye of the beholder
To this day, Many people in the fandom call this one of the worst Applejack episode and even I think so. AJ was acting like a total jerk in fact I often like to compare this episode to "Putting Your Hoof Down" because just as Fluttershy learned that there's a difference between being assertive and just plain being a jerk, AJ learned the difference between criticism and just being plain mean.
But the episode does have moments that I enjoy, Like the scene when Rarity plays the guitar. She absolutely shredded on that thing even making Pinkie Pie's friz freak again just like it did in "The Mane Attraction!" And my two new favorite characters from this episode was Inky Rose and Lily Lace they were both adorable!
And of course it was especially good to see Hoity Toity and Photo Finish again, Because as I said before absolutely no episode involving fashion would be complete without those two characters!
In conclusion, This episode may be one of AJ's worst but at least she learns her lesson in the end and thankfully the lesson is a good one, I mean I don't condone Applejack's behavior but the lesson she learns in this episode is a good one!

Although two of The Ponies in "Putting Your Hoof Down" Deserved The Bad Treatment, They were purposely blocking The Bridge and Chatting and They said in a Minute and kept rudely sitting there.

As much as I hate this episode, there really are too many people that call their rudeness as being honest or "telling it like it is". I wouldn't be surprised if one of the writers had to deal with one of those people and it inspired this episode.
I feel like Rarity owes Applejack an apology just as much as Applejack did. Rarity should have known Applejack wouldn’t be a great judge and should have admitted she was setting her friend up to disappoint her. What did Applejack know about fashion and high society that made her qualified to be a judge. If she was inviting herself to judge the contest that would be one thing but Rarity was insisting she be the judge. Therefore, Applejack’s candor was to be expected.

Man, I remember LOVING these when I was a kid. At the time, even though I was part of the show's primary age demographic, I thought the brony community was so cool. I loved all of the art, the music, and videos like these. As I got older, it helped me keep in mind that it doesn't matter if your interests are supposedly cringe or childish or anything like that. You should be able to freely enjoy the things that make you happy, regardless of others expectations or judgement.
I'm an adult now, and seeing that these videos are still being made is *really* heartwarming. Thanks for everything you do, man

The real sin is that Apple Jack is right about 90% of her criticisms. She doesn't convey it well, especially as time goes on, but her points are highly valid. Buttons _would_ take forever hooves or not, and as nice as the feathers are, if they can be easily shaken out then imagine what a gust of wind would do. But no, just like in _Bats_ because her judgments are harsh, she's completely and inarguably wrong! 😡

I used not to like honest apple but now I like the episode because Strawberry Sunrise was funny when she said she didn't like apples that had worms on them. I think that's what she meant but I do think Applejack was still mean to the judges and their designs I really love the designs that the pony judges made like Lily Lace's feather hat, Inky Rose's hoodie and Inky Rose's pants that has holes on them. And I like Rarity's guitar skills in this episode too.

this is really random but I've just got off the part about the hat, does anyone remember the episode with AJ and rarity on a friendship quest? somewhere near the end her hat was all torn up, rarity threw it away and bought her the exact same one in looks anyway, it's not the same hat so it's not that special, orrr she just wears that kind of hat to be like her dad but you know haha

As someone who takes fashion seriously there is ALOT of wrongs in this episode and i understand that this is a kid's show but fuck it
1. Theme - what the hell is the theme? fuck around and find out? if ur gonna hold a fashion show/contest, there MUST be a theme. Is it for spring?winter?fall? are u showcasing ready to wear or couture? (aka the ones made out of self-expression and not meant for practicality) If its couture then get applejack out, if its ready to wear shes perfect and Applejack is completely right abt Lily and Inky's pieces, if the contest is supposed to be ready to wear then feathers and excessive buttons arent something they should be doing, ready to wear clothes are..(its in the name)
2. What the hell is Rarity selling in her boutique - who is the target audience, who are the people shes selling for, her contestants have contrasting styles: elegant chic, retro future and gothic. What exactly is she selling and why are they all so different? Ive only seen Rarity make elegant chic clothes, since when was she catering to retrofuture/goth people?!
3. Why did they all win - Theres nothing wrong with losing in fashion contests, it only means u have an advantage (in this one they get to sell ur pieces to Rarity's boutique) but fashion show/contests are literally free promo. like hello pony Karl Lagerfeld and pony Anna Wintour personally judged ur pieces and theyre all left in awe, even if u didnt win thats a big win, ppl will recognize u as the mfer that got personally voted by an important name in the fashion industry. personally let Inky win since her clothes are the most practical ones even tho they sort of fall under a specific style thats not at all practical
4. No one explained nothing to Applejack - it wouldve been less chaotic if Rarity just explained to Applejack that fashion is a reflection of an individual's identity being expressed through the things they wear, which wouldve given Applejack an actual insight on fashion.
Also note: Both Rarity and Applejack are in the wrong. Rarity's fashion contest is a MESS and she didnt communicate to Applejack well, even a fashion expert would be so all over the place if they have to judge a contest without knowing what to expect. Applejack is a jerk for saying fashion is ridiculous when her hat is the reason why her design is recognizable, and that hat was designed by someone, also i never liked her honesty bc u can be honest without hurting ppls feelings, its weird this was in season 7 where twi already had wings and they all became a representation of an element yet she doesnt know how constructive criticism works

She's very much forgetting that these clothes are for different occasions. They might not be practical for one task, but they might be just fine for the occasions and tasks they were designed for. They weren't all designed to get ready quick for a day of chores at the farm. If they were, I'm pretty sure they would go a different route.
