The reason that the breaks activate, is that he reached max speed (Of what it currently can run, with curr. voltage etc) and the brakes activates automaticly for just a little bit.
It's annoying as hell, but that's just how it is. Even when you hack it (scooterhacking.org) and gets it up to 31-38 km/h (depending on ES2 or ES4) it still does it.

Love this review. Totally got a 'Topgear' vibe of it. Great filming, love the drone filming at the end.
Bought the ES2 a little while back. (And later on the additional battery pack). It is absolutely great and gives so much joy in riding. Just fun, plain old simple fun.
The brakes thing, could have something to do with the energy recovery mode. When set on high the brake seems to react extremely sensitive and hard. Put it in weak mode and I have none at that experience anymore.
The diabolical squeaking sound is real.yes, it is no scary fairytale story, it is real! But, I service both my ES2s about every month by spraying the suspension both front and back with PTFE tefspray. It get rid of that sound immediately.
No electrical problems here at this point yet, but I must say we never use them in rain (although it should be able to with IP55 classification)
Again, love the review. Hope to see more!

Because of your review I'm now inspired to create a punk band called The Diabolical Squeaking Sounds. Our first album will be called Dark Murderous Tunnel. 😂
    Great review!!
My scooter doesn't squeak at all and I'm nearing 800km on it. You might have needed to check if the main suspension was properly tightened (one main nut/bolt underneath). Double check wherever that sound was coming from!
Regarding the issues with the electronics, I'd recommend that everyone purchase their scooter through a reputable local seller (as you suggested) so that easy returns can be made (should there be a problem).
If the scooter breaks down, is outside of the warranty period, and a person wants to repair it themselves - almost all of the parts are available to purchase online. The key elements are; The battery, the motor/wheel, and the control board. A control board is only about $35-$65 online. A motor/wheel is about $80-$100. A battery is around $45-$95. The control board is usually the issue. Lots of screws and unnecessary pieces of plastic to remove, but it's all fixable with patience.
It's not the most rugged machine, but I've gotten almost 800km out of it so far without so much as a loose screw. Even the tires are holding up pretty well. I did suffer the well known control board fuse issue that causes the headlight to trigger the brake (v1.1 to v1.3 model scooters are susceptible to that issue). I installed an external headlight to solve the problem. I'd highly recommend that every owner buy an external headlight to attach to the handlebar and not use the internal headlight to avoid a possible issue with the control board fuse. You can still activate the lights under the scooter and the back red lights via the app.
Overall I'm happy with my scooter. I think you did an excellent job reviewing it. Your reviews are quite entertaining and informative.
I hope the U.K. gets its scooter laws worked out soon!!
    Ride safe!!

The harsh breaking is for safety. Being able to break quickly is important. You can mod the firmware to be softer tho.
Also, the squeaking can be fixed easy by using some WD-40 or lock oil.

Biggest problems I had (and I had enough of this scooter and sold it to get the m365) were: 1) problems with puling up the hill, it doesn't have that much power. 2) bolts always come loose, so I had to change every bolt on the main handle beam, it becomes shaky. 3) if you lean to much forward the electronic break kicks in. 4) overheating will make it go slow, so it has a low tolerance point for heat. 5) dust gets into the speed and break handles so they get stuck when you push down so stopping becomes a pain as the spead locks in a lot of the time. 6) constand noises from the suspention 7) SUPER bad customer support, it takes them 3-4 weeks to reply and it's a "do this and this reply" even if I pre-empted them questions and they still did the same 8) if the software malfunctions and recovers you have a chance to get your max speed locked at 20km/h, now they solved it but it took them 2 months to release an update 9) no cheap spare parts 10) cannot be customised like the m365

@@dittoronaldo28 I've been using it now for around 2-3 months and I love it (my sister also got one so both of us are using it daily now), much more stable then the ES2. The only downside are the tires as they are not solid rubber tires so they can get a puncture but you can just buy some solid tires for about $12-15 per tire and get a bike specialist to install it for you (thats what I've done) and it will be the same or better then the ES2. Few points to add, the m365 battery lasts much longer for me them ES2, it is more powerful going up hill, the best thing about the m365 is that you can customise the crap out of it as the community is huge, you can find loads of cheap parts and accessories on sites like AliExpress.

I use it to go grocery shopping ive gone 4 miles to the local grocery store and back with a pack full of groceries and it saves so much time for me finding parking or waiting at red lights.. I also use it to just ride around the neighborhood all of the neighborhood kids get a kick out of it when I pass by haha but yeah its really cool actually I wish it was a little faster but it goes fast enough if you really think about it and I wish the battery lasted longer but I got the base model I suggest going for the upgraded model but you can always buy the battery attachment for 200 odd dollars. I've owned an ES2 with the extended battery since April and have put somewhere in the range of 350 miles on the scooter.
One thing I should warn people about is the lackluster customer support from Segway, I had to contact them for warranty support because the front tire tread was worn through by June and they still haven't helped me.
Also in my experience the squeaking will get worse as you use the scooter more regularly, and beware the screws will loosen themselves over time so be sure to check them regularly.

I bought mine for 340 EUR with shipment insurance included in January 19. I can't recommend to buy it for higher price as the noises from hinges or suspension are really scary. I planned to buy extended battery mainly to increase speed but with those solid tires and of course"brakes" I would probably end up dead or severely injured on our bumpy roads and bike trails or if lucky just broken scooter. Brakes are really not safe and Xiaomi has this better. With my weight 76-78 kg I can make around 12-15 km on one charge strongly depending on wind. I have driven around 600 km and so far it is working well but I feel that it is starting getting apart. I do not think that I will be able to cross 1500 km. This scooter really needs good quality roads and light driver. There are also missing indicators as you really have to hold the handle with both hands so you can't show direction on road with hand. However for the money I paid I feel that it is good experience and I got a lot of fun.

I am looking at buying an E-scooter, however I can't decide between the Ninebot by Segway Es2 (2019) and the Xiaomi M365 (2019).
I have heard good and bad about both, and love your reviews, but my deciding factor will be the tyres. I am not super knowledgeable about scooters or bikes so I'll need something relatively easy to maintain.
I will mainly be using it on paths, but would like to have something that can occassionally handle riding on mowed lawn grass. I am thinking the inflatable tyres on the Xiaomi would suit, but am wary about them being incredibly hard to change. Yet the solid tyres on the Segway may not be suited to grass riding? I am not sure. I also love the speed display on the Segway

In this review you say it doesn't have a mechanical brake but it does! There is a fender in the back that when stepped on, is meant to act as a friction brake as stated in the manual. I too have accidentally hit the electronic brake though and its a bit jarring if you aren't expecting it because the scooter will simultaneously cut the acceleration as well, whether you're holding the gas or not.

I had encountered once the Breaking Fail, the scooter turned off when I tried to brake before an intersection going downhill at almost max speed and I was not used to the foot break. It was almost like a death trap since I nearly ended up going into the busy intersection, so in front of moving cars :)

I have a chronic condition witch made it harder and harder for me to bike like we do here in the Dutch.
I have been using the one I have now and it work great only the range of 10 km is nothing for ny daily goings.
I really got the cash finally now and NEED to know if it's worth it or ho for the max version?

The Xiaomi 365 and ninebot series are made by the same company in China. You should look at the Zero series from Singapore. I’m really interested in the 8x, duel 800 watt motors, but the Zero 9 is comparable to the ninebot ES4 and Xiaomi, but has better suspension bigger battery and 500 watt motor. The people who make the Zero series also make the Inokim, less power but also much lighter.

I bought one and later bought the extra external battery converting the scooter into a ES4. The first month I had no problems with the scooter. I was grate going further and in a more fast speed. Later I started having problems with both batteries not sinking together. On the external battery the 4 power level Leeds keeps flashing and the scooter slows down even slower like it doesn’t even have the extra battery on. Iv got it in the shop now where I bought it from and it’s still under guarantee and I want to get a refund. Iv taken the scooter back to the shop to many times with the same problems. I looked at the Ninebot Max and it has a much better range. I’m on a tight budget and bought the scooter so I don’t have to spend so much money on travelling by city buses. I was walking in the city and saw 2 Lime sckooters, both Ninebot Max’s. One had suspension and the other didn’t. You don’t usual see Ninebot Max’s in the shop with suspension.

They were also illegal in DK a few years ago, now we can drive on them, and the helmet thing is also a requirement here in DK, I will NEVER drive with that piece of plastic on my head, I guess it's my own problem if I choose to hit the head, when that has been said, there are plenty of people who play police and meddle in everything but their own lives, it has never been a problem in my 57 years that people rode bicycles without a helmet, etc., but suddenly it's a problem if you don't have the ridiculous piece of plastic on. If you want to ride with it fine, but TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF and let others do what they want...
I think those who meddle in whether people drive with helmets are the same as those who recently also had to meddle in whether others walked with diapers over their mouths or not, these people were dubbed "coronas witnesses"

Because it is a budget scooter. Anything under £400 is your staple scooter that most fleet companies use because they are considered ‘budget’ with decent performance. Mid range comes in at 500-800 with devices like the ninebot max. Anything over that you’re getting into high end.
