Thanks for the the back up. People need to realize that the days of the FD can do no wrong are over. We all must share the road and drive with the safety of others first in our mind.
In most departments that I know of the fire engine is only used as a first responder or assistance in manpower. Also in serious accidents we clean up the spills of engine fluids and make sure there is no risk of fire. Also in serious accidents we assist medics if the driver or passenger needs to be cut out of the car.
here we do run red lights when we see that traffic has stopped. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to arrive on scene within the 10 minutes max response time given by law, if the scene was in the last corner of our city. At the present time we reach 80 to 90% of the city within 6 minutes at an average speed of 40 mph
You do know the driver is trained in emergency driving I think he knows what to do when you drive an ambulance or fire truck you'll how difficult the job is
Nice parking job on scene! I'm a little worried about those EMS'ers though... It appears they have no working relationship with the Fire? A shame, it makes life/calls so much easier. The pt ultimately benefits!
Are your chances better if the fire department is really close by? There's 2 fire depts very close by where i live, but i've seen a few house fires where the house couldnt be saved and was a total loss, there was even a house that was less than 200 feet away from one of the stations but it was totaled. The houses in my area are VERY old, so i dont know if that contributes to anything or not.
I know you wrote this 4 years ago, but I'm here to answer that lol. As being apart of Hazleton City, I have learned that certain stations cover certain areas. We cover the city, Hazle Township covers the township and West Hazleton covers West Hazleton pretty much. There are times where we do need to call for backup and we call Hazle Township or West Hazleton, but it's not that often.
@fireAKems If you have lights on you can go through red lights as long as you slow down first. Wow, people usually know that by the time they're ten...
I think the age of a tructure doesn't play such a big role - I'm not saying that it doesn't have an affect, bug e.g. the city where I live in, is 2000 (yes 200, not just 200!) years old and still has almost the complete building structure like in Ancient Rome, and none of the buildings got lost when there was a fire
That guy would never be allowed to drive anything ever again at my department and lay off the Damn air horn! And no stopping at red lights? How stupid can a person be!
actually you can still be wearing a seat belt and get dressed in the cab. It's called a comfort lock. you just loosen up the belt and lock it in and you have ample room to don your turnouts.
Thought I would update some of my moments I made the first time. I see a lot of people saying FDs can run red lights. You folks believing this can just keep on blowing through the lights. When you strike a vehicle and kill someone, be sure to tell the people in the jury box that you have the right!. We all must share the road.You can't assume just because you have your lights on and siren sounding, that everyone can see and hear you. Respond with due regard for public safety.
maltroger you are a jackass!! You’ve never been in this situation so you wouldn’t know!! These guys did a excellent job and nobody is complaining like a little bitch except for you!
@fcfdladder22 You obviously need to read before you type. The patient was BLS. Medics had it handled. Nothing needed from the Fire Department besides possibly containing leaking fluid which they were looking for. Stop running off at the mouth and pay attention.
All of you guys drive like that? RED traffic lights mean stop or at least slow to a crawl before going thru the intersection. I assume the guy carrying his gear got dressed during the response which means he wasn't wearing a seat belt. Come on guys...alot of risk for a minor injury accident.
Wow does your dept ever need to learn how to drive. Besides the fact they don't know how to lay off the horns (completely unnecessary use of it), when approaching red lights think about slowing down. Part way through the response video you can see a car almost came through the intersection while the rig was blowing through a red light. Remember you can't help someone if you don't arrive yourself! Be safe and smart not dumb and fast!
@paolom3 not exactly, in the state of PA, fire trucks are not allowed to run through red lights, unless traffic stops as they approach

agree with you 911caddy a working relationship with not just the paramedics but with the police as well makes life so much easier,
@fcfdladder22 they werent just staring. they were looking for fluid leaks so they can put sand down to absorb it. didnt you notice the bucket?

@paolom3
my town we have "opticoms" so there are only 1 or 2 places to go through with a red light....more stop signs then anything

@paolom3
normally true,but in some states(i believe only one),POV's are not allowed to go through red lights,and must wait for it to change.
@paolom3 We are aloud to go through them, after we come to a complete stop at "Red Lights and proceed with caution".

The impala that's next to the ambulance.... I believe a see a teardrop light on the roof, Driver's side... Is this a volunteer firefighter?
Why did they wear full turnout gear to an MVA minor fluid cleanup?

Wow look at the fire. No wonder they sent the firies in!!! What a waste of resources. Should have just sent in the ambos only.

Yes we are. But also with common sense and due reguard for public safety.
true heroes, they will drive over or kill anyone in their way. to get to an accident scene, go get em boys.
Wauw.. Thank god I'm not on board that truck.. I would sh*t myself with a driver like that..

It's a good thing most fire companies don't drive according to your "common sense."
