I really appreciate the line about people high fiving and freaking out over seeing the northern lights.
My first time seeing them was at a bar in Homer, AK. A band was playing, and somebody runs in from outside of the bar and yells, "HEY EVERYBODY THE LIGHTS ARE OUT!!!" and it was like lifting a needle up off a record. The entire bar cleared out, the band stopped playing, and everybody sat in the parking lot on the hoods of their cars just enjoying the greens, pinks, and purple ribbons dancing across the sky. Plenty of people whistled, hooted, hollered, and just all around had an excellent time.
Once the aurora died down, everybody shuffled back inside the bar, the band started playing again, and it was business as usual.
Truly a magical experience.

Its so strange how much this band's unique sound has come to define my adolescence. From rocking out to Joanie under a bridge drinking cheap cider out of the bottle at age 15 to playing Camoflage whilst decorating my front room with my fiance at age 21

I feel like I'm being followed. I found TFB years ago when they played at Quinnipiac University. Maps and Flashlight were the soundtrack of my early college years. I grew up in RI and was stoked to have a song named after our tiny state. Now I live in Fairbanks, and feel very flattered that one of my favorite bands keeps making music for me.

That being said. It's winter for 5 months in Alaska. You have maybe 2 months of good sunny days. And it's quite common to go all summer with no sun.

@@isaacfenigsohn3839 Yeah, by way of the Concert Board and the student radio station KSUA. You'd be surprised, some of those concerts are funded in part by the student life fee, so if you want to get involved there are ways you can have some input. I started volunteering at the radio station my first semester...uh, over 10 years ago, and still go back to DJ from time to time. This year is weird with covid shutdowns, but it's a fun way to get involved.

Inspired by other comments here to share my Northern Lights story. I was a camp counselor in Northern Minnesota. One night, a counselor ran into our lodge where we would hang out after the kids had gone to bed to let us know that the Northern Lights were out. Everyone ran out and stared at the sky in wonder, high-fiving and freaking out.
After a short deliberation, we decided to wake up all the kids in their cabins to go outside and look at the lights. We decided that for some of them it may be their only chance to see something so beautiful, and didn't want to deprive them of the experience. They were confused and groggy when we dragged them out of bed, but as soon as they saw the sky, their faces lit up from the magic. Some of them cried. Some of us cried.
It was one of the best memories of my life.
