    always been true and never fails to impress. the best way to improve comfort and handling performance on any vehicle is tires, suspension, and brakes. glad you got your ride tuned to your preferences, you sound super pleased.

      +Joe Strother I am really pleased. It's not quite there but with new tyres I'm hopeful it will be sorted.

    What you've done is what I call zero-setting. That is getting a nice baseline setting for you where the bike reacts in a predicable manner with good wheel control. This is easy & just requires a little patience and a systematic approach. For most riders, riding on the road with a more-or-less factory spec production bike you're sorted. However, when you want to go further than that & fine tune things for a particular feel or response it quickly descends into a black art.

      +G. Bell There's definitely a lot more can be done than we did but the difference was vast even from our twiddling. Well worth it.

      +CalmBiker You got the bike to a sensible state with you on the bike. That you is important as you eluded to with The Imfamous Biker comment.
      Oh I think those noises are known as biker jizz.

    Definitely something I've been considering, a personal set up check on the FJR. I've always thought it was a bit soft on the rear since getting it. Certainly makes a difference with cornering...into and out of.

      +Hepcat Harley It's definitely worth it. Might be worth asking if anyone in your group does it.

    pretty much all bikes from japan are set that way new. unless the dealer adjusted it. the reason is in the owners manual. pretty much all bike from japan are setup for a 150lb rider, its in the manuals. so don't be worried when you buy a new bike. chances are good that no one at the dealer has any clue about bike setup so don't ask.. if you want to know about bike setup search for "dave moss tuning" here on youtube...

      The biggest problem was that it wasn't possible to stiffen it up nearly enough. I weight a bit more than 150lb (but not that much). I ended up switching bike in the end to the naked Z1000, which went completely the other way. Really overly stiff suspension but at least I could soften it a bit.

    Just bought a 2016 z1000sx it all feels wrong when riding, cornering and even slow speed. I was thinking it would need the suspension tweaking. Do you remember what settings you changed it too, I wouldn't mind tweaking it myself to see if things improve

    • @CalmBiker
      @CalmBiker  5 років тому

      I could probably find them written down somewhere but unless we are the same size it probably won't help. I think the newer bike had different suspension too.
      I need to make a video or three on suspension set up but haven't as yet. However, there are a few around for setting up sag, rebound, etc.
      I take mine to a local garage nowadays to a chap who knows the wizardry of suspension set up. It's definitely worth the few quid.

    go on the z1000sx forum,its all on there,mine was completely opposite,way to firm i reduced all my settings much softer

      +notAngryandy Weird. I guess it depends on which springs are the cheapest when they make the bikes.

    Another great vid, Mr Calm. I have an SX on my shopping list to change my CBR600F later this year, so I'll bear all this in mind. Thanks for the insights.
    By the way, does the screen on the SX in the most upright position keep most of the wind off you?

    • @CalmBiker
      @CalmBiker  8 років тому

      +David Thomas It does a remarkable job. Too good really. It's very easy to forget how fast you are going with the screen fully up.

    Very interesting Buddy, It makes me wonder if it's the same on the cruiser as it is on your bike as I've had the same feeling as having a puncture front and rear, mines a monoshock back end but not sure how the front are to be adjusted if at all, you'll have to keep us updated richard if it's improved with a pillion on, RSM8.

    • @CalmBiker
      @CalmBiker  8 років тому

      It is improved with pillion too but obviously still handles worse than without. Getting new tyres tomorrow too so hoping that improves it further. I guess a cruiser will still be largely affected by changes but not sure what level of control you will have. There was one adventure-ish bike with us that had preload on the rear and no other adjustment.

    On my MT-09 it comes out the factory like a pogo stick. With some adjustments it almost becomes rideable lol.

    Ive always thought a big old bus like my Suzuki wouldn't improve much with suspension fiddling and to be honest if I could afford it I would have had a change this year I really like the GSXR 750 , but that's not likely as I've bought a new VW and as I'm such a plodder I've left well alone ,so know you have got me thinking ? Wouldn't a Sports bike be more to your taste with your sporty riding style ? I know a few chaps who have swapped Z1000 ,s for ZX range etc.

      +Graham Calvert I've got a dodgy knee so the tucked position of sports bikes doesn't really work well for me. I end up not being able to put my left leg down. I really like naked bikes like my Z750R for fun and the Z1000SX is (hopefully) for touring with Mrs C. I was very tempted to buy a Z1000 naked but it seems a bit wrong to have two bikes that are essentially the same bar the plastics!

      +CalmBiker I'm on the best bike for me but I would love a GSXR but have similar problems I won't part with my GSX but am a little bored with it if I could afford a second bike however small it would make a nice change and a change is as good as a rest they say ?

  • @WEGGYZZR
    @WEGGYZZR 8 років тому

    Make or break ...suspension settings ....second hand bikes ....I nearly always Reset back to factory and go from there...can take a day or two wrenching,adjusting ride testing.....fine tuning....get it right for you and it can turn a bike around in the overall feel handling wise....then you have already other routes that can be taken if wanting to go more progressive as you probably know but for most ...if everything ifs working as it should and the oil is good then for most this will be enough.....you'll have to try mine one day......you will hate it..lol

    I've been fascinated by this subject of sag for some time now. You have given me the incentive to look into it further.

      +Nigel Roberts Sometimes you've got to let them know you love them ;-)
      Definitely worth doing. Even the people who were happy with their suspension went away more happy.
