Great video about a great engine and some good comments also. The 097 was a go to favorite in the early 60's. It was developed in '57 for the 270 hp 283. 327 one of the best engines ever built? In your opinion it might be the cubic inch put out by Chevrolet but the blocks are cast from the same molds as the 265 most 305’s and 350’s all the way up to the 400 with its massive 4-1/4 bore....they were all based off of the exact same block but the bore’s and stroke are different. Not trying to be a dick just sayin Chevrolet had a damn good block set up and served them extremely well.
@@chrismedders7739 that's not true from 55-67 they had a smaller crankshaft journal. The 302, 305, 307, 327, 350 from 1968-2003 had a larger crankshaft journal. And the 400 had an even bigger crankshaft journal. Hence why you have small, medium and large journal blocks. The small Journals are considered to be the best blocks because they were cast with a higher nickel content. This made the iron more ductile and more resistant to rust. The small Journals cranks also had less rotational force from the smaller journals. Also had less bearing friction and better oil retention due to less surface area. To this day many people believe the small journals 327s are still best best sbc ever made
My introduction to this little orange Chevy engine was when I bought a 55 chevy wagon with a 265 around 66 or 67 while in high school. Swapped it for a 283 and put a Duntov 30-30 and a Carter afb 4 barrel in it. Good times on a student's budget!

The first engine I ever rebuilt was a 327. I used a Duntov 30/30 solid lifter cam, 11:1 pistons and "Camel Hump" heads with an Edelbrock C3B intake and Holley 750 carb, I put it in my '50 Chevy Sedan Delivery. I did all this when I was 16 years old back in 1971 and drove the car to high school. It was a fast blast to drive.
@M927 Maximus - It's been nearly 50 years ago since that build. Seems like I hear Duntov and 30/30 in the same conversation when I hear people talking about them. Mine was the 30/30 cam. Whatever it was, it ran great in that 327.
The Fram filter debate and the old style Chevrolet bolt through filter design brought you here. Best paper filter design ever. Gone by 1966. Duntov recommended a Holley manifold to cure lean #7 cylinder. I ran a Offy dual port Port 0 Sonic that was the setup with this grind. Pulled hard to 6,000rpm on double hump 327 mill with 600cfm Holley. Fenderwell headers in 64 ChevyII. 2800lb wheelie toy with 9 inch Hoosiers. M-20 to 4:11. Fun Fun Fun.

You know, Im a professional engine builder of almost 40 yrs. That is a nice job in a lot of respects. I say this because Ive went through a lot of old 327s as well as several Ive created out of 350 blocks. Plug that rear crankcase vent, you needed those late model valve covers to run pcv, way better. Plug the oil fill in front of intake, you dont need it either, or put on some old skool valve covers with no holes at all, run rear vent, front oil fill, because just as I am calling it out now, others will in the future-the valve covers are just not 1962. That thing sounds perfect, with that old wcfb Carter carb ,amazing. Oh and another thing, that fan is eating almost 30hp...

You have a bit of a problem with the facts of Chevrolet camshafts. In 1956 there was an "096" camshaft that had the lift and duration of the 1957 "097" camshaft and that grind was continued through the 1965 327 solid lifter camshaft design. Then the DZ302 special camshaft was used with more radical duration and lift and was called the 30-30. Your reference to the 327 "LT1" camshaft (A HYDRAULIC lifter camshaft that has NO GAP to set) and was rated @ 350 max horse) is totally off the wall and wrong. So, Shorty, you know part of the story but not all. (The original "097" design was not so radical, but enough to get the 265, 283, and 327 engines to breathe enough to give a nice increase in output.)
There never was a "375" horse 302 engine. Never. The 302 cubic inch DZ was factory rated @ 290 max horsepower, and the optional dual quads equipped 302 had the most radical camshaft of all, called by Joe Blow the 30-30 , and not given a factory rated h.p. (By the way, your camshaft (in it's original cardboard case) has a GM factory Part Number, so what is that Part Number? That would shed more light on the discussion.
Advance the timing wee bit till she cranks like yok yok vroom , sounds wee bit slow in time distributor needs turned we bit ur spark advance is sticking May be she should take gas much better
way too complex for me, that motor just has too much stuff on top, can you try to simplify it down some?...give me those days back when engines didn't have to have all that unnecessary crap on top of it just to run, im tellin ya. betcha you need $100,000.00 worth of Snap-On tools, an ASE degree, and the patience of Jobe just to work on it.
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.
So why did you waste your time and money on this engine?. What car would you even put it in?. A Volkswagen or Vega ?. It's not powerful enough for a Camaro or Vette.

The 1966 327 - 350 horse with "346" hydraulic cam/lifters was an early LT1.
No PVC in 62.
Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by
reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated
central gas station per city or county. Now they even want to slow down
all the gas pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From
2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as
exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox
oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no
investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even
created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.
why spend money on heads a cam but stick with those awful headers
So why did you waste your time and money on this engine?. What car would you even put it in?. A Volkswagen or Vega ?. It's not powerful enough for a Camaro or Vette.
somebody has never driven or rode in a 327 equipped car before....
I was expecting something more exiting and groovy. Very disappointing.
Ok.
Proves you don’t need a huge choppy idle to get performance… this is how I aim for my engines to sound. Smooth and easy.. by far my fav engine in a stand video haha like a chicken on a stick … engine in a stand idk just seemed to make sense. Good job though. Not a lot of compression in it though huh?
