- After almost 4 years Apple has finally updated the Apple TV 4K. This new version features an updated processor, the ability to calibrate your TV using your iPhone, and a redesigned Siri Remote (thank god!). It still looks the same on the outside, but we're dying to know if they've updated anything else in this shiny black box so let's tear it down!
For high-res photos, more details, and a breakdown of all the silicon we found inside, check out our written teardown:

Edit: at 1:02 we mention that the original Apple TV 4K was the first Apple TV to have a fan, but that's false! We forgot the original Apple TV from way back in 2009 also had a fan.
the original Apple TV was released in 2006
@@user-ue9pf2dk1w 2007 but it was announced in early January 2007 so close enough
Guys, the original Apple TV was demo’ed by Steve Jobs in late 2006, and it was called iTV. Jobs demo’ed it again and announced the final name (Apple TV), pricing and shipping on Jan 9, 2007, the day the iPhone was introduced.
In late 2010, Jobs introduced a newer smaller black Apple TV using the A4 from the iPhone.
When..!! I will seen the Ipad pro m1 and i mac m1 teardown.Wait for that time.
Original Apple TV came out in 2007
8/10 on a apple product ? WOW...
Huh? At least iPhones historically had pretty good repairability scores
so will a 9/10 surprise you
psst the Mac Pro got a 9/10
I mean all Apple repairs have been better than Samsung
IF its not important for shipple dominancy, they will let you repair it
@@tannisroot ya Samsung glues the screen and battery in
Looks like the casing could house a future Mac mini with Mx chip.
I mean, not like the A12 is a slouch to begin with either 😅
@@TechDove yeah I agree.
Probably not for a few years since the m1x will be much too large to fit, also it would be a complete waste to have an Apple TV with a desktop cpu
@@arete1776 Check the new leaks, they’re going to make it super thin
@@BSingh-on4qr yeah, thin, not small. It’s still useless to put a 10 core cpu in a device that has to play 4K. Even an m1 would be too much.
I think i've charged my Apple TV remote.... 5 times since I've owned it? So the battery has MAYBE 10 cycles on it in 3+ years? At that rate it will last like 30 years before needing a replacement battery. I guess what i'm saying is that I think this device will be non-functioning before it needs a new remote battery.
batterys also age over time, not only by cycles.
@@Andi11144 yes, but very lightly used ones like that last for years and years. My 10 year old iPod touch’s battery is still perfect.
@@Andi11144 lithium batteries do not age like other types of batteries do. As long as it has storage charge you can leave it and it will maintain that charge for years. What kills lithium batteries is leaving it connected to power all the time (ever notice those bloated iPad display units at Walmart or another stores, this is why), charge cycles also take a slight hit in life but it's nothing like other types of batteries. And how often the remote needs charged it's going to last for quite a while.
My iPod Nano 5 battery died in 6-7 years and is nearly impossible to replace.
totally agree! i don't see this as a problem on the remote
The most striking thing is that this could have been a Mac Nano if it was fitted with A14.
@@0021hej I’m curious what you mean by that. All of Apple’s custom silicon are ARM chips. The Developer Transition Kit was based off up the iPad chip this Apple TV is using.
@@0021hej Dude, every custom Apple SoC has been ARM-based. macOS would absolutely work on an A14, especially considering the developer transition kit used the A12Z which was in the last gen iPad Pro.
@@0021hej your comment gave me a headache.
@@0021hej UA-cam is for everyone but the comment section is not for someone who does not even know if his comment is correct or not. lol
@@0021hej yeah. you should tell that to yourself.
So happy to see another tear down video! Love these!
you make it look so easy to teardown. good job
If you charge your remote once every 3 months, you’ll only have to put about 4 charge cycles a year on it. I’ve had my glass Siri remote since April 2020 and I’ve only charged it twice, but this battery is extremely unlikely to wear out anytime soon. Even if you use the remote for 10 years, you’ll still probably not loose significant battery health
Yes, but Lithium Ion batteries have a shelf life in addition to a maximum number of charge cycles. So you should expect reduced life after 3 years or so. But, of course, given how little power a remote control consumes, it might be much longer than that before you actually notice a problem.
Still, I have to agree that using traditional cells (CR2032, AA or AAA) would be better. There's really no need for a device like that to be rechargeable, given how infrequently you need to change batteries in general. (The remote for my Dish Network receiver, which is RF, not infrared, typically lasts about two years before its batteries need to be changed).
@@Shamino0 The Siri Remote is also used to send Siri Commands, so it does use a little more battery in those conditions. And generally speaking ( I hope ) Apple choose the longer lasting and high Cycle
Thank you for saying this… the battery will not wear out… the old Apple TV had a tiny battery in comparison and it still works like new. The device will be useless long before the battery fails of old age.
Yeah, I’ve been using the Siri remote since the 4K launched in 2017 and 4 years later it still only has to be charged every few months.
That battery is gonna outlive my house.
definitely and in 10 years god knows what apple tv will transform into !!!!
I love the new Apple TV remote. It’s similar to my original silver one which still works on the same battery since I bought it years ago. The Siri Remote however… stopped working, wouldn’t charge. So I’m happy with the new remote, simplicity of a power button is so satisfying.
And thanks for showing where the storage is located.. great teardown iFixit!!
I have had the original Apple TV 4K since 2018. I tend to charge the remote 2-3 times a year. Maybe i charged it couple more last year with all the lockdowns. But even if it was charged every month. And assuming the same 500 cycles to 80% capacity that iPhone batteries are rated for. thats like 40 years. And one charge per week would be almost 10 years. And the battery will still last for many many more cycles.
I think you would see more remotes needing to be replaced due to leaky disposable batteries than due to dead rechargeable ones.
Very best teardown
Thanks for making this video. I had to clean my direction pad. Apparently some particles had gotten in there and made it so that the down direction didn’t work out very well. watching your video. I was at least able to take that apart and clean it.
Even the board of the remote looks beautiful and consistent with other products.
Repair is one thing, getting part to repair it is another. Should we start judging it by how easy to get the parts?
I've got loads of these logic boards lol
Cool. Nice and to the point. Taking mine apart to clean the fan. Seems to be running hot. I had the previous version. Looks exactly the same
You can calibrate your tv with older apple tv's too.
Came here to say this. They also mentioned the touch wheel operating like a classic iPod touch wheel which doesn’t seem to be true in its current implementation.
Calibration works on my previous generation Apple TV 4k, not sure about the 3rd gen HD.
3:32: I wouldn't say everyone will have to replace the battery at some point. I have my Siri Remote for 3,5 years and it still needs to be charged once or twice a year, while being used nearly everyday (in these times^^).
What year is your apple tv? 2017-8?
@@Josmersuero Late 2017. It's the Apple TV 4K. So the siri remote with the white bordered menu button.
yeah, honestly channels like these are always acting as if we need to change to a new battery every 2 years 💁♂️
@@kjeldkaj It depends on a lot of things including time and luck, one may not need to swap a battery in 5 years while others have a swelling remote after 2 years. Batteries are unreliable consumables and should be designed for easy replacement just in case.
I’m happy to see that the disassembly was easy and it scored 8 out of 10 on the reparability scale, but where do you buy the spare parts, including the remote battery?
Lets be real. If you need to change the battery on a apple tv remote then it’s time for a new remote… phones may need battery changes after a 2-3 years but you use those a lot more and charge them often multiple times a day. I charge my apple tv remote MAYBE once every 6 months.
If the battery ever degrades, it’s gana be well past it’s life cycle anyways. Pressing some buttons doesn’t use much battery. How often do you change your tv remote batteries? I think i changed mine over a year ago.
I assume those using the microphone run through the battery a lot faster
I've had the same experience with my Apple TV remote (the previous gen black one). I charge it about once a year... and we use our Apple TV every day.
I just got one of these for my mums birthday, it’s a brilliant device, very fast and smooth. Good to see it’s easy to repair. I expect the battery will last several years.
Great video. Thank you!
thank You!
Still working great and better than ever with stable updates.
All Apple products look really clean inside with that black and gold.
Perfect aim? You don't need aim at all on the remote since it's all bluetooth. You only need aim when pointing at the TV to adjust the volume or power it on/off. Also coin-cell battery? Only if is rechargeable, I don't want non-rechargeable batteries in a remote again.
The color calibration is a software feature and works on older versions of Apple TVs
Awesome design
This A12 Bionic is bigger than the one found in iPhone , so does this mean it is more powerful.
can you guys do a video on how or what allows a switch to dock? because i am trying to fix my switch
thanks!
The remote screws are PL2 0.9 mm, same as for Apple Watch bands.
Great info - thank you. How is the power button attached. The button mysteriously popped out and will not stay put. Would you share a picture of the button when removed? Is there any magic to reinstalling?
I waited so long for the remote teardown
Nice findings that show we can repair the Apple TV. (:
Oh and thank you for fighting for the right to repair.
The old Apple TV 4k can also calibrate the color profile using Face ID sensors.
So can most Apple TV’s it’s just the software update I can do it with a Apple TV HD
Between the slide-out design on the remote and the clickwheel, I’m getting real iPod mini vibes. Feels like I’m hallucinating, for Apple to go from something so slick to something that looks straight out of a 2005 WWDC...
I love how the title is such a high contrast compared with the narration until 1:54 😆
Oh the power of my iPhone XS Max !! Man this will be the powerhorse then
What size pentalobe bit does the remote take? Every kit I check skips from 0.8 (too small) to 1.2 (too large) and I can’t find a description in a teardown vid beyond simply “pentalobe bit.”
you guys are invincible
My daughter spilt juice on the remote and it became super sticky even trying to get as much IPA in between the buttons and the body to disolve the juice. Being afraid of taking apart the remote apart at first but after seeing this video of how it is actually put together. Ive managed to take it all apart, cleaned and reassembled without any damage physically to anything. I used (funny enough) a pad lock shim from Lockpickinglawyers covert companion set. It is extremely thin and had a tiny notch and i slipped it between the circular touch pad at 2oclock to avoid damaging the tab. It popped the button up and i used ifixit plastic triangulae shime to get the button off. With that button out, to remove the rest of thebuttons, i again used covert instrument medium sized lock pick and slipped it into the open slot and pressed the smaller buttons tabs, itll pop up enough for you to have a sharp tweezer or pick to take the button out safely without damaging anything. I did the same for the rest of the buttons, reassemebled and works perfectly fine after you turn the apple tv on and off once so the touch pad recalibrates.
I honestly thought it was much much worse.. They did not completely lock us out of the repair by much..
Dot not worry, battery will be serialized to the some chip in the remote, or it will be specialized component that you could not buy it outside of Apple care, that will replace the hole remote
They will lock you out of the remote if you replace the battery.
They will make the chip supplier only sell replacement chips to them.
can you do a video on how to clean the exhaust fans on the Lenovo legion y540 (2019) TIA
I doubt changing the battery will ever be a problem for many. I think I've charge that thing like twice since I bought it when it came out, and I use it daily.
They should have they should have made the battery and lightning port slide out with the bottom bit
They could have put the battery in a plastic caddy of some sort with its own battery terminals and the lightning connector could have been attached to that. But then the remote might need to be slightly thicker or the battery slightly thinner. Either way, good video, now people can make an informed purchasing decision.
How many RAM has the new Apple TV?
Considering that I only need to charge my remote maybe three or four times a year and it’s likely good for a few thousand cycles, I don’t think many people will have to replace the battery of the remote. I mean, even if you recharged it every week, it would still last over ten years.
Still lets say something happens and your battery is dead..will good luck replacing it. Apple could’ve easily made it more repairable but purposely didn’t so you’d rather buy a new one rather than replacing a battery.
Ten years? You are hilarious.
This video is irrelevant because by the time the battery needs replacing, you're gonna want the latest Apple gadget anyway.
@@mrpmj00 no. Moving away from Apple and microsoft. I’m going open source and buy from companies that let me change the batteries.
@@darksideblues135 lol u like wasting money
The remote came apart much easier than I expected it to
I wonder if someone could do hackintoshes of those now that there is Mac OS that supports those chips.
Doesn’t really bother me about the Apple TV remote battery I have yet to have to replace the battery in one
The TV calibration isn't a feature of the new Apple TV it works on the last gen 4K as well.
last gen HD as well
The only purpose of the new 4K is to watch 4K HDR content at 60fps
@@kingcoong
Also Thread, HDMI 2.1 and WiFi 6
@@WellFedProductions Those as well
Can I reset it by jumping some cables or another method? Thanks.
Background music is a bit too loud although to his credit the voiceover guy has a very nice and clear style.
Do you eventually put the stuff that you tear down back together or just keep it as is?
The 1st gen Apple TV had a fan
Omg you're right! It's been so long we had forgotten. We'll make a note of that in our pinned comment.
TV calibration is software, it works on older Apple TVs too.
I just bought a AppleTV 4k 2nd gen 32gb and the remote direction buttons LEFT , RIGHT and UP don't work. Down still clicks fine. The remote was kinda dirty so I am thinking they spilled soda or something on it. I can't get that direction pad off. I can't find my screen tool for prying it out. Been trying to use hard plastic and thin items but nothing will pop it out. Suggestions on what to buy?
hey ifixit, whats the credit of the used music ? would like to hear more
Are the IR sensors in the same location as the previous model?
Where dat mini led ipad teardown at bro
Seems pretty easy to replace the battery though. Less than 15 mins of work. Not ideal but so much better than the last one
How is repairability 8 out of 10 ? Do you mean the disassembly process is 8 out of 10 ?
What chip on that board can you buy and repair if it gets toasted ?
User replaceable batteries FTW!
1:20 iPhone XR, 3rd gen iPad Air, 5th gen iPad mini and the 8th gen iPad too
(edit: corrected the time stamp)
Are you going to do a teardown of the new A15 Apple TV?
Waiting for this
Apples logic boards keep getting sexier
What is the size of the driver you used to disassemble the Siri remote?
Do we know the ram?
Why didn’t you show the CNC housing , it’s the most interesting part of it. No other remote is like it.
Is it possible to talk more specific about the components? Such as the HDMI 2.1 - is there something special about that? Will it could handle 8K later or?
I don’t know much about it, so therefore I would like to know why and what’s should be so special about hdmi 2.1 port - when they (at the moment) only supports 4khdr60hz and not 120hz?
Thanks for the tear down video
Yes, HDMI 2.0 only supports 4K60, 2.1 supports up to 8K120 i think, though i'd suggest you check the HDMI specs list.
@@TheGokki i know… but Will Apple open support for 4k120hz - now when it’s a 2.1 hdmi?
so does this finaly support TrueHD atmos or should i stick with the shield?
Are You sure … with a little more prying…. REALLY should be with major prying effort from the gods 💪🏾
Didn’t the 1at Apple TV that was Mac based have a fan?
Should’ve included a tiny speaker for easy finding..
iFixit finding a way to make the title negative: *oh yeah, it’s all coming together*
0:26 hey! the apple tv doesn’t use ir with the siri remote, it uses rf.
yeah, surprised they missed that. It does use IR with third party remotes, but not the apple remote. I love RF no need to point, and can control in another room. It might be using bluetooth not sure.
WHATS THE REPAIRABILITY SCORE FOR REMOTE??
Got OCD at the end there
Ok but how many end users do you think actually replace rechargeable lithium ion batteries? If the little ones in AirPods can last for so long then I’m sure a remote you interact with just to get your show going will be fine…
We need to replace our Gen 2 TV’s, so the new one is a no brainer for us.
2:43 great so in 10 years or so it'll be an ipod nano like situation with the remote
What about the power bottom???
What is the point of lightning on the remote?
Why is it still existing? Like the iPod it can be easily replaced by an IPhone and IPad and an HDMI Adaptor.
Pretty sure the IR blaster on the remote is for TVs, Soundbars, etc, not the Apple TV itself. I believe the remote connects over Bluetooth. Also, the remote has a long battery life currently. If you put a coin cell battery in there, it would be plugged in all the time.
Apple’s website says with normal use you should only need to charge the remote “a few times per year” - if this is the case, why will “everyone” need to change the battery at some point?
Honestly, I don't think I'll need to replace the battery of the remote...
I have an Apple TV 4K since 3 years, and I only had to recharge the battery 5 times on a daily use.
This kind of reminds me of a second gen ipod nano, where you had to slide the guts out lol. The downside was that if the battery expanded, you were F*cked.
Oh hey. I've seen apple do this before on the iPod nanos.
What’s more important is: were you able to assemble it back without the touch wheel stop working?
Wish you showed the microphone
64 gigs is where, pleas point that out, could not see any memory in this, did I miss something
I like the design of Remote it's little iPad design like old school ipad but it's srink and small 😊😊
*iPod design
Notice how it uses a12, the oldest chip not susceptible to checkm8
Great vid but hoping for non rechargeable cell batteries? Cmon man..
I own a 3rd gen Apple TV with the old aluminum remote that had the *very* bad dpad and one thing I like about is the fact that it had a replaceable CR2032 battery. I think the reason they no longer do that is because the mic, internal sensors and extra functionality of the new remotes requires a lot more juice and a cr2032 would run out too fast. AND I don't think Apple would ever make a device with a rechargeable and replaceable battery. Remember: the AirTags aren't rechargeable nor was the 3rd gen remote
2:10 What is the blue plastic scrapper kind of tool which you used to remove the apple tv remote buttons ?
It doesn't matter, it's impossible to do it with that scraper. I don't know how he just "started popping out" the buttons.
This doesn't deserve an 8/10 for repairability.
And what repairability score did that remote get?
-2/10
@@ronanh13 that sounds too low, as it's not that hard to disassemble it, comparing to it's older version
They really need to make a Mac nano in this formfactor
