    Saw a rat the size of a small cat before in an alley. It was chilling smack in the middle of the path blocking my way. I stared at it....it stared at me....for a good 15 seconds. I could hear it thinking: "Come at me bro, I dare you." 😂

      Cats don't go after rats nowadays, thanks to the "do-gooders" who leave food around for strays. When the food is not finished by the straws, it draws birds and rats.

    I see all these issues as a matter of nature losing its balance. If you eliminate the natural predator which helps to keep in check the prey, the prey naturally will thrive. Our urbanization and overcrowding is causing a lot of natural predator to disappear which hence contribute to the imbalance issue. What our planner attempts to do is to play the part of the natural predator by engaging pest control companies but you can never replace the role played by the natural predator. You can never play the role of nature. This is something that our planner has not and will probably not think about when they devise their population policies and town design. They have an idealistic dream of squeezing as many people in a square metre of space as possible and stacking it up as high as possible or going as deep underground as possible. In the process they destroy the nature balance and pay the price, whether it is rats, or mosquito (dengue) or other pests and infectious diseases spread by pests problem.

    • @Rndi9157

      Yes....true...unbalance nature...Singapore needs more snake to hunt the rats

    • @kwoowoo828
      @kwoowoo828 5 років тому

      If you think nature is only a snake vs rats, cat vs rats game, you are clueless, just like textbook smart planner. You know not what nature is. If you know, you will not even mess with it.

Then the question would be how people can convinced to eat less and reduce food waste in our largely consumer society. Bearing in mind inflation, one way to reduce food waste is to moderate supply but that would be unthinkable in Singapore.

    In my estate this is what I witnessed. Rats exist because people feed cats. So the cats don't bother with the rats. The rats can run in front of the cats and the cats would do nothing. But they also don't do anything (cannot outrun the rats) because they are too fat. So the rats win/stay. But the next problem arises. Snakes. Where there're rats, there will be snakes. So beware. I've seen all 3 of them co-existing in my estate. I believe this is their relationships. And it doesn't help my estate is constantly surrounded by constructions. Not that construction sites keep snakes. But the forest clearing made the snakes migrate. They could possible live in the forest and come to the estate to feed. But now they live and feed here.

    DIAMOND TEETH
    not many know it, rat infestation is one of the hardest to control
    they can slowly scrape & make one small hole to burrow inside a super hard shell of a coconut (ultimately, enjoying eating the flesh away)
    i had seen this quite alot
    rat's front teeth were like diamonds, it's super dooper hard!

      The cats will prevent the rats from getting TOO comfortable.
      When the comfort level is high, rats will eat wel and reproduce efficiently. Of Course there’ll be a surge in numbers. moreover they get too daring and grow very large. as large as cats themselves. Afraid for children’s safety. they may dare to harm the kids.

    Lack of stray cats as some mention is not true cause ....stray cats in sg are too lazy to hunt for mice or rats as food...they prefer to laze around and be fed by cats lover around the island and getting fatter n unable to chase down a rat even if they want to..

    • @michellelim7746
      @michellelim7746 5 років тому

      yes perhaps that could be so also,
      but another possible reason is that lesser snakes now compared to last time.
      When the rats are TOO comfortable, they eat well and reproduce efficiently. This leads to high population.
      i see at least one in every car park every night/ evening!! one if i’m lucky. most of the time, 3 or more and they are as big as cats.
      i’m afraid for children’s safety. The lesser predators, the more daring the rats get. It’s a serious matter.

      @@Thenevisian If you are in the market obviously there are rats .
      Last time ( 6 months ago) I saw one rat near the sidewalk of a department store food area & it's huge feeding the leftover. Rather than that, I've never seen rats in the community buildings ,definitely can't hear them running in house piping system. I mean in Taipei. Probably because Taipei practices scheduled trash collection policies. They only collect trash in particular timing so you can't pile your trash outdoor & of course cat population is a huge reason as well.
      (Well probably also because I only shop in the supermarket , not in wet market & I don't eat in night markets or stalls so I rarely see rats ).

    The cute and intelligent rats have returned courageously to our homeland as they are fully aware of Singapore's growing economy and higher standard of living. So they have now set up permanent residence all over Singapore and have adapted smartly to our modern way of life. However, the shy but friendly rats have mistakenly thought that the government has encouraged them to increase their population size.
