  • Bass cover of Rush's "The Trees" from my favorite album of all time, Hemispheres, from 1978. This song is one of my favorite Rush songs, and has been since I first started getting into Rush, who I can say is probably my favorite band of all time. This is a very interesting and melodic bass line, one that I admire quite a bit, and I used to play it all the time when I was younger, and over the past few days I've brushed up the details and put together my version here, which mostly follows the original line. The original bass line was played by none other than Geddy Lee, who is definitely one of my biggest influences and a favorite bass player. The middle section of this song leading up to the part before the solo, and the solo itself and following parts add up to be one of my favorite musical moments of all time. Awesome stuff.
I'm playing a Fender 60th Anniversary P bass with Rotosound Swing Bass 66 strings through a Genz Benz Contour 500 amp. I've got the gain pretty high and my settings as usual with tone and volume maxed. The tuning is in E standard, but I had to make sure my bass was tuned right on at E standard, instead of my go-to of a few cents flat. For the intro, I'm using a Boss Chorus CEB-3 chorus pedal, which is the same one I used for my Tempus Fugit cover; it's a really cool pedal.
Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoy! I've been in a big prog mood lately, so I hope everyone's enjoying the past few videos. Feel free to leave any feedback, suggestions, criticism, questions, requests, or anything in the comment section below!

Thanks so much! That pedal really does own it when it needs to. It's fun to implement it. Glad you enjoyed, I put a good bit of work into learning this song.

Awesome, Ian! I'm a die-hard RUSH fan and just started playing a few months ago at 50! You and Troy are an inspiration and play a lot of the music I enjoy most.

Thanks! That is very, very kind of you to say and I'm really honored you'd think so. Troy was definitely a big inspiration to me in learning a lot of these songs as well as doing videos, so I see where you're coming from, and I'm happy I'm able to be of any help or inspiration! That's awesome that you've started playing yourself, and I wish you the best on it!

Yay!! A Rush cover! It sounds really great! I also like the mix between bass and the song in this cover, you can definitely hear the part you're playing really well but it didn't over power the rest of the music.

Thanks!! I'm happy you enjoyed! I'm glad you like the mix here, as I tried to really get a nice balance, and have been working on that in my past videos up to this one. More Rush covers coming in the future for sure!

Sweet!! If you're going to do more Rush covers would you ever consider doing Cygnus X-1 Book 2: Hemispheres from the same album? That would be the awesomest ever, and I'm sure you'd kill it!

Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm really happy to hear you like the tone, too. This bass can bring on the growl when it wants to, and I love playing it. Many more covers coming in the future!

The ones I put up as little easter eggs in my videos are ones I already own, but the collection grows over time! And thanks a bunch for watching, and I'm glad you enjoyed.
