- Bass cover of one of my all-time favorite songs, "Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel" by Kansas, from their 1975 Masque album. This song is one of my favorite songs to play, and it was one of my first experiences with learning an entire bass line all by ear on my own. The original bass line was played by Dave Hope, who is a massive inspiration to my playing and my bass tone. He played with a pick, but I have more fun playing Kansas songs with my fingers, as I've done here. There's improvisations all over the place here, but I've followed the original line pretty closely.
I'm using my trusty Fender 60th Anniversary Precision bass with Rotosound Swing Bass 66 stainless steel strings through a Genz Benz Contour 500 amp. The tuning is in E standard, and I've got the gain cranked a bit to get that angry bite that I love so much.
This song was actually requested by one of my subscribers, KingWTFuck, who has been kind enough to leave some comments in some of my videos over time. He suggested this song on my Child of Innocence cover, and it was some nice inspiration to pick this song back up and let 'er rip. As always, if anyone would like to place a request, feel free, and if you'd have any suggestions, criticism, feedback, questions, or anything of the like, place them all in the comment section below.
Thanks for watching! Hope you enjoy!
Nice work, been a Kansas fan since their first album. Glad to see a younger generation grooving on some great music. Keep it up!
Dave Hope, one of the most underrated bass players of his time.
First, great selection you can’t go wrong with great material. Great tone good job brother! You make all us old geezers happy that although we lived through the times when this music was made you’re keeping it alive!
Really enjoyed watching this. Great video! great sound you have. Much appreciated,
Thanks!! I'm glad you enjoyed.

Thanks for suggesting this one! I'm happy you enjoyed it. Thanks for all the kind words and the share.
I think its awesome, you cover a lot of songs i've been listening to since I was a child. Plus bass players rule.
That's pretty cool to hear, I'm glad you enjoy them like that; I have definitely become a huge fan of these older styles of music, and learning their bass lines is a blast. And heck yeah, I tend to agree, and I hope I do the art of bass playing justice even in my young age.
Damn man, excellent! So, Troy sent me this way because of your Crisis cover {which was really cool}
Great job, the tone is huge and your right hand attack is really impressive
That's pretty cool; thanks for checking out the channel! I'm glad you enjoyed this and the Crisis cover, thanks for the positive feedback!
insane tone yo
Excellent
Well! That was fun!!!
Nice!! I'm not familiar with the song, but Kansas is a great band, and this was a really great cover, I like it a lot!
Thanks a bunch!! This song is one of my favs, and I'm really glad you enjoyed the cover!
Is that you Dave Hope? Dayum Son, That was an amazing cover. I really feel you were raised right. Great job as always. Time for some fret work on that USA yet? your putting in sooo much play time..
Thanks a ton!! I'm really happy to hear you say that. And you know, I wonder how long this bass can go until I play the frets all the way to oblivion. Seeing it without the strings the other day was kind of cool to show how much the frets have been worn down since first getting it. I'm sure that'd be a fun project, and that you'd get more luthier experience under your belt as well as doing a great job. Either way, this bass is the greatest instrument I've played, and I doubt much can rival it.
Very well done, congratulations!
Jako dobro!!
that's amazing ! can you please send me the bass tabs?
Great job!!! Never use picks!
Better saying I prefer fingers than picks
What's the effect you are using?
