You are overthinking these plants waaaay too much. These are bar none the single easiest plant to have hands down no effort whatsoever to have a beautiful plant just put em in the dirt and water it when you remember to. done! soon you’ll have a wonderfully gorgeous specimen of your own.

      Hey Greg,
It's the story of my life. I tend to overthink everything. I try to anticipate problems before they arise. I am a firm believer in that old adage: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." and the adage: "Best to do it good the first time, so you don't have to do it again." etc...
I am in the process of rethinking my approach to life. I'm not doing a "philosophical overhaul," but I am planning to make changes to make life easier/simpler.
I'm removing the gravel layer on the bottom of my pots due to my new knowledge of the "perched water table."
I'm going to decrease my additives to the potting mix with only sand and perlite -v- vermiculite - removing the orchid bark and volcanic cinder to keep costs down.
I need to make my life simpler - remember that with all my planning, that life will takes it's own course, people will make their own choices, teens will make their own mistakes, and sometimes you just have to let mistakes happen and hope for the best.
Thank you for visiting and taking the time to comment

Plants, gardening, and sitting in the garden to reflect helps me get through... challenges of work, kids, and life :) Then I eventually have plants to share and give to others so they can find a little peace and happiness in their busy day.

Plant related question: my spider plant tips are dry and browning :( no idea why. I'm in the UK and the weather is pretty cold atm. Could this be related?

    • @PlantsaremyTherapy
      @PlantsaremyTherapy  4 роки тому

      Good Morning, Sherristar
OMGosh, the UK as in England. As a child I dreamed of visiting your country (palaces, monarchs, bridge, Mary Poppins, etc... )
Spiderplant: I would think colder/frozen climates have dryer air, I would also think that spider plants, being tropical plants, won't do well in temperatures less than 60*F, so keep it away from cold drafts and possibly mist the plant with a spray bottle. Does this plant have the same problem in the spring an summer months?

I had not known about the Hawaiian spider plant variety. I have had green and variegated spider since the 70's and I just have always loved them. This week I came across the Hawaiian variety at our garden shop and one lives at my house now! It wasn't labeled as such but I recognized it from your videos...can't wait to see how lovely it becomes! Thanx!

I didn't know that there was a difference too. I saw it first on UA-cam, then at my local Home Depot. Then I thought I should buy it because I live in Hawaii, so this plant must do well here. I'm not sure if it is it's own cultivar, or it's a result of growing in Hawaii. I like the plant, but I only recently realized that I only have one variegated plant left because friends who wanted spider plants took all my other propagations.

@@PlantsaremyTherapy..My first plants long ago, were very long strappy leaves solid green. My favorite one now I have been growing has a very long strappy leaf, green on the leaf edges and a white stripe down the center. There is also one that is opposite- white at the edges with green stripe down the center. I like the "Hawaiian" because it seems more compact with shorter, wider leaves. I love them all! I like the way you put then in taller vases to show them off.

      Good morning, Jean-Marie,
My beautiful spider plant looks horrible now... relatively speaking. The small Sumatran cherry tree lost it's leaves, which is does every winter (even though Hawaii really doesn't have a winter), and too much sun got to the plant, so now I relocated it under the Tahitian Gardenia Tree. and it still looks - well not as good as it did, but the variegated spider plant, that I took outside to get a great from my cat, is doing great!
Spider plants are great plants, they grow well, easy car, makes the house look fresh, purifies the air, and eventually will recover... I think you will enjoy your new spider plant:)

      Hello, N Singh
Aloha from Hawaii. I hope you are having a good morning. Thank you - I like sharing my experiences for the benefit of others. Propagating slider plants is easy, which makes it fun, but it also builds confidence to propagate other plants. I suggest your next plant be a philodendron - the Silver Satin Pothos is also very easy to propagate, and the plant looks very exotic.

I had many cats, and none played or even looked at my houseplants, but I found a newly weaned kitten on my patio, and now that he's older, he's been attacking my A Plants, knocked over my snake plant, sat in the middle of my peace lily, and totally destroyed my spider plant....
I am slowly transferring my garden outside, and my figurines and crystals... well i learned to depart with the broken pieces.

Aloha from Hawaii! I hope you are having a good morning. My affection for the Hawaiian version spider plant fluctuates. The leaves are thicker and tender, so breaks and bends are common, and although I accept that nature isn't perfect, i wish it looked a lot less damaged. I have to repot my spider plant in the blue owl pot. I'm sad, but I enjoyed it for a few years now, so it's time.

Mahalo nui loa for the tips on propagating spider plants! Been having problems with my plant in the past but thankfully it is thriving. It’s producing babies again. Btw, been enjoying your videos and thank you for being a very compassionate person. We need a lot of people like you.

    • @PlantsaremyTherapy

I don't understand how one spider plant can be thriving while the other not as much when they are from the same plant and in similar light and watering.... I am happy that these plants are very forgiving. I was just sitting in my courtyard yesterday before the grandkids woke, and noticed how nice this plant continues to look, but then I dread the day I need to repot it. Sometimes plants don't like to be repotted.
I noticed that the plant needs to be "pot bound" before it sends out babies.

Aloha from Hawaii! I hope you are having a good day.
These past few months have been a challenge, but I'm hoping to restart filming again.
Many of my plants are struggling. This beautiful Hawaiian cultivar spider plant is also struggling. It seems it's not as sturdy as the original version.
I hope to get around to repotting this pot soon. I was thinking Australian Grass, but it's $100.00.
Take care. I hope you have a good weekend

      Hello, Val
These plant do well, and sometimes they don't. I killed many, but bassically, the less I fuss with them, the better they do. I recognize when they need to be watered. They appear "dull" in shine before they wilt, and I just water it.
Don't be too hard on yourself. Learning plants takes time.

😊Yes! 🌿 I've always before propagated directly in soil, but the spiderlings struggle and sometimes don't root at all, but propagating in water, the plants seem to thrive. Keep them in indirect light while in water, and keep them in bright indirect light for the first several days after being placed in soil. 🤓
Spider plants can handle some direct light, but they thrive in high indirect light. 😊
I'm glad you were able to get a few ideas from my trails & errors. 😁

    Hey there my friend
Just going through some older videos and stopped at the spider plant! Actually love this plant. I used to have several at work in The therapy room!
    My patients loved them!
    Now
I have a curly one but I noticed that the growth rate is slower. However, loved the various arrangements and since I have a south facing window After purchase of mother in law plant I will start looking for a spider plant!
I am working towards replanting my dumb cane, peace Lilly and sadly had to say goodbye to my dumb cane. I tried the alcohol and then Neem oil!
I am like you and can’t spend a lot of time taking care of an infected plant😢. Sooo nothing is in the huge pot where it was after about 10 years old I guess.
Any way my friend Enjoy your channel as Always! And look forward to sharing advice on best plants to bring home! My peace Lilly needs to be propagated as well!

Good morning! Happy 4th of July... I suppose the US Independence Day may not be a global celebration, but July 4th is, so happy July 4th... which in Ireland may just be another day, and it's pretty much the same for me except the military bases are prepped to show off, and I was surprised how much air power the U.S. has.
Hawaii is the U.S. central command for the U.S. Pacific Fleet, and they were practice flying military helicopters and fighter jets yesterday... I've always known the U.S. was a military force, but I didn't really notice how much of a force... I always see the Military ships in Pearl Harbor, but that's a daily thing, so that fades into the background, but the fighter jets, bombers, and helicopters are impressive. I'm not sure if this military display has to do with President Trump, but if it is... it's very impressive. A few years ago, North Korea bragged about having the missile capability to send a missile to Hawaii... I doubt it. North Korea is almost 3 thousand miles away, the earth is constantly rotating, the air densities at different temperatures at different levels of the atmosphere is variable, and the Hawaii Archipelago is a tiny target. North Korea would have a better chance hitting the Aleutian Islands off Alaska... or hit Japan, that would force a U.S. response, but I doubt they are that stupid. The U.S. would love to occupy the Korean peninsula to threaten Russia.
I'm not a "war monger," I just like playing chess and have a very active imagination.
      Anyways...
Hope you have a great 4th of July
      Gerald:)

My condolences. I have been going through my garden and houseplants that I have neglected these past several months. Man of my pothos are struggling, and I've always thought these were indestructible plants. If you aver get a new plant, I suggest Chinese Evergreens, they've lived through the neglect with minimal harm.

Aloha from Hawaii. I hope you are having a good morning. Thank you - I like sharing my experiences for the benefit of others. Propagating slider plants is easy, which makes it fun, but it also builds confidence to propagate other plants. I suggest your next plant be a philodendron - the Silver Satin Pothos is also very easy to propagate, and the plant looks very exotic - and talk about a gorgeous plant!
Wishing you happiness and good health always,

    Hello, my friend :)
If I were in Ireland, I think I'd consider growing peach, plum, or pears... I love those fruits, but I live in the tropics, so I grow mango, citrus, and loquat trees. Also, Hawaii land is finite and very expensive, so I have a modest size lot.
My knowledge is limited... Make sure your plants will fruit in your area/climate/etc...,
Don't plant the tree in a round hole,
Make the hole bigger, and mix potting soil, Perlite, with yard/garden/present soil
Make the whole square so the whole doesn't "ball up."
I bought a mushroom start/growing kit, and I mixed it up and placed it in the square tree hole before placing the tree in the hole. Fungus have a symbiotic relationship with trees.
Plant the trees in spring to early summer - before its stressed by winter.
Some trees are fussy - do not pile mulch near the trunk.
If in a dry area, make a well, so you can control the water during waterings.
These are the tips I use.
    Take care my friend,
    Gerald :)

You have beautiful spider plants. Everyone says that they are easy to take care of but I find it not so. I have lost several pots of curly spider plants and the current one is struggling to survive in water. And I too have lost many baby spider plants when I propagate them in water.

      Hello, K C
I agree with you. These plants can be fussy. I had to find a good spot for it, and now it's doing well. It likes bright indirect light, regular watering, and doesn't like the breeze.
Spider plants have moved down my favorite plant list. I'm into Chinese evergreens now days. I like the pink ones. They are easy to care for.

Exscelent. Vedeo pl share in detail soil mix ? And tell what type and when fertiliser to be use? Thanks

    • @PlantsaremyTherapy
      @PlantsaremyTherapy  5 років тому

I rarely fertilize. I fertilize the soil with Alaskan Fish Fertilizer at least once a year, but maybe up to three times a year. I fertilize the plant sparsely once or twice a year. I sometimes "feel" like the plants aren't happy, and then I start trying things.
Be very careful of chemical fertilizers, which are types of salt, and too much salt can shut down water take-up in roots.
      I'm not a scientist.
The soil I usually use is:
2 parts potting mix to 1 part Perlite (basic)
... with 1 part sand and 1/2 part orchid bark.
the main thing is to keep the soil well-draining.

Can I stick a broken or cut leaf into the soil?

    • @PlantsaremyTherapy
      @PlantsaremyTherapy  5 років тому +1

      Hello, Frost Flower,
I don't think spider plants can be propagated by leaf... i guess it may be possible, but I never heard of anyone successfully doing so. I suggest waiting for the mother plant to become root bound, once that happens, it will start sending out spiderlings. Spiderling root quickly and you'll have a new plant.
Remember, they like bright indirect light and water only when dry.
      Friends,
      Gerald:)

You know... I've always liked the 'Song of India' plant. I propagated a lot of them, but somehow I don't have many. I think I got comfortable with having a lot of them, that when people asked, I just gave them away. I need to propagate more of these plants... i.e. "Ribbon Plants". I heard that another name of the 'Song of India' is "Ribbon Plant," but then no one knows what I'm taking about :)
